The biggest contract in the history of sport has just been signed. It's a 15-year deal worth $765m for 26-year-old Major League Baseball player Juan Soto to join the New York Mets. Is Soto worth the jaw dropping contract? How did a deal that big come together? And are European clubs like Chelsea headed in the same direction? We pick the brains of U.S. Sports Business Reporter, Daniel Kaplan, formerly of The Sports Business Journal and The Athletic. After Gabby went to Germany to see Aston Villa's Champions League win over RB Leipzig, we wax lyrical about Jhon Duran and their throwback style. And as Saudi Arabia is confirmed as the host of the 2034 FIFA World Cup, Mark asks what this means for the future of global sporting events. Plus, is this teenager the new Usain Bolt? We try very hard not to big up Australian 16-year-old sensation Gout Gout too much. Like the look of Gabby's Sports Agents mug? On September 26, 2020, then-President Donald Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the United States Supreme Court. Upon confirmation, Justice Barrett took the seat of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who had passed away one week before Justice Barrett's nomination. Writing in the Fall 2023 issue of the Criminal Justice Magazine, Daniel Kaplan observes that Justice Barrett's voting pattern in the court's criminal cases has been notably Scalia-esque. That's perhaps not surprising, given that Justice Barrett was a law clerk for Justice Scalia after her graduation from Notre Dame Law School. She remains the only former Scalia clerk among the 9 justices currently on the court. Daniel Kaplan is an Assistant Federal Public Defender in Phoenix, Arizona. His article is "Amy Coney Barrett: A Mellower Scalia". You can read his article here
Join hosts Christine Daigle, Jena Brown and Kevin Tumlinson as they discuss the week's entertainment news, including AI that will create audiobooks for foreign titles, Don Winslow's retirement, and how "no one buys books." Then, stick around for a chat with AutoCrit's Daniel Kaplan! AutoCrit began humbly as the brainchild of an unpublished writer with dreams of becoming an author. She faced a common problem: how could she get expert, unbiased feedback on her writing without breaking the bank? Writers' groups, critique partners, and other beta readers weren't at the expert level, and friends and family weren't unbiased. Getting feedback took time, and the quality of the feedback was hit-or-miss. Hiring a professional editor was an expensive investment, especially for early, unpolished drafts. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/writersink/support
