A participação de soldados negros na Guerra do Paraguai revela muito sobre as desigualdades sociais e raciais do século XIX na América do Sul. Longe de ser um fenômeno exclusivamente brasileiro, a presença de ex-escravos e descendentes de africanos foi uma realidade nos exércitos do Brasil, do Paraguai e do Uruguai. No caso brasileiro, muitos escravizados foram libertos para lutar em nome de seus senhores, ou comprados pelo Estado e por instituições religiosas com a promessa de alforria. Já no Paraguai, o governo de Solano López recorreu à convocação forçada de cativos e jovens libertos, demonstrando que a escravidão ainda era uma prática ativa no país.
