Nostalgia can be a powerful thing. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, there was plenty of stuff Mike and Justin reflected on in this episode from their youth. Though as always when they pick a topic, sometimes they approach the idea differently for fun results. Episode 90 is a perfect representation of this method of madness. Listen to the guys wax nostalgia when talking about retro television, cartoons and how the theme songs converted to video games. They also go over the composers on the original theme songs and their thoughts on comparing them. Mike gets goofy with the best anime ever (courtesy of the internet meme about Corey in the House), Justin shares his take on Dragon Ball Z's music, Mike talks about college drinking games involving Power Rangers, and the guys collectively discuss sick days with Bob Barker, all on this memory-filled episode of XVGM Radio!
Justin (XVGM Radio, The Arcane Machine) joins Ed once again for a music-history show based on the danceable industrial sounds of the entire Descent series.

Justin and Mike aim to examine the good AND bad parts of it, to unearth some game music that you might not have known about. Aaron Hickman of the Genesis Gems podcast is also known as chiptune and VGM composer DYA. He joins us on this episode to help explain some of the nitty gritty details regarding GEMS and the Sega sound in general. The difference between consoles and handhelds can be immense…..or….there's not much of a difference (if we're talking about redbook audio, at least.) But what happens when we DO compare these two regarding the same composition, but different arrangements? What sacrifices need to be made to make the underpowered consoles stand out? Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin compare several handheld tracks with their console counterparts and determine which they like more...and the answers may shock you. Between Mike's nerdy ramblings about lyrical differences in Luna's Boat Song, Justin waxing nostalgic about his mind being blown regarding Lethal Weapon NES' switching characters method, controversial anti-war songs and plenty of balls jokes to go around, it's pretty clear these guys are Nutz for VGM!

Plenty of video games have only had certain releases in exclusive territories but PAL territories are home to some pretty oddball selections of games; some of which we've chosen here to highlight their amazing music. Who let a bunch of Yanks in to chat about PAL exclusives, anyways?! No idea, but you'll soon forget about all that when you tune in to this episode of XVGM Radio. From chats about what Smurfing as a verb REALLY means, chats about censored European games box art and..being too cute to ball. It'll all make sense after you give a listen to these PAL exclusives!
We're no strangers to covering obscure stuff on XVGM Radio...but this might be the most obscure thing we've chat about: Bandai's Wonderswan family of handhelds. Going after the Game Boy was a lofty goal, one which made the Wonderswan succumb. But today, we dig up the grave of Bandai's Wonderswan, the Wonderswan Color and the SwanCrystal, to delve into some video game music that we just can't put our finger on. Does it sound like Game Boy? Master System? Something else? We talk about the rise and fall of the little Japan-only handheld along with Mike's confusion over this system and the Neo Geo Pocket, Comparisons to adult film concepts (just how many times Chou Aniki can get stuck in a washing machine, super big bro?!) The legacy of Gunpei Yokoi and his tragic end, plus we get super nerdy about the life and death of the Bandai Wonderswan: All on Episode 76!

The Legend of Zelda is perhaps most famous for being one of the flagship franchises on Nintendo consoles, expanding into the third dimension and consistently innovating as time has marched on. However, the franchise has also had its fair share of exploration on handhelds beginning with Link's Awakening and continues to this day on the console/handheld hybrid Nintendo Switch with the remake all these years later. Today on XVGM Radio, we explore the vast history of the Legend of Zelda on handhelds and dive deep into their soundtracks all while sharing our own memories of playing them. The story of Vanillaware, an Osaka-based Japanese game developer, is one that could've been showcased in failure. The company's first game almost shut down the company, but they later would regroup and continue working on video games, putting out some of the most original and interesting titles on more recent generations of consoles. Today, we sit down with Pragmatik, a Youtube game reviewer and super-fan of Vanillaware who shares some in depth information on games like Muramasa The Demon Blade, Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown. Musically, there's a lot to dive into here, so grab your best swords and sorcery gear (and maybe a mech or two) and jump into the music of Basiscape (Vanillaware's go-to composer crew featuring Hitoshi Sakimoto and more.) Every now and then a game comes out that features a soundtrack that puts the fire back in our VGM lovin' hearts. Paradise Killer is exactly that kind of OST. The XVGM Radio guys are joined by Barry “Epoch” Topping, the composer of (what Mike considers) the best VGM soundtrack of 2020. From the vocal-infused, saxophone wailing on the intro theme “Paradise (Stay Forever)”to the mix of genre-hopping across the70s and 80s (and even a little bit of the 90s), this soundtrack features an eclectic mix of music. From City Pop/Future Funk and Vaporwave influences, to straight up New Jack Swing and 80s Dance, and down to synthwave and easy listening, these tunes got it all! Hear Barry's story about how he transitioned from wedding band player to VGM composer, his video game influences, listen to Mike and Justin talk about the game in-depth with some interesting reveals about the game and it's soundtrack directly from the composer himself! New Year, New Niko Episode! 2020 was a rough year on all of us, but before it got out of hand, Niko had stopped by for an episode in January and there was discussion at the end of that episode to cover Amiga the next time he stopped by. Classics versus Covers has been done by XVGM Radio before, but never with a solo artist! Today's episode is a treat, as Justin and Mike sit down with Lucia La Rezza, an Italian violinist and all around fan of video games. From her beginnings with the Game Boy to her self-admitted Playstation obsession, Lucia is as much of a fan of working on music as she is for video games; and the two aren't mutually exclusive. We showcased 6 of her covered arrangements and compare them with the original, all while chatting about her Sephiroth crush, being a bassist in a Power Metal band, her shared musicianship and love of Nobuo Uematsu with our co-host Justin, all while getting musically hugged by Ms. Lucia La Rezza!
