To celebrate Nintendmas, Archbishop Dracul and Father Avram reminisce about Sunsoft's Blaster Master (Nov 1988) and Capcom's Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers (June 1990) for the NES. Send us a textThe miNEStry founders, Archbishop Dracul and Father Avram, seek to inspire their 8-bit parishioners through methodical and ceremonial scrutiny of the library of games on the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Boin, who previously joined us for a mini-episode on Journey to Silius returns to talk about a little bit of Blaster Master, a lot of GIMMICK and a little more about City Hunter for the PC Engine. Sunsoft are almost as well regarded for their soundtracks as for their games, if not more so, so we have a good chat about the general sound for these games and especially the influence of Jazz Fusion and City Pop on the latter two soundtracks. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan, Kris, and Dean board the Cartoon Express for a trip to Pac-Land! They watched the classic Pac-Man cartoon episode Sir Pac-a-Lot. How did it go? And how did they rank all the cartoons they've watched so far this year? Why are can openers so funny? What's up with all the hats? Let's find out! At the top of the show, Dean's been playing something called Deep Rock Galactic Survivor, which sounds like way too many words to be real. Meanwhile, Dan dives deeper into the world of the Pokemon Trading Card game, and spends some quality time with Pacific Drive, which is NOT the same thing as Pacific Rim. Kris, on the other hand, is obsessed with Ode to Castlevania, wildly unimpressed by Hatch Tales, and notices some fun new updates to his Atari VCS. Finally, in Week Old News, Monster Hunter becomes a shampoo, Phil Spencer spouts some nonsense about the Xbox's new ad campaign, Blaster Master makes its way to the Super NES, and more! This game is like Mario Dark Souls. And I don't know what it is about it, but I love it. I like tough platformers, I love Mario games, and this one cranks the difficulty up to about 50. It has to be the hardest (Nintendo published) Mario game ever made. And while it originally didn't make its way over here until Mario All-Stars on the SNES, the original version is available on Switch Online now. Both of them will fuck you up. My guest this week, Bradley McCue, took one for the team and spent over a week plugging away at Lost Levels and fighting the urge to throw his controller to get ready for this podcast, and we have a pretty beefy convo about whether or not Lost Levels is good, too hard, and if it was the right call by Nintendo to not release it in North America back in the day (it was). And before we RAGE, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if it's wrong to play games on easy these days. Where do I stand on the Slay The Spire board game? And what classic series that HASN'T got the remake treatment yet do I want to see get it the most?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Sunsoft blew our minds with Blaster Master, but the company did not suddenly become some 8-bit powerhouse after releasing that game. Here's the rocky portion of their road to greatness, a pair of NES conversions that will leave you scratching your head. In the case of Platoon, you'll be left wondering why they thought THIS license was suitable to a platform primarily advertised and sold to children. In the case of Xenophobe, you'll be confused about how meager a port such a technically adept company managed to produce. Production note: NES footage captured from @analogueinc Mini. Andere media: Joyland, een boek van Stephen King, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power en Thor: Love and Thunder. Het Steekspel: God Hand voor de Playstation 2; een brawler gemaakt door Clover Studios. Inmiddels wordt deze game gezien als een cult-klassieker.

I consider myself fairly well traveled when it comes to the NES. I've played MOST of the big titles in some capacity, and I know most of the origin stories when it comes to Nintendo's mainstream franchises. But one that's always eluded me was Metroid. So while I was on holidays in July, I decided to break out my Switch and see where Samus came from. And while I'm glad I've experienced her first game, I can confidently say that I never want to play it again, haha. This game is innovative, creative, easy to look at, and pretty damned fun. But it's also hard. NES hard. And if you know NES hard, you know that I resisted the urge to throw my Switch in the ocean on a few occasions. I had to look up a map, and I'm not even ashamed of it. My buddy Daniel is the biggest Metroid fan I know, but he missed this one back in the day, too. So we both just finished our first run through Metroid on the NES, and we got together to talk about the years it took off both of our lives. Holy fuck, why does it have to be so hard???? And before we talk Samus, I toss together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we talked about how I pick my guests for the show. If I could go drinking with one gaming character, who would it be? And why the hell is RTG not on TikTok?? Plus we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 "NES Tough" games: Blaster Master, Fester's Quest, and Battletoads. Are you on social media? Of course you are. So follow us! Sunsoft gets a major glow-up this episode after a mediocre start as a publisher of ancient arcade ports and one neat-but-meager light gun shooter. No one would accuse them of half-assing it this time around, though; Blaster Master shot instantly to the top of the NES all-time greats list as soon as it debuted, and it still holds up remarkably well despite some unforgiving design choices that make for some incredibly difficult scenarios. The plot may not make much sense, and the weapon degradation system can be deeply demoralizing, but on the whole Blaster Master did a lot to advance the state of the NES art. Also this episode, I take a moment to provide proper context for the whole Tengen thing I erroneously tackled back in the 1987 chronology. The new TMNT game is out, there's probably a new Nintendo Direct coming soon, and TW initially stopped at NieR ending A. Also, Kusogrande 7 has begun, and TW got a Top Gun game co-designed by Don Mattrick, which is hilarious. Meanwhile, Blaster Master is a fun game with problems that lays an interesting foundation but is far too concerned with wasting your time to fully deliver on it. It is, however, a really interesting and generally enjoyable playthrough, minus a couple of major sticking points. Greetings, Gamers! For this episode we're joined once again by Skeletroy as we go through the NES library (plus a couple of bonus Bat-tracks) of renowned Sunsoft composer Naoki Kodaka. We have a blast[er Master] discussing one of our very favorite composers who, while he definitely gets attention, is not as widely-known as industry titans like Kondo, Uematsu, and Shimomura. Still, as this episode will show, few could rival the talents of Kodaka and his team in the realm of Very Good Music on the Famicom/NES. Thanks as always to our amazing patrons and the artists who made our show art and theme song.

The original Blaster Master on the Nintendo Entertainment System was host to plenty of nostalgic memories for those of us who grew up during that era. But there's a surprising amount of games that have been released for the game-turned-franchise and on this episode, Justin and Mike dive deep into the legacy of the series and how Naoki Kodaka helped shape the roots of what would become an explosive success in the hands of developer Inticreates. Taking you on a trip from the surprising origins of the first official game of the series (which has its history with an entirely different company!) all the way up to chatting about the upcoming Blaster Master Zero 3: the finale of a riveting revisit to the Blaster Master games. Join Mike as he tries to stump Justin with a soundalike from another Sunsoft game. Plus, how the Worlds of Power book fits into all this...wait, what?! Hop in your Sophia tank and let's get rolling into Episode 79, on XVGM Radio!

Join Pat Dooley and Ricardo Giraldo for the final episode of round two of the Nintendo Entertainment Center King of Consoles tournament, where tank platformer Blaster Master takes on controller-throwing simulator Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos. Two games enter, only one can advance to the third round! Will it be a kid following his frog down a hole, then killing mutants with a tank? Or will it be Ryu, trying to make exact platforming jumps in the middle of a blizzard? It's a fun conversation, so please subscribe to make sure you don't miss a second of the action! Questions? Comments? Feel free to reach out via email, Facebook, or Twitter! You can also check out our Twitch channel, follow along with the brackets, contribute to the show financially, or see details on all the games in the tournament by checking out the IGN list that inspired our seeding.

Sorry, I had a hard time phrasing this question, so it's prolly a bit confusing. Maybe an example might help. For me I would say Kirby Star Allies. Although I have issues with Star Allies, I don't think it's a bad game. I picked it because I feel that it makes the Kirby franchise, or at least the modern Kirby games, seem a lot more "Kiddie" than it actually is, and because it's the main Kirby game on switch I feel that it has spread this impression to a lot of people. It's very tempting for me to write down a full lecture on why I think that is right here, but I think that's enough for you all to hopefully get an idea of what I mean by the question. InfiniteBlue — 06/23/2021 The Devil May Cry franchise has two of these. The first of which is the DmC reboot, which was so tonally discordant with the rest of the series with its edgelord "hollywood-ification" of the plot and characters. It's a decent action game mechanically and would have been well received if they simply... didn't call it DmC. Then there's DMC2, which is a dull and bad video game by any measure. You'd be doing yourself a favor by going straight from 1 to 3, it's that unremarkable. twodollarhero — 06/23/2021 I think a lot of the more recent Super Monkey Ball games are a good example of this. I've been playing SMB2 again lately (because I'm so hyped for Banana Mania) and bouncing from that (no pun intended) to something like Banana Blitz HD is a jarring experience. The more modern entries of the series - which vastly outnumber what fans consider to be the “good” games - totally misrepresent what the games are about. Suddenly, there's jumping mechanics and every level is littered with guard rails or worst of all, control gimmicks. The series is about fun, challenging arcade gameplay with pitch perfect controls… and most of the games in the series at this point aren't about that anymore. SpiderShan — 06/23/2021 I guess I'd have to go with Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World for Wii. There are quite a few “Tales of” games and spin-offs and Tales of Symphonia for GameCube is considered one of the best. I know it's my favorite in the series. I was hyped to play the sequel but they decided to change a lot of the gameplay including the use of monsters in place of human companions. You play as characters completely unrelated to the original game and the characters that I loved from the first game were “guest characters” in the sequel that would come and go and were a hollow shell of what they were before. It's such a departure from what made the original so special. ChrisHL94Rewind
