Mike & Tommy run through a GREAT question by one of our listeners on what to do with Power BI & Fabric development. In the Pre-Fabric era, as far as I know the most optimal architecture for dataset & report development was the following: 1, Collect data sources into Dataflows 2, Create shared datasets which load data from the Dataflows 3, Create reports built upon the shared datasets. In the Fabric era, how does the optimal architecture look like for dataset & report development? Is the Pre-Fabric architecture described above still the most optimal? If not, what's your idea on it? Power BI Desktop will remain the primary tool for dataset development or Power BI Service will take its place?Get in touch:Send in your questions or topics you want us to discuss by tweeting to @PowerBITips with the hashtag #empMailbag or submit on the PowerBI.tips Podcast Page.Visit PowerBI.tips: https://powerbi.tips/Watch the episodes live every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 730am CST on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/powerbitipsSubscribe on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/230fp78XmHHRXTiYICRLVvSubscribe on Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/explicit-measures-podcast/id1568944083Check Out Community Jam: https://jam.powerbi.tipsFollow Mike: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelcarlo/Follow Seth: https://www.linkedin.com/in/seth-bauer/Follow Tommy: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tommypuglia/
Welcome to Episode 39 of the Talent Intelligence Collective podcast! Alan Walker, Alison Ettridge, and Toby Culshaw are joined by Kumar Vaibhav, a seasoned TI professional who has built and led talent intelligence functions at Amazon, Walmart, Philips, and now Atlassian, bringing over 11 years of experience in transforming raw data into strategic workforce insights. The episode begins with exciting news as Toby announces Lightcast's acquisition of Rhetoric, bringing 800 million profiles and 280 million company records to expand their people and company data capabilities. This strategic move represents a significant shift from aggregated TI data to actionable intelligence, bridging the gap between macro workforce planning and micro-level talent acquisition needs.Drawing from his recent experience at RecFest, Toby explores how talent intelligence has become so embedded across HR functions that it no longer needs its own dedicated stage—TI is now the underlying foundation for everything from employer branding to skills intelligence. The conversation touches on the evolving landscape of AI implementation in recruiting, revealing that while efficiency gains are evident, true systematic automation remains limited.Kumar shares his remarkable journey from founding a dramatics club at university to becoming a TI leader across some of the world's largest technology companies. His insights into building stakeholder rapport are particularly compelling—from his first project at Philips where he successfully convinced leadership to change their APAC headquarters location, to developing innovative approaches like using Power BI to analyse borough-level talent distribution in New York during the post-COVID workplace transformation. The discussion delves into Kumar's unique perspective on building world-class TI functions from scratch, emphasising three critical elements: aligning with business strategy, demonstrating operational ROI alongside strategic value, and building credibility through transparency and stakeholder trust. His examples span from competitive intelligence in finance sourcing to innovative location strategies that consider both external market data and internal talent mobility patterns.Kumar offers fascinating insights into the growing prominence of TI teams in India, explaining how the evolution from cost arbitrage to genuine skills development has created a thriving ecosystem of talent intelligence professionals. His candid revelations about working with Toby—including the memorable moment when Toby questioned whether TI truly adds value—provide both humour and profound insights into the self-reflection required in this evolving field. The episode concludes with Kumar's excitement about joining Atlassian, where he's leveraging Confluence to build dynamic project repositories that double as internal databases, potentially revolutionising how TI knowledge is captured and accessed through AI-powered systems.Until next time, stay curious, stay brilliant, and most importantly, stay intelligent! As ever - big thanks to our sponsors: https://lightcast.io

B. Prozessindustrie vs. diskrete Fertigung) - Drei System-Strategien: 1. SAP-Standardmodule. 2. Custom SAP IBP-Module (z. B. Allocation in komplexen Produktionsplattformen). 3.

Laurie Harbour, Partner at Wipfli LLP, joined Jamie Flinchbaugh on the People Solve Problems podcast to discuss leadership's critical role in integrating the next generation of manufacturing talent. Laurie, author of Tradition Meets Transformation, brings over 35 years of manufacturing experience helping companies improve efficiency and profitability. Laurie explained that American manufacturing faces a significant generational gap. During the 1990s and early 2000s, parents encouraged their children to pursue four-year degrees rather than manufacturing careers, creating a shortage of workers in the 35-45 age range. This gap widened after the Great Recession further diminished interest in manufacturing careers. The result is an aging manufacturing workforce alongside a gradual influx of younger talent with different skillsets. This talent gap has created serious consequences. Laurie noted that many companies relocated manufacturing to lower-cost regions worldwide partly due to domestic worker shortages. When COVID increased manufacturing demand in North America, companies struggled to find qualified workers, often hiring undertrained temporary labor that negatively impacted quality, delivery, and safety metrics. Many manufacturers now experience 30-40% turnover rates because they fail to engage and retain younger workers. The new generation brings valuable technology skills to manufacturing, Laurie emphasized. Young workers excel at using tools like Excel, programming languages, and Power BI to analyze data effectively. Their efficiency with technology often exceeds that of experienced workers, and they naturally identify process inefficiencies that veterans might overlook. However, they lack the manufacturing process knowledge that experienced workers possess. Laurie advised that successful manufacturers create environments where generations collaborate rather than compete. Some older leaders mistakenly believe younger workers need decades of experience before making meaningful contributions. The best companies instead form cross-generational teams where experienced workers share tribal knowledge while younger staff contribute technological insights. This engagement reduces turnover, as younger workers particularly want to feel their contributions matter. For senior leaders approaching retirement, Laurie recommended embracing transformation rather than coasting on experience. She shared examples of companies that thrived after promoting younger leaders with proper support structures like advisory boards and mentorship programs. For younger manufacturing professionals, Laurie stressed the importance of humility. She observed that successful young leaders recognize they don't need to be the smartest person in the room but must facilitate dialogue and ask good questions. The most effective emerging leaders actively seek mentorship and embrace being uncomfortable as they grow. Laurie remains passionate about revitalizing manufacturing's image, particularly among women who represent 50% of the potential workforce. She's dedicated to educating school counselors and others who might discourage manufacturing careers despite their excellent compensation and technological sophistication. Discover best practices to scale Power BI effectively—improving performance, governance, and self-service across enterprise environments. Published at: https://datalere.com/articles/power-bi-best-practices-from-the-field-lessons-from-enterprise-deployments
It started as a side project. Rob Collie built a Power BI model for his rec league hockey team. Just for fun. Just to see what the data could say. But something weird happened. The dashboards were solid. The data model was solid. But, the users still had questions. And lots of them. And that's when it clicked: people don't think in slicers. They think in questions. Natural ones. The kind dashboards rarely anticipate. In this episode, Rob and Justin Mannhardt didn't just talk about Microsoft's Copilot for Power BI. They put it to the test. No tuning. No prep. Just a raw semantic model paired with real questions from actual humans. The result? A glimpse at what happens when the tech finally meets the moment. Copilot isn't just a gimmick. It understands nuance, handles filters, and points people to the answer without making them dig. And it's getting better by the day. This isn't a future-state conversation. You've already done the hard part. Now you can build on it. And if you've been wondering when AI will start delivering real value, this is a pretty good place to start. Each time I compile and curate the Database Weekly newsletter, I find lots of Fabric content from the various sources I watch to compose the newsletter. Since I primarily deal with the Microsoft Data Platform stack, this makes sense. Most of the things I am interested in are related to Microsoft, and as a result, I tend to use sources that also use SQL Server, Power BI, Fabric, and related technologies. I do look for other related data items, but I am heavily MSSQL focused. Recently, I stumbled on a piece that contains Fabric Alternatives in AWS, GCP, and OCI. It covers some of the options on these cloud platforms at a very high level. A product name and short description, but it shows there are other choices. I found it interesting that Databricks is mentioned, but not Snowflake. I'm not sure why that is, as Databricks is on Azure (and other platforms) as is Snowflake, but perhaps the author doesn't consider Snowflake a peer? That seems strange. Marketing Leadership Podcast: Strategies From Wise D2C & B2B Marketers
Dots Oyebolu and Cory Henke, Founder and CEO of Variable Media, discuss modern paid media intelligence. Cory shares insights from his journey via major agencies and platforms to build a data-first paid media agency. He unpacks the challenges and philosophies around attribution and campaign measurement and explains how business intelligence tools like Power BI help brands unlock deeper visibility into what really drives performance. Key Takeaways:(01:20) Cory's marketing journey.(04:36) Marketers who rely solely on in-platform data miss the bigger picture — merging CRM, web analytics and ad platforms reveals deeper insights.(07:51) Cory believes that attribution is unsolvable because great outcomes stem from many variables.(09:50) In a dynamic ad landscape, Cory emphasizes having a conservative projection and a flexible testing strategy.(11:16) For new brands, organic growth should precede paid media — proving demand without ad spend is key to long-term success.(13:03) Attribution models are biased by platform incentives; YouTube, for instance, creates halo effects that platforms often credit to search.(16:28) Cory's team customizes attribution by extracting campaign data from multiple platforms, merging it via Power BI for clearer performance storytelling.(21:31) CPM is Cory's favorite marketing metric — unlike other KPIs, it reveals raw costs and helps evaluate the efficiency of reach, regardless of engagement.(27:42) Staying top of mind and testing new formats is key as digital advertising continues to evolve beyond traditional performance metrics.Resources Mentioned:Cory Henkehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/coryhenke/Variable Media | LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/variable-media/Variable Media | Websitehttps://variable.media/Power BIhttps://www.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/products/power-biCory Henke on Twitterhttps://twitter.com/CoryHenkeInsightful Links:https://online.mason.wm.edu/blog/data-analytics-in-digital-marketinghttps://www.akkio.com/post/business-intelligence-in-marketinghttps://www.netsuite.com/portal/resource/articles/erp/business-intelligence-strategy.shtmlThanks for listening to the “Marketing Leadership” podcast, brought to you by Listen Network. AI wants your data, but it can't handle the truth . . . “We'll just plug our data into ChatGPT.” Sure. Sounds easy. Rob thought so too, right up until he hit token limits, had to install Python, and discovered that even two megabytes of transcripts was too much for the world's smartest models to handle. In this episode, Rob and Justin break down what happens when you try to use AI on your company's internal data. Spoiler: it's a lot more complicated than the vendors make it sound. From semantic search to retrieval augmented generation (RAG), they unpack why the dream of “ask AI anything about your business” keeps falling short. You'll hear why your Power BI model isn't going anywhere, why structured data still needs old-school engines, and what it really takes to get value from your own information. Somewhere between a cautionary tale and a tech detective story, this one tells it like it is . . . unapologetically. Run into the same situation? We'd love to hear about it! Give us a shout on LinkedIn and tell us how you overcame the limitations.

In this episode we dive into landing your next job with powerful interview secrets. The ChallengeTransitioning from a senior scheduling role at a general contractor to an owner's position at a major tech company like Google can be daunting. Schedulers must not only demonstrate technical proficiency but also navigate the shift in perspective from contractor-focused to owner-centric scheduling. In this hypothetical challenge, Greg Lawton navigates an interview conducted by Micah Piippo, highlighting critical strategies schedulers must understand, such as managing stakeholders, adapting to different corporate cultures, and influencing decision-making processes effectively.Continue LearningCheck out our new book The Critical Path Career: How to Advance in Construction Planning and SchedulingSubscribe to the Beyond Deadlines Email NewsletterSubscribe to the Beyond Deadlines Linkedin NewsletterCheck Out Our YouTube Channel.ConnectFollow Micah, Greg, and Beyond Deadlines on LinkedIn.Beyond DeadlineIt's time to raise your career to new heights with Beyond Deadlines, the ultimate destination for construction planners and schedulers. This episode of The Future Built Smarter explores the evolving landscape of healthcare design and engineering with guest Eric Vandenbroucke, Vice President of Healthcare at IMEG. “2025 started with a lot of optimism, but it's definitely been a roller coaster,” he says. Despite uncertainty in the market amid potential federal reductions in Medicare reimbursements, Eric says many healthcare clients remain focused on sustainability initiatives. “Healthcare contributes about 5 percent of global emissions,” he says. “Owners are committed to reducing their carbon.” Resiliency and future proofing are also critical. From extreme weather to human threats, resilience demands a layered approach, including redundant power, onsite water storage, and cybersecurity. Vulnerability assessments set the stage for creating future-proof plans. “The biggest thing we can help clients with is understanding the state of their building or campus and what its vulnerabilities are,” Eric says. “Healthcare facilities need to be operational—period.” Security is a top concern as well, especially in the wake of increasing threats like active shooter incidents. “We take a holistic approach,” says Eric, stressing that security requires much more than just cameras and guards. Key additional components of an all-encompassing security plan include employing the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and personnel training, including tabletop exercises. "No one wants to deal with these events, but being prepared makes a huge difference," Eric says. Technology, of course, is the main driver of innovation for healthcare facility operations, clinical operations, and delivery of care—all of which need to communicate with each other and be interoperable. “We've moved beyond siloed systems to a smart system approach,” says Eric. “Alarms, patient monitoring, building automation systems, command centers, medical records, real-time location solutions, robotics—all of those things and more have to work together.” As for artificial intelligence (AI), Eric says, “Where we are at right now in the industry is just the tip of the iceberg. Our clients are now using AI for clinical documentation, predictive analysis, optimizing their revenue cycle, using chatbots for scheduling, triage, and patient education. On the AEC side, AI is going to be a big tool for design assist. At IMEG we've developed our own AI system that helps us increase our design efficiency and accuracy. We've also developed many tools within Revit and Power BI to help with that efficiency and accuracy, and with coordination. And we continue to grow and expand the use of our virtual reality and augmented reality tools. It's all very exciting. “Technology and trends are going to continue to influence healthcare care moving forward. That's one of the cool things about healthcare: It's never the same. It's always evolving.”

Ari and Chris are back together and excited to be joined by Joey Golden, Curator of Animal Behavior Programs at Maryland Zoo! Chris and Joey both attended the recent ABMA and ISZAW conferences, and we wanted to bring him on to chat about the great presentations he gave about his zoo's progress towards "24/7 welfare" for all their animals. We chat about the importance of leaning on innovators, how Hal Markowitz has influenced his thinking about the importance of automation in modern animal care, the new role of Microsoft's PowerBI in collecting and interpreting pretty much every kind of data in a zoo you can think of, and why all of us should be focused on observation, interpretation, and improvement. Such a cool discussion! If you have a shout-out you'd like us to share, a question or a topic you'd like us to discuss, or a suggestion for a guest we should have on the show, let us know at podcast@naturalencounters.com!

Fabric personas were originally designed to break down the various functional roles within Microsoft Fabric—such as Power BI, Data Factory, Data Activator, Data Engineering, Data Science, Data Warehouse, and Real-time Analytics—into more manageable, bite-sized sections. The goal was to prevent users from feeling overwhelmed by the platform's breadth. However, this feature has since been discontinued, as it did not effectively communicate the seamless integration between these roles. Still, the underlying concepts can be useful when thinking about how you might approach Fabric from a functional standpoint. Do you like the change on one large white canvas, or did personas have a use for you? Let us know in the comments below. We hope you enjoyed this conversation on personas in Microsoft Fabric. If you have questions or comments, please send them our way. We would love to answer your questions on a future episode. Leave us a comment and some love ❤️on LinkedIn, X, Facebook, or Instagram.
