In this episode, Lisa and Dave Peterson discuss:The role of personal narratives in college applications and scholarshipsWinning strategies beyond academics and extracurricularsThe importance of future-oriented thinking for scholarship and college admission successFixing common mistakes students make and misconceptions about what matters mostKey Takeaways: Organizations offering scholarships, including colleges, expect a return on investment (ROI), whether through goodwill, marketing, or future impact stories. Applicants should align their personal narrative with the scholarship provider's mission.Up to 90% of scholarship applications are disqualified simply because students fail to follow directions, such as formatting requirements or subject line instructions in emails. While past academics and activities matter, they serve only as indicators of future success. Winning essays focus on how the student will make an impact, not just what they've done. Many families mistakenly believe scholarships are only for high school seniors, but students can apply as early as grade school and continue throughout college. “Basically, when you're applying for a scholarship, you're applying for kind of a job… you have to approach it as if you are applying for a job.” – Dave PetersonAbout Dave Peterson: Dave is a father who wanted to ensure his son would not be burdened by student loan debt. However, he realized he had not saved enough money for his son's college education. So, he devised a plan for his son to earn scholarships. As a result, Dave's son graduated from college without any debt, having earned approximately $100,000 in scholarships. They paid only $1,500 for his son's entire college experience, including tuition, room, board, books, and fees. The CPGGUYS are joined in this episode by Dave Peterson, GM & global head of retail media at Epsilon, where he is responsible for unifying Epsilon's global retail media assets and teams to accelerate retailer and brand adoption of the company's unified retail media platform around the world. This episode is sponsored by Epsilon.Find Dave on Linkedin at : https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-peterson-56b0511/Find Epsilon on Linkedin at : https://www.linkedin.com/company/epsilon/Find Epsilon online at : https://www.epsilon.com/usFor The path to purchase institute omni shopper awards sponsorship : email contact@cpgguys.com or click hereFor the Drug Store News issues summit HBC awards : email contact@cpgguys.com or click hereHere's what we asked him : 1. So, its been a long wait since we've had Epsilon on the CPGGUYS. What's new, what's up, what's changed, how has Epsilon retail media evolved for today's omnichannel shopper?2. In today's volume challenged environment for brands, reach is very important - especially lost households due to loyalty changes driven by pricing. How can you help solve for this reach issue?3. I would apply the same principle to new to brand consumers - how can Epsilon use retail media and subsequent data to bring new to brand consumers?4. Drumroll for our favorite topic itself - retail media. What's new, what's changed and what are new partnerships you have that cpg brands can leverage in your offerings?5. The omnichannel world is 24-7 and 360 in terms of how she connects, how she shops, where she discovers and where she browses - shopping baskets are very fragmented. How can a consistent view of consumers be built showing her connections cross channel?6. Data paralysis is real - brands have more data than they need, yet we hear of 1st party data acquisition - would love your view on data, and how Epsilon supplements and help leverage data assets to get to the targeted consumer?7. Dave -believe you are releasing new capabilities this week. Share more and what brands and retailers should expect?8. Finally, let's ask you to look future forward. What's in store for Epsilon in this retail media space? What's next and how will you leverage AI? Our featured interview tonight is with Noah Slasinski. Noah is a 28-year old pipe smoker from Michigan. His interview is part of our ongoing series of pipe smokers that are under the age of 30. He started with a Missouri Meerschaum hard wood pipe in his late teens and then tried just about every type of tobacco smoking and vaping, but eventually came back exclusively to pipe smoking about a year and a half ago. YouTube videos and Paul's Pipe Shop in Flint MI helped him along the way. Similar to some of our other younger pipe enthusiasts, Noah was influenced by writers and intellectuals that he appreciates, such as Carl Jung, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, Mark Twain and more, as they were all pipe smokers. At the top of the show we will have a trip report on the NASPC show from this past weekend in Colombus from Dave Peterson.

Next in Media spoke with Dave Peterson. general manager, global head of retail media at Epsilon, about his experience building out Target's retail media business, why the industry desperately needs standards and consolidation, and why he's bullish on CTV shopping. Takeaways• Retail media is a growing industry that has its origins in the early 2010s, with only a few players at the time.• There is still a lot of room for growth and innovation in retail media, with only 37% of retailers having offsite media capabilities.• The industry needs to focus on standardization in measurement and address challenges such as fragmentation and identity.• Retail media is not just a bottom-of-the-funnel solution; it can be a full-funnel solution that combines brand and performance marketing.• The future of retail media lies in a consumer-centric approach, reaching individuals with relevant ads in the context of where they are. Joining host Michael Azevedo on this episode are Sean Claffey and Dave Peterson, the director and co-writer of a documentary called "Americonned". The film examines how the past few generations of workers in the US have experienced income inequality and how once-powerful unions have been crushed by big business and its government influence. Wages aren't keeping up, yet productivity has skyrocketed, largely on the backs of the American middle class. The rich are getting richer, the middle class is seeing the bottom drop out. Why? "Americonned" explores what seismic shifts in wealth mean for the future of members of the middle class as consumers and citizens. The documentary is available to stream on Amazon Prime and on YouTube. Tommy takes a look at the 2024 Iowa Caucuses and their impact on the 2024 presidential race, asking the all-important question — does this even matter anymore? With Trump leading every poll, it can feel like the first-in-the-nation vote is nothing more than a battle for second place. But the Des Moines Register's Brianne Pfannenstiel, Iowa State University pollster Dave Peterson, and GOP insider David Kochel make the case for how Iowa could still shape the Republican primary. Our featured interview tonight is with Dave Peterson. Dave is Brian's partner organizing the Las Vegas International Pipe Show. Influenced by his childhood friend's father, he always wanted to be a heavy equipment operator, and that is what he became and worked at his entire life. He started smoking a pipe at 14-years old. This time influenced by Hugh Hefner. He even started with Mixture 79, but he's come a long way since then. Dave is also one of the first members of the Pipes Magazine Forums, having joined in May 2009 when the site was only a few months old, and he is still an active participant. His forum handle is "daveinlax", and no, he does not live in the Los Angeles airport. We are skipping our opening segment for an extended chat with Dave.
That old truism about needing to have money to make money wasn't necessarily coined with college in mind, but unlocking the long-term economic benefits of higher education definitely involves an investment upfront. Amy and Mike invited college finance experts Dave Peterson and Dan Cieniewicz to share insights on how to pay for college. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What sources do you recommend utilizing to pay for college? What do the changes to the FAFSA mean for parents and students? What's the worst advice you have seen regarding scholarships? Does a student need to have perfect grades, test scores, or be a star athlete to win scholarships? Where do you find scholarships? MEET OUR GUEST Dave Peterson, The Scholarship Coach, is the father of a rising college junior who, to date, has won over $80,000 in scholarships. Because of his son's success with scholarships, people started asking him for advice on how their children could win scholarships. These questions prompted Dave to write the book DEBT-FREE COLLEGE: Proven Strategies for Winning Scholarships and Other Tools to Help You Avoid Student Loan Debt. Dave shares a new scholarship opportunity every day on his podcast and Substack called "Your Daily Scholarship." He provides one-on-one coaching for students and families to help them find and win scholarships to achieve their debt-free college dreams. Dave previously appeared on this podcast in episode 496 to share 12 MUST-SEE SCHOLARSHIPS. Find Dave at dave@nodebtcollege.com. Dan Cieniewicz works with parents of teenage children as they find themselves in a position to strategize to pay for college while also staying on track for retirement. Dan's goal when working with clients is to explain the complexities of the financial aid & college application process and to strategize to make sure that both parents and children are set up for long-term success. Dan was born & raised in Berks County. He attended Albright College, majoring in Economics & Political Science and played on the football team. Dan has obtained the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation. Find Dan at www.thecollegedude.com. In the episode our host Preethy Padmanabhan had an insightful discussion on the book Play Bigger with Maryanne Morrow, Chairman, Founder and CEO of 9th Gear. Maryanne shared how she is creating a new category within the Fintech space. "Play Bigger" is a business book by Al Ramadan, Dave Peterson, Christopher Lochhead, and Kevin Maney that explores the concept of category design as a strategic approach for companies to achieve long-term success. The book argues that companies should aim to create and dominate their own product category rather than competing within existing ones. It emphasizes the importance of defining a unique and compelling category narrative that sets a company apart in the market. The authors provide numerous case studies and real-world examples of companies that successfully implemented category design, such as Uber and Salesforce, to illustrate their principles. Ultimately, "Play Bigger" offers a strategic framework for businesses to become category kings and disrupt their industries.

Welcome to Episode 50 of MixMasters!! Thank you to every single person who has downloaded, listened, subscribed, and commented on this series - I truly appreciate it! This episode is unusual as it features not one, but two separate guests. In part one, Dave Peterson (FOH, TM, Monitors) joins to provide an update from Upheaval Festival and to share details about SoundEFX's newest gear additions (including one very large piece of gear). Part two features Steve Litscher (FOH, TM, Monitors). What?! Yep, that's right. I sit down with Dave to tell some of my story. I've received a bunch of e-mail, messages and comments asking about my history, as well as a number of other questions, so I figured it was time to answer some of them on the podcast. I give a number of shoutouts to friends and colleagues; sorry if I missed anyone along the way - I'm not used to chatting so much.I hope you enjoy this milestone episode; it's longer than usual and it probably sounds quite different as we used some different gear (including a new mastering suite in Logic, which truth be told, I'm not thrilled about)... and we've been away from our mics for a few months. I also didn't edit this episode as heavily as I normally would, so you'll hear more pauses, more "ums" and "ahhs" but the conversation felt so natural that I didn't want to cause any disruption by editing. Thanks again for your continued support, kind words, and time. I'm absolutely floored that people listen to this podcast, and I'm grateful for every one of you. Join me on the Fast Track to Grant Writer: www.teresahuff.com/vip The Link Between Competition and a Scarcity Mindset Competition is at the heart of every grant application, and a scarcity mindset can come from a position of competition. Many nonprofits work on a very limited budget, so the struggle with a scarcity mindset is common. After all, you wouldn't be applying for grants if you already had the money, right? Nonprofits applying for the same grant are likely providing parallel services to a similar demographic, so the unfortunate reality is that organizations fighting for the same cause are competing with one another for funds and therefore, feeding the sector-wide scarcity mindset. In today's podcast, retired Army Colonel Dr. Vincent Lindenmeyer helps us think creatively to work collaboratively with otherwise competing organizations so both teams can overcome the scarcity mindset and get more done. What Collaboration and Grant Funding Look Like Together During his 26 years in the US Army, Vince specialized in engineering, logistics management, and strategic studies, so he knows what creative collaboration looks like. He now applies his knowledge and experience to the nonprofit sector. As principal of Beacon 4sight Group, Vince helps women, veterans, minorities, persons with disabilities, and the formerly incarcerated start nonprofits and businesses to create economic growth for equality and justice. Many of Vince's clients begin with little more than a dream, but he helps them get their nonprofit started in 90 days. He knows the power of creative collaboration to overcome scarcity. Like-minded organizations need to share resources, time, and talent to create in-kind partnerships based on trading complimentary skills and backgrounds. 7 Empowering Benefits of Working Collaboratively Wonderful things can happen when organizations work together: Extra personnel Everyone gets more done when you have more hands on deck working toward the same goals. Share tips and tricks Share knowledge to solve problems and work more efficiently. Stronger bottom line Struggling nonprofits become stronger by giving and receiving resources and expertise. Larger network Collaboration breeds collaboration, so when you partner with an organization, you will also get to work with their connections. Stay in your lane Collaboration means sharing complementary skills to boost each other's weaknesses so you can focus on your strengths. Increased visibility and community awareness When you get more done together, both organizations get a piece of the spotlight to bring awareness to both your cause and your brand. Celebrate your wins together Collaboration means having more to celebrate and more people to celebrate with! If we truly want to make things better and improve our mission, then we have to cooperate. It's not about us. It's not about the scarcity. It's so much more. We have to work together. We have to ask ourselves how we can give back to the community and improve each other's mission, whether or not it comes back directly to us. To read today's full episode: 7 Reasons Working Collaboratively Helps Your Team Get More Done To watch and share my TEDx Talk, The Real ROI of Grant Writing. Challenge Question: Where do you see a scarcity in your nonprofit? Can you identify another organization with whom to collaborate to turn the scarcity into abundance? Everybody recognizes that four or more years of college costs a lot of money, but few know exactly how much will be required or where they'll be finding that money. Even worse, far too few applicants realize how many scholarships are available to industrious students. Amy and Mike invited scholarship expert Dave Peterson to share 12 must-see scholarships. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What elements make a scholarship worth looking at? What makes replicability so valuable in the scholarship process? Which specific scholarships should all applicants consider? What connects all of these scholarships? What can future applicants do to prepare for scholarship success? Intro Dave Peterson CEO and Founder of No Debt College, Dave is the father of a current college sophomore who, to date, has won over $80,000 in scholarship. And that amount keeps increasing. Dave now uses the same methodology the he developed for his son to coach other students to find and win scholarships so that they can achieve their own debt-free college dreams. My mission is to help students earn a debt-free college degree and to help parents send their kids to college while still keeping their life savings intact. I do this by coaching students and their families to win multiple scholarships. Top three takeaways It is (almost) never too early to apply for scholarships, and students can continue to win scholarships to pay for college at just about any time in their academic career. Do not wait until your student is a senior in high school to start applying for scholarships. How Dave's mission is to help students earn a debt-free college degree. Want to know the true secret to growing a business? Psst, it's the customers. This week's episode will make your company start caring about its customers. Today's guest is Mark Donnigan, Virtual CMO at Growth Stage Marketing. Listen in as Mark joins host, Casey Cheshire, and shares his hack on building a better relationship with your customers through excellent business strategy. Busted Myths: Companies can have a great strategy and never lose customers. Takeaways: Learn your competitor's tools, then learn their process, and then implement it. It is all about driving more usage and purchase of their solution. It is not actually about selling our products. Just because you hire someone who is good on paper does not mean that they are going to be great. Actions speak louder than words. Get on sales calls and go to sales calls. This will help you learn about your customers and about other businesses. No matter what you have going on with your business. The customers most likely will not care. They only care about what they will get out of it. They only care if it has anything to do with them. Marketing podcasts are a great way to get real-time marketing information. Marketing books are typically made within the year while podcasts are made almost every week. Diversity of thought is required because without it, we would fail. We would not execute meetings well it will lead to no business impact. It's more important to get any information to your customers. Make it readily available, and make it easily accessible for your customer. Quote of the Show: “The customer does not care about us. They only care about them.” (11:28) Book Recommendations: Play Bigger by Al Ramadan, Dave Peterson, Christopher Lochhead, and Kevin Maney Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/markdonnigan/ Website: https://growthstage.marketing/ Podcast: https://www.owltail.com/people/ORNFP-mark-donnigan/appearances Company Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWivu309kk1u1P9jrcv3jLA Ways to Tune In: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-hard-corps-marketing-show/id1338838763 Amazon Music/Audible: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/37228621-2f9c-4905-a223-1844effb49dd Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1vVLpNI1LssMTiL6Kdsamn Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-hard-corps-marketing-show Google Podcasts: https://play.google.com/music/m/Im7mytmu2wa2mekhoeixlja5hpe?t=The_Hard_Corps_Marketing_Show YouTube: https://youtu.be/5MrbOivXAz8

I'm in the middle of rebranding my business. There are so many things I can do, so many things I want to do, yet I also want my brand positioning to be clear and attractive. I want others to love my brand as much as I do. As I'm working on this, I see a cartoon by Gaping Void that says, “Don't be the best in the world at what you do. Be the only person in the world at what you do.” Seeing that makes everything click. I think, “Yes! That describes my work which is unique in so many ways.” I already kind of am the only person doing what I do. And I really want to highlight that… but I need help. So my husband Mark, who I've grabbed in my excitement, says to me, “We gotta talk to Peter. This is his zone of genius.” That first conversation with Peter changes everything. What he does is revolutionary in so many ways. And I've brought him onto the show today to discuss exactly what it is that he does and how he helps redefine business. If you want to know: What is category design, how does it help you understand your audience better, and what is the most common challenge when people start approaching business with this new way of thinking? How do you use it to attract potential customers or clients? And how did a customer survey company use category design and find itself worth several billion dollars more than competitors like Survey Monkey? Get a pen and your replay button ready because this episode is chock full of priceless lessons you'll want to listen to again and again! What you will learn in this episode: How to rethink your business positioning and make it unique How POV storytelling in marketing messages differs from conventional marketing How to use category design to spark intrigue in your business Who is Peter? As a graduate of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Peter Goldie has spent the past decade as an angel investor and used his knack for creating and launching market-dominating products to advise on business, strategy, and marketing. He honed his marketing expertise while in Brand Management at Procter & Gamble where he built revenue for brands such as Crisco, Pringles, and Ivory. Now his firm advises companies on the emerging concept of category design for business. In addition, Peter founded two startups and has held several operational roles at different companies over the years. He served as GM and SVP at the top digital e-commerce agency Fluid and was the GM and VP at Macromedia where he helped make Flash the most distributed software worldwide. He also took on the position of GM at Alias/Wavefront where he assisted in the creation of the Computer-Aided Industrial Design (CAID) category and the launching of the world's leading 3D animation product, Maya (which won an Oscar for scientific and technical achievement).
