SEASONS OF THE SOUL: 38 LYRIC POEMS by Beverley ManleyNamed Moonflower, "one who blooms in the darkness," by an Acoma Pueblo tribal elder in the 1960s, Manley's 38 poems burst forth with love, resiliency, and sheer joy. Playful, yet poignant, the author's skill with the written word pulls you in and holds you until the very end.Beverley Manley lives in the small desert town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. A childhood rooted in the Great Depression and the Jim Crow South could have defined and held her. But instead, she chose love, light, adventure and freedom. Her wanderlust led her to San Francisco during the 1960s, where her true spirit was finally embraced. Deciding on a career in accounting, her off-hours were filled with music, art, and museums. Buddhism continues to ground her spiritually, and she has a deep passion for the plight of Indigenous peoples. She has written a couple books on poetry, with the second one in collaboration with Mark Matousek (the internationally best-selling author of When You're Falling, Dive and The Boy He Left Behind) serving as her editor.https://www.amazon.com/dp/1667886169?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_WVZXNAHHMR98G868B0MS_1https://www.readersmagnet.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/1424bmrm.mp3

WHEN YOU'RE FALLING, DIVE with MARK MATOUSEK “There seems to be an inexplicable link to facing our own impermanence and awakening spiritually… Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going? What's the purpose of all this? Until we are shaken out of the status quo, we don't ordinarily ask those questions voluntarily. I like to say that most people are dragged kicking and screaming onto the spiritual path. And I really think that that's true.“ [7:14] – author Mark Matousek “Gratitude is the antidote to self-pity. You can't feel both at the same time.” [15:41] – author Mark Matousek *********************************************** SUPPORT DR. Today we talk with Mark Matousek, a bestselling author, teacher, and speaker whose work focuses on personal awakening and creative excellence through transformational writing and self-inquiry. Mark is the award-winning author of seven books, including “Sex Death Enlightenment: A True Story”. His articles have appeared in The New Yorker and O: The Oprah Magazine. His book, “When You're Falling, Dive: Lessons in the Art of Living” was just re-released. Listen in to hear how Mark integrates being in the world, being in relationships, and making a living, without compromising his values and what matters to him most. Topics We Discuss: [0:20] Amy introduces Mark Matousek. [3:40] Mark describes how he was a spiritual seeker starting in childhood. How unanswered questions and unaddressed suffering, followed by a 5-years-to-live diagnosis accelerated his spiritual growth. [6:44] Mark feels that spiritual unfolding is linked to existential crisis. [8:28] Mark discusses spiritual bypassing – running from vs. running into whatever ongoing crisis you are experiencing. Seeking spirituality outside of yourself vs. finding answers within. [10:18] Mark integrated his profoundly spiritual experiences. Contrary to his earlier belief that spiritual awakening meant not feeling pain, he learned that the more he evolved, the more deeply he felt both joy and pain. [14:33] The most common story people tell themselves to keep them spiritually stuck is the victim story: that life is happening TO them. [16:07] Gratitude is the antidote to self-pity. But what if someone is NOT glad to be here, to be alive? [17:54] Mark's process of writing as a self-examination tool. How truth telling, including the truth about the messiness of being human, changes the story we tell ourselves and other people. [19:40] Mark's favorite lesson from the book: if you're willing to change and let go of what has been, then it's possible to be healed and move forward within any situation. [22:00] The importance of experiencing awe and wonder. Fall colors. Sunrise. Sunset. [27:09] What his teacher's question, “Do you go through the mountain or around the mountain?” means to Mark. The answer is often anti-Western culture. [29:56] Humanity's relationship with Mother Earth. The planet will be fine. Humanity's future is what is uncertain. [34:48] Everyday experiences are material for self-inquiry. These spiritual practices take you to the core of what you care about. All of our choices and thoughts can raise consciousness, and raise awareness. [37:00] Amy's speed round questions: What is spirituality? What is something people don't know about you? What is one thing you're looking forward to right now? What's one thing you're deeply grateful for? What book is on your nightstand? What is your favorite spiritual or healing practice? What do you believe happens when we die? What is the most spiritually transformative experience of your life? FOLLOW MARK MATOUSEK: Find Mark and his interactive Seeker's Forum on his website. The Art of Living: Mark Matousek Being alive is a risky business. No matter who you are, where you live, or how much privilege you enjoy, insecurity is the price tag on human existence, with danger, loss, and suffering close at hand even in the best of times. Science is finally catching up to what sages have been saying forever. Thanks to recent breakthroughs in MRI technology, neurologists are now able—for the first time in history—to observe the human brain in the act of feeling. This has revealed a phenomenon known as neuro- plasticity, which in turn has revolutionized how we think about personal change. Mark Matousek is an award-winning author of two memoirs, Sex Death Enlightenment: A True Story (an international bestseller) and The Boy He Left Behind: A Man's Search For His Lost Father, as well as When You're Falling, Dive: Lessons in the Art of Living, Ethical Wisdom: The Search for a Moral Life, and Mother of the Unseen World. A MacDowell Fellow and former editor at Interview Magazine, he has contributed to numerous anthologies and publications, including The New Yorker, O: The Oprah Magazine (contributing editor), Harper's Bazaar, Yoga Journal, Tricycle: The Buddhist Review, and The Saturday Evening Post, and is a columnist for Psychology Today. A popular speaker and teacher, he offers courses in creativity and spiritual growth in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Europe, based on his book, Writing To Awaken: A Journey of Truth, Transformation, and Self-Discovery. Sex Death Enlightenment: Mark Matousek It's hard to know when you're having a breakdown in New York City. The symptoms of living here, succeeding here, and losing your mind here are almost identical." So begins Matousek's 1996 breakout memoir about leaving a fast-track publishing life (working for pop artist Andy Warhol at Interview Magazine) and hitting the dharma trail in search of a meaningful life and spiritual wisdom. Hailed by Publisher's Weekly as "brave, beautiful, and brilliantly observed," Sex Death Enlightenment became an international best seller (published in 10 countries). Like Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat Pray Love and Paul Monette in Borrowed Time, Matousek takes the reader on an insightful, rollicking search for answers to life's deepest questions in this landmark memoir. “An extraordinarily articulate chronicle of how the sickness of our time can spawn spiritual awakening and compassion.” Ram Dass, author of Be Here Now and Grist For the Mill “Brave, beautiful and brilliantly observed.” Publishers Weekly Mark Matousek is an award-winning author of two memoirs, Sex Death Enlightenment: A True Story (an international bestseller) and The Boy He Left Behind: A Man's Search For His Lost Father, as well as When You're Falling, Dive: Lessons in the Art of Living, Ethical Wisdom: The Search for a Moral Life, and Mother of the Unseen World. "The power of [The fight between Hrao and Hakka] is unprecedented in New Century, both in terms of the raw clashing of immense forces from these beast warriors, and emotionall in terms of the personal investment that you can understand and feel coming from the two characters involved... it's frantic but clearly conveyed by the narrative taking you through each movement. And by the end of it, you feel exhauted right along Hrao." Here is part 1 of nearly 4 hours of discussion on Chapters 11-15 of Tiger's Eye. Dig in, folks. Heavy topics incoming, including death of a child and an abusive, gaslighting father. We start with a comprehensive discussion of several of the elements of Chapter 11. From confrontation, to fight scene dynamics, to musical contributions to this part of the audiodrama and New Century in general. But eventually, we have to have the larger discussion on the revelations of Hrao's past tragedy, and how it reflects and explains everything that has happened thus far. Toby also shows some insights into how Alex uses music and leitmotifs in Tiger's Eye, abe to identify certain instruments or musical bits as belonging to Miguel or the Gagaku. And then we get into Miguel. Our young hero and the journey that he has been on both before and after going Through The Wind Door(tm). Dissecting his emotional journey, and the dark influence of his father on it. His most recent book is Mother of the Unseen World: The Mystery of Mother Meera (Random House). In this conversation, Mark and I explored the topic of writing for self enquiry. Mark teaches a method of using writing as a path for transformation, we delved into how and why it works and then Mark gave some practical suggestions to get you, the listener started. I found this an incredibly insightful episode and I've personally adopted Mark's method since recording the show. The changes I've noticed in that short times have been unbelievable - more awareness of my shadows and surprisingly to me, more freedom to write and share my truth publicly too. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: Writing as self enquiry works because it gives us distance and perspective on our thoughts, just like any forms of self enquiry, it's just easier to see something when it's out of your mind and written down. Don't write for an audience, don't worry about perfection, or grammar. Just write to the question, for yourself. Give yourself permission not to do anything with your answers that come up in the writing. The practice is about asking and answering the questions, not necessarily taking action. Write every day, for around 15 mins and then review a day or two later. Don't edit unless it's to deepen on something. Ask the questions that matter most to you. Here's a couple that Mark mentioned on the show: Take five minutes to write about a story you tell yourself on a regular basis that you know isn't true. Take five minutes to write about what you would do if you were free (whatever freedom means to you).
