•Darrin Patterson knows it is nothing short of God's favor miraculously healed from cancer, what many consider fate and simply good fortune. As a recording artist andmusical genius, his production and song-writing gifts have opened doors for him to share the stage with gospel greats such as Karen Clark-Sheard, Fred Hammond and Tasha Page-Lockhart, to name a few. His unique sound and flavor, coupled with the anointing of God, can be compared with the likes of Tye Tribbett and Israel Houghton, reaching audiences to the core of their being long after he's taken his seat. What started out as small performances at churches and weddings soon spiraled into something much bigger than Darrin intended.•After ministering in a musical, he formed Darrin Paterson & Friends, which would later become Darrin Patterson & Promise. The group's exclusive sound and unapologetic anointing was sure to move the hearts of men and women worldwide, prompting them to seek true transformation through life in Jesus Christ. Realizing that nothing occurs by happenstance or luck, Patterson is strategically committed to reaching the nations through the ministry of music and song, bringing greater glory to God.•Since the disbandment of Darrin Patterson & Promise, he's devoted his time and efforts to his debut album, “The Road”. His lead single, “Love You Forever” hasaudiences of all ages and backgrounds raving in worship, leaving a mark that can't be erased. Fortunate to travel the nation with artists of all calibers, Patterson is well on his way to destiny fulfillment and prophecy manifestation. His mission and his mandate are clear to all who surround him: to have his unwavering passion for music and songwriting to remain full of life, love and hope—ministering to souls across borders and cultural barriers.•The Single “Love You Forever” is available on all digital outlets.•Please send Let's Talk: Gospel Music Gold an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have anysuggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show. Goring “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” —Psalm 46:1 NIV Safety. We all crave it, especially when our world feels like it is spinning out of control. There have been times in my life when I felt like there is no safe place for us here on Earth. But in recent years, God helped me see that He is our safe place. I realize that no matter how unsafe our circumstances are and no matter where we live on this planet, we can go to God for safety. The Bible says that He is our refuge and strength. God is present when we face trouble. He can protect us and deliver us from evil. We just need to trust Him. There is a song by Karen Clark Sheard called “A Secret Place”. The opening lyrics of this song touch on how cruel this world can be, filling you with pain that pierces your soul. But, Sheard sings, there is a secret place where we can go for refuge. It is a place filled with peace and safety that only God can provide. A place where God’s love for you surrounds and heals your hurting heart. Sheard calls this place a “tabernacle”. It is not always a physical place on Earth like a literal modern-day church building, sanctuary or Biblical tabernacle. I believe Sheard is singing about having a place where you and God can meet in secret. Some call this their “prayer closet”. This can mean you walk into your actual closet where you hang your clothes and keep your shoes then make space to meet with God there. After watching the Christian movie “War Room” many people were inspired to create a prayer closet like Miss Clara’s. For those of you who have not seen that movie, allow me to explain what I mean. In the movie, Miss Clara (played by Karen Abercrombie), is an elderly woman with a strong prayer life. During a tour of her house that she is trying to sell, she shows her real estate agent (Elizabeth Jordan, played by Priscilla Shirer) her closet. As Miss Clara opens the door to her closet that is located inside her bedroom, she tells Elizabeth that this is her “war room”. As Elizabeth enters the small but spacious closet, she sees how Miss Clara made room in it to post her handwritten prayer requests written on paper onto the previous empty walls inside her closet. There are years-worth of prayer requests and praise reports from the prayers God has answered. Miss Clara didn’t just pray for her husband when he was alive; she prayed for everyone God put on her heart. She didn’t allow her mind to ruminate over the pain and problems in the world; Miss Clara sought God in prayer for victories she knew only He could accomplish. This is how she fought and won all her battles over the years. I would say that Miss Clara’s prayer closet “war room” was also her secret place that Sheard sings about because that was where she could shut the noisy world out and commune with God in a private, quiet, safe place. It probably is also where—outside of a Bible-believing church—she felt God’s presence strongest. It is clear to me that God comforted Miss Clara’s troubled heart every time she sought His Presence in her prayer closet. Miss Clara is a fictional character but the concept about having a prayer closet in real life is Biblical. The Bible says in Matthew 6:6 (NIV), “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Now the Bible doesn’t say exactly how or when God will reward you for spending time in secret prayer with Him, but it does say that we are blessed when we take refuge in Him (Psalm 34:8). I believe those blessings can mean that we gain a closer relationship with our Creator. We get to know Him better as our Heavenly Father and we feel safe in His arms. The Bible describes God as our “fortress” (Psalm 46:11). And the good news is we don’t need to have an actual closet to pray to Him in because God is literally everywhere in this world. We can seek refuge in Him anywhere we are on this planet. He is always with us. There is nowhere we can hide from God. He sees all and knows all (Hebrews 4:13). We can trust that He sees our pain that we experience when the world is cold and cruel. God wants us to come to Him for comfort and healing. The Bible says in Psalm 34:18 (NIV), “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” When we go to God for safety, we can trust that with Him on our side, we are going to be okay. In closing, listen a song that Tasha Layton sings called “Into the Sea”. I believe it will encourage your heart. Intersecting Faith and Life: How does it feel to know that God is our safe place? Angelo Ellerbee is an institution! The public relations maverick has worked with and guided the careers of icons and ingenues, legends and leading actors and he has built a legacy that continues to flourish decades after he began. The Newark, NJ native, who began his stellar career working in the fashion industry--designing, styling and hosting shows as fundraisers to combat the global issue of HIV/AIDS--soon found himself in the world of publicity and artist relations,In 1985, Ellerbee founded Double XXposure Public Relations, working with artists and record labels to champion the careers of such luminaries as Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Roberta Flack and reggae giants like Shabba Ranks and Patra, while also shaping the careers of supermodels and burgeoning business titans and industry leaders. But the thing that caught the attention of everyone in the music industry was that Angelo Ellerbee had a keen sense of artist development, a component of the music industry that had helped to establish artists of the Motown era especially (but an essential part of most labels) that had slowly disappeared in the ever-changing landscape of music. While continuing to serve as CEO of his flagship enterprise, Ellerbee also went on to serve as Senior VP of Publicity for Island Def Jam Records, where he brought R&B supergroup Dru Hill, music legend Mr. Biggs aka Ronald Isley of the legendary Isley Brothers, and gospel superstar Karen Clark Sheard to prominence. Double XXposure managed such major talents as sex symbol/singer Ginuwine, pop superstar Laura Branigan and rap icon DMX. Ellerbee took the helm of DMX's career, serving as President and General Manager of rap superstar's Bloodline Records. Under his leadership, Ellerbee cultivated the Def Jam imprint into a full-fledged recording company. In addition, he managed the multi-platinum recording artist himself, as he collected more than 22 million record sales in his global tallies. Never one to settle or sit on his laurels, Ellerbee has continued to expand his presence in media, writing 3 best-selling books [WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?, ASK ANGELO (46 Years of Industry Excellence) and his latest tome THE SENSE OF SUCCESS, where his no-nonsense style helps the readers tackle difficult shifts and struggles in their quest for success). He continues to work in television, partnering with BET Networks to produce 4 shows, including Harlem Hall of Fame, which will honor and celebrate the culture of the renown hamlet and such Harlem heroes as the original Black sex symbol, actor Billy Dee Williams, Congressman Charles Rangel, fashion maverick Audrey Smaltz, leading lady of Hollywood Leslie Uggams and music's buoyant bad boy for life, producer/recording artist/fashion mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs. Ellerbee also works passionately with the LGBTQ community, having served as Chairman of the Board of NYC's Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) and working with Unity Fellowship Church Movement on their 35th Anniversary Gala under the leadership of Archbishop Carl Bean, who recorded "Born This Way" during his own stellar career at Motown Records. Angelo Ellerbee is the Sultan of Swag and his capacity to transform and translate the culture has made him an industry giant for decades, and he's still standing. People+Culture: Meaningful Conversations for Today's Workplace
This week on People+Culture we sit down with Bishop Smith. Bishop L. Spenser Smith grew up the 3rd of 4 children but always seemed to standout among the Smith clan; accomplishing great things ahead of his age. Growing up as a musical prodigy, he began singing before audiences at the age of 4, taught himself to play piano at age 11, and secured his first minister of music position at age 12. Reared in a musically gifted and deeply religious family, it was clear where Bishop Smith's path would eventually lead him. After graduating with honors from Cross High School in 1989, he attended Florida A&M University, majoring in Music Education. While there, he was a member of the World Famous Marching 100 and Director of the FAMU Gospel Choir. After graduating in 1995, he worked in the Duval County Public School System as a middle school band director. In 1996, at the age of 26, Bishop Smith began his pastoral ministry at the New Testament Church, Inc. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama after the untimely passing of his father-in-law, the Reverend Charles E. Moore. His profound and courageous leadership has caused the ministry to be a life-changing force, not only in Tuscaloosa, but throughout the region and nation. In 2000 at the age of 29, he became one of the youngest men to be duly consecrated as a Bishop in his reformation, Kingdom Fellowship Covenant Ministries, based in Baltimore, MD. In 2005, Bishop Smith founded the IMPACT HOUSE in Birmingham, AL, a thriving ministry impacting the South Central region. Bishop Smith's accomplishments are numerous. They include: • Highly- Sought Life Coach & Inspirational Speaker • Stellar Award Nominated Recording Artist, Songwriter, Producer, working with gospel artists such as Donald Lawrence, Twinkie Clark, Karen Clark-Sheard, Men of Standard, and Marvin Sapp • Author of the new books, The Altar'ed Life & Getting Ready for Love • Who's Who Among American Executives and Leaders • The American Heritage of Leaders Honor Recipient • Member, Joint College of Bishops Congress, Cleveland, OH • President, Unity Covenant Fellowship of Interdependent Churches and Ministries, • CEO, Move With Him Entertainment • Senior Pastor, The Impact Nation Fellowship Church, Birmingham & Tuscaloosa • He is the husband of the beautiful Patrice Moore Smith, and the father of 3 lovely and gifted children: Jori Aaliyah, Jamel Alexander, and Jarren Andre • Doctorate of Divinity, St. Thomas Christian College, Jacksonville, FL. • A proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. As a young man, he embraces his purpose for life as one that is to empower others, especially young people, for success and achievement; encouraging a new generation of leaders to emerge through a strong belief in God and a heart for His will, and faith to persevere through life's challenges to manifest the Kingdom of God.

Performing Artist, Singer, Actress, Teaching Artist, and Activist, Denielle Marie Gray Zooms in to the Junk and Jam Hour to tell us all about her illustrious journey in performance and faith - as much like Aretha Franklin - she was raised by a Reverend Father, and naturally, the Church heavily influenced her voice, and informed her choices in music and projects. On Topic: Denielle shares her marvelous experiences of having the honor of performing and touring with Gospel heavyweights Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans, and icon Karen Clark Sheard; she talks about her edification in the arts, including her big move from Brooklyn to California to earn her double BFA's in Theater-Acting and Music-Vocal Performance; and she graciously opens up about what it was like to portray Emmett Till's mother, Mamie Till in the Off Broadway production of “Till: The Musical” - and how that traumatic story in black history affected her spiritually, mentally and performatively, and we also listen to her divine performance of 'Cherish the Child'. As an artist who showcases her activism through education that uplifts and inspires change, Denielle founded Healing Expressions Through Art -- her organization that fosters the creativity and skill set of young, passionate artists, and provides high-caliber access to elite training in performance based fields. We also shout out Author, Writer, Producer and Director Shauntay Dunbar, who Denielle so lovingly portrays in the biographical upcoming short film, 'Diving in Stilettos First.' 026: Alfred Rutherford, Jr.We’re back! This is Play It Like It’s Music, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, February 11th of 2020 Music is not content. It's connection.I've been going through it a little bit, like ya do. It's kind of grounding for me to check in with you all every week. It keeps me aligned with what I'm doing but mainly also the why. We can lose track of the Why so easily. Thanks for being here.In Memoriam: Lyle MaysI just found out about the passing of Lyle Mays, apparently after a long recurring illness. And I'm pretty gutted by this one, even though great musicians are passing with some regularity lately. It's a huge, huge loss.By the way, don't feel bad if you've never heard of him. So many artists don't get to be in the news until they either win an Oscar or they die. If this is the case for you, please do yourself a favor and put his name into that search box. With literally any note that man ever played, I felt his depth and connection to what might best be called "Musical Infinity". In fact, f**k it. I'll borrow this phrase from Allen Toussaint, which he used to describe Chuck Berry: The man is a mountain.Lyle Mays. My early dalliances with modern instrumental music were propelled in a huge way, back when I was in high school, by listening obsessively to the Pat Metheny Group. It's actually tough for me to admit that, because later I came to reject that same music and any aesthetic remotely connected to it. I went through deep phases of both loving and hating both the sound and the actual music. It's all my own s**t, maybe you can relate. I can laugh about it now, but as we're developing in music and our tastes evolve, we uncover new areas and it's common to shift gears. Some people come out of the ground just like a potato and they never change what music they like. But I'm not one of those people. I have actually changed my musical tastes so many times that I frequently forget who I am. I listen really hard, and I also play hard and practice hard. I go hard in lots of directions, and one of these was deliberately trying to throw off my addiction to what you might call "finger jazz", that supernoodle, hyper-intricate polyphony that the Metheny vibe is most associated with. I'd been weaned on it, and I became convinced that I needed to wean myself off of it. I thought it might be holding me back from getting laid or something, who knows. It was a long time ago.It can happen, and my real reasons were sound but also sad: I didn't believe I'd ever be a good enough player to work in those circles. Not only did I lack confidence, but even hearing folks - friends of mine - who played at that level made me feel bad about myself. My string playing ability seemed stuck somewhere in space between the suzuki method and the world of guitar gods, and far from those extremes I grew very lonely. I plateaued there for a long time and started to feel like I was running out of air. It hurt, and I decided I no longer could afford to listen to music that didn't shine a light on my own path forward. The complexity was too intimidating for me.I stopped believing in anything but the simplest possible music, stuff I could try to play on my cello, and my path became very narrow. I laugh about it now because I eventually healed myself and my attitude and I found a way to start playing again. It was all in my head like you might guess. And my feelings about the Metheny group eventually settled down into a loving appreciation, the kind one might feel for a friend with whom I'd lost touch over the years but for whom you have great respect. And that's where that music lives for me, it's a place of deep respect. But of course we're fortunate that Metheny is still with us and still pushing music forward.None of this is about him though.Lyle Mays was and remains the core of my connection to that group, and also very close to the trunk of my own musical tree of influences. He made the keyboards not only sing, but shine. He brought a magic to the stage, and to the very idea of musicmaking. Genius. The man was an unbelievable genius, and the music just emanated from him. I really can't put into words just what kind of player he was. Marketing folks need to sort us into genres, but the more you love music the more music you love. The more you inhabit music, the more the music will inhabit you. Lyle Mays was one of the closest things I ever saw to a pure musical being. Go listen. Start maybe with his solo album from the year 2000 and work backward, or start from the beginning and work forward. Or anywhere really. Now that there's a bookend to the man's work, maybe I'll discover my own courage and dive back in to that infinite pursuit. Here's to you Lyle, thank you for your gifts and your work which will continue to teach us.In honor of Lyle, today we're going to hear from a great piano player.
