I suggested that we would have trouble with FTX and funding around 4 months ago. SBF has been giving lots of money to EA. He admits it's a massively speculative bubble. Crypto crash hurts the most vulnerable, because poor uneducated people put lots of money into it (Krugman). Crypto is currently small, but should be regulated and has potential contagion effects (BIS). EA as a whole is getting loose with it's money due to large crypto flows (MacAskill). An inevitable crypto crash leads to either a) bad optics leading to less interest in EA or b) lots of dead projects. It was quite obvious that this would happen--although the specific details with Alameda were not obvious. Stuart Buck and Blonergan (and a few others) were the only one who took me seriously at the time. Below are some suggestions for change. 1. The new button of "support" is great, but I think EA forum should have a way to sort by controversiality. And, have the EA forum algorithm occasionally (some ϵ% of the time), punt controversial posts back upwards to the front page. If you're like me, you read the forum sorted by Magic (New and Upvoted). But this promotes herd mentality. The red-teaming and self-criticism is excellent, but if the only way we aggregate how "good" is is by up-votes, that is flawed. Perhaps the best way to know that criticism has touched a nerve is to compute a fraction: how many members of the community disagree vs how many agree. (or, even better, if you are in an organization, use a weighted fraction, where you put lower weight on the people in the organization that are in positions of power (obviously difficult to implement in practice)) 2. More of you should consider anonymous posts. This is EA forum. I cannot believe that some of you delete your posts simply because it ends up being downvoted. Especially if you're working higher up in an EA org, you ought to be actively voicing your dissent and helping to monitor EA. For example, this is not good: "Members of the mutinous cohort told me that the movement's leaders were not to be taken at their word—that they would say anything in public to maximize impact. Some of the paranoia—rumor-mill references to secret Google docs and ruthless clandestine councils—seemed overstated, but there was a core cadre that exercised control over public messaging; its members debated, for example, how to formulate their position that climate change was probably not as important as runaway A.I. without sounding like denialists or jerks." (New Yorker) What makes EA, EA, what makes EA antifragile, is its ruthless transparency. If we are self-censoring because we have already concluded something is super effective, then there is no point in EA. Go do your own thing with your own money. Become Bill Gates. But don't associate with EA. 3. Finances should be partially anonymized. If an EA org receives some money above a certain threshold from an individual contribution, we should be transparent in saying that we will reject said money if it is not donated anonymously. You may protest that this would decrease the number of donations by rich billionaires. But take it this way: if they donate to EA, it's because they believe that EA can spend it better. Thus, they should be willing to donate anonymously, to not affect how EA spends money. If they don't donate to EA, then they can establish a different philanthropic organization and hire EA-adjacent staff, making for more competition. The Most UPVOTED Reddit Revenge Stories (2 Hour Compilation)

This is: Sort forum posts by: Occlumency (Old & Upvoted), published by Emrik on May 15, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. 32/50 of the highest upvoted posts on the forum are less than a year old. The top 3 posts are within a month old. Forum activity seems to have grown a lot lately, and there could be reasons to expect it to climb even higher. Make no mistake, this could be really good news! Maybe more people have become interested in figuring out how to do good. I'm going to add it to my bag of reasons to be optimistic about the future. But it does mean we should reflect on what it could mean for us and how we should adapt to it. 1) It means that posts from this year are much more likely to have more upvotes compared to older posts of similar quality. 2) It also means that older posts are more valuable to promote on the forum, because we have more fresh eyes here who haven't already read them. 3) And finally it means that it's slightly harder to find some of the historically best posts on the forum, since sorting by total upvotes will heavily bias it towards this year. For these reasons, maybe someone should introduce another sorting category where instead of sorting by Magic (New & Upvoted), we can have a Occlumency (Old & Upvoted). Weight votes by monthly forum activity to approximate conversion rate of readers->votes Idk if the data's available, but if you can break down a post's votes by month and you have data on how many users voted on anything that month, you can weight votes based on total voters going around that month. If two posts have the same number of readers, but the latter post has double the upvotes, that is some evidence that speaks to how likely it is to be usefwl to you. Let's call the efficiency with which a post converts readers to voters its conversion rate. Unfortunately, you can't directly weight a post's vote count by the reader count since people can game that. So you want to weight by a hard-to-game proxy for how many potential voters read it. This could be the number of votes going around, or the number of voters going around, I don't have strong arguments either way. It doesn't need to be super precise. Some bias in favour of more recent posts could be good if information and wisdom has increased over time. But if voter demographics has proportionately shifted towards people who haven't spent as much time thinking about the many nuances of having positive impact, some bias towards older votes could be good. I'd be wary of relying on weak heuristics like these when you have some control over people's information diets, though, so I would just recommend straight-up weighting by monthly vote counts. This is the central point of this post, and the rest of it is more speculative and less actionable. So you don't need to read the rest of it in order to upvote this post, hehe. Information cascades The expected number of marginal votes a post will get within a slice of time depends on A) the expected number of potential voters reading it, and B) the expected number of votes they will give it given that they read it. But A further depends on the vote balance it already has, since upvoted posts are more visible. And B also depends on vote balance because 1) voter-brains may partially infer quality from popularity and may insufficiently adjust downwards, and 2) we read things largely because we want to stay "in the loop" and we use vote balance to infer what the loop actually is. This situation has all the prerequisites for rampant information cascades that depend on slight variations in initial conditions. An information cascade occurs when people signal that they have information about something, but actually based their judgment on other people's signals, resulting in a self-reinforcing community opinion that does not necessarily reflect reality. If you try to compete with this kind of job, you might be ok, but you better be on your game and ready to compete. There are a lot of Asians coming in and are very competitive in this scenario. Over the next several decades it is estimated there will be a lot more Asians (more than any other demographic increase) and any professional/office job that looks attractive to you is probably going to look attractive to the 2 billion Asians in India/China/wherever that would like to come to the US. This might sound anti Asian or whatever, I'm just going by the facts and using common sense here.On top of the increased Asian immigration over the coming decades, technology will make it easier all the time to outsource white collar work. If you can have someone work on a computer, why not have someone in India do it from their computer? Why not have your engineering team in Japan engineer it? It's only been recently that the internet has been fast enough to offer telecommuting so we'll see where this ends up when we have things like virtual reality enabling even more global interconnectedness over the coming decades.The next thing to note is that we've had many technological revolutions in the last 100 years and most of them have begun in the US. The first telephone, alternating current leading to the electrification of the home, toilets, flight at Kittyhawk, Henry Ford's assembly line and the ubiquitization of automobiles, the television, the interstate road system, personal computers, cell phones, the internet, etc. In fact there have been many innovations that improved productivity that people don't even recognize for being as impactful as they are. Ok but what's the next big thing? I have a theory that we're pretty much out of low hanging fruit to create wealth. Will there be innovations that make people rich? Sure. But as far as innovations that make EVERYBODY richer? It's not clear what that'll be, or when. Apple seems to not have any more “one more things “as Steve Jobs would say. Maybe some super improvement in battery technology or fusion that enables a green revolution but I'll believe it when I see it. 3D printing? Useful but it hasn't seemed to live up to the hype so far. Moore's Law is ending soon or already over depending on who you ask.So how do you take advantage of this? Well I would steer clear of white collar jobs that are easily offshoreable, stay clear of jobs that require a lot of money to get into and might not be around in 5 or 10 years.In the last couple of months I've paid $1,200 to fix something on my roof, $3000 to do some electrical wiring and piping in my kitchen, $550 to yank out old cabinets, $2,000 to lay down some tile. Some of these people are just doing it as a side job under the table tax free. They didn't have to go to school or go into a lot of debt to learn to do these trades and they're making good money. There's no way to offshore these jobs and the more white collar people there are that don't know how to do these themselves, the more they'll be worth. If you ever want to get out of it, you can hire people to work for you and run a business doing it.

As far as I could tell, this isn't title inflation [1], but descriptively accurate. That is, engineers at Netflix are usually at skill levels comparable to Senior Software Engineers at other top tier tech companies.At that level, the difference in pay is much less than a factor of 2. Netflix allegedly pays ~400K for senior software engineers. Keep in mind that Netflix has relatively few benefits, and basically no monetary compensation other than base salary. I can't find reliable and public total compensation numbers for Senior Software Engineers at Google/Facebook, but rest assured that it's considerably higher than 200K. Still on average less than 400K, probably.As for why Netflix probably pays more, here are the possible reasons:Because they can. My impression is that just as ads at Facebook/Google makes money fall from the sky, Netflix subscriptions basically print money, aka it's a highly scalable way to make lots of money with high gross margins. Unlike Facebook or especially Google however, which hires a lot of people on ancillary projects in the hopes of funding the next moonshot, Netflix seems laser-focused on their core product. So they both make a lot of money and don't need to hire a lot of people. If tech is the center of your business and you're only planning to hire a few engineers, why not pay a lot to hire the best?Work at Netflix is more stressful. I don't know how true this is, but the reputation in the Valley is definitely that Netflix is much more stressful than Facebook which is more stressful than Google.Netflix has a reputation of firing people early and often. Sid Reddy's answer to Does the Netflix work culture create a culture of fear amongst its employees?If this is true (and arguably even if it isn't, as long as enough people believe it), then Netflix has to pay more to compensate.(more speculative) Poorer hiring/training pipeline. Google, Facebook, and basically every other large tech company hire generally smart people and then train them at every stage in their careers, usually from college internships onwards. The career trajectory is usually something like college intern -> junior engineer/graduate intern -> mid-level engineer -> senior engineer -> staff+ (most people never reach this level). This process engenders a surprising amount of both name recognition and company loyalty for engineers. Netflix tries to skip past all of that, and only start hiring at the senior engineer level [2]. If they only poach senior people from other companies and don't have a native hiring bench, is it any surprise that they have to pay more to compensate?[1] Unlike at, say, LinkedIn.[2] If you look for “internship jobs” at Work at Netflix, there's only a single hiring team, and they only look for graduate students with very specific academic experience.

Okay, let's be frank…you made up a great excuse for missing the test, but you're still going to fail for not having prepared. The “extra” week or even two only delays the inevitable, and now you're even more behind because the class still progressed after the test date.Even though you never miss class and are soothed to believe “I attended class therefore I'll be ok” is incredibly misleading: your sitting in class playing on your phone, watching videos on your laptop or just doing nothing equates with being absent. Seriously, students— either participate and engage or save yourself the time and expense of a class.That study guide or practice test that you adore and ask for every class and every test—is useless if you don't understand the material. Really. I kid you not - but neither a study guide nor a practice test will ever replace the engaged hours required in class in addition to the work that's assigned outside of class to practice and master the skill taught to successfully pass the test.Oh there's more (like, really, we can tell even without seeing you cheat during the exam when we grade it that you actually cheated…it's not rocket science)…suffice it to say:Students, please (1) show up-always, (2) be ready to learn and (3) do what's asked of you.
