In celebration of the first birthday of Into the Absurd, we dined virtually with artistic partners in life and theatrics, Sonja and David Robson. We talked about their first meeting in 1990 at an audition, their favorite theatrical project, Sonja's photography passion turned business, and David's memorable play critique from a star-studded playwriting panel in Alaska. David Robson is an award-winning playwright whose work for the stage has been hailed as "compelling", "forceful", and "gut-wrenching" by the New York Times, and "an important contribution to contemporary theater" by the Philadelphia Inquirer. His plays include BY THE EYE; WITHOUT CONSENT; BIRTHRIGHT (PlayPenn semi-finalist); CLAY WARRIOR; MULEHEADED; AFTER BIRTH OF A NATION (Best Delaware Playwright Award); PRICELESS; PLAYING THE ASSASSIN (Philadelphia Critics' Best Play Nomination); PLAYING LENI (co-written with John Stanton); A FEW SMALL REPAIRS; MAN MEASURES MAN (Barrymore Award nomination); and AFTER DENMARK. Work has been produced by TheaterWorks Hartford, Delaware Theatre Company, Penguin Rep, InterAct Theatre Company, Passage Theatre, and Act II Playhouse, among others. Robson was recently named Delaware's Best Playwright by Broadway World, and is recipient of the Hotel Obligado Audience Choice Award for New Work. Other honors include the Susan McIntyre Playwriting Award, the Panowski Playwriting Award (runner-up), and two playwriting fellowships and two grants from the Delaware Division of the Arts. Play development: Blank Theatre (Los Angeles), Bated Breath Theatre (Hartford, CT), Lark (NYC), White Pines Productions (Philadelphia, PA), City Theater Company (Wilmington, DE), Great Plains Theatre Conference (Omaha, NE), Last Frontier Theatre Conference (Valdez, AK), Rebel Theatre (NYC), and New Theatre (Coral Gables, FL). His plays and monologues are published by Smith and Kraus and Original Works Publishing. David is a member of the Dramatists' Guild, the Playwrights' Center, and is a former playwright in residence at the Lark Play Development Center in New York City. He is also the author of more than 20 books for young adults, including Shakespeare's Globe Theater, The Murder of Emmett Till, and The Black Arts Movement. He earned an MFA in creative writing from Goddard College, an MS in English Education from St. Joseph's University, and a BA in Communications from Temple University. He is a professor of English at Delaware County Community College, where he was awarded the Gould Award for Teaching Excellent in 2010.(https://www.davidrobsonplay.org/)Sonja Robson fell in love with photography as a teen when her big brother Millard guided her in purchasing the Minolta seen in this photo. She lived in Sweden most of her young life and moved to the States after graduating high school. She drifted a bit and later on received her BFA in Theatre at U of The Arts, however, she's always been more of a visual artist than a lover of fancy words. After many art classes (digital and otherwise) as well as photography classes, she inherited a collection of cameras and lenses from her photographer brother, Bill, and realized that she found her passion once again. She has an eye for detail and love to try to capture that intangible something that makes a person unique. Sonja was born in New York and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. She has been performing both on stage and film since 1990. She received her BFA in Acting from The University of The Arts. She has worked at many local theatres, including The Wilma, New City Stage, The Walnut and The Lantern. In 1998 she received a Supporting Actress Barrymore nomination for her role in The Lover/A Kind of Alaska at The Walnut, and she has also been seen in numerous local and national commercials. Sonja was last seen in The Bald Soprano at The Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium in February 2020. Other productions include Why Torture is Wrong and The People. who Love Them at New City Stage and Marriage, The Empire Builders, The Madwoman of Chaillot and The Castle with The IRC.(https://www.sonjaseye.com/)~~~~~~~To explore past episodes of Into the Absurd, visit our Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/pg/IdiopathicRidiculopathyConsortium/videos/ORThe IRC's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj9sR3Pi7_igB845rllrtsLhtqYnuwDRvAnd while you're there, be sure to SUBSCRIBE, so you don't miss any future episodes.

The key word in Victoria’s voluntary assisted dying law is the first one: ‘voluntary’. By law, any doctor, nurse, or other health professional who conscientiously objects can choose not to participate in a person’s request for voluntary assisted dying. But how does an institution balance its employees legal right to conscientiously object with its obligation to care for its patients? Colin M, champion swimmer. “They were just playing in the waves. And he got dumped in one of those freak accidents and he knew straight away that he'd had a catastrophic injury.” -- Photo: Supplied In this episode, we meet Colin, a former champion swimmer and  professor of philosophy who is dying and who has applied for the legal right to end his own life. Colin lives by the ancient Roman philosophy of Stoicism. This is what the Stoic Marcus Aurelius had to say about death: ‘Accept death in a cheerful spirit, as nothing but the dissolution of the elements from which each living thing is composed’. For a Stoic, it is good to “choose to die well while you can”. Colin is living in a Catholic nursing home. They have a very different philosophy about death and dying. To a staunch Catholic, choosing to end your life early is to “to take the place of God in deciding the moment of death”. What happens when these two ancient philosophies meet in one Melbourne nursing home? And when does ‘conscientious objection’ become ‘conscientious obstruction’? Sister Debra, niece Gabrielle, and nephew Elliot with Colin. “One of the most honourable people I think I've ever met.”-- Photo: Supplied “I don't understand how people can think that that's a good or an ethical thing to do to someone, like physically and emotionally to put people through that suffering” Colin’s sister, Debra Stoic Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius: ““Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. There are many firsts in Betty King’s life. First female prosecutor for the state of Victoria. First female prosecutor for the Commonwealth of Australia. First female silk in Victoria. Now another – first Chair of Victoria’s Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board. Reporting to parliament, the Board oversees the processes of the law with its 68 safeguards, ensuring that doctors adhere to the rules, and that the people seeking assistance to die are competent and not being coerced. Of all the doubts raised by MPs in the parliamentary debate about assisted dying, none was more frequent than the fear that a vulnerable person may be coerced to their death by heartless relatives through the VAD law.  In this episode, we meet Betty – the “Guardian of the Safeguards’ – as well as doctors, palliative care physicians, pharmacists, VAD Care Navigators, and families of those who have been through the process to find out whether any of those fears have turned out to be true. And we discover there is another, unwritten safeguard:  To take this path, you have to have enormous courage. The Hon. Good morning to your first place Seattle Mariners, frustrating and fascinating in, well, not equal measure, but hefty sums. With Matthew traipsing along the coastline of the Pacific Ocean, John and Kate commandeer the helm and break down their pleasant surprises and early disappointments, digging beyond the still-stinging loss of James Paxton and looking at a few starters who had more encouraging outings on Thursday. We talk Taylor Trammell, both in context of the present and future, with an eye on the 'ol service time manipulation requirement counter for Mr. Jarred Kelenic, which has ticked down to zero and is now smoking and threatening to burst. Also highlighted: the bullpen! Is this just what it's going to be with John Stanton pulling out the empty pockets of his casual fit Fendi slacks and making a frowny face at M's fans? As exciting as this club has shown it has the capacity to be, their penny pinching has already cost them a few games and should likely have cost them more with a bullpen of question marks. We rapid-fire a few more questions and finish with a discussion of what other clubs and players have caught our eye league-wide, as well as our... excitement(?) at the Astros coming to town as a test for these M's. Today we’re speaking with the Running Room founder, John Stanton, who back in 1981 was an out-of-shape 2-pack-a-day smoker that could barely run from one lamppost to the next. His now popular run:walk approach got him pretty darn fit, to the point that his first 19 marathons were all under 3-hrs and he even made it to the World Ironman Championships in Kona, Hawaii. In 1984 he opened a tiny store in Edmonton to service the needs of local runners, which has grown to become the largest running retailer we all know and love with over 100 outlets and 1300 employees throughout North America. But he’s perhaps best known for being the mascot of the Running Room. If you’ve attended a major road race in Canada we’ll bet you’ve stood in a long lineup to get your selfie with this legend, and Carolyn even opens with a story of her various meetings with him over the years. Close to 1 million people have gotten their start in the sport at a Running Room clinic, and that doesn’t include the millions more who have independently followed the advice in his 10 best-selling books. John has received numerous awards for his contribution to the health and fitness of our nation, he serves as an Honorary Col to an army unit in Edmonton, he is an inductee to the Canadian Retail Hall of Fame, he is regularly featured on national news and radio shows, and if that weren’t enough...he is a member of the Order of Canada. John Stanton is powerful but also incredibly humble, and as you’ll see in this interview he genuinely loves the sport of running and possesses a remarkable ability to help others fall in love with it as well. We are so grateful to him for sharing this hour with us, and we hope his words will add an extra spring in your step today. He hasn't been the owner of the team all that long, so the jury is still out on him as an owner so far, but we're starting to get a better idea. How has John Stanton been as an owner so far?

A three-kilometre fun run with his sons in 1981 was the catalyst for the then-out-of-shape, overweight John Stanton to realize he had to change his lifestyle. A food industry executive who smoked two packs of cigarettes a day, he began running secretly before dawn because he felt self-conscious about having his neighbours see "this chubby little guy" who could only run from lamp post to lamp post before having to take a walk break. John went on to run over 60 marathons, hundreds of road races and numerous triathlons, including the Hawaiian World Championship Ironman competition. His pre-dawn runs would ultimately become John Stanton's 10:1 run/walk combination that has helped close to a million people do everything from learn to run to complete marathons, upright and smiling. John is regularly featured on CBC, CTV and Global Television, in the National Post and the Globe and Mail, as well as, numerous radio and television programs across Canada and the United States.
