Ever since Seo Taiji and Boys broke onto the scene in their baggy overalls back in 1992, Korea has been working to cast as wide a cultural net as possible on the world stage. And, by placing young talent through rigorous game show incubators and pumping out dozens of attractive, talented, and universally appealing musical artists, they succeeded. With the meteoric rise of groups like BTS and Blackpink, K-Pop now had a hoard of die-hard fans in the West - a cross-cultural exchange to challenge Beatlemania. In this bonus episode, Hannah and Maia talk about K-Pop stans, who have become some of the loudest voices on the internet, and often use those voices for good. But when the conservative K-Pop industry subjects its artists to unprecedented levels of public scrutiny and input, and leaves them at the whims of a rabid global audience, can it spawn a new, dangerous form of parasocialism that we may never come back from? Tangents include an incredibly sophisticated T-Pain impression, and the tragically overlooked Lonely Island cinematic masterpiece, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. FULL episode can be found on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/c/rehashpodcast

Heute wird gelacht. Über Altes und Neues. Über 22 JUMP STREET, WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, DAS IST DAS ENDE oder ONE CUT OF THE DEAD. Und DAS LEBEN DES BRIAN, ACE VENTURA, BRAUTALARM oder SHAUN OF THE DEAD. Oder anhand von BARB AND STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR und POPSTAR - NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING. And don't forget to smile. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week we're covering the documentary of the great Connor 4 Real! If you haven't heard of him, where have you been?? - but also completely understandable since he's not real. This flick takes a similar path as Walk the Line, following the life of a fictional musician, but in more of a documentary style. It's crude, it's absurd, it's funny - but is it a good movie? Has Wally grown up too much to like stupid humor? Find out with us! Another Nanorama (episodes slightly shorter, but focusing on interesting titbits of information) on the history and legacy of The Lonely Island's debut and sophomoric cinematic comedies: Hot Rod and Popstar: Never Stop Never StoppingHot Rod was written originally for Will Ferrell before it ended up in development hell. The Lonely Island, then brand new on Saturday Night Live, were utilising the internet for comedy sketches way before it was cool, and SNL producer Lorne Michaels knew the trio would be perfect for Paramount's Hot Rod script. While Hot Rod wouldn't set the box office alight, it would become a huge hit on DVD, and a cult favourite, propelling The Lonely Island to the big leagues.Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, unlike Hot Rod, was created, written, directed by and starring The Lonely Island, and drew inevitable comparisons with the king of the music mockumentary This is Spinal Tap. Chronicling the meteoric rise of Conner4Real, former lead singer of The Style Boyz, his fall from grace and ultimate redemption, it's a lovingly scathing parody of the music industry and like Hot Rod, struggled at the box office before finding an audience. It's a good job Conner is so humble... Time for the catchphrase verse! I would love to hear your thoughts on Hot Rod & Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping !CONTACT.... We spent a lot of time talking on the last episode about documentaries, and you should definitely go check that out if you missed it, especially to catch the interview with Good Night Oppy director Ryan White. For the bonus episode we're sticking to the theme and jumping two years back in time, back when the show had a top-five format and went by a different name, to revisit our episode that was all about mockumentaries. Akiva Schaffer prefers to stay behind the scenes. But that doesn't mean he's any less funny than his Lonely Island bandmates Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone. The three middle school best friends started shooting videos right out of college before landing a plush gig making digital shorts for ‘Saturday Night Live,' including hits like “Lazy Sunday,” “Dick in a Box,” “Jizz in My Pants” and many others. In this episode, Schaffer talks about their unusual path to SNL and how directing outrageous movies like ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping' led him to take on a meta ‘Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers' reboot for Disney+ starring Samberg and John Mulaney. He also explains why he might be single handedly responsible for Netflix deciding to pull the trigger on ‘I Think You Should Leave' with Tim Robinson.
