In both 2024 and 2025, Jake Watt, head brewer at Trap Door in Washougal, Washington, took home gold medals in the GABF fresh hop category for his beer, Fresher Than Fresh. Interestingly, the recipes for each of those beers was quite different—and the recipe for the 2026 edition that he'll submit this year will see more changes as well. Fresh-hopped beers are a moving target, ephemeral in nature, and making the best possible beers today means using all the things—unkilned cones harvested that morning, Cryo Fresh pellets, flowable hop products, and even a touch of Riwaka here and there. In this episode, Watt shares insights into the iterative changes and evolving ingredients in Trap Door's medal-winning fresh-hopped beer. Along the way, he touches on: unlocking the best Mosaic character with Krush and Riwaka using deep-cut Cascade with additional thiol character flavor stability in fresh-hopped beers when hot-side hopping taking advantage of fresh-hop season to gain access to specific lots from certain growers focusing on Oregon-grown hops for fresh-hopped beers due to earlier pick windows mechanically chopping fresh cones controlling dilution and pH rise in fresh-hopped beers layering in character with fresh-frozen hop pellets sneaking smaller amounts of Cryo Fresh into beers not labeled as fresh hops And more. This week, Geektown Radio heads to MCM Comic Con London for a special episode recorded around one of the UK's biggest pop culture events, which took over ExCeL London for a packed weekend of TV, film, games, anime, comics, cosplay, panels and general geeky mayhem.Dave went down to the convention for the weekend, although sadly Darryl had to drop out after being struck down ill, leaving Dave to tackle the heat, the crowds, the press room, and as many panels as one person could physically manage! In the episode, Dave chats about the MCM experience, including the cosplay, the show floor, the strange relief of stepping into an air-conditioned convention centre during a 32C London weekend, and catching up with some brilliant comic creators. That includes Neil Gibson's Twisted Comics, who now have a comic book adaptation of Black Mirror's USS Callister, and Beyond The Bunker Comics, the wonderfully bonkers minds behind Moon and the new The Trap Door comic. The main bulk of the episode features clips and interviews from across the weekend, including Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk, best known together from Firefly, Con Man and The Rookie, as they share some very funny convention stories. We also hear from the Hellaverse panel, hosted by CJ Allen, with Richard Steven Horvitz, Vivian Nixon and Erika Henningsen discussing Helluva Boss, Hazbin Hotel, renewal news, voice recording, and the chaos Brandon Rogers can bring to a session. There are also clips from the Beyond Paradise panel with Kris Marshall, Zahra Ahmadi, Dylan Llewellyn and Felicity Montagu, as they talk about the hit Death In Paradise spin-off.Finally, Dave plays the full press room interview with the cast of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, featuring Dee Bradley Baker, Matt Lanter, James Arnold Taylor, Nika Futterman and Catherine Taber, as they discuss the legacy of the much-loved animated series, their characters, the fans, and the wider Star Wars universe. There will also be video versions of some panels and interviews going up on the Geektown YouTube channel, along with cosplay and event photos on Geektown.co.uk.Listen below, and don't forget to subscribe to Geektown Radio wherever you get your podcasts.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Donard Geci fell into studying spiders by accident, but now he can't imagine his life without them. He's one of the only arachnologists in the Balkans, a hotspot for spiders as well as plenty of other flora and fauna. It's difficult, he says, “but you have many things to do here because many groups are unexplored.”Trapdoor spiders are masterful architects, and there is so much work to do in order to better understand their relationships to one another. Fortunately, Donard isn't deterred at all and wants to encourage even more scientists to study the amazing quantity of life found in the Balkans. Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is musician and writer Garreth Hirons, who's sitting through the loading screen waiting for any sign of Copper Blue by Sugar, the Crusader Nuts advert, The Hobbit on the ZX Spectrum, Too Sussed? by These Animal Men, Spring 1994 EP by S*M*A*S*H and Ghoulies Horror Bar. Along the way we'll be querying why ZX Spectrum games with 'Way Of' in the title refused to load, catching up on Season Four of The Weird Butcher Man That Comes And Stands Next To You At The Bar, debating whether the New Wave Of New Wave could have been saved by selling more trousers, revealing how Brett Anderson disqualified himself from appearing on compilations and - of course - trying to attack Thorin with the Trolls' Path.Garreth has also appeared on Looks Unfamiliar talking about The Bigger The God, Food Fighters, Saboteur, The Triangle Of Terror, Sizzlin' Bacon Monster Munch, and Fun At The Funeral Parlour here, The Yellow Album by The Simpsons, the Frankie Goes To Hollywood computer game, Sweet 75, Linc's, Transformers 'Action Masters', The Way Of The Tiger and Quatro here, The Ghosts Of Oxford Street here and the Futurama Christmas Specials here. You can also find Garreth on The Golden Age Of Children's TV talking about Trap Door here.If you enjoy Looks Unfamiliar, you can help to support the show by buying us a coffee here. Send us a textIn this episode, we discuss the trio's journey through the trap door in our version of the Harry Potter TV show. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· Listen to episode 315, QuizMaster: Trap Door Edition here!· 1:19 Challenge question and recap of Tea Leaves S1 E6.· 7:56 The first shots of the episode show us the quiet stillness of the castle at night. The moon is shining, and there is an eerie air about the corridors. The trio approaches the door and goes through to Fluffy's chamber. There should be a harp playing and a flute, and they jump through. Fluffy shouldn't wake up like he does in the films to preserve this eerie air.· 12:50 The devil snare. It should remain largely the same because a lot of important details in terms of character dynamics are revealed. But when they all escape there should be a more magical escape. Perhaps all the devil snare recedes in a flash and they are left in a room with a door to the key room.· 18:05 The flying keys. They should stay pretty much the same. The balance of this whole trapdoor sequence is struck already, and we shouldn't mess with that too much.· 19:51 The chess match. This is one of the most intense parts of the trap door adventure. The pieces are smashed to pieces when they are taken, and the trio are standing in the face of these blocks of rock are slowly moving towards them to find their next victim. Ron sees the moves and sacrifices himself so Harry and Hermione might go on. Perhaps a sacrifice like that is required by the room for them to move on.· 24:52 The potions riddle. Hermione is an absolute boss in this scene because she shows us all how critically she can think. Those skills come in handy for sure later on in the story.· 28:21 The final scene. Quirrell turns around and Harry is shocked that it isn't Snape. Most of this scene should stay the same, but there's one moment I want to see. When Voldemort offers Harry power, immortality, and his family back, I want to see Harry's reaction. The fact that Harry doesn't react to power and immortality, but he considers his family back for just a moment is super important. That one moment shows us more about Harry than we've learned in the rest of the book for that.Having anything you want to hear or say? Click here for a voice submission or here for text. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, we revisit one of the most intriguing storylines of the late summer and autumn in the first instalment of a new KM0 series - Trapdoor - examining the fight to avoid relegation from the WorldTour. First up is Astana and their miraculous recovery from a dire position a year ago. Exactly how did the recruitment of a data scientist, new bikes, a bit of ‘Moneyball' recruitment and a completely fresh approach to race planning revive a team that looked dead and buried twelve months ago? Maybe the key individual in the whole, miraculous process, the team's Head of Performance, Vasilis Anastopoulos, reveals many if not all of the secrets in this interview with Daniel Friebe. I'm reading S.C. Gwynne's incredible book Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History, and it's making me think about Israel, Gaza, and the fatal arrogance of the leadership class throughout history. A scathing review of Bill Clinton's new book brings that arrogant tendency right up to 2025, as we witness the Democratic Party's inability to conjure a coherent battle plan to confront Trump and company's unbelievably evil intentions. We revisit some beloved children's television series from the seventies and eighties this week as Chris Diamond returns to talk about those occasions when Spike Milligan would pop up as a special guest in shows such as Super Gran, The Sooty Show, Pob's Programme, Jackanory, The Muppet Show, Number 73, Tiswas and The Ratties (which Spike narrated). Wiping a nostalgia-fuelled tear from his eye, Chris regrets the lack of original children's programming which has cut-through these days and warmly reminisces about other shows from the period such as The Wombles, The Smurfs and The Trap Door (with Willie Rushton). There's also time for a game of 'Which Major Celebrity Of The Eighties Didn't Guest Star In Super Gran?' and an attempt by Chris to remember the lyrics to that show's infectiously catchy theme tune. With huge thanks to the exceptional Roger Langridge for this episode's artwork!
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series of series on the independent games of the last couple of decades, starting with 2012's Fez. We set the game in its time, talk a bit about its precedents and the landscape of independent games in the middle of that console generation. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Single-digit cubes Issues covered: our real plan or lack thereof, early games, the indie revolution, the influences back and forth, the pressure of the space we're in, a highly visible indie, games from that year, sequels vs the different stuff in the indies, democratization of the market, the console cycle, always online fiasco, getting on the Steam store, opening console store fronts to independents, limitations, the broadband market and bandwidth costs, the publicity on the store, low cost of goods, continuing power of retail, a two dimensional puzzle game in a three dimensional world, charm, great music and MIDI with an unsettling feel, rotating the world, rebooting the game, achieving the effect without perspective, the Trixel engine, having a hard time getting it, trusting the game, having a new lens on a game, taking the time to infuse the whole experience, team sizes, telling a different story with an existing language, having fewer people to get on board, independent publishers and producers, influences, glitch aesthetics, map language, climbing on the sides of things, stopping time while the world rotates, how the editor might work, games from the past, CONFIG.SYS (dang it, could not remember), skipping over generations. The episode begins with a host setting the atmosphere for a spine-chilling story, highlighting the cold weather outside and inviting listeners to prepare for a tale titled "Devilstone." This narrative unfolds in Dublin, where the protagonist, Timothy Martin, leads a comfortable life thanks to a substantial inheritance. However, his tranquil existence is disrupted when he inherits an abandoned property in County Fermanagh, known as Devilstone, from a forgotten uncle.Timothy's initial reaction is nonchalant; he considers renting the property out but is met with a skeptical response from his solicitor, Ian Carney. Carney strangely advises against renting it to prospective tenants, raising curiosity and concern. Shortly after, a visitor named Mr. Stoker arrives, furious about having visited Devilstone with his wife. Stoker claims that the house is haunted, which Timothy dismisses as absurd, thinking it's merely an excuse to avoid the rental.Despite Everts, Timothy's loyal manservant, suggesting the hauntings might have a foundation, Timothy is determined to investigate Devilstone for himself. They travel to the estate, encountering an imposing, gloomy mansion that unsettles both of them and their dog, Kim. As they explore the property, strange occurrences and eerie sounds begin to surface, raising the tension. The narrative escalates with Timothy feeling someone's presence, witnessing strange footprints appearing in the mud, and experiencing physical manifestations of terror. Undeterred, he pushes forward, wanting to investigate further despite the creeping fear. However, they soon find themselves trapped in a room as doors mysteriously close, and a chilling voice ominously warns them of impending danger. The ghostly figure of Jason O'Flynn, Timothy's ancestor who had died tragically on the very grounds, appears, confirming that the house is indeed haunted. The suspense builds as Timothy learns about the tragic backstory of Jason O'Flynn, who cursed the place after the demise of his wife. This curse has seemingly trapped his spirit within the house, and the connection to the recent events becomes clear. Timothy resolves to uncover more about the mystery shrouding the estate. The investigation moves forward, but the discoveries lead to a climactic moment when Timothy and Everts uncover a trapdoor concealing the preserved body of Jason O'Flynn himself. This revelation ultimately leads to the lifting of the curse, allowing the ghost to finally rest in peace. The episode closes with a sense of foreboding yet comfort, as the host reflects on the themes of fear and gratitude, urging listeners to find solace in their lives as they drift off to sleep.Overall, the episode is a rich blend of suspense, historical intrigue, and supernatural elements, examining themes of legacy, fear, and confronting the unknown. With careful narrative pacing and intriguing character development, it culminates in a resolved mystery that lingers in the mind of the audience.

My guest today is Dr. Matt Zakreski, an expert on neurodivergency with an eclectic approach. Dr. Matt tells me about growing up as a twice-exceptional kid himself and what he's seeing with the teens he works with now. I ask Dr. Matt what parents can do about the emotional intensity that comes with raising teens, especially neurodivergent teens. He reminds us that “emotions can't be wrong,” and you know I loved it when Dr. Matt reminds us to get curious about our teen's feelings. Dr. Matt brings up perfectionism and why we might see more rigidity & anxiety spike during stressful times. We dig into trapdoor perfectionism, how we can invite kids to accept coaching, help, & practice when they're resistant, and handing over energetic responsibility. Takeaways from the show The Performance Cliff Asynchronous development & high emotional intensity Raising neurodivergent kids with neurotypical siblings Neurodivergent behavior versus typical teen behavior “Emotions can't be wrong” You don't have to understand to show up well 3 directions of perfectionism Should = could + shame Trapdoor perfectionism Validating our teens gives them permission to show up authentically as themselves Kids do as well as they can with the tools they have in that moment For more show notes, including transcripts, visit our website here.
