In our season finale, Adam and Nate celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of The Simpsons' most famous season finales, “Who Shot Mr. Burns? Part One” (S6E25). To complement Mr. Burns's fiendish scheme to block out the sun, we paired it with Goldfinger (1964), the James Bond movie that invented much of the formula that every later movie in the series either imitates or plays against. Also in this episode:• The brassy music of John Barry and Shirley Bassey that became synonymous with espionage and gadgetry• What set pieces hold up best, and why is the correct answer the industrial laser scene?•The imperceptible craft that pulls together the behind-the-scenes patchwork of this movie• Can James Bond survive his latest encounter with an ambitious bald billionaire?• Plus, check out our show notes for a complete list of Simpsons references, double feature suggestions, and further reading.Springfield Googolplex will return in September 2025 with the thrilling conclusion to “Who Shot Mr. Burns?” (S7E1), alongside a mystery movie pairing. In the meantime, we will be taking a break to produce our next season, but keep an eye out for a few very special summer episodes. For more Simpsons movie parody content, check out SpringfieldGoogolplex.com, or follow us @simpsonsfilmpod on Instagram, Bluesky, TikTok, YouTube, and Letterboxd. What more can be said about Jaws (1975)? For the 50th anniversary of the original summer blockbuster, we invited filmmaker and podcaster Devan Scott to help us unpack how it quietly became one of the most referenced movies in the classic years of The Simpsons. Also in this episode:• The many parodies of Quint and his iconic introduction, including our Simpsons double feature, “The Joy of Sect” (S9E13)• A deep dive on the dolly zoom, from Hitchcock to Spielberg to The Simpsons• How Amity provides a template for the small-town politics of Springfield• Why does The Simpsons leave the climax of this movie untouched by parodies?• Plus, check out our show notes for a complete list of Simpsons references, double feature suggestions, and further readingNext time, for our season finale, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of the most memorable Simpsons finales of all time, “Who Shot Mr. Burns? Part One” (S6E25) and its parody of Goldfinger (1964).For more of Devan Scott's film content, check out the complete podcast How Would Lubitsch Do It? and his video essays on YouTube, or follow him on Bluesky, Letterboxd, and Instagram. David Viscott was an American psychiatrist, author, and media personality who founded the Viscott Center for Natural Therapy in Beverly Hills, Newport Beach and Pasadena, California. In 1980 Viscott began presenting his own full-time show on talk radio, and was notably one of the first psychiatrists to do so. He screened telephone calls and gave considerable amount of free psychological counselling to his on-air "patients."In 1987 Viscott briefly had his own live syndicated TV show, Getting in Touch with Dr. David Viscott, providing much the same service as his radio show. In fact, the shows ran concurrently. In the early 1990s he had a weekly call-in therapy television program on KNBC in Los Angeles early Sunday morning after Saturday Night Live, titled Night Talk with Dr. David Viscott. His autobiography, The Making of a Psychiatrist, was a best-seller, a Book of the Month Club Main Selection, and nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. In the television show The Simpsons, the character Dr. Marvin Monroe's voice was based on Viscott. The character's retirement was marked by the broadcast of a Dr. Marvin Monroe Memorial Hospital over Lou's walkie-talkie in "Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part Two)". Since then, several references to Monroe being dead have been made: a glimpse of his gravestone in "Alone Again, Natura-Diddily", a Dr. Marvin Monroe Memorial Gymnasium seen in "Bye Bye Nerdie".Notable books by ViscottThe Making of a Psychiatrist See The Viscott MethodRiskingI Love You, Let's Work It OutThe Language of FeelingsEmotional Resilience Finding Your Strength in Difficult TimesEmotionally FreeHow to Live with Another PersonFeel FreeWinningTaking Care of BusinessWhat Every Kid Should KnowLabyrinth of Silence

On today's episode, I talk to TV writer Bill Oakley. Originally from Union Bridge, Maryland, Bill attended Harvard where he spent most of his time writing for the Harvard Lampoon. After graduating, Bill took on a number of different jobs until he and his longtime friend and writing partner Josh Weinstein were eventually hired to work on The Simpsons. Together, the two wrote some of the most classic episodes of the show including "Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadasssss Song", "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" and "22 Short Films About Springfield", and were subsequently promoted to executive producer and showrunner during the seventh and eighth seasons. Since then, Bill co-created Mission Hill, wrote for Futurama, Portlandia and Disenchanted, and currently is the showrunner for the delightful HBO Max series Close Enough!
