Jeff Warshaw doesn't plan to participate in radio's "race to the bottom." The CEO of Connoisseur Media just bought Alpha Media, expanding Connoisseur from 11 stations to 218. It's a move that bucks the industry trend to lay off people and cut budgets -- particularly because of what Warshaw says about his plans to hire and invest even more. In an interview, Jeff responds to Gordon's question, "Did you miss the news that radio is dying?"Stay in the loop with all things Borrell when you join our Research Alert Lists. Rival radio networks are transplanting big talent from Sydney and trying to make it work in Melbourne. SCA Chief Content Officer, Dave Cameron, is taking the opposite strategy. Local talent that “speaks the language of the city” and gets the “fabric” of its suburbs is particularly crucial for breakfast audiences, he says. Plus, as platforms and content globalise, localism becomes a competitive advantage: “Anti-globalism will pay dividends for us … otherwise we’re playing the same game as everyone else.” Hence SCA launching six new shows, pairing fresh local talent with station “juggernauts” while focusing harder on radio’s core heartlands – like Western Sydney, where massive audiences and engagement are found. “That is where the bulk of radio listening, the bulk of audience data and surveys, is happening,” per Cameron. “It's not happening in Bondi.” SCA is laser-focused on growing audiences and revenues without blowing holes in the budget that could later prove problematic. Content economics are underpinned by sharpened appetite for advertiser integration – with those commercial discussions happening upfront and early. “We’ve never been more commercially savvy around that,” says Cameron. Seeking new audiences via greener talent and formats could risk dislocating “rusted-on” loyalists, Cameron acknowledges. “But we believe in the combinations we’ve put together,” he says. “If you're not investing in fresh thinking, talent and voices, your industry may become irrelevant.” Plus, there’s growing evidence to suggest a younger set is discovering the analogue dial – either through nostalgia, or as a reaction to algorithmic overreach. The next year will test SCA’s strategy, but Cameron’s confident audiences will hold and then grow. The alternative is to keep hoping the world doesn’t change, or emulate the metro lift and shift being attempted by rivals. Can that transplant strategy pay off, given time to bed-in? “That’s a $200 million question,” says Cameron. SCA is staking out a different numbers game.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

David Lloyd is a veteran of the local radio industry, with over 40 years of experience in roles at LBC, Virgin Radio, and the BBC. He also brings regulatory expertise from his time at the UK Radio Authority, now part of Ofcom. Today, he's a broadcaster and co-founder of Boom Radio, a relatively new UK station catering to baby boomers. In this episode, we discuss the state of BBC local radio, including the details of Lloyd's complaint about BBC Radio Devon's failure to adequately cover the 2024 riots. We also explore the potential role of alternative providers and the impact of the BBC's proposed spin-off service on Lloyd's own station, Boom Radio.“I think the BBC can do a lot better on the resources available, even as reduced. They've still got £120 million now furnishing a lot of very part-time radio stations—that's a lot of money. In other hands, that could actually deliver some incredible local radio, which, yes, is the BBC the right person to be running local radio if it really takes them that much money to deliver it poorly?”Listen to all our episodes here: https://podfollow.com/beebwatch/view To support our journalism and receive a weekly blog sign up now for £1.99 per month (NB we only charge for one creation per month): www.patreon.com/BeebWatch/membership Or if you'd rather make a one-off payment (which doesn't entitle you to the blog) please use our crowdfunding page:https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/roger-boltons-beeb-watch-podcast @BeebRogerInstagram: rogerboltonsbeebwatchLinkedIn: Roger Bolton's Beeb Watchemail: roger@rogerboltonsbeebwatch.comwww.goodeggproductions.uk Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Jimmy Ahmuhdoofus and I have been able to share with you interviews with people that have interesting hobbies or vocations, people who I usually don't know that well, but this episode is a treat for me as I get to chat with a life long friend, Brian Zschiesche. He's a good enough friend that not only do I know his middle name but also how to spell that wacky last name. Prior to his current interesting job at the Sterling hospital, he spent over three decades behind the mic at various radio stations, including 20 years at WSDR, where many of my Prophetstown listeners enjoyed his on-air antics. He'll reminisce about DJs that influenced him, about the demise of radio as we once knew it, and how he disappointed women.

It comes as Minister Martin is due to announce a funding model for broadcast media after scandals in the nation's State Broadcaster RTÉ Its claimed local radio plays a vital role in Irish life and that the government should prevent what has been seen in the US and UK media markets where many local radio stations have shut down. Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, says the importance of local radio stations was seen through the coverage of the recent local and European elections.

This week's news that Moberly's KWIX-KRES Radio had let their entire on-air staff go has generated news stories this week from all three mid-Missouri television stations. Zimmer Communications president John Zimmer joined is live this morning on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" to discuss the importance of local radio. Mr. Zimmer tells listeners that his heart goes out to everyone impacted by this development in Moberly and other towns like Farmington and Festus as well. Mr. Zimmer says this will hurt the community. He notes that Zimmer has modeled a lot of its emphasis on news, sports and severe weather based on what the late Jerrell Shepherd did in Moberly and elsewhere. Mr. Zimmer also talked about his late father, Jerome Zimmer and the stations he started in southeast Missouri's Dexter. Mr. Zimmer says his father taught him the importance of serving the local community and local advertisers, and that he thinks of his father daily. Mr. Zimmer also discussed a bipartisan bill in Congress aimed at protecting AM radio in cars. He supports that bill and says it's about safety for all Americans:
Zimmer Communications' President, John Zimmer, highlights the massive impact that local radio has on local communities, as well as what's being done on the national level for the broadcast industry. Stephanie fills us in on "Pizza Gate."
It's been 18 months since the BBC first announced sweeping changes to Local Radio in England. Now, most of the 39 stations share regional output on weekdays from 2pm and then national programming after 6pm. The decision immediately led to howls of protest from staff, politicians and Feedback listeners. This week, Andrea has been speaking to the person behind these changes, the Head of Audio and Digital for BBC England, Chris Burns. Last week Radio 3 Controller, Sam Jackson, explained the rationale behind his recent changes to the station's schedule. But not all of you were convinced by his reasoning so, this week, Andrea is addressing some more of your comments. And the comedian Michael Spicer joins Andrea to talk about his new series No Room on Radio 4 and BBC Sounds. The pair delve into the art of satire and why low hanging fruit can still be funny... Presented by Andrea Catherwood Produced by Leeanne Coyle A Whistledown Scotland production for BBC Radio 4
