Escuchar audio

Yesterday's Sports is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Sports Yesteryear.EPISODE SUMMARYLast week, we explored the illustrious careers of Paul Anderson and Tommy Kono. This week, we turn our attention to the legendary Ken Patera and the phenomenal Naim Süleymanoğlu, also known as "Pocket Hercules."Ken Patera, the first American to clean and jerk 500 pounds, was a multi-sport strength athlete who transitioned from Olympic weightlifting to professional wrestling and even competed in the inaugural World's Strongest Man competition. Despite his potential to rival Vasily Alekseyev, Patera's weightlifting career was cut short due to financial constraints and the removal of the press from Olympic competition.Naim Süleymanoğlu, often regarded as the greatest pound-for-pound weightlifter in history, won three Olympic gold medals and set numerous world records. His defection from Bulgaria to Turkey marked a significant political and cultural moment, and his achievements in the sport remain unparalleled.YESTERDAY'S SPORTS BACKGROUNDHost Mark Morthier grew up in New Jersey just across the river from New York City during the 1970s, a great time for sports in the area. He relives great moments from this time and beyond, focusing on football, baseball, basketball, and boxing. Episode 42: Seven Lessons for School LeadershipHuman relationships first. Academic study and arts training are co-curricular. Environment matters. Relentlessly make space for the things that matter most. Compliance is not the same thing as magic. Process matters and so does product. These are just a few of the ideas Jason Patera is obsessed with, which he brings daily to his work as the head of the Chicago Academy for the Arts.Guest: Jason PateraResources, Transcript, and Expanded Show NotesIn This Episode:“Pretty much all you need to do at any time to change someone's life is decide to do it. That's it, right? It's not the facilities that changes someone's life. It's not the mission statement that changes someone's life. It's not the curriculum, it's the people. Right. And most of the time, all we have to do, especially with young people, you meet them where they're at, and, and you have this power to, to help transform their entire life.” (7:02)“What I promise to them is that I'm never going to be some random jerk in a suit who you've only met the day you've done something bad. And you're a teenager, so you're going to do something dumb. When that happens and we have to have a conversation about it, I endeavor for that to be our 40th conversation. So as we have to navigate this thing, we're doing it based on a human relationship and not one of the title that I have or the role that you play in the school.” (19:54)“Most of what we think are our limits are, are illusions, for ourselves personally, and for our communities. And a habit we can get into as school leaders is to fall into the trap that school is somehow already defined, and learning is somehow already defined, and procedures are somehow already defined. And we need to figure those out and do them, when in fact we have tremendous power to just decide what it's going to be.” (41:26)Related Episodes: 40, 36, 34, 32, 27,15, 6 Hosted on Acast. VGK lost in Colorado Monday night 3-2 in a physical preseason game. The Golden Knights started Logan Thompson for the first time in six months. L.T. gave up two goals on 12 shots. One was a turnaround wrister by Ryan Johansen on the power play. The other goal scored by Oskar Olausson off a Michael Amadio turnover. Thompson was replaced by Jiri Patera midway through the game. Patera gave up one goal off another turnover, this one by Nic Hague, who gave up the puck to Curtis McDermott of the Avalanche. We talk about highs and lows in last night's game for VGK. 951.

We get you caught up with the VGK Free Agent moves as the FA period began on Saturday. Neither Tony or Chris feel good about the goalie situation with Adin Hill's contract extension and Logan Thompson coming back from injury and rumors of him being unhappy in Las Vegas. Two goalies are gone - Jonathan Quick to the Rangers and Laurent Brossoit to the Winnipeg Jets, his former team. Hill, Thompson and Jiri Patera look like the top three goalies heading into next season. VGK extended qualifying offers to Patera, Brett Howden and Pavel Dorofeyev before the free agency period began. We discuss VGK Development camp which is currently happening at City National. And we have a check of VGK vs the salary cap in which they are approximately $2.2 million over the cap. We also discuss Sunday night's late (10pm PT) tweet that assistant coach Misha Donskov won't be returning to the club. FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. First online real money wager only. VGK goalies Jonathan Quick (The Amazing Jonathan) and ("The Other Guy") Jiri Patera secured wins in Charlotte and St. Louis over the weekend. The stage belonged to Quick on Saturda as he recorded his 58th career shutout with a 4-0 blanking of the Hurricanes. He had 33 saves and is 3-0 since joining the Golden Knights after the all-star break. Sunday, Patera stopped a Blues comeback late by saving 30 of 33 shots in his first NHL win. The Golden Knights held on for a 5-3 win. It was a one-goal game until former Blues star Alex Pietrangelo scored an empty netter. The game didn't start off well for Patera as he took a blast off his chin from StL's Colton Parayko. But he held on to get the win. We saw repots Sunday that injured goalies Logan Thompson and Laurent Brossoit returned to skating over the weekend. VGK's Keegan Kolesar was sent back to Las Vegas for evaluation after a lower leg injury was suffered in Carolina. Pavel Dorofeyev took his place, but played on the second line and scored his first NHL goal and had an assist. VGK got out to early leads in each of the weekend games.FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. First online real money wager only.
