In this episode of the Compendium, we explore the Jason Corbett case. The harrowing tale of love, betrayal, and tragedy. Jason was an Irish widower, sought a fresh start in North Carolina with his children and new wife, Molly Martens. Their seemingly idyllic life unraveled in 2015 when Jason was found bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat and a concrete brick. Molly and her father, ex-FBI agent Tom Martens, claimed self-defense but were later convicted of second-degree murder. After appeals, their convictions were overturned, leading to a plea deal for voluntary manslaughter and their release in 2024. We delve into the complexities of this domestic violence case, the contentious custody battle over Jason's children, and the emotional aftermath that continues to haunt his family.   We give you just the Compendium, but if you want more, here are our resources: A Deadly American Marriage (2025) – by Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell Killing of Jason Corbett – Wikipedia   Host & Show Info Hosts: Kyle Risi & Adam Cox About: Kyle and Adam are more than just your hosts, they're your close friends sharing intriguing stories from tales from the darker corners of true crime, the annals of your forgotten history books, and the who's who of incredible people. Molly Martens Corbett, Tom Martens le fanacht i bpríosún. The prison service in North Carolina in the United States has admitted that a mistake was made when calculating how long Molly Martens Corbett and her father Tom Martens were to spend in prison. Tá sé admhaithe ag an tseirbhís phríosúin in North Carolina sna Stáit Aontaithe go ndearnadh dearmad nuair a bhíothas ag ríomh cén fad a bhí le caitheamh i bpríosún ag Molly Martens Corbett agus ag a hathair Tom Martens. It was revealed yesterday that the two were to be released this week but it was later announced that they would be kept in prison until next June. Tugadh le fios inné go raibh an bheirt le scaoileadh saor an tseachtain seo ach fógraíodh ina dhiaidh sin go gcoinneofaí i bpríosún iad go dtí mí an Mheithimh seo chugainn. Molly Martens Corbett and Tom Martens were convicted in the murder of Jason Corbett, a 39-year-old man from Limerick who was beaten and killed in his home in North Carolina eight years ago. Ciontaíodh Molly Martens Corbett agus Tom Martens i ndúnorgain Jason Corbett, fear 39 bliain d'aois as Luimneach a bascadh agus a maraíodh ina theach in North Carolina ocht mbliana ó shin. Before it was confirmed last night that they were to be kept in prison, the family of Jason Corbett in Limerick indicated that the report about the release of the two had hurt them greatly and said that the authorities in North Carolina had wronged them. Sular deimhníodh aréir go raibh siad le coinneáil i bpríosún, thug teaghlach Jason Corbett i Luimneach le fios gur ghoill an tuairisc faoi shaoradh na beirte go mór orthu agus dúirt go raibh loicthe ag na húdaráis in North Carolina orthu. Molly Martens Corbett was married to Jason Corbett, a business manager whose body was found in the master bedroom of the couple's home in Wallburg, North Carolina in August 2015. Bhí Molly Martens Corbett pósta ar Jason Corbett, bainisteoir gnó a bhfuarthas a chorp sa phríomhsheomra codlata i dteach cónaithe na lánúine in Wallburg, North Carolina i mí Lúnasa 2015. Jason Corbett's two young children – Sarah and Jack – were in the house at the time. Bhí beirt pháistí óga Jason Corbett – Sarah agus Jack – sa teach ag an am. The children's mother died in 2006 and Jason Corbett married Molly Martens in Limerick in 2011 before the family moved to America. Cailleadh máthair na bpáistí in 2006 agus phós Jason Corbett Molly Martens i Luimneach in 2011 sular bhog an teaghlach go Meiriceá. In 2017, Molly Martens Corbett and Tom Martens were convicted of Jason Corbett's murder and sentenced to 20 years and 25 years in prison respectively. In 2017, ciontaíodh Molly Martens Corbett agus Tom Martens i ndúnmharú Jason Corbett agus gearradh príosún 20 bliain agus 25 bliain ar an dís faoi seach. That conviction was overturned in 2020 on the grounds, it was said, that important evidence was withheld from the jury at trial. Cuireadh an ciontú sin ar neamhní in 2020 ar an mbonn, a dúradh, gur coinníodh fianaise thábhachtach ón ngiúiré sa triail. Last October, however, they pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. I mí Dheireadh Fómhair seo caite, áfach, phléadáil siad ciontach i ndúnorgain thoilteanach. Príosún ar Molly agus Tom Martens as dúnorgain Jason Corbett. Molly Martens Corbett and her father Tom Martens have been given an additional prison term of between 7 and 23 months in relation to Jason Corbett's murder. Tá téarma breise príosúin de idir 7 mí agus 23 mí gearrtha ar Molly Martens Cortbett agus ar a hathair Tom Martens maidir le dúnorgain Jason Corbett. This term is in addition to the 44 months they have already spent in prison. Is sa bhreis ar an tréimhse 44 mí atá caite acu i bpríosún cheana féin atá an téarma seo. The Court in the State of Carolina ordered that Molly Martens Corbett undergo a psychiatric evaluation and that she be monitored in case she tries to take her own life. D'ordaigh an Chúirt i Stát Charolina go ndéanfaí measúnú síciatrach ar Molly Martens Corbett agus go gcoinneofaí súil uirthi ar eagla go ndéanfadh sí iarracht lámh a chur ina bás féin. Limerick native Jason Corbett's two children said Molly Martens Corbett abused them when they were children and molded them to tell lies as part of her plan to get them into her legal care and -she would escape from the crime she was accused of. Dúirt beirt pháistí Jason Corbett, arbh as Luimneach ó dhúchas dó, gur bhain Molly Martens Corbett mí-úsáid astu nuair a bhí siad ina bpáistí agus gur mhúnlaigh sí iad le bréaga a insint mar chuid dá plean go gcuirfí faoina cúram dlithiúil iad agus go n-éalódh sí ón gcoir a bhí curtha ina leith. Molly Martens Corbett was brought to tears several times when the children criticized her in court. Bhis na deora ar Molly Martens Corbett roinnt mhaith uaireanta nuair a cháin na páistí í sa chúirt. Jason Corbett died in August 2015 of a stroke at his home in North Carolina. Bhásaigh Jason Corbett i mí Lúnasa 2015 nuair a tugadh bascadh dó ina theach cónaí i gCarolina Thuaidh. Molly Martens Corbett and Tom Martens were given terms of 20 and 25 years respectively for Jason Corbett's murder. Gearradh téarmaí de 20 agus 25 bliain faoi seach ar Molly Martens Corbett agus Tom Martens as dúnmharú Jason Corbett. The pair never denied killing Jason Corbett but claimed they were acting in self-defense when they killed him. Níor shéan an bheirt ariamh gur mharaigh siad Jason Corbett ach mhaígh siad gur á gcosaint féin air a bhí siad nuair a mharaigh siad é. An appeals court overturned the convictions in 2020 and ordered a retrial because the court ruled that some of the evidence withheld from the first trial should have been presented to the jury. Chuir cúirt achomhairc na ciontú ar neamhní i 2020 agus d'ordaigh atriail de bharr gur rialaigh an chúirt gur cheart go gcuirfí cuid den bhfianaise a coinníodh as an chéad triail faoi bhráid an ghiúiré. The North Carolina Supreme Court agreed with that ruling in 2021. D'aontaigh Cúirt Uachtarach Carolina Thuaidh leis an bhreithiúnas sin i 2021. In closing arguments earlier today and yesterday, the Prosecution team said there were aggravating circumstances to the case - that Jason Corbett's two children were in the house at the time of the attack. In argóintí clabhsúir níos luaithe inniu is inné, dúirt an fhoireann Ionchúisimh gur bhain cúinsí géaraithe leis an chás - sé sin go raibh beirt pháistí Jason Corbett sa teach le linn an ionsaithe. The Prosecutor said that the defendants should be sentenced to an additional prison term on this matter. Dúirt an tIonchúisitheoir gur cheart téarma príosúin breise a ghearradh ar na cosantóirí ar an ábhar seo. Lawyers for Molly Martens Corbett and her father Tom Martens argued that there were mitigating factors which meant the judge should not impose any prison term. Davidson County, North Carolina. August 2nd, 2015. Molly Martens and her father, Tom Martens, killed Jason Corbett, Molly's Irish Husband, in what they claim was an act of self-defense. Tom, and his wife Sharon, had stayed over at Molly & Jason's house that night, awoke to shouting and a scuffle upstairs. He grabbed an aluminum little league baseball bat that he had purchased for his grandson, Jack, and made his way upstairs to the source of the noise; Molly and Jason's bedroom. There he claims he found Jason Corbett strangling Molly. A scuffle ensued that left Jason Corbett dead and naked on the floor of his bedroom with a caved in skull. Was this self-defense? Or was there another reason for them to kill Jason?Get bonus content from Generation Why at: patreon.com/generationwhyListen ad free with Wondery+.
