Steve Palazzolo of Pro Football Focus joined the show. Steve said what Diontae Johnson is worth to the Steelers and what he would grant on the open market. He said looking in the $20 million range presents a challenge because he may not be a top 20 receiver in the league. Steve gave his projection of Johnson this year in the post-Ben Roethlisberger era. He talked about the shortcomings of Johnson, but said he doesn't go too hard on him for the drops. He said elite guys don't have real weaknesses. Steve dove into Jeremy McNichols, who the Steelers just signed, but said he's likely RB3 instead of a backup at this point. In the same realm, Chris asked Steve about Benny Snell at this stage in his career. On the offensive line, Steve labeled Kendrick Green as “intriguing” saying he may have more potential than Kevin Dotson in the battle for guard. Steve thinks there is a chance the Browns make a push for Jimmy Garoppolo if they get bad news on Deshaun Watson that could impact the majority of their season. Steve said corner back is the biggest question mark on the defensive side, but made mention of key players at each level of the unit. “Tuitt is a much better player” was Steve's response to being asked if Larry Ogunjobi is a better player than Stephon Tuitt, who he described as “fantastic.” Chris asked Steve what is in store for Alex Highsmith in '22-'23, saying he could provide double digit sacks.

Locked On Steelers – Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Steelers
Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Wes Uhler of Steeler Nation Radio and the 'Eers and Beers Podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers finished OTAs Thursday, but meanwhile there has been wild accusations of Najee Harris being out of shape from national analysts and personalities. Those claims couldn't be further from the truth, and anyone who's actually been to Steelers OTAs can tell you Harris is in amazing shape. Meanwhile, Stephon Tuitt's retirement opens the door to add another talent to the roster. Should the Steelers consider trade options like maybe Da'Ron Payne from the Washington Commanders? Finally, Mason Rudolph talked about how happy he is to help Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett learn the Steelers' offense despite the fact they're all competing for the same job. But in doing so, he took a shot at Ben Roethlisberger. We go over a few things said by a few of the other defensive linemen on the team about Tuitt's decision and more. With Tuitt now retired, Alex and I take a deeper look at the Steelers defensive line group and what we expect to see when it comes to players and their positions and volume of snaps. We talk about the chore that new defensive end DeMarvin Leal has as a rookie and more. Will the Steelers add an experienced defensive lineman moving forward from Tuitt's retirement? We once again address that topic and go over a few realistic options the team might have, if they add any player at all. Is there a chance that the Steelers bring back a former draft pick next offseason during free agency? We discuss that topic. With Tuitt retiring this week, Alex and I look back at the Steelers 2014 draft class and what might have been when it comes to several of those players they selected. The Steelers wrapped up their annual OTA practices on Thursday, so Alex and I discuss what all we think we learned coming out of those six practices. We talk some about the offensive line construction and what are fears are when it comes to that positional group. We also talk quite a bit about the wide receiver depth chartIs it plausible that the Steelers could trade wide receiver Diontae Johnson later in the summer? Or might they work out a long-term contract extension with him? We discuss. We wrap up this Friday show by answering a few emails we received from listeners.

Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Josh Taylor of KDKA-TV and 93.7 The Fan. The Pittsburgh Steelers announced the retirement of Stephon Tuitt Wednesday. That means the need help on the defensive line next to Cam Heyward and Tyson Alualu to help the run defense improve from being last in the NFL in 2021. That could mean Larry Ogunjobi in free agency or just that the Steelers will need to see if Chris Wormley or DeMarvin Leal can be ready for increased snap on the defensive line. Either way, Omar Khan needs to used the Steelers' newly increased salary cap space of $21 million for something on the roster. That could mean free agency, or even a trade to pick up a solid veteran. Also, Devin Bush and Myles Jack spoke after the Steelers' Wednesday OTAs. Bush explained his injury recovery process not being complete until after last season and how he feels much more comfortable with his knee/ACL. Jack spoke about his excitement to work with Bush and learn under Brian Flores. But both know, they have to be a stellar pair as sideline-to-sideline linebackers who stuff the run and help against the pass.
The Pittsburgh Steelers ranked dead last in run defense in 2021 and need to fix that problem to be a great defense in 2022. But was their adding Myles Jack in free agency along with the hope that Stephon Tuitt and Devin Bush will recover from their injuries to get back to being key defensive players? That group along with Cam Heyward, and the potential return of Tyson Alualu, could be the key to open up several other opportunities for the Steelers.Better run defense means better pass rush opportunities for sacks from T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, as well as better chances for the secondary with Minkah Fitzpatrick, Ahkello Witherspoon, Terrell Edmunds, Levi Wallace and Cam Sutton to make plays on more predictable pass plays. Also, should Antonio Brown be allowed to retire as a Steeler?CALL INTO THE SHOW AT 412-223-6644 or if international, e-mail your audio message to LOSTEELERSTOPICBAG@GMAIL.COMFollow Chris Carter on Twitter: @CarterCritiques.Theme music is 'Soul Kick' by Ceddy P, and 'Too Easy' by Nerdboy. Locked On Steelers – Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Steelers
Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, is joined by Tony Serino of the AFC North Talk show. When the Pittsburgh Steelers chose DeMarvin Leal in the NFL Draft, they added a unique defensive lineman who can help inside and outside. But that shouldn't be considered an indicator for where they see Stephon Tuitt in their future. Tuitt's injury history and potential return is a concern, but Leal's athletic profile shows he'll require a lot of work if he's going to be an interior defensive line option that will need him to gain weight, improve his strength and technique in run defense. That might mean he's part of a long term plan, but not a short term one to replace Tuitt. Also, Kenny Pickett's being drafted makes for an interesting quarterback battle with Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph. But does Pickett need to be the day 1 starter? Or will Trubisky need to be the starter that Pickett learns under. And should the Steelers trade or release Rudolph if he finishes third in the QB competition? Finally, who are the Steelers' Undrafted Free Agents? And why is Mataeo Durant a sneaky favorite of the group to become a usable backup running back? Locked On Steelers – Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Steelers
Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers' GM search has been quiet for a while as the NFL Draft approaches, but are they still looking at Louis Riddick? Or is Brandon Hunt just the guy in wait? Also, call-in questions about the NFL Draft, trades, Stephon Tuitt, and sleeper pick at different positions. Did the Steelers make a big mistake on not going after big name quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson?Who are the 2023 NFL Draft quarterback prospects that the team should supposedly wait for? Is Arkansas QB KJ Jefferson a potential star QB that could rise into being a pick worthy for the Steelers next year? How should Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert go about trading up if they really want Georgia defensive tackle Jordan Davis? How could the Steelers trade back in the first round and get more picks in the top 40 to get better value at multiple positions? A Stephon Tuitt update. And why there probably is a plan to pick Najee Harris' backup later in the NFL Draft and a look at some sleepers at safety .CALL INTO THE SHOW AT 412-223-6644 or if international, e-mail your audio message to LOSTEELERSTOPICBAG@GMAIL.COMFollow Chris Carter on Twitter: @CarterCritiques.Theme music is 'Soul Kick' by Ceddy P, and 'Too Easy' by Nerdboy. Locked On Steelers – Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Steelers
Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, is joined by Tony Serino of AFC North Talk.Pittsburgh Steelers GM Kevin Colbert spoke at the NFL Scouting Combine and talked about Stephon Tuitt's potential return as if it was a done deal and that after missing the 2020 season, the Steelers are excited to have him back. What would Tuitt's return to team up with Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith do for the Steelers' 2022 defense? Also, Tony takes a victory lap (sort of) about Mitchell Trubisky being considered by the Steelers in free agency, and Colbert dished more on how this NFL Draft has a quarterbacks class with multiple starters. Does that lock the Steelers into picking Malik Willis or Kenny Pickett in the first round? Finally, Colbert also spoke about the team needing to see more from Kevin Dotson and Zach Banner. Does that guarantee Banner's return in 2022? That in addition to positive praises for JuJu Smith-Schuster hint to the Steelers' offseason free agency plans on who they might keep and who they might go after.Follow Chris Carter on Twitter: @CarterCritiques.Theme music is 'Soul Kick' by Ceddy P, and 'Too Easy' by Nerdboy. Locked On Steelers – Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Steelers
Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast.Stephon Tuitt's absence was certainly felt for the Pittsburgh Steelers' defense that dropped to have the worst run defense in the NFL in 2021. But can he return for the Steelers in 2022? There's no definitive answer, but there are context clues from Tuitt's recent history, Art Rooney Jr.'s comments, and the obvious importance Tuitt has in how this team is constructed. He's one of the team's most expensive players in 2022 and if he returns he could be a major asset to work with T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward and Alex Highsmith. But if he doesn't that would open a lot of salary cap space for the team to use. Also, the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams are in the Super Bowl. What does that say for the future of the NFL and the direction it's going with so many young quarterbacks finding success early in their careers? What does that say for the Steelers' chances in the coming years without Ben Roethlisberger?Follow Chris Carter on Twitter: @CarterCritiques.Theme music is 'Soul Kick' by Ceddy P, and 'Too Easy' by Nerdboy.
