SEASON 3 EPISODE 94: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump and Musk are, at this moment, overthrowing our form of government. And this is how to stop them: Yell. Keep yelling. Government data about religious charities – private, if not necessarily secret – has wound up in the hands of Mike Flynn, the foreign asset, General Scumbag – and he’s posted it online, and mocked the Lutheran Church in doing so. Musk’s hatchet-men are literally inside the government right now demanding leaders of the U.S. Agency for International Development turn over classified documents inside restricted areas and those that have refused have been placed on leave. Trump has started a trade war with our closest allies just to have somebody for his morons to hate. Quote: “It’s a coup. Elon Musk is running a palace coup. Musk is taking classified information. Musk has taken YOUR social security number. Everybody involved should be arrested, by local DA’s if that’s all we can do, and denied bail,” unquote. A Democratic Senator, Representative, Governor, Mayor, needs to stand in front of microphones today and say that today and say that THAT BLUNTLY today. And, quote: “Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump might as well have killed those teenaged skaters on American 5342 themselves. The DC crash was their fault. Period.” Some OTHER Democratic leader, maybe the head of the Democratic National Committee, Ken Martin, elected Saturday, needs to say that. As it is, Martin says: “We’re taking the gloves off. I’m always viewed my role as a chair of the Democratic Party to take the low road, so my candidates and elected officials can take the high road. Meaning, I’m going to throw a punch.”Good. Start swinging. Because the FIRST step towards stopping wrong is by publicly and loudly yelling, THIS is wrong. A Minnesota colleague described the new DNC Chair: “Ken will cut you if he has to.” I’ll bring the metaphorical Ginsu set because right now where we actually ARE is: the nominal leading Democratic office-holder is Chuck Schumer and as Trump and Musk began to ransack your social security number and starting trade wars with our literally closest allies, Chuck Schumer’s social media Saturday afternoon was: “You’re worried about tomato prices…” and ten minutes later “You’re watching the Super Bowl…wait’ll Trump’s tariffs raise your guacamole and beer prices.” Useless. I need a thousand Ken Martins, throwing punches and metaphorically cutting a MAG-itch. I need them saying this is a coup, we will stop it, it will take time, we will beat them and jail them because bottom line is they are lazy and they leave half their lives to chance – just look at their haircuts. B-Block (30:00) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: CBS, NPR, New York Times, Politico, NBC all tried to kiss Trump's ring. He just hurt them anyway. And this is not a joke: Semafor is hosting a "National Summit" on how to restore confidence in media. The speakers are Megyn Kelly, the idiot running CNN, the other idiot running NBC, and the idiot running The New York Times. No - seriously. B-Block (37:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Chuck Todd gets scooped on his own firing. Chris Licht finally gets a new job. Free-lance. Temp. At scale. And Neto-Baby Peter Doocy asks Softball Scholarship Recipient Karoline Leavitt about DEI. Also you doubted she called Hitler "Hilter?" I'll show you. C-Block (47:00) SPORTSBALL CENTER TONIGHT: A basketball trade deal so bad it must have been ordered by Trump. How many Petterssons? ALL the Petterssons. And for the last damn time: hockey's "Original 6?" They aren't original, and there aren't six of them.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 139: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump 3rd Party stalking horse and QAnon Party would-be spoiler RFK Junior has confirmed his top two choices for Vice President are: New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and wrestling, government, and TV washout Jesse Ventura. But how could you be New York Jets Quarterback Aaron Rodgers AND Vice President Aaron Rodgers at the same time? That's the easy part! Based on 2023 being an NFL quarterback would only take about three and a half minutes out of his Vice Presidential year: "Now they're going to swear in the Vice Presi... OHHHH HE'S TORN HIS ACHILLES WHILE TRYING TO STAND UP." Back-up Ventura is still insisting he was fired by MSNBC in November 2003 because he opposed the war in Iraq. Yeah, I started on MSNBC in February 2003 and I outlasted George W. Bush. I'll tell you the real story of why MSNBC fired him (Jesse may not even know it). (7:02) SPECIAL COMMENT II: Robert K. Hur, the Biden "Special Counsel" and Trump operative named to the job by the impossibly inadequate Merrick Garland, was already DOA at yesterday's House "Biden Age Plot" Committee Hearing before it started. Republicans are enraged because the transcript of Hur's interview with President Biden they subpoenaed was also released to the taxpayers who paid for it. To the surprise (and more importantly the rage) of every Democrat, nearly every reporter, and even some Democrats, it showed that Hur COMPLETELY FABRICATED THE ENTIRE "BIDEN COULDN'T REMEMBER WHEN HIS SON DIED" saga. The transcript proved Hur a liar in that case, and time after time. Honestly, he should've told the car service driver to go right past the Rayburn Building and just take him to Dulles Airport for a trip anywhere else in the world. Hey, maybe he can be RFK Jr's Vice President. Or get a sub host job at NewsMax! B-Block (27:00) We didn't win, it's all rigged (28:32) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: North Carolina Republicans have nominated as the State Superintendent of Schools, a woman named Michele Morrow who believes the QAnon delusion that Jim Carrey keeps himself looking young by drinking the blood of children (wait - Jim Carrey looks YOUNG?). They've topped that in Arizona where both houses of the legislature have approved a bill that lets university students appeal their grades if they're conservative but the professor is liberal. And best of all, South Dakota governor Kristi Noem is now doing infomercials for a Cosmetic Dentist in Texas. Her last advertising idea, you may recall, was SD's anti-meth program: "Meth - We're On It!" C-Block (38:51) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Well, no, the Political Podcast of the Year award we didn't win wasn't rigged. But 35 years ago the local NBC station figured out how to game the local news Emmy awards - part of the reason I'm 0-forever in Emmys. So it's a good time to tell you that saga.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Everyone has a story to tell. How they got from point to point, the struggles they endured along the way, the person they started as and where they stand now, everyone has a story. In many cases, actors, the ones who tend to bring us so much joy have something incredible behind them. What makes it even more compelling is when they use their story to help others live a richer, fuller life. “There was a time in my life where I was super proud and then, people tell you that you're bragging.” – Heather, (1:37) My guest today is the one and only Heather Brooker. She's an actor, comedian, and journalist, but most of all, she's an overcomer and a woman with an amazing story. She's the founder of the Motherhood in Hollywood podcast and she graciously shares her life experiences to help others navigate the challenges that fall into their path. Heather grew up in an unconventional atmosphere, but her resilience and ability to strategically lever her surroundings helped fuel the success she currently dwells in. “It feels a bit unfair to talk about her (mother) struggles in detail because she's still alive and we have a really strained relationship.” – Heather, (12:48) Everyone has a story, and we all have the ability to impact and play a role in them. Pull up a chair and hear the empowering message from Heather Brooker as she shares things she's learned along the way that will help you conquer whatever is keeping you from living your best life! “You love your children obviously, but then when you get to see your own child, being a parent and going through all the things you felt as a parent, and how they navigate it, there's a sense of pride.” – Heather, (21:43) “We're living in a different world right now where people have access to so much information online and they're all sharing it on TikTok and social media.” – Heather, (40:30) In this episode: (2:00) – Heather expresses her happiness with the career she has built thus far. (5:35) – Heather reveals that she doesn't allow her daughter to have access to social media. (7:23) – Navigating technology in the Brooker household. (10:25) – Surviving the reality of parenting herself. (10:49) – Heather opens up about hiding the struggles at home. (11:10) – How the death of her stepfather impacted the household. (14:04) – Growing up, Heather did whatever she had to do to create some semblance of normalcy. (15:04) – Looking back over life and realizing the way she lived was far from normal. (16:47) – Friends are great escape mechanisms. (17:34) – Teaching her daughter to navigate being an only child. (18:49) – The topic of only children and how they're often misunderstood. (24:00) – Monitoring her daughter when she's on the set. (25:46) – Acting, not journalism was the goal, but her mom wanted her to be an engineer. (29:26) – She loves the storytelling aspect of journalism, but it can be heavy at times. (30:44) – Growing up in trauma helped make her a better journalist. (33:15) – Acting or standup, which is her favorite? (35:20) – The ownership element of standup comedy. (35:39) – Comics live in a bubble. (37:40) – Heather says journalism numbs her but also helped her become more of a critic. (38:40) – Juggling fairness and impartiality as a comic. (40:47) – Acting and comedy are all about storytelling. (41:37) – Talking about body positivity. (44:00) – Heather encourages and remains an advocate for all bodies in the arts. (45:20) – Discussing plus-sized women in acting. (46:20) – Heather is resilient enough to get through the weight criticisms but knows everyone isn't. (47:23) – Don't be afraid to ask for the seatbelt extender. (50:00) – Auditioning for the role of Fat Pam. (52:08) – It's always open season for fat people, especially fat women. (53:10) – Fat shaming impacts men in Hollywood too. (57:40) – Advice for those who want to be actors or comedians. Our Guest Many years ago, Heather Brooker said goodbye to Oklahoma to follow her dreams in Hollywood! Since then, she's been hovering on the cusp of stardom waiting for her closeup. During that time, she racked up a couple of Emmy Awards as a journalist, comedian, and TV host. She also created the Webby Award-winning podcast, Motherhood in Hollywood. She's appeared in over 40 films and TV shows including “Grey's Anatomy”, “Fresh Off The Boat”, “The Mindy Project” and many more. It should also be noted that Heather was in the unprecedented role of digital entertainment reporter for KNBC in Los Angeles, where she regularly interviewed celebrities and other luminaries in Hollywood. Phil and Ted welcome TV weatherman and stand-up comic, Fritz Coleman and veteran radio producer and documentarian Louise Palanker. Fritz was a fixture on Los Angeles' KNBC-TV for 39 years and Louise co-founded Premiere Radio Networks. Together, they host the MEDIA PATH PODCAST, a conversational show that looks at what has defined media and culture for the past half-century. Click now for a fun and wide-ranging conversation with four very curious people.
Description: In this episode, I am speaking with the legendary Fritz Coleman who went from being the weathercaster for NBC in Los Angeles from 1982 to 2020 to co-hosting Media Path Podcast with Louise Palanker in 2020. Fritz has an inspiring story to tell that you need to hear. This is from his Wikipedia page: After growing up in Radnor, Pennsylvania, he attended Salem University in West Virginia and Temple University in Philadelphia where he studied radio, television, and film. Like many popular weather anchors, he serves as a reporter instead of a meteorologist since he doesn't have a degree in meteorology. He worked as a comedian and disc jockey for several years and as radio personality "Jay Fredericks" at WBEN and later WKBW in Buffalo, New York. He left Buffalo for Los Angeles in 1980 to work as a stand-up comic. In 1982, he began work as a weekend weatherman at KNBC and became the weekday weatherman in 1984. He also hosted or appeared on a number of other KNBC shows, such as "It's Fritz" (1988-1990) and "What a Week" (1990 – 1991). He has written and performed two one-man theater acts, titled The Reception and It's Me! Dad! He received the 2004 EMA Community Service Award for his involvement with KNBC's 4 Our Planet, a children's program. He appeared in a supporting role in one of Raymond Burr's last Perry Mason television films, The Case of the Telltale Talk Show Host, in 1993. He received a "thanks" credit on the film Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie, an "alternate film" companion to Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. From 2009 to 2011, Coleman also did the weekday weather (in addition to KNBC) for San Diego's NBC affiliate, KNSD. On June 17, 2020, Coleman announced that he would retire on Friday, June 26 after almost 40 years at KNBC. I think you will find Fritz's story quite entertaining and more importantly inspiring. EPISODE 160: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:41) SPECIAL COMMENT: The Stormy Daniels Grand Jury reconvenes at mid-day Thursday amid a reporting consensus that one last witness will be heard, to rebut the pro-Trump attorney Robert Costello who appeared Monday. But nobody is certain if that will be a Michael Cohen redux or an entirely new witness (CNN even threw out the name Stormy Daniels). So far Costello's main contributions have been the standard Trump hyperbole about "600 pages of evidence the DA has hidden" (almost none of which seems to have any relevance to the Daniels payoff) and one of the great malapropisms of the Trump era. Costello insists he "threw a wrench into their monkey works" - which isn't a thing. The Grand Jury is not expected to do anything but hear testimony so an indictment would seem to shift to next week. But so far everything that seemed logical has proved not to be the case. Happily, the Special Counsel's push to erase Attorney-Client privilege for Trump lawyer Evan Corcoran seems to be clarifying nicely. Trump lost his appeal, seems out of position to go further up the food chain. which means that Corcoran will have to answer six lines of questioning, all of which mainlines back to whether Trump knew that the "certification document" Corcoran wrote and Christina Bobb signed last spring was going to falsely declare that Trump had returned all the Classified Documents he stole. THIS prosecution remains on course and on schedule - unless somebody throws... a monkey into the wrench works. B-Block (15:23) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Ted Cruz and the others who insisted DirecTV was censoring NewsMax when it was actually about money, now STILL insist it was censorship even after a dollar compromise has been reached. MSNBC follows CNN in a sudden lurch to the right as Ari Melber stands up for absolutely nothing and "welcomes" John Kasich as a paid contributor. And the Michigan GOP gets a new "Possession can be transmitted by Sex With Demons" chair and a month later they're tweeting memes of the wedding rings of thousands of Holocaust victims. (21:27) IN SPORTS: Sports Illustrated declares that local sportscasters - once gods in human form - are now dead. Not only did I used to be one of them but I wrote a piece predicting this day...in 1992! C-Block (34:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Speaking of local sportscasting: the greatest scoop I ever got while doing it was one where my only real effort was answering the phone from tipsters half a dozen times. The tale of breaking the Wayne Gretzky Trade.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Larry and Mike talk with an LA icon! Fritz Coleman was the premier weatherman in LA at KNBC for 40 years while also doing award-winning charity work and stand-up comedy! He's now got his own podcast and is busier than ever on the comedy circuit! Fritz shares his advice for staying busy, curious, and passionate after retirement!
Hosted by Fritz Coleman and Louise Palanker, Media Path takes you along on a scenic tour through books, movies, TV, podcasts and music related to a given topic of captivation. We are exploring entertainment, politics, history, true crime, world events and all of their intriguing intersections. Go beyond binging with Media Path. “And now, here's Fritz Coleman with the weather.” For nearly four decades, Los Angelenos came to know and love Fritz Coleman through his gig as the weather reporter on KNBC, where his affable demeanor (honed in his early years of stand-up comedy) made him a staple of local news. But when he retired from his weather gig two years ago, Coleman knew he wasn't done working. “That 11 o'clock news kept me from a lot of things,” he recalls. “Now I could do all those things that massage my soul, be curious more, and discover more.” That's the impetus behind MEDIA PATH PODCAST, co-hosted by Fritz and Louise Palanker, veteran radio producer and documentarian. With 100 episodes released so far, MEDIA PATH is a look back at what has defined our media for the past half-century. With guests as eclectic as Congressional leader Adam Schiff, television legend Henry Winkler, Grammy winning songwriter Diane Warren, and “Double Dare” host Marc Summers, each week is a journey down a new path of remembering, learning, and reevaluating our shared memories and histories. Every show includes discussion of current cultural events and recommendations from the hosts, as well as extended, deep-dive discussions with figures who have had meaningful and memorable impact on the media world we experience. While many of the subjects will be familiar to Baby Boomers and Gen X'ers, the spirit of inquisitiveness, curiosity, and sharing that Fritz and Louise bring to each episode will ring familiar to newer generations who may be hearing about these subjects, people, and stories for the first time. For Louise Palanker, who has been producing radio entertainment for decades and successful podcasts since 2005, that sense of serious and thoughtful discovery and discussion is what drives the podcast: “We can rediscover the things that matter to us and celebrate what we love.” For Coleman, the show is a new way for him to share his passion and curiosity about the world in the same charitable spirit that earned him Congressional recognition as “Humanitarian of the Year” for his work with the American Red Cross. “It's a great release valve of the pent-up energy from forty years of weather reporting,” he says. About Fritz & Louise “And now, here's Fritz Coleman with the weather.” For nearly four decades, Los Angelenos came to know and love Fritz Coleman through his gig as the weather reporter on KNBC, where his affable demeanor (honed in his early years of stand-up comedy) made him a staple of local news. Re-Imagined Radio pays tribute to Candy Matson, a ground-breaking female investigator anthology series broadcast from KNBC in San Francisco, 1949-1951. Candy Matson is significant because it featured a strong female lead character, San Francisco locations and references, gay and Asian characters, provided a compelling alternative to the popular male detective radio genre, and was the best of the popular female detective programs. Candy Matson runs her private investigation business from a penthouse atop Telegraph Hill in San Francisco, California. Sidekicks Rembrandt Watson (eccentric photographer) and Lieutenant Ray Mallard (San Francisco Police detective and love interest) assist as she solves murders and mysteries in her own intelligent and witty style. This Re-Imagined Radio Candy Matson Tribute highlights the first and final episodes, "The Donna Dunham Case" and "Candy's Last Case." Both episodes demonstrate the appeal and power of radio storytelling and how it engages listeners' imaginations. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Airing out of KNBC in San Francisco was a ground-breaking lady detective anthology named Candy Matson. Produced, written and directed by Monty Masters and starring his wife, Natalie Masters, Candy Matson debuted on Saturday June 26th, 1949 at 8:30PM Pacific Time on NBC's west-coast circuit. Natalie was from San Francisco and began her career with the Wayfarers Repertory of the San Francisco Little Theatre Group. The creative couple were locally successful and had nearly fifteen years of experience by 1949. Henry Leff was Police Detective Ray Mallas, with Jack Thomas as Rembrandt Watson. Candy's number was YUkon 3-8309, and each episode began with a telephone call. The Masters' leaned heavily on their prior associations in the Bay Area. Plots were also reliant on the audience's knowledge of local San Francisco. Unfortunately, because NBC was sustaining production costs, they moved the show around frequently. They'd often air a program a day or hours ahead its scheduled air date, apologizing later to the growing body of Candy Matson fans. Candy solved almost ninety cases. The series ran until May 20th, 1951.
