De koers van bitcoin schoot de afgelopen week opnieuw omhoog, tot boven de eerdere records. Toch waarschuwt analist Bert Slagter van kennisplatform Bitcoin Alpha voor te veel euforie: volgens hem is “Uptober” geen natuurwet. De term verwijst naar de vaak stijgende markten in oktober, maar Slagter benadrukt dat het herstel alleen houdbaar is als het gepaard gaat met structurele signalen, zoals toenemende handelsvolumes en instroom in beleggingsproducten. De vraag is: wanneer is Bitcoin nu écht op weg naar veel hogere koersen? Of zit de markt al in die nieuwe fase? Ondertussen zorgt in Europa het advies van de European Systemic Risk Board voor opschudding. De belangrijke adviesraad wil een verbod op zogenoemde multi-issue stablecoins, digitale munten die worden gedekt door meerdere valuta of soorten activa. Volgens de ESRB is het toezicht op die munten onvoldoende, en kunnen ze in een crisis extra risico’s veroorzaken. Het verbod zou moeten voorkomen dat schokken op de cryptomarkt overslaan naar het bredere financiële systeem. Voor consumenten betekent het dat sommige stablecoins in de toekomst niet meer beschikbaar zullen zijn, terwijl bedrijven die de munten gebruiken hun betaalstructuren moeten aanpassen. Het advies is niet bindend, maar de kans is groot dat de Europese Commissie het meeneemt in verdere regelgeving. Daarmee past het in een bredere trend van toenemende controle op de cryptosector binnen de EU. De Europese Centrale Bank zette intussen een volgende stap richting de Digitale Euro. De ECB heeft de technische partners gekozen die de munt moeten helpen ontwikkelen. Onder meer Amazon Web Services, Worldline en CaixaBank gaan de komende maanden werken aan onderdelen zoals de infrastructuur en de koppeling met commerciële banken. De ECB bevindt zich in de laatste testfase van het project. Als die succesvol verloopt, kan in 2026 worden besloten of de Digitale Euro daadwerkelijk wordt ingevoerd. Aan de overkant van de oceaan is het vermogensbeheerder Vanguard die de cryptowereld in beweging brengt. Het bedrijf, dat jarenlang een afwachtende houding aannam, overweegt nu om handel in crypto mogelijk te maken op zijn platform. Volgens Bloomberg bekijkt Vanguard hoe het zich moet verhouden tot de groei van crypto-ETF’s, waarin miljarden dollars omgaan. Een dergelijke koerswijziging zou grote gevolgen hebben voor de legitimiteit van de sector. De Autoriteit Financiële Markten heeft voor het eerst sinds de invoering van de Europese cryptowet MiCAR een openbare waarschuwing uitgegeven. Het gaat om MEXC Global, een platform dat zonder vergunning actief is in Nederland. Volgens de AFM brengt dat risico’s met zich mee voor consumenten, omdat toezicht ontbreekt. Voor Nederlanders die gebruikmaken van MEXC betekent dit dat zij zelf opdraaien voor eventuele problemen, zoals verlies van tegoeden of conflicten met het platform. De waarschuwing zelf heeft geen juridische consequenties, maar is bedoeld om consumenten te waarschuwen. De timing van de waarschuwing valt samen met een bredere discussie over de effectiviteit van MiCAR. Bestuursvoorzitter van de AFM, Laura van Geest, schreef in het FD dat strengere regels en meer bevoegdheden voor de toezichthouder noodzakelijk zijn. Daarmee sluit zij aan bij een eerder pleidooi van de Franse toezichthouder, die twijfels uitte over de praktische toepasbaarheid van MiCAR. Het signaal uit Nederland kan worden gezien als een steun in de rug voor het Franse standpunt. De vraag blijft of het antwoord moet worden gezocht in nieuwe wetgeving, of in scherpere handhaving van bestaande regels. Voorlopig is duidelijk dat de AFM de publieke confrontatie niet schuwt. Op de markt zelf was het afgelopen week vooral onrustig rond de prijs van bitcoin. De koers zakte onder de 110.000 dollar, maar herstelde daarna tot zo’n 113.500 dollar. Tim Stolte, portfoliomanager bij Amdax, wijst erop dat bitcoin minder presteert dan andere markten zoals aandelen en goud. Terwijl aandelenindices nieuwe records neerzetten en goud profiteert van geopolitieke onzekerheid, blijft bitcoin achter. De afgelopen weken kabbelt de koers vooral voort. Of er binnenkort een uitbraak komt, is onzeker, maar de markt wacht zichtbaar op een nieuwe impuls. Verder kondigde ING samen met acht andere Europese banken de lancering aan van een gezamenlijke stablecoin. De munt, die wordt uitgegeven door een nieuw Nederlands bedrijf en onder toezicht van De Nederlandsche Bank komt te staan, moet een Europees tegenwicht vormen voor de dominante Amerikaanse stablecoins. Daarmee zetten de banken een stap in een markt die al grotendeels wordt beheerst door partijen als Tether en Circle. De vraag is of het initiatief niet te laat komt, en of het consumenten werkelijk iets oplevert. Critici wijzen erop dat een banken-stablecoin weinig toevoegt aan bestaande betaalmogelijkheden. Ook is het de vraag of dit project kan concurreren met de digitale euro waar de Europese Centrale Bank aan werkt. Co-host is Peter Slagter.
