Send us a textMost of the Podcats made it to the mic this week to tackle a documentary with quite possibly the longest title we've ever attempted to pronounce after two cocktails. This is also a part of our new twist - PodCats After Dark. Which means we get pretty raunchy and the content is absolutely unsuitable for anyone under 18. Put on your headphones kitties. In short: A Deadly American Marriage covers the shocking case of Jason Corbett, an Irish businessman living in North Carolina with his wife, Molly Martens. On August 2, 2015, Jason was found brutally bludgeoned to death in their bedroom. Molly and her father—oh, just a former FBI agent named Tom Martens—fully admitted to the killing… but claimed it was all in self-defense.The documentary tries to walk a line between the two sides of the story—but let's be honest, none of us bought what Molly was selling. We may have leaned a little harder on the cocktails than the crime-solving this week, but you'll still get most of the key details, a lot of laughs, and—somehow—a spontaneous lesson on squirting from one of the kitties. You're welcome. This episode gets a unanimous 6 out of 6

This week, we're kicking off with Justin Bieber's abhorrent Instagram post ‘celebrating' Hailey Bieber's Vogue US cover, plus our love for her ‘What's In My Bag' interview. We recap the wild finale and reunion of Love Triangle Season 3 on Stan, breaking down all the chaotic moments and who ended up where (and why Mike is still a scrub). Caitlin reviews the popular new Amazon Prime series that everyone is talking about, Overcompensating, starring Adam DiMarco, Caleb Heron, and Kaia Gerber. Turning back to one of our favourite genres, true crime, we review Netflix's latest documentary, A Deadly American Marriage, which delves into the murder of Jason Corbett and our opinions on whether Molly and her father acted in self-defence or not. Finally, for The Delulu Diaries Book Club May read, we're discussing The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley: In the near future, a disaffected civil servant takes a job at a mysterious government ministry. Her role is to be a "bridge" for a person from the past who has been "rescued" from death and assigned to test the limits of time travel. This week on The Lo Life, Lo is joined by actress, singer, producer, and fellow true crime aficionada Hayley Orrantia for a gripping episode that dives headfirst into one of the most jaw-dropping murder cases to hit both sides of the Atlantic. Dubbed the Crime Doctors, Lo and Hayley dissect the twisted tale behind Jason Corbett's brutal 2015 murder—a case re-ignited by Netflix's hit documentary A Deadly American Marriage. His wife, Molly Martens, and her ex-FBI father claim self-defense, but a global audience (and Jason's devastated family) suspect something far more sinister. Was Molly a grieving stepmom… or a manipulative murderer? Is her tearful on-screen performance Oscar-worthy or pure sociopathy? Lo and Hayley break it all down—no legal jargon, no trauma dumping—just the facts, some morally murky questions, and the signature wit you love from The Lo Life. Whether you're a seasoned sleuth or true crime–curious with a low gore tolerance, this episode is for you. Stay Connected to The Lo Life! Finally, a female voice on how black love has come to the state that it is currently in by looking back to see how we got here. Join me for this in-depth discussion regarding Dr. Dianne Stewart's' book, Black Women, Black Love: America's War on African American Marriage. We go beyond just being enslaved, we cover her (and others) research from true stories via The Slave Narratives and other's biographies, and even the U.S. pension files, on how America has methodically done everything possible to keep black love as far apart and as shallow as possible from slavery up through today. Dr. Dianne M. Stewart's Bio: Dianne Marie Stewart is a professor of Religion and African American Studies at Emory University specializing in African-heritage religious cultures in the Caribbean and the Americas. She was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and grew up in Hartford, CT, USA. She obtained her B.A. degree from Colgate University in English and African American Studies, her Masters of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School, and her Ph.D. degree in systematic theology from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where she studied with well-known scholars such as Delores Williams, James Washington, and her advisor James Cone. Dr. Stewart joined Emory's Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 2001 and teaches courses in the graduate and undergraduate programs. Dr. Stewart's research has been supported by the Fulbright Scholar Program, the Abraham J. and Phyllis Katz Foundation, and other prestigious fellowships and institutions. She is the author of numerous scholarly articles and chapters, as well as three monographs—Three Eyes for the Journey: African Dimensions of the Jamaican Religious Experience (Oxford University Press, 2005), Black Women, Black Love: America's War on African American Marriage (Seal Press, 2020) and Obeah, Orisa and Religious Identity in Trinidad: Africana Nations and the Power of Black Sacred Imagination – Orisa, Volume II (Duke University Press, October 2022). She is also a founding co-editor, with Drs. Jacob Olupona and Terrence Johnson, of the Religious Cultures of African and African Diaspora People series at Duke University Press. Over her career at Emory, Dr. Stewart has won several awards including the Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award, the Emory College of Arts and Sciences' Distinguished Advising Award, and the Emory University Laney Graduate School's Eleanor Main Graduate Faculty Mentor Award. However, Dr. Stewart is most proud of her leadership of Emory's Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program, an international initiative that aims to diversify the academy by helping students from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups to earn the Ph.D. degree and secure faculty positions at tertiary institutions across the United States and South Africa. Jerry Jacobs Jr. is a life and marriage coach who offers radical new relationship advice to men struggling to accept their God-given roles in society and family. The modern narrative of marriage is riddled with lies and deceit. It's no small wonder many people are now finding their marriages in crisis. Jerry's coaching approach unflinchingly addresses the elephant in the room; namely that it's not all about love. His program teaches men to reconnect with their marital mission in order to emotionally connect with their wife or fiancé. Far from perfect, Jerry's own 'spiritual battle' forced him to reconcile with death, faith, and responsibility early on. He has been happily married to his wife, Mary Kathleen, for 21 years. According to the 2010 US census, more than seventy percent of Black women in America are unmarried. Black Women, Black Love: America's War on African-American Marriage (Seal Press, 2020) reveals how four centuries of laws, policies, and customs have created that crisis. Dianne Stewart begins in the colonial era, when slave owners denied Blacks the right to marry, divided families, and, in many cases, raped enslaved women and girls. Later, during Reconstruction and the ensuing decades, violence split up couples again as millions embarked on the Great Migration north, where the welfare system mandated that women remain single in order to receive government support. And no institution has forbidden Black love as effectively as the prison-industrial complex, which removes Black men en masse from the pool of marriageable partners. Prodigiously researched and deeply felt, Black Women, Black Love reveals how white supremacy has systematically broken the heart of Black America, and it proposes strategies for dismantling the structural forces that have plagued Black love and marriage for centuries. Mickell Carter is a doctoral student in the department of history at Auburn University. She can be reached at mzc0152@auburn.edu and on twitter @MickellCarter Learn more about your ad choices.
