Dusty Rhodes bemoans to Magnum TA and David Crockett how Baby Doll spent $4035 of his money in Hawaii. I'm happy to say that after almost ten years of doing the podcast, I can finally welcome Rob Naylor (@NINaylor) to the podcast to talk about Jim Crockett Promotions in the summer of 1985, when Rob and I both starting watching the company.We begin by talking about how we first found it, possibly on the same TV station in Philadelphia, even though we live 200 miles from each other in different states. And yes for longtime listeners, we play Mid-Atlantic TV Station Bingo (17, 29, 43, 45, 54, 57). We talk about our favorite wrestlers from those shows, including the booker at the time and later Rob's mentor Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, Magnum TA, Ole and Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Baby Doll, Sam Houston, Manny Fernandez, Jimmy Valiant, the Rock and Roll Express, the Midnight Express and Jim Cornette, Ron Bass, Black Bart, J.J. Dillon and maybe our favorite person of that era, Nature Boy Buddy Landell. We discuss how the guys in the Georgia loop of the company were rarely on the syndicated TV shows, which is all Rob and I could watch regularly, since neither of us had cable yet. We discuss some of the more memorable angles and feuds of that time frame. Suprisingly, we totally did not discuss the return of Superstar Billy Graham to wearing the tie-dye gear and quoting Bo Diddley and/or George Thorogood.There's also a lot of meandering and digressions as one would expect, including the importance of the magazines in our fandom, first getting the Observer, the history of the National, booking around Japan tours, the blandness of Central States and, as young fans, not undestanding the importance of the Missouri title in the wider NWA ecosystem.This was a very fun show to do and I'm glad Rob and I finally got to nerd out on the show about our early fandom.

Black Bart, also known as Bartholomew Roberts, was a Welsh pirate who operated during the early 18th century. Born around 1682 in Pembrokeshire, Wales, Roberts began his life at sea as a merchant seaman but later turned to piracy. He is considered one of the most successful pirates in history, capturing over 400 ships during his career. Roberts started his pirating career in 1718 when he joined a pirate ship captained by Howell Davis. After Davis was killed in battle, Roberts took command of the ship and renamed it Royal Fortune. He became known for his cunning and strategic approach to piracy, often targeting ships carrying valuable goods and using his fleet to attack vessels on multiple coasts. Roberts was a charismatic leader who implemented a code of conduct that emphasized democracy and equality among his crew members. He also provided medical insurance and ensured that his crew received a fair share of the plunder. Despite his success, Roberts was eventually killed in battle by a British ship off the coast of Guinea in 1722. Black Bart's legacy extends beyond his pirating exploits. It's not often a person in wrestling starts at the absolute bottom and works his way to the absolute top. That's exactly what Teddy Long spent decades doing. It all started for him in the late 1980s. A young Long ran errands for wrestlers in Jim Crocket Promotions, which was broadcast weekly on WTBS out of Atlanta. He would also set up the ring before the matches. And quickly, he got his first promotion when he was given a referee shirt. “I went out and the first match I did was Ron Bass and Black Bart. They were in a Texas Death Match,” Long said. But unfortunately for the young Long, he didn't quite understand the pre-scripted nature of pro wrestling, specifically when the wrestlers started bleeding.

Between the years of 1875 and 1883, stagecoaches working along the routes that connected the mining towns in California's gold rush country on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains were used to holdups. A lot of robbers were shot or later caught and sent to prison-but there was one bandit the Wells Fargo agents couldn't catch- and that was Black Bart. Over a period of 8 years he successfully held up 28 stages. At two of these holdups he left a poem in the empty strongbox and signed it Black Bart- PO8. His MO was to appear alone from behind the bushes or a large rock with a shotgun at a point in the trail when the stage had to slow down, and demand that the strongbox be thrown down to him. He wore a flour sack over his head so no one could identify him, and he always escaped on foot in rough country. Curiously, although there were many stage companies working the area, he only held up Wells Fargo stages- as if he had some kind of a grudge to settle- and as it turns out he did.
