My guest for this episode is Nan McCarry, and she's no exception to the exceptional people I've been fortunate to get to know because of this podcast. Nan is an ethnobotanist by passion and trade, and she has had a focus on the native grapes of North America over the last few years. What we might call “native” grapes, Nan refers to as “crop wild relatives.” She talks about the importance of preserving the biodiverse gene pool contained in these crop wild relative, and the work she has helped with to catalog and inventory these North American vines. One of the most famous incidents demonstrating the importance of the biodiversity contained within crop wild relatives is the rescue of the entire European wine industry from phylloxera. The term “crop wild relatives” of course refers to the genetic ancestors of our current domesticated wine crops. But by the time Nan gets done explaining the process of domestication from an evolutionary perspective, you may begin to think of that term in a different way. You may begin to step away from your human-centric perspective and see yourself as a relative of the grapevines that you tend. This idea was introduced to me, actually, on a podcast called The Land You're On, which I highly recommend. It's a podcast that interviews members of the Onondaga and other nations of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois, Confederacy… the oldest currently functioning democracy on earth, and the inspiration for our current society here in the US and other western democracies. If you've heard of the three sisters in gardening and farming – corn, beans, and squash – this came from the people of the Haudenosaunee. Like strawberries? You can thank these folks for those as well. And in one of the episodes about an incredible living library of seeds, an Onondaga Seedkeeper talks about how her culture sees food as a relative. The crops collaborate with the people who farm them to help each other survive, have sovereignty, and provide for 7 generations to come. If you're going to listen to just one episode from this podcast, let it be this one… I never would have thought that a seed bank could make me cry, but wow. And I began to think about how I could see wine as a relative. What would that mean? How would I work differently with vines? How would I work with fermentations if I took this perspective? Nan and I talk about a presentation she created which is one of the most unique and impactful combinations of science and psychology that I've seen. Nan sees wine, grapevines, and everything from an evolutionary standpoint. And like many of you, and myself, cares deeply about what humans are doing to the environment. Because of this, she partnered with a local organization dedicated to mindfulness – imaginebeingwell.org - to explain the Cosmic Evolution Story and how this helps deal with eco-anxiety. I've definitely experienced eco-anxiety, and I found Nan's presentation to be one of the most helpful things I've ever seen, which actually speaks to me from a scientific perspective that I found refreshing and more compelling than many other things I've seen. We only touch on a small part of her presentation here, but Nan has generously allowed me to post the entire presentation on her episode page at BeyondOrganicWine.com. Also at BeyondOrganicWine.com you'll find a link to Nan's talk about the importance of native grapes, and you can learn more about Nan and her other projects at: Ethnobot.org and on Instagram at @successionalforest Enjoy! Wild grapes are good for nothing. They are sour and inedible. You can't make wine or jelly with them. Birds won't even eat them. The prophet Isaiah declares that God planted God's people to yield the grapes of justice, mercy, peace, and grace. Instead, they became wild grapes, producing nothing but violence, injustice, and cries for God's help. We too receive God's richest blessings but end up being wild grapes. What are we to do?

But all of that is changing thanks to the work of folks including Erin Rasmussen, winemaker and founder of American Wine Project. This week, we're sitting down with Rasmussen to discuss her journey to the wine world and the impetus for her return to Wisconsin to explore the subtleties of cold-climate winemaking. Along the way we chat about the history of winemaking in the U.S., the challenges Rasmussen faces as she strives to create remarkable wine made with Wisconsin-grown grapes and the innovation that's changing the way folks view winter hardy grapes and their often unique flavor profiles.

Sermon #511 Isaiah delivers to the people of Judah a parable of a vineyard owner who did anything and everything he could to yield a harvest of good grapes, and yet in the end the vine only produced sour berries that could not be used.  The question Isaiah poses is, is it the fault of the vineyard owner that the vine produced bad grapes?  Or is the vine at fault?  He then drops the boom on the people by telling them that God is the vineyard owner and they are the vine.  This prophecy, delivered before the exile of the northern kingdom, was a warning to the people of Judah, and they heeded its call.. for a while, at least.  But what does this prophecy mean for us today?  Are we producing good fruit?  Or are we, like the people of Judah, producing something that looks good and yet is unpalatable? Isaiah 5:1-7 Recorded at Ebenezer UMC on August 14, 2022 S.D.G.

14 August 2022. Yielding Wild Grapes When I was in seminary, I was introduced to Chateau Elan Winery & Resort. This place well above my pay grade Spanning 3,500 acres of rolling hills and wooded forests, Chateau Elan reigns as North Georgia's premier destination resort. A favorite for weekend getaways, corporate retreats, and everything in between, this sprawling property features stunning indoor and outdoor event spaces, multiple restaurants fine dining, professionally staffed golf and tennis clubs, a world-class spa, and more. Oh, it is really nice visiting this place is like going to another country and being wrapped in luxury. When You set in the retirants' they put the napkin in your lap and bring a little bowel to the table to wash your hands before you eat. And oh, how beautiful the grounds and the gardens and vineyards are all around the small villas you sleep in. But who would pay $400 to $800 a night if the wine vineyards were run down and the building were moldy and trash was all over the place. I was watching the local news this week and they were showing this sister that went to the Myrtle beach for a girls retreat and the hotel room they were staying in was run down and she tweeted a video of the walls with the green mildew all over they place, she was so upset she would even take the video down to get her money back. What is, is what should be: in other words what you claim to be is what you should be. Vineyards are aesthetically beautiful places. They have beautiful greenery, well-manicured lawns, and rows of grapevines. They are exquisite and breathtaking. The rolling hills are marvelous to see. In biblical days, a vineyard was a prized possession. They were well taken care of. It took a great deal to take care of them. There was always the nurturing of the grapes or whatever fruit was featured. This tending to the vineyard was all orchestrated for one thing: grapes—fresh, whole, round, perfect grapes. Workers in the vineyard were meticulous and detailed in their care. However, God speaks of grapes gone wild. There is no excuse for wild grapes. They've been watered, given good shade to not be parched by the sun. They've been given the best environment for growth. So, it's not adding up. Why has God's vineyard, a beautiful masterpiece, somehow led to the production of wild grapes? These grapes in this song of Isaiah were not sufficient, healthy, or wholesome for their intended use. This would not be the last time God was disappointed by fruit. You'll recall Jesus while on a journey walked up to a fig tree that looked like it was ready for the picking, but it was not. Jesus was seemingly angry at the tree for false advertising. The tree was presenting an appearance that didn't match its reality. This too was a lesson. Today, our vineyards are buildings gardens, and sometimes even fields. For some of Us churches in some cases are Vineyards. Big Churches with Sanctuaries that have major lighting and technology packages and cafés and eateries to enjoy one's sojourn there. The visuals can be breathtaking, and clearly the buildings are well-cared for. These type of major ministries should have fruit that changes folk's lives, these major vineyards of churches should have children's ministries, senior ministries, houseless ministries, poverty ministries, health care ministries, and even Job growth development ministries. But A lot of the time what we find is wild grapes. Many of times what the community finds in our modern day vineyards of Methodism is garbage Grapes. Let's look at these Wild Grapes. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rev-hooker/support

SERMON | Isaiah 5:1-7 - PROPHET MARGINS 5. "Yielding Wild Grapes" by Rev. Joseph Sanford at Sellersburg United Methodist Church in Sellersburg, Indiana To be pastoral or prophetic...?? That is the question. We wrap up our Prophet Margins series considering the consequences of our choices. Our pain becomes our lesson and our lesson becomes our hope for the future. Are we open to what God is going to bring us through the pain of our wild choices? We often settle for something that resembles the divine will but in actuality perverts it. Israel struggled with it then and we struggle with it now. This is where we must do our work as individuals and a church to consider the consequences of our choices as well as the lessons of our pain.

We continue the series dealing with the prophets from the Revised Common Lectionary readings. This morning, we continue from Isaiah 5:1-7. It is a harsh word comparing Israel to “wild (rotten) grapes” and declaring that it would be destroyed. The people had lost their way, they didn't acknowledge that their current state was a gift from God, and (most of all), they forgot the need to care for widows, orphans and the poor. Rev. Philip Hoppe, pastor at Peace Lutheran Church in Finlayson, MN and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bruno, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Judges 14:1-20. After the hope and promise of his birth narrative, Samson’s initial actions disappoint. His desire to marry a Philistine shows neglect for the First, Fourth, and Sixth Commandments. All the while, the LORD continues to direct even these events toward the deliverance of His people. Samson’s great strength from the Spirit of the LORD is evident as he tears apart a ferocious lion, yet he shows disregard for his Nazirite vow. Samson’s seven-day wedding feast is a raucous atmosphere, in which Samson again places himself in grave temptation, at the very least. His riddle shows cunning, yet the Philistine’s show their viciousness. Their threat of death to Samson’s wife and her father combine with her manipulation in order to discover Samson’s riddle. Samson, however, knows the reality. The Spirit of the LORD yet again fills him with great strength in order to exact God’s vengeance on the Philistines at Ashkelon. Even as we see Samson’s sins, we see the LORD at work to deliver His people. “Rebellion and Rescue” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Judges. This book is characterized by a familiar. As the generations after Joshua forget the LORD and what He has done for Israel, they fall into idolatry. The LORD gives them over into the hands of their enemies in order to bring them to their senses. When they cry out to Him in repentance, He sends a judge to rescue them and give them rest for a time, until they relapse into idolatry once more. In this cycle, we see a picture of our own Christian life. Daily, the old Adam in us is drowned in contrition and repentance, and the new man emerges in Baptismal forgiveness to live in righteousness and purity before God forever.

Isaiah 5:1-7 (NRSV) was the scripture base for this sermon. Christ is the vine, and God is the gardener who cares for the branches to make them fruitful. The branches are all those who claim to be followers of Christ. The fruitful branches are true believers who by their living union with Christ produce much fruit. Do I really walk with Jesus each and every day? If someone lived or worked with me every day and didn't speak to me, I'd feel awful. Still, we do this to our wonderful Lord. If I give a gift to someone and they fail to thank me, We say to myself: "Isn't that awful?" Yet, We do this to Jesus. We need to pray that the Holy Spirit will renew us, that we may walk closer to Jesus. Can we do less than to continually give Him our thanks and praise?
