I recently got a chance to sit down and talk with Civil Rights Activist and Icon Xernona Clayton ahead of the debut of her documentary "Xernona Clayton: A Life in Black and White." “Xernona Clayton: A Life in Black and White” is an elegant march through Clayton's nearly century-long life, from her years working as an aide and close friend with Dr. Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King, through her pioneering broadcasting career with Ted Turner, which led to the creation of the Trumpet Awards. Designed by Clayton to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of African Americans and those who have succeeded against great odds and inspired success in others, the Trumpet Awards continue to this day and recently celebrated its 30 th anniversary. The documentary, which was exclusive to BounceTV, originally aired on Juneteenth 2023. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chatty-passenger/support

Lighting Director/Programmer for Ringo Starr Susan is no stranger to the music business. When she made her debut appearance on stage at the age of 14, little did she know she was not only opening up her career path of being a country music singer but it would also eventually lead her to a successful career as a lighting designer and programmer. Being true to the Gemini description, this 5' 2" red-headed, blue-eyed songstress had another side to her that continued to grow over the years. Susan’s love of entertainment combined with her natural technical curiosity led her to learn more about the “other side” of show production. She graduated from Full Sail University, where she learned the technical side of the business. This education opened doors to an alternate career path that has led her to be a successful lighting designer/director/programmer, touring with various major artists such as Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band (2003 to present), Louise Mandrell, John Berry, Hank Willliams Jr. and many others, as well as working on numerous television shows (Stellar Awards, Dove Awards, Trumpet Awards, Freddy Awards, Black Music Honors, Kansas DVD and numerous TV specials), theme parks (Disney, Dollywood, Sea World and Nickelodeon), cruise ships, theaters and concerts. Her self-penned “Whole Hog Quick Reference Guide” has become an industry standard globally in teaching console programming. Her musical background allows her to naturally “feel” the music, therefore making people “see” the music. She always says it is like performing, just from the other side. Though she has a passion for lighting, the music is still in her blood and will never die out. Her dream is to take her experiences from the past 24 years and express them to you in her music.
If you have ever read the work of inspirational speaker and poet, Hank Stewart, then you might find it hard to believe that this profoundly talented writer did not scribe his first poem until May of 1991. Stewart, a published writer who has been called a catalyst for action and a messenger of hope, considers spirituality, history and love as his major influences for delving into the world of literature. A devoted Christian, Hank believes that a firm spiritual guidance can help an individual remain true to the mission of life and success. Therefore, he incorporates this belief in his poetry by encouraging people to move to new emotional heights and spiritual levels. Hank has performed at the Trumpet Awards and Essence Music Festival. He has written and performed commercials for the McDonald Corporation called "365 BLACK". He has also written and performed African American poetic rendition commercials for Fox 5 Atlanta which resulted in the winning of the 2007 Emmy, Promax and Gabby awards. He is the recipient of the Man of Distinction Award for Who's Who Award for Who's Who in Black Atlanta & Distinctive Men Award. Mr. Stewart's community service dedication has also afforded him many prestigious accolades such as the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Award. Always looking to advance his career to the next level, Stewart considers his plight as an author to inspire people to achieve maximum success and to touch as many lives as possible with a message of spirituality, love and history. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ken-warner/support

The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is coming up on Monday. The King Center announced this year's theme is “The Beloved Community: The Fierce Urgency Of Now.” The Reverend Dr. Bernice King, CEO of The King Center, says her father's message of the ‘beloved community' operates out of unconditional love, adding, "it's not about who deserves anything...it's about all human beings having this inherent worth and value.” Xernona Clayton embodies those values. She worked with Dr. King and Coretta Scott King at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the late 60s. In 1967 she became the first African American in the southeast to have her own television program. She served 30 years as an executive at Turner Broadcasting System and founded the Trumpet Awards to recognizes accomplishments of African Americans.
