Jason Corbett was the widowed father of two young children when he began a relationship with his American au pair, Molly Martens. They moved from Ireland to North Carolina to start a new life. But it came to a violent end after Molly and her father killed Jason with a baseball bat and a brick, claiming self-defense. As authorities charged the pair with murder, the Corbett family said the attack was premeditated, accusing Molly of trying to obtain custody of Jason's kids. But when the Martens received a new trial, both sides said the true story of the marriage had yet to be revealed. The Netflix documentary film “A Deadly American Marriage” recounts the troubling 2015 case and its dueling narratives of who was the actual aggressor. It explores issues around domestic violence, unreliable testimony, and imperfect victims. It also focuses on Corbett's children, now teenagers living in Ireland, as they deal with their lingering trauma.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "A DEADLY AMERICAN MARRIAGE" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 11 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.In Crime of the Week: once, bitten. Timestamp to get straight to the case: (5:38) In 2008, Irish man Jason Corbett placed an ad for an au-pair to assist him in raising his two young children Sarah and Jack. Jason's first wife Margaret had passed suddenly in 2006, leaving him widowed with two small children. American woman Molly Martens answered the ad. She moved from her Tennessee home to Limerick, Ireland to live with the Corbett family. Molly and Jason fell in love and decided to move back to America to get married and settle. Their marriage soon soured - Jason was resistant to Molly adopting his children. Molly would regularly make comments about Jason's weight. One night in August 2015, Molly's father Tom was staying with the family in the Corbett home. He called 911 and reported that there had been an altercation at the home and he had acted in self-defense. When authorities arrived, Jason was pronounced dead. In 2017, Molly and Tom ended up being convicted of Jason's murder. In 2023, they both took plea deals in the case and were resentenced. They were freed from prison in 2024. This case is in the media again due to the new Netflix documentary titled ‘ A Deadly American Marriage.' This week on The Lo Life, Lo is joined by actress, singer, producer, and fellow true crime aficionada Hayley Orrantia for a gripping episode that dives headfirst into one of the most jaw-dropping murder cases to hit both sides of the Atlantic. Dubbed the Crime Doctors, Lo and Hayley dissect the twisted tale behind Jason Corbett's brutal 2015 murder—a case re-ignited by Netflix's hit documentary A Deadly American Marriage. His wife, Molly Martens, and her ex-FBI father claim self-defense, but a global audience (and Jason's devastated family) suspect something far more sinister. Was Molly a grieving stepmom… or a manipulative murderer? Is her tearful on-screen performance Oscar-worthy or pure sociopathy? Lo and Hayley break it all down—no legal jargon, no trauma dumping—just the facts, some morally murky questions, and the signature wit you love from The Lo Life. Sean Whelan, Washington Correspondent discusses' the release from prison of Tom and Molly Martens in North Carolina for the killing of Limerick man Jason Corbett.
Tom and Molly Martens, the father and daughter jailed for voluntary manslaughter of Limerick man Jason Corbett, are set to be released from prison today. Speaking to Shane this morning with more on this was Ralph Riegel, Southern Correspondent for the Irish Independent.
This week, father and daughter Tom and Molly Martens will be released from prison after serving just over six months for killing Jason Corbett in 2015. The pair were sentenced last November, following their guilty plea of involuntary manslaughter. Following the sentencing hearing last year, documentary maker and journalist Brian Carroll spoke to In the News, about the Marten's case and the Corbett family's long fight for justice. This is the first of a two-part episode on the case, originally published in November 2023. In the first part, Caroll explains how the Marten's used the sentencing hearing to completely annihilate Jason's Corbett's character. In episode two, available here, we hear how the Limerick man's family, including his two children, finally had their day in court to tell the world about their loving father and what their lives were like with their manipulative stepmother. After the sudden and tragic death of his wife, Margaret in 2006, Ireland native Jason Corbett needed a nanny for his two children, Jack, 3 and Sarah, 12 weeks. Along came Molly Martens, a Montessori school teacher from the United States. Molly had a bubbly personality and was great with kids, so, soon, she was hired and the Corbett's started to heal. But Molly was not who they thought she was. She had mental issues, and had been committed to a psychiatric hospital on more than one occasion. Despite all of this, Jason and Molly married in Tennessee in 2010. They then moved to North Carolina in the states. Everything wasn't great, but at least they were a functioning family. Until August of 2015 when Molly's mom and dad showed up for a visit, unannounced. By the wee hours of the next morning, Jason Corbett was dead, killed at the hands of Molly Martens and her father, Tom.Show Notes:https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/my-brother-jason-tracey-corbett-lynch/1128593449
