Today is Wednesday, July 17th and Happy 48th Birthday to singer Luke Bryan. ***07.17.24 – BIRTHDAY – LUKE BRYAN*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. A New Statewide Appointment for Gwinnett Leader Gwinnett Officials Have 'No Interest' In Defending Legislation that created Mulberry Norcross Man Arrested for Fatal Shooting on Jimmy Carter Blvd. Plus, my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on seedless watermelons. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG STORY 1: AROUND TOWN: A New Statewide Appointment For Gwinnett Leader Jennifer Fennell, a prominent figure in Gwinnett County, has been appointed by Governor Brian Kemp to serve on the State Board of Education as the representative for Georgia's 13th Congressional District. Fennell, known for her leadership roles in various community organizations and as the Gwinnett District Manager at Jackson EMC, previously served on the Unlicensed Practice of Law Committee. This appointment marks her second state-level role in recent months. Additionally, Gwinnett's legislative candidates have garnered attention from the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, highlighting their potential to strengthen the Democratic Party's influence in Georgia. Victoria Jones, a Lawrenceville City Councilwoman, has also been sworn in for a second term on the Georgia Municipal Association's Board of Directors, where she serves as the Northeast Region president. STORY 2: Gwinnett Officials Have ‘No Interest' In Defending Legislation that created Mulberry Gwinnett County has filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit challenging the creation of the city of Mulberry. The lawsuit, brought by Stephen Hughes, argues that Senate Bill 333, which authorized Mulberry's incorporation and subsequent referendum, violates the Georgia Constitution. County officials share concerns over the legality of SB 333 and its financial implications, including costs associated with upcoming city council elections and a two-year transition period to city control. The legal battle involves multiple lawsuits questioning the constitutionality of SB 333, with implications for local governance and financial responsibilities as Mulberry, anticipated to become Gwinnett's largest city by area, prepares to form. STORY 3: Norcross Man Arrested For Fatal Shooting On Jimmy Carter Blvd. Gwinnett County police have arrested Ernesto Garcia-Bailon, a 20-year-old Norcross man, for allegedly shooting and killing a man outside a gas station on Jimmy Carter Blvd. Garcia-Bailon faces charges including aggravated assault, felony murder, and malice murder and is currently held at Gwinnett County Jail. The victim's identity hasn't been disclosed pending family notification. Police responded to the incident on Sunday night following a 911 call reporting gunshots. Despite efforts to save him, the victim died from multiple gunshot wounds. Surveillance footage from the scene captured the fatal shooting, showing one suspect shooting the victim near a wooded area. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact GCPD detectives. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. STORY 5: Japanese Coating Machine Manufacturer Opening First U.S. Office in Norcross Hirano Tecseed Co., a Japanese leader in coating machines, has selected Norcross for its first U.S. office, announced during a business mission to Japan by Partnership Gwinnett and Georgia Department of Economic Development officials. The move aims to better serve American clients and expand in the U.S. market. Specifics on job creation and office location are pending. Hirano Tecseed's machines apply coatings for various products like adhesive tape, aircraft parts, and electronic components. The Button Mushroom (Agaricus bisporus): An Alternative Control Source for the Grocott Methenamine Silver Technique Authors: From University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Center, Houston, TX- Fatimah Ansar; Carla Arredondo; Tran Huynh; Victoria Jones; Jennifer Le; Duong Nguyen; Andres Ronquillo-Erazo; Minnu Varghese; Kaleena Ramirez; Toysha Mayer; Mark A. Bailey Identifying the presence of fungi through special histotechniques is a critical diagnostic histopathology test for patients who may have acquired a fungal infection localized in the lungs. The purpose of this study was to determine if the mushroom species Agaricus bisporus, generally known as the Button Mushroom and, commonly used for cooking, may be used a special stain control slide. Is the Button Mushroom a reliable fungal control to use when performing a Grocott Methenamine Silver technique test? The investigators hypothesize the Agaricus bisporus mushroom is a good substitute control for result verification of the GMS staining technique and readily available compared to tissue controls. The button mushrooms were purchased from a local grocer in Houston, TX, subsequently grossed into eight 1.0x1.0x0.4cm representative sections and submitted for routine tissue processing, embedding, sectioning and stained using the H&E and Grocott Methenamine methods. Inclusive, for the test a commercially available human lung tissue control (+) for fungi was compared to the Button Mushroom results and to ensure the GMS technique produced the appropriate result. The processed button mushrooms GMS stain did not yield a definitive result to conclude the outcome of the staining method. The stained GMS slides demonstrated an indistinguishable contrast between the morphology of the mushroom and the presence of fungi; however, the H&E demonstrated the morphology well, however, further studies are necessary to confirm the presence of fungi. The use of alternative controls are dependent on the specific clinical; research goals or experimental conditions to provide appropriate and relevant results. The limitations of the research was, not together with, the GMS to perform a PAS stain on the button mushrooms. Subsequently, we will perform the PAS technique on the button mushrooms and test a different alternative source to establish a viable control for the substitution of human tissue (+) for fungi.

Victoria Jones is a community pharmacist at Bonnybrook Pharmacy in Coolock, Dublin. She received very little education on the menopause when training and became more interested in hormone health after her sister experienced severe symptoms at 40 and began taking HRT. The dramatic return of her sister's health and wellbeing prompted Victoria to move away from running a chain of pharmacies to set up her own independent pharmacy with a focus on women's health. When Victoria experienced her own perimenopause and she saw the profound benefits of HRT for herself, her passion escalated and Victoria now takes a very active role in raising awareness in her community with the public and local healthcare professionals, and in educating others through her social media. Victoria's advice to women: Ask your pharmacist if they've done any training on the menopause and if not, mention the resources available such as on balance website and the Confidence in the Menopause course on fourteenfish.com. Find the right pharmacist for you. Don't be fobbed off by healthcare professionals, if you aren't listened to the first time, go in more empowered with information the next time. Ask for a specific clinical reason why they will not prescribe HRT, and ask them to write it down for you. Your pharmacist can explain how and when to take your HRT medication if your doctor wasn't sure, or you didn't have time to discuss thing fully. Your pharmacist can also help with information on improving health through lifestyle measures such as nutrition and exercise.
