Send us a Text Message. From Come Follow Me:The accounts in Alma 30–31 clearly demonstrate the power of words—for evil and for good. The “flattering” and “great swelling words” of a false teacher named Korihor threatened to bring “many souls down to destruction” (Alma 30:31, 47). Similarly, the teachings of a Nephite dissenter named Zoram led a whole group of people to fall “into great errors” and “pervert the ways of the Lord” (Alma 31:9, 11).In contrast, Alma had unwavering faith that the word of God would have a “more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else” (Alma 31:5). Alma's words expressed eternal truth and drew upon the powers of Jesus Christ to silence Korihor (see Alma 30:39–50), and they invited His blessing on those who went with him to bring the Zoramites back to the truth (see Alma 31:31–38). These are valuable examples for followers of Christ today when false messages are common. We can find truth by trusting, as Alma did, “the virtue of the word of God” (Alma 31:5).The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  For additional information or official statements, please visit the website below. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints:https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/?lang=eng#biblestudy #oldtestament #religion #churchofjesuschrist #ldspodcast #christianpodcast #missionary #lds #biblestories #christ #faith #faithinchrist #scriptures #bookofmormon #doctrineandcovenants #pearlofgreatprice #temples #houseofthelord #mormon #mormonbeliefs #chritiansandmormons #god #endure #ironrod #faithineveryfootstep #generalconference #prophets #followtheprophet #commandments #love #service #charity #keepstriving #keeponstriving #gospelgrowthandgoodtimes #become #newtestamentiMOM PodcastIf you need a mom friend right now, you've come to the right place. Jess and Dr. Val Larsen continue their conversation on how Dr. Larsen first started contemplating Heavenly Mother and what he has discovered through careful reading of the Book of Mormon and studying associated historical works. He suggests that Lehi and Nephi, along with Joseph Smith, received and worked to restore the pre-deuteronomistic, old religion of Abraham in their respective dispensations. As Dr. Larsen and contemporary scholars have found, this ancient religion believed in a divine Council of the Gods, including Heavenly Mother, Heavenly Father, and their Son Jesus Christ. This belief in separate embodied, glorified members of a Heavenly Family makes the theology of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints distinctive from other religions. Yet, as a church, we tend to deemphasize this point. Val suggests that this "Greater Apostasy" keeps us from fully worshiping the Divine Family, and that as we undo the removal of Heavenly Mother from our theology (which took place in the days of Josiah), we can continue to see the unfolding of the ongoing, modern-day restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ and better help prepare the world for His Second Coming. The Joe and Smith Podcast: Read the Book of Mormon with us

The guys are excited about their new theme song. Maybe the listener has heard it before, but this is when it debuted for them. Joe makes Smith listen to a wacky recording from Willy Wood. The guys wonder what it would be like to leave the early church and if it would upset JS. Joe returns and reports about Matt Easton, who mentioned being a proud gay son of God in his BYU valedictorian commencement speech. Joe has a lot of indignation about J-Ho's response. Joe watched Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018) and wishes that the general authorities taught love and acceptance. The guys figure out how tall D'Oakes is. Smith bears his testimony of Fred Rogers. Neither of the guys have seen A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019).  Smith doesn't want to deal with Zoram today, and who could blame him? Nephi doesn't want to sound like it was his idea to name the place after him. The guys have a new take on the BOM's use of the word multiply.  Smith calls for (and Joe agrees) the church to remove this section of the BOM. It's made up. It's not helping society. JS wants to make damn certain that the reader knows that those 116 pages were stolen, he takes an opportunity in this verse to do so. Joe reads from an apologist website that explains the blatant racism in this chapter and Smith does not like it. Joe goes into a quick summary of the problems surrounding the books of Abraham and Moses that JS claims to have translated from papyri. Smith points out how impressive it is to pull an entire religion out of a hat.    The 1897 Audio Record of Wilford Woodruff's Testimony https://youtu.be/5NjANSFISFY  BYU 2019 FHSS Valedictorian Speech https://youtu.be/rLeMVykzvKY  Matt Easton responds to Elder Holland: Diversity is not divisiveness https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2021/08/27/matt-easton-elder-holland/  May 1, 1969: Fred Rogers testifies before the Senate Subcommittee on Communications https://youtu.be/fKy7ljRr0AA  The Charge of “Racism” in the Book of Mormon  https://www.fairlatterdaysaints.org/conference/august-2003/the-charge-of-racism-in-the-book-of-mormon    Email us at joeandsmithpod@gmail.com Music Provided by Eric VanAusdal with permission from the artist. It's getting hot in Smith's studio and he claims that sitting on cold rice can help. Joe does a little fact-checking on a supposed JS quote. The guys also mistake where the “save Jesus only” quote is, but they figure it out eventually. The guys aren't sure whether the JS quote really came from him or not. Smith reminds the listener that if they disagree with him, they're probably disagreeing with God too. Smith recaps how he feels about re-reading Rough Stone Rolling. Joe watched the Netflix Kanye West documentary (Jeen-Yuhs, 2022). He liked the documentary, but he's still a little triggered by people who take their religion too seriously. The guys mention that one big difference between polyamory and LDS polygamy is consent. Smith reminisces about the JFS story where he's “true blue through and through”. The guys are still not happy about Rusty's flex to move away from Mormon as a nickname. The church continues to double-down on anti LGBTQIA policies while stating otherwise. Joe tells a story about his MTC companion who disapproved of missionaries building a snowman.  Smith reads a facetious tweet from a facetious twitter account about black people keeping their first estate. The guys try out what it's like to sing praises to God for eternity in the CK. It's been a long time since Joe has seen Mannequin (1987) and Smith has never seen it. Joe had to do some explaining after watching some Dave Chappelle standup with his son who identifies as gay. Smith reads a quote from Rusty about God's love not being unconditional which makes Joe angry. Smith eases the tension with a sacred hymn. The guys recap some HP characters including, Henry Porter, Horgrid, Dumbledorf, and Professor McGillicuddy. The God of the BOM is a God of conditional love. The guys decide they need more sh*t to talk about HBE. Both Joe and Smith were taught that poligamy will exist in the afterlife. It takes almost an hour before the guys start reading in this one. Sam has a conversation with Lehi about not wanting to have to hang out with Nephi after Lehi dies. Joe gets excited thinking about Nephi repenting of being such an a**hole to his brothers.  Smith teases everyone with some droop talk. He casts Zoram out of their presence. Joe thinks the BOM could use 80% more of some of the messages here. Is Nephi talking about building a Frankenstein? Why does the cadence change so much? Audiofiles: apologies. It sounds like Joe recorded his part of the conversation in a different room from his mic. The guys rate each other on funniness. They're probably both too generous. Smith tells Joe about Brigham Morris Young, it's news to Joe. Joe tells Smith about Ervil LeBaron, who kind of sounds like a Mormon Charlie Manson. Joe is still a little disturbed over the allegations against G Bitner Hinckley from The Godmakers 2. Smith says that he never felt a personal relationship with Jesus while in the church. Joe agrees and says that he felt unworthy because of stigmas against masturbation in the church at the time. Wickedness never was happiness originated with someone who was doing wickedness wrong.  Joe wants to sing a song coming back from break, but Smith won't stop talking about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Smith gets in touch with his vocal fry ability. Smith points out the fact that icebergs have never caused a problem in history that we know of. The chapter starts off hot by reminding readers that Columbus was a good guy. Joe points out some pretty terrible justifications for what he sees at the BOM version of manifest destiny. Name reveal: Podcast Podcast Smith and Joe Podcast Podcast. Smith likes the idea of reading the BOM at Joe to condemn him. Do you know more primary songs than Disney songs? Joe thinks he may have found a verse in the BOM with a positive message. When he puts it into context however, it's still telling him he's not good enough.  Joe doesn't want to go to hell so he's listening to Smith read him the BOM. Joe inadvertently forms a Cut Your Hair chiasmus. Also again: obey JS, and you will get money. Joe mistakes ch 4 for ch 5. It's an honest mistake. Zoram makes a quick appearance and he's definitely not suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. Smith is worried about the hate in his heart, but Joe reassures him that they can overcome what they've been taught. Joe reminds the listener that JS is an incredible conman. 90+ y/o white men quote the BOM as if it's scripture. Smith admits that his testimony was shaken by BKP's hateful, limp, handshake. Smith needs to end quickly because of a star war.    Brigham Morris Young (Wikipedia page) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B._Morris_Young  Hula Pie from Duke's- https://www.dukesmaui.com/hula-pie/ Ervil LeBaron (Wikipedia page) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ervil_LeBaron  Pavement - Cut Your Hair (Official Video) https://youtu.be/QTTgpTeb0Z8  A Mother's Courage: The Mary Thomas Story (1989 TV Movie)  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097915/plotsummary?ref_=tt_ov_pl  You Can't Touch Mormon Jesus https://youtu.be/46PXaJxzuDE  Email us at joeandsmithpod@gmail.com Music Provided by Eric VanAusdal with permission from the artist. Smith comes in hot with a bunch of topics that will not be covered. Joe starts talking about The God Makers and its sequel, but he gets distracted easily. The guys appreciated the first one, with the exception of all of the Christian friendly fire. The second one wasn't great. Joe talks about his experience listening to the Jahndalynn interview with Eddie D (see link below, it's nearly 4 hours long).  The Tanners wrote a book, but they also have insight into authenticating documents from their knowledge of the tanning process. JS starts this chapter with a convenient, leading question from L&L. JS loves white people, says Smith. Smith doesn't like sheep because he was told that it was a good thing to be one. He's also not a fan of the repentance concept as a way to keep church members on the defensive, or feeling bad about themselves. Smith fantasizes about the idea of Temple Square having the actual brass plates, sword of Laban, seer stone, etc. Joe thinks that the urim and thummim could be like a really good Snapchat filter. Joe starts an awkward conversation with Melvin the holy spirit, who in turn, wants to talk to Zoram. Smith learns what a hangover feels like and may regain his testimony of the Word of Wisdom. Are ambulances the only vehicles that can have a backwards font on their bonnets? Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord. The guys explain the timeline of the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, which are separated by the birth of one Elvis Aaron Presley. Smith had a goth friend in elementary school who may have given him real blood for a Halloween costume. The guys tease more info to come about temples and review some of the requirements to actually go inside. To Joe's utter delight, Smith drops a little Regan in verse 3. The guys try to get to the bottom of whether or not Laban's murder is a good idea- they're leaning toward no if it's for scripture, but yes if it's for Hollywood. Smith recalls a pretty effective missionary door approach from his mission days. Zoram is super into talking about the elders of the Jews as evidenced by verses 22 and 27. These involve Korihor's origins, the reason for the similarity of his beliefs to those of the Zoramites, and why he switched so quickly from an atheistic attack to an agnostic plea. Another intriguing question is […] The post The Rise and Fall of Korihor, a Zoramite: A New Look at the Failed Mission of an Agent of Zoram first appeared on The Interpreter Foundation.

Who exactly were these “elders” mentioned by Zoram and why are readers not told more about them by Nephi? Because the Book of Mormon gives no more information about their identity, scholars have turned to the social institution of Israelite “elders” in the world of ancient Israel for further understanding.
