This week's episode looks at how injuries derailed the Grizzlies, looked at the best and worst moves from the front office, played a game of fact or fiction, and handed out their 2023 player grades. Embrace Debate: The Grizzlies caught the injury bug at the wrong time this season. Coming into the playoffs Steven Adams and Brandon Clarke were already out, Ja then reinjured his hand in game one, and Kennard missed game six with a shoulder. The injuries became too much for Memphis to overcome with a depleted bench unit. Kleiman Corner: Zach Kleiman is heralded as one of the best general managers in basketball but had a few misses that led to that short, inexperienced bench in the playoffs. Draft trades sent out ROY candidate Walker Kessler and bench scorer De'Anthony Melton. Acquiring Kennard was a step in the right direction to address shooting concerns but it was only the first step to what might be a roster overhaul in the summer. Fact or Fiction: Dave makes statements, Matt and Xavier decide if they're factual or cap-tual. Player Grades: The guys give out their grades for Memphis' top players this season.
The Core Four this week talks about the future of Dillon Brooks in Memphis, roster moves for the summer, playoff injuries and get their hottest takes off for the entire league. Embrace Debate: Dillon poked the bear. Brooks celebrated the game two victory by calling out the King, only to no show and be ejected in game three. Will he still be in Memphis next season? Kleiman Corner: The Grizzlies need to change the roster going into next season. Veteran leadership is at the top of the list with a scoring wing. Mainstays like Tyus Jones and Steven Adams could be on their way out for a move to bring in another star. This League: Turn off injuries. Giannis, Kawhi, Embiid, Ja - all superstars missing games due to injury. Should titles be remembered for those who didn't play more than those who did? Hot Takes: Taylor Jenkins hot seat, Knicks contenders, Timberwolves delayed vacations.

The Grizzlies took the floor Wednesday in Memphis for Game 2 of the first round series against the Lakers without star guard Ja Morant. They've played well without him, but given how shorthanded the Grizzlies already are without Steven Adams and Brandon Clarke, it provided Los Angeles with a primo opportunity to steal a second game in Memphis and return to LA for Game 3 with a 2-0 series lead. Man, did the Lakers squander that chance. Save a couple players (if this was some kind of hoops version of Top Chef, only LeBron James and Rui Hachimura would be safe from elimination), nobody on the Lakers played anything approaching a genuinely good game. A few were average, a few too many were bad. Particularly D'Angelo Russell (2-11) and Anthony Davis, who while providing some real presence defensively for much of the game was a total no-show on the other end. 4-14 shooting, with a couple of turnovers. That's just not good enough. But more than any single individual performance, it's the energy and effort the Lakers opened with that was particularly disappointing. Credit Memphis with a spirited effort, but the Grizzlies weren't all that great, either. They didn't get uncharacteristically brilliant performances from their frontline players. They shot 42% from the field, and 30% from 3-point range. They just played harder than the Lakers, and with more attention to detail. How much will this game ultimately haunt the Lakers? We'll see. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers blow a big opportunity to put a hammer lock on the series. SEGMENT 2: Did anybody show up for LA on Wednesday? Davis and Russell were particularly bad. SEGMENT 3: Any concern going forward about the guys who didn't play well? Russell in particular, who had a bad play-in game, too? They are in awe of the performance of Desmond Baines in Game One and talk about how he could possibly repeat that game. On this week's episode, the Starting 5 began the show by discussing how the Grizzlies can operate knowing Steven Adams is likely out for the playoffs. With a first-round matchup with either the Los Angeles Lakers or Minnesota Timberwolves on the horizon, the Grizzlies cannot catch a break with the tough news cycle. In the next segment, the Starting 5 discussed what their expectations are for rookie forward Kenneth Lofton Jr. After Kennedy Chandler was waived to create an additional roster spot, Junior was signed to the active roster following the news that Steven Adams is likely out for the playoffs. Next, the Starting 5 predicted the NBA's play-in tournament winners. While Grizzlies fans are mostly focused on the Lakers-Timberwolves game, the guys predicted every play-in game including the final two that will determine the 8th seeds in each conference. To close the show, the Starting 5 discussed their expectations of the Grizzlies for the entire postseason. Ja Morant said they are "fine" back in December before the injuries to Steven Adams and Brandon Clarke. Have their expectations adjusted or is it the same? This week's Core Four covers the Steven Adams news, Kenny Lofton's contract, give their final NBA Title Contenders list, and end-of-season awards. X's and O's: Steven Adams will reportedly miss the entire postseason. The guys discuss how the Grizzlies can fill the void left by the big Kiwi. Jaren Jackson has shown growth as a rebounder and now will have to prove it on the biggest stage. Can he overcome foul trouble that limited his effectiveness from last season? Embrace Debate: Kenny Lofton Jr. has been signed to a new fully guaranteed contract. To make room for Junior, Kennedy Chandler had to be let go. Xavier believes Lofton has earned this contract but it could be an overreaction to the loss of Steven Adams. We didn't see much of Chandler this season but the door could be open for a return next year. NBA Title Contenders Ranked by the College Football Playoff Committee: The guys go over their year-end aggregate top 10 based on their voting throughout the season. The top ten list has all the legitimate contenders....and the Hawks. This week's rankings are where the guys see the title landscape on the precipice of the postseason. Trophy Case: Lizzo and Lovie Smith make an appearance in the regular season finale of the Trophy case. Xavier awards Kenny Lofton, Matt finds the thesis behind the Grizzlies' and Thunder's seasons, and Dave evaluates the Minnesota spiral

Also, Parth Upadhyaya joins the show to discuss the news-filled weekend of Tiger basketball.

Of late, The Athletic's Shams Charania hasn't exactly been the bearer of good news for Lakers fans. And Monday, talking with FanDuelTV, wasn't much different. Charania noted that while the Lakers are going to re-evaluate LeBron James after three weeks, there is certainly some belief that the actual length of LeBron's absence could extend past that mark. Well past it, potentially, calling into serious question just how much regular season action James might get before a (hypothetical) play-in matchup. Or whether the Lakers can hang on long enough to even make those last few games meaningful. And what exactly will be the considerations the Lakers and LeBron make when deciding whether LeBron can/should return to action? It's all very speculative and super-unpleasant for the Lakers, and puts that much more pressure on Anthony Davis to elevate the team, D'Angelo Russell to get back on the floor, and the supporting cast to rise a little above role player status. But the flip side? The schedule is favorable. The Lakers play teams in front of them, they play teams that are slumping. They play teams, like Tuesday against Memphis, missing significant pieces (Ja Morant, Steven Adams, Brandon Clarke). They've shown themselves fully capable of winning games since the deadline. One reason? Guys like Troy Brown Jr., who has thrived since the Lakers reorganized the roster at the deadline, finding a steadier role, greater confidence and plenty of rhythm. He's now firmly occupying that spot on the roster of cheap offseason additions last summer that now look appealing to hold on to this summer, but could be tough because he's outplayed his contract. Finally, the Lakers will retire Pau Gasol's 16 on Tuesday. He's one of the best humans we've covered in sports, and now finds himself not only representing a symbol of basketball greatness and Lakers greatness, but as important connective tissue for the memory of Kobe Bryant. It's a unique role he is well-suited to play. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Just how many games is LeBron going to miss, now? SEGMENT 2: The burden on AD, and the increasing confidence of Troy Brown. SEGMENT 3: Pau Gasol gets his jersey retired tonight. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
