Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast. Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Eddie Faulkner speaks on the Locked on Steelers podcast about Najee Harris' leadership on and off the field, including how Harris stepped up for players and coaches when Dwayne Haskins sadly passed away in April. Harris isn't just making strides on the field, he's showing growth as a person off it and being a leader even while he rests during Steelers training camp. Faulkner also goes into what he sees in the Steelers' backup running back battle that seems to have fallen between Benny Snell and Jaylen Warren. Snell has taken the first team reps while Harris rests, but Warren has made lots of tacklers miss and big plays in practice. Listen to what Faulkner says Warren is doing in the classroom to combine his progress on the field. Also, Kenny Pickett exclusively ran the Steelers' second team offense. Has he surpassed Mason Rudolph? And Devin Bush takes steps forward to be the starting inside linebacker Mike Tomlin believes he will be this season. Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers got their first look at Larry Ogunjobi during Monday's training camp practice. He looked very good and made some good plays to show he'll be a high quality defensive lineman starting alongside Cam Heyward. As Tyson Alualu also returned to practice, could the Steelers' defensive line be back to being one of the best in the NFL? Also, DeMarvin Leal has been a rising camp star over the past couple of weeks. His hand technique has been sharpened by his offseason boxing training and he talks on the show about what Karl Dunbar has been teaching him to become a more complete player. With him and Isaiahh Loudermilk growing, the Steelers may have a complete depth chart of talented defensive lineman. Also, Minkah Fitzpatrick returned to practice Monday and made his presence felt right away. As the defense gets healthy, it's looking like they have a good chance to get back to an elite level. The Pittsburgh Steelers needed their offensive line to make strides in progress this training camp, and Dan Moore Jr. has led the way. Jim Wexell joins Chris Carter to talk about how he could be around for a long time and why he could be very good, very soon. Also, Kevin Dotson talks about how he's much more comfortable in his muscle memory at left guard and will be more physical and technically sound this year. Are he and Moore the key to fixing the Steelers' OL? Finally, Omar Khan has now gotten team friendly extensions for Minkah Fitzpatrick, Chris Boswell and Diontae Johnson. What's behind his hot start? The secret is his steadying the ship alongside Mike Tomlin and following the Steelers' front office blueprint that he helped put together over several years. What Diontae Johnson Learned from Stefon Diggs / Pittsburgh Steelers' Deal is Perfect For Both Sides

Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Jenna Harner of WPXI-TV. The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Diontae Johnson to a team friendly contract extension that also benefits the 26-year old wide receiver. Johnson explained his route running strengths and how All-Pro receiver Stefon Diggs has helped him sharpen his skills to be a better wideout. Johnson also mentioned how eager he's been to get to work with Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett in Steelers training camp. In his first pass from Trubisky, Johnson got open against Ahkello Witherspoon on a 40-yard deep ball and caught the pass for a big play, and he says that's only the beginning of what the Steelers' offense will be able to do this year. Finally, the Steelers' defense got back Minkah Fitzpatrick from the NFI list which means the defense might be back to full strength soon as Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt took the day to rest. But with how good the Steelers' defense looks, they've dominated the Steelers' offense in most training camp practices. Could this be a key that helps the offense improve much faster to get ready for the regular season? BREAKING NEWS: Pittsburgh Steelers Sign Diontae Johnson to GREAT 2-Year, $36.71M Contract Extension

Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast. The news broke that the Pittsburgh Steelers signed wide receiver Diontae Johnson to a two-year contract extension worth $36.71 million. The extension keeps Johnson in Pittsburgh until he's 29 years old and gives the Steelers their No. 1 receiver for the first years of Kenny Pickett's career, while also giving Johnson a well-paying deal that lets him retest the WR market before he's 30 years old. The deal is a big move by new general manager Omar Khan, who saw Johnson at Steelers training camp during his hold-in. Now, Johnson is one of the highest paid players on the team and is set to return to practice in full just a little over a week before the Steelers' first preseason game. Mason Rudolph Impress w/Steelers 1st Team Offense? / T.J. Watt on Devin Bush / Who's Master Teague?

Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Tony Serino of AFC North Talk. The Pittsburgh Steelers gave Mason Rudolph his first shot to run the first team offense. But how did he perform? Compared to Mitch Trubisky, there's obvious advantages to both early in training camp. Rudolph's timing has been an asset, but both he and Trubisky got to run two minute drills and Trubisky's veteran experience shined while Rudolph hesitated in the big moment. Still Rudolph does look like the most fluid QB in the system. Also, T.J. Watt had praise for Devin Bush and Myles Jack and what they're doing as off-ball linebackers for the Steelers defense. After Bush had a rough Monday, he's had two good practices that show he could bounce back. Finally, the Steelers put Jeremy McNichols on injured reserve and signed Ohio State rookie running back Master Teague III. Teague's speed and size could make him an interesting candidate to be Najee Harris' backup, but the Steelers are still looking for their No. 2 running back and Benny Snell, Anthony McFarland, Jaylen Warren and Mataeo Durant have all flashed potential. Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Josh Rowntree of 93.7 The Fan. Mitch Trubisky hasn't put on a highlight clinic during Pittsburgh Steelers training camp, but there are several reasons why. That includes a tough defense that plays against the first team, several key injuries to Chase Claypool, Pat Freiermuth, and Najee Harris and Diontae Johnson sitting out. practice. Compare that to the progress Kenny Pickett's made with the second team offense and the struggles he's shared with Mason Rudolph, and it's clear Trubisky still has a good hold on the QB race. Myles Jack a Stud in Pittsburgh Steelers' First Day in Pads / Kenny Pickett Rises w/No. 2 Offense

Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Wes Uhler of Steeler Nation Radio. The Pittsburgh Steelers finished their first day in full pads Monday and there were clear winners who showed out. Myles Jack was the biggest stud of the team as he dominated Backs on Backers and filled in on run defense very well. Other winners included Robert Spillane, Alex Highsmith and Najee Harris. But Devin Bush, Derek Watt and a few others looked like they could need more work. Also, Kenny Pickett got his first chance to run the Steelers' No. 2 offense and looked good doing it while Mason Rudolph struggled with the No. 3 offense. Is this a sign there's a change in the QB competition? Or just Mike Tomlin experimenting around? Finally, Deshaun Watson's recommended suspension was announced for six weeks. What that says about the Cleveland Browns, women NFL fans, the AFC North, and when the Steelers might play the Browns at full strength. Diontae Johnson Starts Hold-In / George Pickens, Calvin Austin III Show Steelers Big Play Potential

Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers had their first training camp practice of 2022 Wednesday, but also saw Diontae Johnson start his contract hold-in while he waits for a long term deal. He practiced on individual drills by himself, much like T.J. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick did before their big contracts. But that's not a big deal, as Mike Tomlin explained after practice. But there were big plays during practice from the Steelers' two rookie wide receivers in George Pickens and Calvin Austin III. Pickens made a deep reception from Mitch Trubisky for a big play and Austin took a wide receiver screen for a 61-yard touchdown from Mason Rudolph. Neither felt satisfied after practice, as Mike Tomlin said he wasn't going to "crown" either of them for their plays. But those moments showed the big play potential for the rookies. Also, Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett worked with Trubisky. Rudolph had the best day to start camp, but that doesn't move the needle yet in the quarterback battle. Also, Damontae Kazee was seen taking the replacement reps at safety for Minkah Fitzpatrick. What benefits will his experience bring? Pittsburgh Steelers' Youth/Depth, Best Asset in Offensive Rebuild / Players Report to Training Camp

Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Josh Taylor of KDKA-TV and 93.7 the Fan. The Pittsburgh Steelers report to training camp Tuesday, but what aspects of their team are the least talked about heading into training camp? For one, the way Mike Tomlin and Matt Canada get back on track is to depend on the team's youth and depth at several positions. Between Najee Harris, Pat Freiermuth, Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool, George Pickens, Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett, this is a group that can be reshaped in a way we've never seen the Steelers offense. Also, how does the Steelers' secondary work out with their experienced NFL cornerbacks and safeties? Ahkello Witherspoon, Cameron Sutton and Levi Wallace battle for outside cornerback with the odd man out jumping into the slot cornerback battle with Arthur Maulet and Tre Norwood. Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin gets to play around with three starter-capable safeties in Minkah Fitzpatrick, Terrell Edmunds and Damontae Kazee. That's a lot of assets to a deep secondary. Also, a caller asks more about how Tomlin handled Ben Roethlisberger, whether he coddled the quarterback too much and how it was important he get the team through the Roethlisberger era unscathed. Did Ben Roethlisberger Go Too Far About Pittsburgh Steelers Culture, Mike Tomlin, During Interview?

Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Wesley Uhler of Steeler Nation Radio. Ben Roethlisberger's recent interview with Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette opened up his opinions on how his final years went with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He talked about the lack of leadership, lack of maturity and the coddling of younger players during the second half of his career. He also took a veiled shot at Mike Tomlin on the coddling of players and said both Tomlin and Kevin Colbert didn't want him around in his final season. Was Roethlisberger in the wrong for airing out laundry on Steelers management and talking down the locker room? That's something to consider as Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph battle for QB1 at training camp, while Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Najee Harris try to reset leadership for the Steelers moving forward. Do Tomlin's Steelers have a "me-first" problem in the locker room? Former NFL player Ross Tucker criticized the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive line Wednesday. But were his comments correct? The OL may be the weakest part of the roster, but the additions of James Daniels and Mason Cole look to be stabilizing free agent additions. As the Steelers get ready for training camp, offensive line coach Pat Meyer has to bring the line together with Chukwuma Okorafor, Kevin Dotson, Kendrick Green and Dan Moore Jr. all to develop chemistry to block for Najee Harris and protect Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett. But what are realistic expectations for this group? Also, Chris Carter and Tony Serino give their Steelers jersey power rankings for fans to buy this season. If the starters can reinstate a stout run defense while doubling as a pass rush group, and the backups must provide adequate spell snaps to keep Heyward and Ogunjobi fresh for fourth quarters. A lot of this competition will come down to Matt Canada's playbook and Trubisky's command of it. But if Trubisky does start, that's not the bad sign for Pickett that some may think from the NFL Draft. A fan asks a question about who's more athletic: Trubisky or Pickett? Trubisky may have the better 40-yard dash time, but Pickett does have several particular advantages in football athleticism. Pittsburgh Steelers' Cam Heyward Feels Dissed By Lower Rankings, Ready to Spark Defense's Return

Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Jenna Harner of WPXI-TV. Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward has made it clear lately on his new podcast Not Just Football that he's not happy with ESPN's ranking that placed him as the NFL's No. 5 defensive tackle. There's been a lot of outlets who've ranked Heyward lower than he believes he should be in the NFL after being First Team All-Pro with 10 sacks in 2021. That fires up Heyward, and in turn, the rest of the Steelers defense. Heyward also discussed how the Steelers' quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Mitch Trubisky will need to be ready to face real pressure from the Steelers' defense in training camp practice. If Heyward, T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith and company can provide good pressure in practices, it will help the offensive line and the new quarterbacks acclimate to the Steelers' system faster and be more ready to lead the team in the regular season. The Pittsburgh Steelers' stadium is no longer named Heinz Field, and now will be called Acrisure Stadium for the next 15 years. But what led to an insurance company from Michigan taking over for a historic Pittsburgh company like Heinz? The answer is in the naming rights contract that pays the Steelers $150 million over the next 15 years, a price Heinz couldn't afford. It also points to Steelers minority owner Thomas Tull's involvement as a Chairman for Acrisure. Chris Carter lists other suggestions like Iron City Beer, Primanti's Sandwiches and other famous Pittsburgh companies Steelers fans wanted to see over Acrisure. Meanwhile, a caller asks how vital it is for Mike Tomlin to get a winning record in his first year without Ben Roethlisberger. But the truth is, Mike Tomlin is already 18-15-1 without Roethlisberger. That's 34 games--two full seasons--and Tomlin already has a winning record with backups. What he could do with Mitch Trubisky and/or Kenny Pickett could be even better. Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Tony Serino of AFC North Talk. The Pittsburgh Steelers might have a secret weapon on their hands in the form of a solid tight end group. Pat Freiermuth burst onto the scene last year as one of the most promising rookie tight ends of his class, but Zach Gentry has taken significant strides as a No. 2 tight end as well. How much can offensive coordinator Matt Canada work both into an offense around new quarterbacks Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett? And will Heyward be part of the plans as well? Also, a caller asks about the lasting impact of Mike Munchak as an offensive line coach. Chris Carter and Tony Serino review Munchak's work with Maurkice Pouncey, David DeCastro and the 2010s offensive line stars. What does Pat Meyer need as the Steelers' new offensive line coach to get a strong group from James Daniels, Kevin Dotson, Mason Cole, Chukwuma Okorafor, Dan Moore Jr. and Kendrick Green? Why Pittsburgh Steelers Aren't Looking to Break Up Terrell Edmunds and Minkah Fitzpatrick / Fan Q&A

Chris Carter, Steelers writer at SteelersNow.com, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers won't be looking for a replacement for Terrell Edmunds anytime soon because of how well he pairs with Minkah Fitzpatrick. Sure, Edmunds doesn't make a ton of splash plays with interceptions, but he's gotten better at picking off quarterbacks with four in the last two seasons. But a big factor for Edmunds' role is still how well he combines size with speed, quickness and burst to cover various offensive positions like wide receiver, running back and tight ends. That will still keep Edmunds as a starter over Damontae Kazee and Karl Joseph, but it doesn't mean a training camp battle won't happen under Mike Tomlin. Also, should the Steelers look at Troy Polamalu's nephewe Isaiah Pola-Mao? And should they kick the tires on free agent and former first round pick offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson? Finally, more fan questions ask about the best time to visit Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA for Steelers training camp, and learn about how the Steelers pick team captains and who Chris Carter predicts to be team captains for the 2022 season. Brian Flores / Pat Meyer / Frisman Jackson: Who's the Most Important New Steelers Assistant Coach?

Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Jenna Harner of WPXI-TV. The Pittsburgh Steelers made several coaching staff changes by adding Brian Flores as a defensive assistant, Pat Meyer as offensive line coach and Frisman Jackson as wide receivers coach under Mike Tomlin. But which of them will have the biggest impact on the 2022 season and beyond? Flores is an obvious choice with his pedigree and how closely he works with Devin Bush and Myles Jack while also helping across the defense. But Meyer has a very important task to fix the Steelers offensive line. Comments from Kevin Dotson, James Daniels and other Steelers linemen note how his experience has brought different upsides than they've had in previous coaches. Frisman Jackson's approach appears to be more hands-on with the Steelers receivers, and that could help Chase Claypool, Diontae Johnson, George Pickens and Calvin Austin III set a new tone for the team. Also, a caller asks what it would take for Najee Harris to make second year leap like Jonathan Taylor did for the Indianapolis Colts. Is it more about Harris' improvement? Or does the rest of the offense just have to catch up? Brian Flores / Pat Meyer / Frisman Jackson: Who's the Most Important New Steelers Assistant Coach? When the Pittsburgh Steelers picked Kenny Pickett in the first round, many wondered how high his potential could reach. Recently, former Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy said he didn't see any differences between Pickett and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. While some of Pickett's and Burrow's strengths align with accuracy and leadership, and their paths in college both shared quick rises in their final years, there's a reason Burrow went first overall and Pickett went 20th in the NFL Draft. The Washington Commanders paid Terry McLaurin $71 million over three years and the Philadelphia Eagles paid A.J. Brown $100 million over four years. Both deals average out over $23 million per season. Is Johnson worth that kind of pay? Stats and context give the answer. Also, if Johnson can't be paid, should Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan look to trade him? Franchise tag? Let hit free agency in hope for a compensation pick? Finally, a caller asks if CB1 is on the Steelers roster right now. There are a lot of CB2s in Cameron Sutton, Ahkello Witherspoon and Levi Wallace. And can Pickens outdo top receivers in this draft class like Drake London, Treylon Burks, Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave and Jahan Dotson? Also, if Pickens beats out that competition, does he become the favorite for offensive rookie of the year? The gambling odds place him at +4000 which could maker for a massive payout if the Steelers succeed at rebuilding the offense and Pickens becomes a primary part of that.
