What is going everyone! Welcome back to Sonoma Raceway at the Velocity Invitational for part 2 of our special. In this episode, you will hear from car content creator Kali Moldavon, YouTuber extraordinaire Jack Ultramotive, vintage car expert Gian Paolo Scorzo of Carissimo and one of the best photographers Arizona has to offer, Cody Nogowski. They all share their experiences of why to them, the Velocity Invitational is truly one of the top automotive events in the world. Which is not a stretch. It was Jack and Gian Paolo's first time here and Kali and Cody have been here a few times and it's awesome to hear what each of them love about it. This was recorded in the media center which was directly on the front straight at Sonoma which means some of the fly by's get really loud at times. Apologies about that but it also gives a unique feeling as to being boots on the ground. Please make sure you give a follow to Kali @kalimoldavon, Jack @jackultramotive, Gian Paolo @gocarissimo and @iamscorzo and Cody @c.j.n.photography as well as the velocity invitational IG account @velocityinvitational. Hello again fellow Racing Ears, I took a courage pill and spent 110 quidd for a ticket to the 2023 Velocity Invitational. Mr Producer and I had a ball seeing and hearing very famous and historic racing cars that were all staged in the one and only paddock area that is at Sonoma Raceway at Sears Point. As I described in this podcast episode, there was a flavor for every possible historic sports car racing enthusiast's appetite. 50's GT racers, Historic F1 racers, Really Historic / Modern F1 racers, Historic Group C and GTP racers, WRC Rally racers, Can Am Racers, Trans Am Racers, Historic Indy Car racers, IMSA GTX GTO GTU racers, ALMS / 24 Hours of Le Mans racers, and an Enduro that went from day into night both Saturday and Sunday that featured Mini's and Mustangs. I wish I could've seen the sprint car racing that was happening at the south turn 11 hairpin in the evening. I wasn't able to chat with as many people as I would've liked but I still chatted with a few folks and was also able to capture on track action from Turn 2 at Sonoma Raceway at Sears Point. I also currently have a few videos up at The Racing Ear on YouTube with a few more on the way up there. Thank you for listening to The Racing Ear PodcastGOD BLESS YOU!! Mason Bloom has experienced a lot as a young automotive enthusiast. His father owns a Porsche 911 and his father's friend owns an Aston Martin Vantage. Bloom drove the latter at age 12. Mason Bloom The Porsche and Aston Martin experiences solidified Bloom's passion for high-performance vehicles. It also ignited his interest in writing about his experiences and the always-compelling automobile industry. Bloom, 16, a sophomore at Aptos High School (located on the central coast of California), is our guest this week on The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I talk with the journalist about his automobile interests and those of his peers. We also talk with him about his writing talents. Bloom, recommended by Dave Kellogg (my long-time editor at The Monterey Herald), is now also a writer for TheWeeklyDriver.com. He has also contributed to The Herald and other automotive websites. Legendary Mario Andretti (front center) taken during the Velocity Invitational at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. © Mason Bloom/TheWeeklyDriver.com. "In 2012, I think it was, my dad bought a Porsche 911 and that just really changed my perspective," said Bloom, who has contributed four articles to TheWeeklyDriver.com. "You know, being able to ride in a small, fast sports car, that radiated the love of cars for me. He's owned the car for about 10 years now, but that's really the root of it." During Covid-19 pandemic, Bloom had the opportunity to drive his family friend's Aston Martin. Bloom was further enamored with cars. He took images and wrote his first full car review in 2020. "It was a typical Aston Martin; it was loud and it was fast," said Bloom of his Vantage experience. "It's not the most comfortable city car, contrary to popular belief. But the Mercedes V8 and the Aston Martin styling. It's a classic combination." We also talk with Bloom about the high school car club he has with several classmates, and the cars he's considering when the time is right for his first vehicle. Bloom began contributing to TheWeeklyDriver.com in mid-October after attending the Velocity Invitational at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca with his father. In August, an article and accompanying photography Bloom crafted about the famous Concours d'Elegance was featured on Page 1 of the Sunday edition of the Monterey Herald. This week, it's Brad and Matt holding it down while Aaron's away. Matt teases the upcoming Velocity Invitational weekend, the new Ford Super Duty, and they discuss all the recent street takeovers. Plus, why does California hate cars?
For most of us, viewing vintage race cars from manufacturers like Maserati, McLaren, and Ferrari (along with others) happens only online. We see them on automotive websites, in magazines and of course in the occasional YouTube video. But now, thanks to Jeff O'Neil, Founder of the Velocity Invitational at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca, everyone with a ticket and a love for automobiles, can view these cars up close and in person. But how does an event like this come together, and how on earth does one come to gather some of the rarest and most expensive vehicles in history in one place? On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ, Velocity Invitational founder Jeff O'Neil sits down with us to tell us how it's done!
Matt and Adam chat about old Ford Granada ads and the newest Ferrari SUV. Next, Ryan Turri joins the show to preview this year's Velocity Invitational race at Laguna Seca.

Velocity Invitational Founder Jeff O'Neill Wants To Build A Goodwood For The United States. O'Neill founded Velocity Invitational as an alternative to park-and-show gatherings on golf club fairways. An expanding slate of automotive events serves as outlets for today's growing enthusiast community, combining genuine fun with marketing opportunities for brands to increase public visibility. But many gatherings that end up in the “park and show” category tend to get old pretty quickly, leaving much of the real fun to collectors, owners, and fans willing to actually take their cars out for drives on public roads. And don't even ask about the aggressive “street takeover” phenomenon that focuses more on disruption than actual appreciation for real cars, new or old.
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca has a diverse annual motorsports calendar. It began this year in April with the Trans Am Superfest and continues through mid-October with the Velocity Invitational. Next month is the busiest time of the year with the iconic facility heavy into the mix of Monterey Auto Week. Barry Toepke, Director of Heritage Events & Public Relations at WeatherTech Raceway, is our guest this week on The Weekly Driver Podcast. A guest three times previously, Toepke shares with co-host Bruce Aldrich in Episode #233 the upcoming schedule, notably the Monterey Pre-Reunion (Aug. 13-14) and Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (Aug. 17-20). The annual Reunion, according to raceway officials, is a "museum revving to life with hundreds of historic and period-correct race and sports cars from nearly every era." WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is approaching its busiest of the season, Monterey Auto Week. Besides the usual collections of vintage racing, the venue this year is the official start of a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Barry Toepke, Director of Heritage Events & Public Relations at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Cultivated from private collections or museums and no longer driven in competition, more the 50 vehicles with pedigrees as overall winners or first in class at LeMans will be highlighted in a heritage legends building. The cars' histories will also be detailed in video, historic images and storyboards. The first Porsche (1970) and the last Ferrari (1965) to win the overall title will be included in the historic display. "It will arguably be the largest collection of authentic Le Mans-winning cars ever in one place in America," said Toepke. "We'll be the kickoff launch event for a year-long celebration. It's quite an honor and we don't take it lightly." Representatives of the race held yearly in June on the Circuit de la Sarthe have been invited to the festivities. Motorsports Reunion officials recently announced Tom Kristensen of Denmark, the record-holding, nine-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will serve as Grand Marshal and will autograph sessions. The previous week at WeatherTech Raceway more than 300 historic race cars, most competing days later in the Reunion, will get valuable track time in a more relaxed and less-crowded environment. The field is comprised of carefully selected entries by our selection committee. Bruce and James also discuss with Toepke the upcoming Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey (Sept. 9-11) as well as the selection of Bill Warner as Chief Steward, a newly created position.
