LISA PARKER on DIXON OF DOCK GREEN and more! This week's returning guest from our panel of returning regulars is LISA PARKER from the ROUND THE ARCHIVES podcast who volunteered to take part in another of our more random chats which sometimes happen when there's not much going on in the wider world of ever decreasing telly appreciation circles, at least nothing much that I'm paying all that much attention to. But things have been getting rather exciting lately with regards to the rediscovery of missing television, and whilst we can't quite get the flags and bunting out because the entire missing ABC archive hasn't turned up, there are still those occasional golden nuggets that are found that give some of us jaded old hands just a little bit of hope that there are indeed still many archive TV gems to be found out there. And so, knowing that LISA is a big fan of crime dramas, and has been something of a champion when it comes to advocating just how good DIXON OF DOCK GREEN is in the face of much suggestion of its perceived air of cosiness (often from many who've never bothered to watch it), it was something of a joy when TPTV announced the discovery of DUFFY CALLS THE TUNE from its fifth series in 1959, one of those finds from the missing episodes of 1950s telly that are just about as rare as hen's teeth, and unfortunately, mess with the previously neat mathematics of missing DIXONS. Perhaps more amazing too is the fact that TPTV were allowed to actually broadcast the episode very quickly after its discovery, and make it available to all of exactly the sort of viewers who are most eager to see such newly rediscovered gems. So anyway, with LISA (and, you may notice, a sleeping cat) in place, it didn't take long before we got talking about this find, DIXON OF DOCK GREEN in general, and several other topics across a free-flowing hour of exactly the kind of telly-related chat that VISION ON SOUND is here to provide. By Jorge de Campos in Dallas, TX - May 11, 2024 - There are many Bible versions available today. As we want to carefully study God's Word we need to understand how Satan has subtly modified the manuscripts from which the various Bible versions were translated. Additionally, translators have in good faith tried to make the text easier to read, but in so doing, they have inadvertently changed the meaning to that of their own religious belief and understanding. As God's people we need to be made aware of these doctrinally dangerous pitfalls. [NOTE: TO DOWNLOAD THE SLIDE PRESENTATION FOLLOW THE DOWNLOADS LINK]

STEVE HATCHER looks at some of the more obscure 1960s sitcoms. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on May 12th 2024 This week, STEVE HATCHER returns and we're going to start a short occasional series in which STEVE talks about some of the more obscure or forgotten sitcoms of the 1960s. Whilst we're all probably rather over familiar with the more famous sitcoms of that era, the likes of HANCOCK”S HALF HOUR, STEPTOE AND SON, and DAD”S ARMY were all on TV during that decade, and rightly went on to become mainstays of the conversations we as a nation often have about the comedy of that era, we do sometimes neglect many of the lesser known TV comedies that were on during that rather innovative decade. Several have, of course, been quite rightly forgotten because they were awful, and many suffer from the problem that is the bane in the lives of many archive TV enthusiasts, in that they were largely wiped, but, as STEVE explains, amongst the ones that do at least partially survive, there's rather a lot of largely forgotten TV gold to be found. Well, I say forgotten, but this week's selection include several very familiar and even rather iconic TV sitcom titles, but I do sometimes suspect that even these are largely forgotten in the wider world as they are all from the nineteen sixties, were mostly shot in black and white, and haven't enjoyed quite as much exposure over the years as some of the more well-known comedies of the 1970s have enjoyed as their repeats endlessly cycle around. So today we'll be talking about the demob happy BOOTSIE AND SNUDGE, the workplace trials of THE RAG TRADE, the domestic travails of MARRIAGE LINES, and the age old battles of GEORGE AND THE DRAGON, along with a few other shows that happen to get mentioned along the way. STEVE's drawn up a list of around fourteen of these kinds of shows for us to talk about, and, given that this first hour only covered around four of them, I suspect that we will be returning to the topic at least a couple more times as the year rolls along, so you've all got that to look forward to over the coming weeks. From playing drums in punk bands before a broken wrist found him with 6 months off and time on his hands to teach himself how to make movies through watching YouTube tutorials… to his musical approach to his filmmaking craft… to the crazy story of how his short film playing at a horror convention lead to him raising the financing for YUMA (in theaters now)… to writing the film's script based around the locations and resources he knew he could get… to how accepting an offer to option his script almost prevented his film from ever getting made… to how he shot in a commonly used location yet made it appear unique… and how he was able to put such an incredible cast together on such a limited budget… Francis' success story will surely inspire every aspiring filmmaker that hears it! PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI, returns with some telly set in the middle of nowhere. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on May 5th 2024 This week, because he felt like getting away from it all, PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself is back, and, in coming on this show, he's obviously picked exactly the right place to do it. Well, perhaps not, but PAUL has been watching several shows that he realised were basically set in the middle of nowhere, and, as such, thought that they might make for a pleasant edition of VISION ON SOUND, so here we find ourselves chattering about a rather eclectic mixture of shows both old and new including SURVIVOR, A MURDER AT THE END OF THE WORLD, DEATH AND OTHER DETAILS, and TREASURE HUNT, as well as a whole life-raft of other stuff that gets bunged into the mix whenever we get going. Filmmaker Dave Parker (THE HILLS RUN RED, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, PUPPET MASTER: DOKTOR DEATH, IT WATCHES) returns to THE MOVIE CRYPT to discuss the making of his latest film YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE LET ME IN (now playing on Tubi). From the whirlwind process of being hired to direct the project and immediately shipping off to Italy… to the supposedly “haunted” villa that much of the film was shot in and filming in a real underground tomb… to the challenges and the joys of helming a film as a “work for hire” while still finding ways to creatively make it your own… to the secrets for winning over a new crew… to returning to work with the great Charlie Band and directing PUPPET MASTER: DOKTOR DEATH (2022)… to how to stretch a production's extremely limited resources to create the best possible film… to why editing experience can be so crucial to directing… Dave's experiences from the last several years are an inspiring lesson on how to hang in there when it feels like things aren't going the way you want it to and just how quickly the tide can change. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a filmmaker who is working crew jobs while looking to prepare for the moment when he steps into the director's chair, Dave dishes on the food in Italy, and the group nerds out on the 2024 Oscars and the movies they've been digging. Stage performance choreography Frog Kissin' Lyrics words and music by Buddy Kalb, arrangement Marc Gunn Do you remember in the fairy tale, how the wicked witches spell Turned the handsome prince to a toad? By the power of a potion, she handed him the notion He was lower than the dirt in the road. And though she left him green and warted, her evil plans were thwarted Their chanced to happen by a young miss Who in spite of his complexion, offered him affection And broke the wicked curse with her kiss So if you've never been frog kissing Then you don't know what you've been missin', There's a wealth of opportunity under each and every log. And if you've never been charm-breakin', Then you've never been handsome prince makin'. You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down, Kiss you a frog! Once upon a time ago, I was down and feelin' low Like a lonely frog in a pond My life was just a joke, and I was just about to croak Cuz I'd be zapped by life's wicked wand. But in the depths of my depression, there came a true expression Of love from a person so sweet. She gave me warm fuzzy feelings, feelings that were healin' And she knocked me off my little webbed feet. There's a happy-ever-after-land, deep in the heart of man Where a prince and princess abides. But all we get are glimpses, of the happy prince or princess 'Cauce they're covered with a green warty hide. Though they're full of life's potential, they're lacking one essential To enable them to shine like a star. That's a handsome guy or missus, to smother them with kisses And love them just the way that they are. That's the secret of frog kissing You can do it too if you'll just listen There's a wealth of opportunity under each and every log. That's the secret of charm-breakin', That's the secret of handsome prince makin'. These are questions that should be very meaningful to us as Christians.

In my last message, I covered the Holy Spirit and in thinking about Pentecost, it prompted three questions we are going to answer today: What do we know about the Day of Pentecost? What does the term First Fruits refer to? And, what do the Wave Sheaf and the two Wave Loaves associated with Pentecost symbolize?

Hungarian athlete Márk Dévay, a former World Aquathlon champion, was also up there, as was WTCS leader heading into today, Vasco Vilaca.   By the end of the swim, things where more of the same at the front, with Dévay keeping things honest as he lead out of the water, with Riddle, Schoeman, Coninx, Vilaca and a number of others close by. Most importantly, Alex Yee and Hayden Wilde, two of the pre-race favourites, were just +0:15 down out of the water and in perfect position.   Further back, Olympic champion Kristian Blummenfelt was just over half a minute behind at the back of the second group, with compatriot Gustav Iden ten seconds further back at +0:47 and Richard Murray of the Netherlands the last out of the water a minute down after Spaniard Mario Mola withdrew.   Bike – Blummenfelt left stranded Out of transition, there was a mad scramble to make the front pack, as two dozen athletes, including Wilde, made it into the front pack, with the second group featuring the likes of Blummenfelt. The chase pack, sensing danger, worked hard over the first lap to close the gap, but was unable to, with the gap then quickly blowing out.   After three laps, the gap was well over half a minute, with Wilde drilling the pace at the front of the lead group, as the chase group struggled to make back any time despite featuring the firepower of the likes of Blummenfelt and Swiss Simon Westermann, who on multiple occasions tried to drag the chasers along.   By halfway, the gap was up to +0:50 with the front pack showing no signs of slowing, as Belgian Martin Van Riel, returning from a long period out with injury, returned to the front of a WTCS bike pack for the first time in close to a year.   Off the bike, the gap back to Blummenfelt and the rest of the chase pack was +1:15, with the front pack, thanks to the hard work of the likes of Van Riel and Wilde, enjoying a comfortable buffer coming into transition.   WTCS Cagliari 2023 Results Saturday May 27 2023 – ELITE MEN 1.5km / 38k / 10k   1. Beaugrand ran, dived and swam away from the rest in the choppy sea before Maya Kingma and Vittoria Lopes took over, particularly on the second lap.   Lopes was first to hit the timing mat after 1500m in 19:39 while Summer Rappaport, Beaugrand, Kingma and Sophie Coldwell and just about everybody else except Taylor Knibb, were bunched up with her. Potter and Taylor-Brown were 9th and 10th out, but there was really nothing separating them as they all burst into transition.   Bike – All aboard the Knibb train The short transition was executed cleanly and quickly by everyone and a huge bunch left transition. The pace looked to be on from the start, but Knibb overcame a 30-second deficit from the swim and caught them by the third of 10 laps.   She hit the front, blew the pack apart on the fourth lap and it was a rare moment that she wasn't on the front for the rest of the cycle leg. The British trio of Taylor-Brown, Coldwell and Waugh rode in the front group of 11 athletes, but Potter and Beaugrand were dropped.   By the time the leaders hit T2, the group had put 1 min 44 seconds into the chase group, which contained Potter and Beaugrand.   Advertisements Run – GTB takes control The group of 11 leaders were separated by no more than a second coming into transition, but it wasn't long before Taylor-Brown hit the front along with Knibb and Emma Lombardi.   By the third of four laps, Taylor-Brown hit the front and stayed there to cross the line in front to claim another excellent victory in 2022.   She said: “I just tried to run my own race and tried to stay in contact with that bike group. Taylor made it really hard but it worked in our favour because we got a really good gap.   “I forgot how hard she rides, but it's good, she really gets the group going and we're all trying to hang on to her wheel.   “I started speaking to the girls on the first two laps (of the run), ‘lets work together because this could be the podium.'”   On extending her Series lead over Flora Duffy, who wasn't there today, she said: “It's all going to come down to Abu Dhabi now.”   Lombardi was delighted to win silver, her first ever WTCS medal, she said: “I'm really enjoying racing against the best in the world, it's fantastic.”   Beaugrand ran up to eighth place and moved in to third position overall in the Series. Potter finished 10th, which moves her down one place to fourth in the Series.   WTCS Cagliari 2022 Results Saturday October 8 2022 – ELITE WOMEN 1.5km / 38k / 10k   1. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on May 28th 2023 Despite the slick operation we try to give you the impression that we are running here as we take our weekly deep dives into the world of archive television here on VISION ON SOUND, sometimes my regular co-host, WARREN CUMMINGS, and I agree to meet up and record our latest show with not much actually planned for what we're going to talk about. I nearly said “with little in mind” there, but regular listeners might have quite reasonably felt able to suggest that we rarely have much in mind on the shows we do, but, knowing that might be just too much of a temptation for all of you, I decided to think again. TWO thoughts already this week? My! I must be spoiling you! Anyway, this week I did actually have something of a plan in mind, but WARREN had other ideas, and our conversation set off down quite a different path from the one I expected, and, perhaps rather surprisingly, I think it makes for a strangely fascinating show despite ourselves. Because, by simply prompting us with the name one of those fine character actors from back in the day that we often enjoy the work of here on VISION ON SOUND, we went on something of a journey which involved FOGGY, BLAMIRE and ENTWISTLE, a LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE trio that never happened, as well as touching upon the world of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE LIKELY LADS?, CORONATION STREET, and DALLAS in a whistle-stop tour of popular television that made for a rather disparate set of travelling companions for us this week. And whilst we don't often get too philosophical or thoughtful when we get together to do these shows – WARREN and I both being people who have not very well hidden shallows where other people's depths might be – we do have a rather interesting conversation about regional television, the use of regional accents, whether genuine or otherwise, and that tricky little matter of the portrayal of ethnic minorities in some of the old telly we watch, some of which you might perhaps find massively inappropriate for a couple of blokes like us to be chatting about, but which I hope you'll at least find interesting if nothing else. Incidentally, it sometimes happens that, because these chats catch us unawares (as it were), one or two of the facts and figures don't quite spring as easily to mind as they might do if we were more professionally prepared. “Professionally…!” Anyway, this meant that I completely forgot the name of SAM in GETTING SAM HOME, as well as struggling with names such as DINO SHAFEEK and CARMEN MONROE which, whilst we usually get there in the end, sometimes fall out of mind in the cut and thrust of these recording sessions. And, whilst we did finally get around to talking about what I had been originally going to suggest, that all featured in a separate and quite throat gravelling second recording that I'm now saving for another time. So, with that blatant attempt to add a certain amount of intrigue and anticipation into our keen and eager audience, I'll simply hop over to the controls and kick up those FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL time engines, click on the randomiser, and wonder where the hell we are going to end up. Hopefully it's not SKARO, and, with my luck, it's probably not going to be during a Parisian springtime, but we are likely to hop over those Pennines and find ourselves, at least obliquely, in and around Holmfirth with one or two of its better known inhabitants. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on May 21st 2023 Long time listeners to VISION ON SOUND will already be aware that PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI, our returning guest on this week's edition, is a very avid fan of the TV detective series BERGERAC, and, whilst he has mentioned this from time-to-time on his appearances, we realised that we'd never had a sit down to just talk about that show.   So this week we decided to rectify that omission, and for the next hour we have a nice little chat about what it is about that particular cop show, mostly set on Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, which he found appealing enough to ensure that he not only has the complete series on his shelves so that he can watch it whenever the mood catches him, but also that he has an emergency backup set of BERGERAC just in case the first goes wrong, and yet another set – albeit one featuring inferior edits of the programmes – stashed in another place in case the first two can't be accessed.   Think of it as being a bit like prepping for archive TV enthusiasts.   The series BERGERAC was first made and broadcast by the BBC in 1981, and continued to make regular appearances in the schedules for more than a decade, finally signing off, nine series, and eighty-seven episodes later on Boxing Day, 1991, and seems slightly unusual nowadays for not being a detective series based around characters adapted from a series of novels.   BERGERAC was created by ROBERT BANKS STEWART, as is rather well known, as a replacement for his previous series SHOESTRING which came to a sudden abrupt end, and left the BBC looking around for a similar but different Detective series to fill its place in the schedules, and, BERGERAC must be considered to be a very successful solution to a rather interesting problem.   The series starred JOHN NETTLES as JIM BERGERAC, a detective with a troubled past, TERENCE ALEXANDER as his troublesome ex-father in law CHARLIE HUNGERFORD, and SEAN ARNOLD as his boss BARNEY CROZIER at the newly formed  “BUREAU DES ETRANGES” on the Channel Islands, alongside several glamorous women like CECILE PAOLI, CELIA IMRIE, LOUISE JAMESON, THERESE LIOTARD, DEBORAH GRANT and LISA GODDARD, who seemed to find Jim irresistibly attractive, sometimes for several seasons in lead and guest roles, alongside a whole host of exactly the sort of character actors that the likes of viewers like me enjoy spotting in these kinds of shows.   BERGERAC made the most of its picturesque JERSEY locations, and the vintage 1947 burgundy-coloured TRIUMPH ROADSTER Jim drove, to delight audiences across the 1980s, and PAUL has very fond memories of growing up watching this series, not least because of the childhood holidays he spent on the island. This year, Herring will return to defend her title.   In our preview below you can find everything you need to know, from start times to streaming information, plus a preview of the professional women's field.   Start time and how to watch live The race takes place on Sunday 22 May 2022.   The Pro race will start at 0650 local time (Eastern). That corresponds to 1150 in the UK and 1250 CET.   The race will be shown live, with the event the fourth of 12 IRONMAN 70.3 events to be broadcast in 2023 in a partnership with Outside TV. You will be able to watch for free via web, mobile or connected TV app.   As always, the ever reliable IRONMAN Tracker is the perfect data addition to support your viewing. If you haven't got it on your phone already, where have you been?!   Pro Women In the professional women's field, Canadian Paula Findlay will line up for her third race in a month as she looks to take her first 70.3 win of the season.   Paula Findlay PTO European Open 2023 run [Photo credit PTO / Darren Wheeler] Findlay, currently ranked PTO #4, will be racing off the back of an impressive fifth place finish at the PTO Tour European Open in Ibiza, where she raced strongly from start to finish.   Defending champion Hering will hope for another win in Tennessee, but against a field of this calibre, which has a strength of field rating of 83.37, might struggle, with her best result this season fifth at IRONMAN 70.3 St George.   The winner from that race, Jeanni Metzler, is set to go again after that emotional return to the top of a podium, after a long period when she doubted she would ever race again.   She told us this week: “It's kind of a quick turnaround but I've decided I just want to toe the line again. I haven't raced that much in the past 18 months so it's going to be good practice to just maybe improve some things on a different course and in different conditions. So I'm looking forward to racing again.”   Along with Skye Moench (second) and Danielle Lewis (third), the full St George podium from that North American Championship race will go head-to-head again.   Metzler Moench Lewis IRONMAN 70.3 St George podium 2023 [Photo credit: Jacob Kupferman / Getty Images for IRONMAN] [Photo credit: Jacob Kupferman / Getty Images for IRONMAN] The event could also potentially see the season debut of Sarah True, who as if balancing professional triathlon and family was not enough, is also fitting in a full-time university course! Little seems to slow True down though, the two-time Olympian winning both IRONMAN Lake Placid and IRONMAN Arizona in 2022.   Advertisements Prize Money: What's on the line? It can be joyful. It can be heartbreaking. It can be empowering.   Just ask Golden-based lawyer Megan Hottman (aka The Cyclist-Lawyer), who is one of six bicyclists featured in The Engine Inside, the newest cycling film coming out this summer by Anthill Films.   Narrated by Phil Ligget, The Engine Inside shares the stories of bicyclists from all over the globe who reveal the unique power of the bicycle to change lives and build a better world. “I feel incredibly honored to be featured as one of the six people in this film, when I know that Anthill Films had a long list of amazing humans with amazing stories to choose from,” said Hottman.   Hottman is well-known in the cycling community for her dedication to making Colorado a better place for bicyclists. Her tireless work on behalf of all bicyclists has resulted in numerous, and hard-fought positive outcomes for the cycling community.   She notably represented the family of U.S. Masters road race champion (and friend and former teammate) Gwen Inglis who was killed by a driver in 2021 and was awarded an unprecedented $353 million verdict in a civil lawsuit against the driver.   The Engine Inside offers a rare glimpse into how Hottman experiences the world as a bicyclist- both in public and private life.   Specifically, the film captures Hottman at her most vulnerable- at a ghost bike dedication for Inglis shortly after she was struck and killed by a driver. Or, when Hottman herself is hit by a pickup truck driver and suffers serious injuries.   Hottman said, “One part I am happiest about is the inclusion of Gwen's story in my section- and that now she'll be known and honored globally everywhere the film is shown. It's one small way to keep her name and legacy alive and shared.”   “I'm not afraid to show my emotions -on film or off- as we're all in this human experience together and it's hard. To pretend otherwise does our experiences a disservice. I am who I am, real and raw, and at times emotional. I'm glad the film captures that range of emotions not just in my story but in other character stories as well,” she continued.   While a bicycle can have a positive impact on physical and mental health, it can also be utilized as a powerful tool for social change, as Hottman demonstrates.   By deconstructing the lived experiences of bicyclists, The Engine Inside urges audiences to consider what can be accomplished by simply riding a bike. What change can we make every time we get on the saddle?   Transcending geographical borders, economic circumstances, and language barriers, the transformative power of the bicycle to those who use it in their daily lives is inspiring.   “We were looking for really well rounded people that had an amazing story to tell, and that each had a connection to the bicycle from a different perspective,” explained The Engine Inside director Darcy Wittenburg.   “Although there is some overlap with some of them, they each represent some of the major ways bicycles help humanity from mental health to transportation and everything in between,” she continued.   The narratives shared by The Engine Inside are as diverse as its six participants. Their stories confront a culture that revolves around cars, and encompass global issues that range from climate change, more livable cities, socio-economic inequality, and indigenous trauma.   Despite often formidable personal and systematic obstacles to overcome, each bicyclist used the bicycle as a catalyst for hope and agency.   Threading their powerful stories into a cohesive narrative was also a challenge. “There's so many ways to look at this as it was a challenging project all around! Narrowing down the vast world of cycling into an 80-minute film was probably the first and ongoing challenge for us,” said Wittenburg.   “The main motivation was to focus the film on personal stories that many people can relate to. It was a tricky balance keeping the topic of cycling in the background so the characters' connection to cycling could shine through,” she added.   Sponsored by Hottman Law Office, The Engine Inside Golden premiere will take place 5:30 to 8 PM on June 29 at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased here. Proceeds will benefit Bike JeffCo.   “We're really excited to be part of sharing a film that has the potential to change how bicyclists are perceived! The bicycle is truly a vehicle for making change, both in individuals and communities,” said Bike Jeffco Chair, Jan Stevenson.   “From the time you are a new rider, you learn how to be resilient, how to navigate, how to solve problems. You build confidence in your ability to get things done. These stories take that confidence and show how to elevate these abilities to bigger solutions to bigger problems,” she continued.   Stevenson remarked how fitting it was that The Engine Inside's overarching theme intersects with the mission of Bike Jeffco. “We want to share the joy of biking! The shared global stories really highlight the wide range of positive impacts that simply riding a bike and having access to bikes, can bring to a community,” she said. “Biking is fun, exhilarating, and hard work all at once! The sense of freedom and empowerment that comes with the ability to control where and when we go places is huge,” concluded Stevenson.   Bike Jeffco will be holding a Meet and Greet at Colorado Tap House on June 10 from 10 AM to 2 PM. But we have an even greater hope which is revealed by God's Plan. The begetal and birthing process helps us understand God's great plan for mankind in bringing many sons and daughters to glory. We are being prepared for this great plan and this is our only and great hope. We are called and chosen to be trained now, as the firstfruits of the Spirit, to ultimately be the firstfruits in God's Kingdom at His coming.

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on May 14th 2023 It's long been known, at least in archive television circles anyway, that the charismatic Canadian television pioneering producer SYDNEY CECIL NEWMAN was enticed into working for ABC television in Britain in the late 1950s, and was responsible for such high profile dramas such as ARMCHAIR THRILLER, as well as creating the sixties phenomenon known as THE AVENGERS, before his successes led to him joining the BBC in 1962, which eventually led to the creation of the long-running, and much loved, TV cornerstone that is DOCTOR WHO, although that's a long and oft-told story which we aren't going to go into today. However, before deciding to bring teatime science fiction stories to children on the BBC, SYDNEY NEWMAN did actually have a bit of a track record of trying some quite similar ideas over at ABC, at least when it came to bringing Science-Fiction stories to children. In April 1960 he was the Producer on TARGET LUNA, a six-part science fiction adventure serial now sadly lost to time and, perhaps, videotape wiping policies, which involved those exciting possibilities offered up by the dawn of the space age in which children and hamsters could occasionally replace trained astronauts when British Rocket Groups were trying to send rockets to the moon. The success of this serial led to the swift commissioning of three further serials which we now refer to as the PATHFINDERS IN SPACE trilogy to differentiate it from the later 1972 series about World War Two bombers. PATHFINDERS IN SPACE, a six-part serial, largely recast and now including the chiseled good looks of GERALD FLOOD as Journalist CONWAY HENDERSON, was broadcast in September of that same year, with PATHFINDERS TO MARS following in December, and PATHFINDERS TO VENUS following in MARCH 1961, and proved to SYDNEY NEWMAN at least that Science-Fiction as an exciting storytelling device for family audiences was, on the whole, a pretty neat idea. TV Historian MICHAEL HERBERT, who recently shared his insights into the life of MALCOLM HULKE on the show, got in touch with VISION ON SOUND and asked if I might like to discuss these series, along with a later set of adventure serials also featuring GERALD FLOOD CITY and SECRET BENEATH THE SEA, on the show, and, of course I was not going to say no to an offer like that now, was I? First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on May 7th 2023 One of the things that bothers me about modern television is the way I feel it is often directed, written, and designed to deliberately manipulate the viewer into feeling a particular almost designated set of emotions, as if we can no longer be trusted to respond in the right way, and so our sympathies and reactions are manipulated to feel sympathy where the creators decide we ought to, instead of just telling a story and leaving the rest of us to decide whether or not, and how, to feel about the story unfolding in front of us. What kind of a monster are you if you don't feel THIS… or THIS…! or THIS!!! even when it is often the same old tropes and clichés that are being churned out, in often very predictable ways, but with the addition of a suitably mournful tune underscoring them to make sure that you all get the point. And if a large enough chunk of the audience put down their boxes of tissues for long enough to head off and tell everyone in their social media circle just how emotionally draining they found the latest episode of today's trendiest family drama, and announce to anyone who follows them that it is the best television programme ever, BAFTA awards and future series are almost certain to follow.  Whilst cynical old heads sitting in the corner might be fully aware that, however original this latest series might claim to be, they've seen it all before, and often done far better, and without any of that sort of nonsense, this is often not a popular position to take when the tabloids are turning yet another mundane, predictable drama series into a “must-see” unmissable phenomenon. And whilst Archive TV is sometimes denigrated for being far too linear, or far too predicable in the way it portrayed emotional responses, if it chose to show any at all, some of the smartest, classiest, and most harrowing dramas and sitcoms of yesteryear managed to create many memorable gut-punch moments mostly without needing to fall back on such heightened fast-cutting, enhanced melodramatic techniques.  Anyway, with television's handling of emotions in mind, WARREN CUMMINGS is back this week to discuss such matters, whether it's a touch of DOCTOR WHO, CALLAN, M*A*S*H, or ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE, and I do hope that we can all stagger through the hour without finding it all rather too exhausting. Ladies first? Not in Japan.  This week we take a look at a couple of the rather usual customs that exist in Japan.  Many of them will come to surprise you, especially if you have never been to Japan before. The match this week features, in Tariq's opinion, of the the greatest spots ever pulled off in a comedy wrestling match.  Without giving away the spot, one of the combatants in this match sucks his own thumb in order to get out of a compromising position.  That spot has to be seen to be believed! If you haven't seen this match search for it online, it is available everywhere and is definitely worth your time. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sixmantagpodcast/support

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on May 29th 2022 One of the many series that PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI is an enthusiastic fan of is the HOME BOX OFFICE series SEX AND THE CITY, which ran for six seasons, which started in the last couple of years of the last century, and continued through into the first few years of the twenty first, and has since been revived for two feature films, and has now resurfaced in the spin-off series AND JUST LIKE THAT which, he assures me, does not involve any magic tricks or fez wearing that he's aware of. SEX AND THE CITY told the stories of the friendship between four smart and dynamic women living in New York City around the time of the millennium, who seem to have no secrets from each other, and share frank details of every matter in their personal lives, whilst living at the more successful, fashionable, and privileged end of life in the city that never sleeps. The series was based upon the newspaper column in THE NEW YORK OBSERVER and subsequent book written by CANDACE BUSHNELL, and consisted of ninety-four episodes broadcast over six seasons from June 1998 through to February 2004. It features SARAH JESSICA PARKER as CARRIE BRADSHAW, whose newspaper column gives the series its title and much of its subject matter. Her three friends, who have varying degrees of success in their personal lives, are CHARLOTTE YORK (played by KRISTIN DAVIS), who works in an Art Gallery, SAMANTHA JONES (played by KIM CATTRALL), an independent business woman who had a career in PR, and MIRANDA HOBBES (played by CYNTHIA NIXON), who is a very successful lawyer. SEX AND THE CITY is a series that is hugely popular with its fans all around the world, but, despite having a few vague memories of dipping in and having a peek at a couple of episodes when it first appeared on terrestrial television in the UK, it was never a series that I was particularly drawn towards, so PAUL is here to persuade me, as my guests often are these days, how wrong I was to ignore it, and to tell me why it's one of his favourites and why I ought to perhaps give it another try. By Dan Taylor in Lubbock, TX - May 7, 2022 - Too often, we put off confronting our problems in life. We wait for that appropriate time. We hope it will come around. But it never seems to do so. Instead, our problems grow bigger, and we feel less capable than ever to conquer them. There is a story in the Bible that is the quintessential blueprint for dealing with the problems we face; one we can learn a lot from. What can we learn from David as he faced down Goliath?

Luckily for me, and the show, and hopefully all of you out there, I can usually rely on one or two of our regular visitors to step up at short notice and find something television-related for us to talk about, so that we don't have to vanish into any dark dimensions ourselves for a couple of weeks. So, I am more than pleased this week to welcome back PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI, who is a big fan of the anthology mystery and terror television series, of which there have been several over the years, including ORSON WELLES' GREAT MYSTERIES, THRILLER, CHILLER, TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED, TWILIGHT ZONE, and many more. PAUL joined me for a very off-the-cuff chat about two of his favourites as we grabbed hold of a giant iron knocker, and rapped timorously on the imposing, and frankly terrifying, doors of two of the great HAMMER HOUSES of television. THE HAMMER HOUSE OF HORROR presented ITV viewers with thirteen fifty-minute tales of terror in late 1980, and, about four years later, THE HAMMER HOUSE OF MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE was released, and gave us another thirteen disturbing and edgy tales to ponder upon, this time lasting seventy minutes a week. Traditional heavy-hitters may not be used as they cause strife. The usual suspects are available. Paul, Lisa, Andrew, Ben, Toby, Andy, Warren, Sandy, and Martin. Warren and Martin have been assigned." WARREN CUMMINGS is back and very kindly ventures into his personal nightmares to help me to talk about the television series SAPPHIRE AND STEEL, which starred DAVID McCALLUM and JOANNA LUMLEY across six multi-part stories, serials, adventures or assignments, the thirty-four episodes of which were broadcast between 1979 and 1982. Those six supernatural stories of hauntings and time interventions were filled with the sort of mind-invading early-evening terrors that managed to shape a generation, and created just the kind of unforgettable, haunting imagery that still gets talked about forty years later by those who saw it, and still grips viewers who are still discovering this remarkable series even today. WARREN particularly still has "issues" with the second story (the one set in a railway station, also featuring GERALD JAMES as George Tully), which is, rather naturally, the story both of us chose to watch in preparation for this show, and which gets the bulk of our attention. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on April 24th 2022 This week's show started off, appropriately enough, as something of a mystery, as I wasn't quite sure when we started off what SANDY McGREGOR was going to take as our topic for our latest television-themed prompt, so it was quite pleasant to find out that he really wanted to investigate the tropes, clichés, and golden rules that are used in the course of the average television crime drama, and, whilst I know crime drama is a subject we keep on returning to here on VISION ON SOUND, it's always a joy to take a look at another point of view on it, especially when so much of the history of TV drama has been spent looking for clues about, and the reasoning behind some of the worst aspects of what humans can do. It made for a jolly hour that, quite frankly, whizzes by quite joyously, so just think of this as the pilot for that hard-hitting, up-to-the-minute, classic, yet modern, atmospheric, thoughtful, action-packed, mindless, cerebral, yet devil-may-care investigative series involving McGREGOR AND HOLMES INVESTIGATIONS as we stumble down into various dark cellars, fail to switch on any lights, forget to call for backup, and generally remain baffled, hand over our guns and badges, until the penny finally drops and we unmask the villain that was the name at the top of this week's guest star list, all courtesy of our FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL Time Transporter and its distinctive custom paint job, if you'll give us just twenty-four hours, or even just the one, captain, and we'll have this whole thing wrapped up. Good stuff, by the way, and well worth seeking out. Not being one to let a good idea go uncopied, I got in touch with PAUL and wondered if he might like to try and do a bit of deconstruction on some other TV shows as well, which is basically how we ended up having an episode-long chat about the PILOT episode of the American political drama, THE WEST WING, which I think made for quite an entertaining hour of radio, which I hope you'll enjoy. After I share my own memories of growing up watching children's TV programmes far longer than might have seemed appropriate for a gentleman of my advancing years, (and obliquely musing upon the cult of BLUE PETER), SANDY and I spend the rest of the episode nattering about his memories of watching CRACKERJACK (CRACKERJACK!) with far, far too many interruptions of a very predictable nature*. But I like to think that, despite this, it is a warm and affectionate look at a fondly remembered television perennial, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as we did. * Although the playback shows that I did miss at least one, which is fun to listen out for. Most of us picture a small gathering of disciples in a small house, then that group suddenly emerges on the scene as Peter preaches a powerful sermon and 3,000 people are baptized. Sometimes we wonder why that doesn't happen today. One thing that helps in understanding any event, is its context. In history, we call that the Zeitgeist or spirit of the times. So today, we are going to explore the historic and social context of that dramatic event in Jerusalem in 31AD.

If there is a change, it seems like things only get worse. Sometimes we have to cling for dear life to the very hopeful promises from God we find in Philippians 1: "6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ". The inspiration to start LimeLoop was rooted in a drive to eliminate the boxes piling up at our and our neighbor's front doors. Learn about sustainable packaging and what the future might hold for the products we ship. Sponsored by: Impressions Expo. Use the Promo Code RegularGuysIE for a FREE Expo Pass!
