When the 2025 NBA Finals conclude in a few days, teams across the league will be able to exclusively negotiate with their own pending free agents. With the Rockets, that includes names such as Fred VanVleet, Steven Adams, Jeff Green, Aaron Holiday, and Jae'Sean Tate. So, with Houston's payroll on the rise, what internal deals are likely to make basketball and business sense? Tuesday's podcast explores the parameters, including why new three-year contracts for VanVleet (around $90 to $100 million, in total) and Adams ($40 to $45 million, in total) could be the sweet spot for both the player and team.
Bleav Host Robert Land asks Rockets Analyst Bryson @RedNationBlogga if it's worth giving up Jabari in Durant trade, if Brook Lopez will work if Steven Adams goes & what lessons the Rockets can learn from the playoffs. Wednesday's episode features reaction and insight from our Ben DuBose to a handful of recent NBA rumors connected to the Rockets. Those include the New York Knicks' reported interest in Ime Udoka as head coach; a potential Kevin Durant trade with the Phoenix Suns perhaps getting closer; and free agent Brook Lopez becoming a potential backup plan for Houston, should Steven Adams choose to sign elsewhere.
The Rockets could complete their roster by keeping Steven Adams and trading either Reed Sheppard or the 10th overall pick for a smaller move. Some of the core guys on the Astros are struggling with less than a .700 OPS and the team looks completely different from years past. What Texans' player would be best in the Olympics? Should NFL superstars join and is it safe to do so?
This week in the Niche Cache we reflect on a fun weekend of New Zealand sports that featured a bunch of away wins. After a quick hot take about Ardie Savea we ponder Steven Adams' free agency and check in with the latest Indian Panthers drama, before updating the NZ NBL where Hayden Jones is shining for Nelson Giants. Jones is part of the NZ Under 19 team which is full of fantastic kiwi youngsters and deserves some spotlight as well, which is the same for the NZ Warriors development pipeline. Tanner Stowers-Smith is the latest youngster to make his debut during the win vs Dolphins and there is a clear connection between the youngsters at Mt Smart and a NSW Cup team that can't stop winning. We touch on a few more Warriors details like key trios, wrestling and Jacob Laban/Leka Halasima development before rolling through the latest NRLW signing news where Bulldogs have lots of wahine from Aotearoa. We discuss Chris Wood, Marko Stamenic and Elijah Just activities then we dive into the Auckland FC win vs Melbourne Victory and the hype around their return leg in Auckland for a bumper weekend at Mt Smart. We finish with a net session updating County Championship cricket and the sneaky epic NZ-A win in Bangladesh.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/elnichecacheNewsletter: https://thenichecache.substack.comHook us up with a brew: https://buymeacoffee.com/thenichecacheSay kia ora: thenichecache@gmail.comwww.theniche-cache.com(00:00) Intro(19:27) Mindfulness(21:18) Steven Adams(27:52) NBL/NZ U19(43:07) NZ Warriors(01:16:26) NRLW(01:22:39) Chris Wood/Marko Stamenic/Elijah Just(01:35:00) Auckland FC(01:55:37) NZ-A win in Bangladesh

Patterson opens up about his time in India's pro league, his rollercoaster ride with the Brisbane Bullets, and why things unravelled during his stint with the New Zealand Breakers. He also shares how close he came to signing NBL deals in each of the past two seasons, what's kept him motivated off the radar, and why he still hopes to return to the league that made him a fan favourite. Hosted by Ben DuBose and Paulo Alves, Thursday's episode reviews Houston's 2025 playoff run for each of its eight rotation players and head coach Ime Udoka.Using a “stock up, stock down, and neutral” grading system, the show reviews the good (Amen Thompson, Steven Adams, and Fred VanVleet) for the Rockets; the bad (Jalen Green); and everything in between during a seven-game series loss to Golden State.

After fighting back from a 3-1 deficit to tie their first-round series against the Warriors, the Rockets' 2025 playoff run is over after a home loss in Game 7. In the aftermath of a dreadful showing on offense (74 points in the first 45+ minutes), Monday's show features reaction by our Ben DuBose to what went wrong against Golden State. Topics include the reasons for inefficient showings by Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun; the spacing limitations of “double big” lineups (Steven Adams and Sengun) when used with Amen Thompson; and a few positives to take out of the near-comeback, starting with Thompson and Fred VanVleet.

After once trailing the Warriors, 3-1, in their first-round playoff series, the Rockets have defied the odds to force a Game 7 in Houston! Saturday's mini-episode features a compilation of radio calls (via Matt Thomas, Rockets Radio Network) from Friday's thrilling Game 6 victory at Golden State, along with an exclusive postgame interview (12:00) with veteran center Steven Adams.
After falling behind, 3-1, in their first-round playoff series, the Rockets survived their first elimination game versus the Warriors with a home blowout in Game 5. Can they do the same in Friday's Game 6 at Golden State and force a decisive Game 7 back in Houston? With a pivotal weekend ahead, Thursday's podcast explores what we've learned in recent games while sharing some keys to success in Game 6 and hopefully Game 7. Discussion points include recent improvements from Amen Thompson; the roles of Jalen Green, Fred VanVleet, and Steven Adams as key variables; and the importance of Thompson's defense versus Steph Curry.
Hour 2 of the Killer B's with Joel Blank, and Jeremy Branham talking about every angle of the Rockets heartbreaking Game 4 loss to the Warriors Did Coach Udoka taking Steven Adams off the court after the Warriors went to the "hack-a-Adams" strategy cost the Rockets the game? Also, the guys got into the performance of Sengun. Did you hate his last shot, and is he going too soft in the paint?
This week in the Niche Cache we celebrate Auckland FC who won the A-League Premiers' Plate in their first season. We chat through all the details from their win over Perth Glory and update the wider themes we see in how the Blue Riders play their footy. There are a few kiwi footballers to discuss from the weekend's footy around the world as well before we check in with Steven Adams in the NBA Playoffs and NBL basketball where Canterbury Rams and Auckland Tuatara lead the league, but youngster Jackson Ball keeps making waves with Hawkes Bay Hawks. Then we roll through a fun weekend for NZ Warriors who had wins in the NRL and NSW Cup vs Newcastle Knights, plus a Jersey Flegg Cup draw vs Knights. The Warriors Under 17 team have made the Harold Matthews Cup grand final for the second season in a row which seems notable. Anzac weekend sparked up thoughts of an NZ Kiwis Anzac Test team and this rolls into the best Kiwi-NRL players from the first stanza of the season. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.houseofstrauss.comRogue Bogues podcasters (and former NBA professionals) Andrew Bogut and Mike Procopio are here for the playoffs! We start with the elevated physicality of Warriors-Rockets and whether Amen Thompson is at fault for Jimmy Butler's injury. From there, we're looking back on situations as wide ranging as when Draymond Green kicked Steven Adams in the nuts in 2016, all the way to whether the Warriors tried to trade Steph Curry for our humble podcast guest (not Procoprio) in 2012. Topics include but aren't limited to…* Who's at fault for Jimmy Butler getting injured?* Did Ime Udoka make a mistake by using his move of putting Alperen Şengün on Moses Moody two weeks before the season ended?* Does Bogut think that Draymond Green really tried to kick Steven Adams in the balls back in the 2016 WCF?* What's up with Steve Kerr scolding the Houston crowd for chanting “Fuck Draymond”?* Was Evan Mobley the right choice for DPOY?* We are not fans of how Jonathan Kuminga's been playing* Our theories on why the Mavericks did their disastrous Luka Dončić trade* Would Pro take a bunch of money to do the Luka trade if ownership demanded * How Andrew feels about Mavericks president Rick Welts bringing up his name when trying to justify the infamous trade* Andrew swears that the Milwaukee Bucks had the option of taking Steph Curry instead of Monta Ellis in that 2012 trade* Will Andrew ever coach an NBA team?
One of the latest stories coming from the Phoenix Suns after they let go of coach Mike Budenhozler, came from Chris Haynes, who is reporting that Bol Bol lost his rotation spot when he refused to get in the middle of a scuffle between Mason Plumlee and Steven Adams when the Suns took on the Houston Rockets. Bol was seen shooting layups during the altercation, and apparently Bud was so mad, he cut him from the rotation entirely for the rest of the season. Did he get screwed over? Should the fan favorite get another shot next season? Would he want to come back on a veteran-minimum contract? Erik Ruby and Stephen PridGeon-Garner dive into it on a mini-podcast!
Hosts Michael, Alejandro, and Sid kick off with Jason Tatum's first-game playoff injury, debating how his grit and free-throw resilience will shape Boston's title narrative . They recap early series shocks: the Miami Heat dispatching Atlanta. The Oklahoma City Thunder's historic 69-point rout of Memphis, followed by another 19-point victory, spotlighted Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's streaky shooting yet undeniable MVP-caliber impact . The crew laments Memphis' offseason decisions—losing Dylan Brooks, Steven Adams, and Tyus Jones—and wonders how roster upheaval doomed the Grizzlies.Attention then turns to Eastern and Western play-in drama: Orlando's physical Magic facing a deep Celtics squad despite Tatum's limp; Cleveland's stunning upset of Miami powered by Ty Jerome's 28-point bench explosion . Indiana races to a 2–0 lead over a stagnant Bucks, Minnesota dismantles the Lakers in Game 1 behind youth and size, and the Rockets brace for another Steph Curry clinic. Detroit's Pistons snatch Game 2 from the Knicks, exposing New York's late-game lapses under Coach Thibodeau's heavy rotation. In the marquee West clash, Kawhi Leonard's 39-point flourish in 39 minutes balances Nikola Jokic's historic stat line, even as Denver navigates without a permanent coach. The episode concludes with award-season buzz: Peyton Pritchard's Sixth Man triumph is celebrated, while Clutch Player finalists Jalen Brunson, Anthony Edwards, and Jokic spark lively debate . Previewing tomorrow's unveilings, the hosts weigh Defensive Player, Most Improved, Coach of the Year, and MVP races—setting the stage for how playoff heroics and season-long excellence will be immortalized this summer.Attention then turns to Eastern and Western play-in drama: Orlando's physical Magic facing a deep Celtics squad despite Tatum's limp; Cleveland's stunning upset of Miami powered by Ty Jerome's 28-point bench explosion. In hour three, Tkachuk's official status for Game 1 tomorrow isn't concerning Hoch or Crowder. Should Coach Spo be playing the younger players vs Cleveland? Steven Adams vs a Grizzly Bear. Plus, our friend Mike Cugno of CBS4 joins the show to talk about the Heat Game 1 loss and his take on what the Dolphins will do on Thursday with the 13th overall pick.
The Phoenix Suns have A LOT to figure out this summer. After missing the play-in with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, along with the highest payroll in NBA history, they not only have to replace recently fired coach Mike Budenholzer, they are also largely expected to make a change in the front office, after the failures of James Jones and Josh Bartelstein. With the KD trade looming, Bradley Beal's contract and no-trade clause intact, and a fanbase turned off by the lack of success following championship aspirations, and promises, is this the most important moment in franchise history? Stephen, Gerald and Erik break it down while also discussing the Chris Haynes report on Bol Bol losing his rotation spot because he shot around while Mason Plumlee and Steven Adams started a brawl in a game against the Houston Rockets earlier in the season, Marc Stein's latest reporting on Phoenix's search for a replacement at coach and relive the greatest moments in playoff history for a franchise who should be making more of those memories as they speak. Is this really the most important moment ever? Could a new coach actually convince Kevin Durant to stay in purple and orange, despite the fractured relationship over a blindside trade offer to the Golden State Warriors at the deadline that would have landed Jimmy Butler alongside Devin Booker? Another strand has emerged in the Auckland stadium saga. A group of high-profile New Zealanders, including NBA star Steven Adams and former All Blacks lock Ali Williams have proposed a new 12,500-seat stadium at Western Springs. It's understood that representation from the consortium presented their plans for the new stadium in central Auckland to a closed session of councillors last week. Jalen Green had 29 points while Alperen Sengun scored 20 to lead the Rockets to a 111-104 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday. Houston extended their winning streak to four games. "We got back to guarding at a pretty high level," head coach Ime Udoka said. With Jabari Smith Jr. and Fred VanVleet returning to the lineup, the Rockets have been given a boost as the conclusion of the regular season approaches in a tightly contested race for spots 2-5 in the Western Conference. "The luck of being totally healthy throughout the season is unrealistic," Udoka said. "That's the blessing that we have with our team is that we have a lot of interchangeable parts." Houston has seen success in rolling out bigger lineups, intermixing Smith, Sengun and Steven Adams. "Double bigs have been really good for us," Udoka said. "It comes down to a war of will with the bigs and smalls out there and who can take advantage of what." Adams and Suns center Mason Plumlee were ejected before halftime of Wednesday's matchup after the pair wrestled each other to the court. Adams' presence under the basket on both ends of the floor is a major factor in the Rockets leading the league in offensive rebounds, averaging 14.7 per game this season. "In order to be a really good offensive rebounder like [Adams] does, you have to have a great sense of where the ball is going to come off the rim. But it starts with his strength and wedging guys under, carving out that space for himself. A lot of times, he's going to get the ball, but also he commands a double, triple team on the glass, and he allows other guys to clean up and get those opportunities as well," Udoka said. The Rockets host the Mavericks on Friday in the first of a back-to-back as the Bulls will be in the Toyota Center the following night.
