The U.S. Senate hearing on airline fees, a Boeing employee surveillance program, the judge rejects the 737 MAX plea deal, Airbus floats a cockpit idea for Extended Minimum Crew Operations (eMCO), and a study will look at how high-G flying might affect Naval fighter pilots. Also, ticket sales for EAA Air Venture Oshkosh and FlightSimExpo, Brian's 2024 travels, fly-by-wire airplanes and smuggling Cessnas into Russia. Airline executives testify at a Senate Subcommittee. (Screen capture courtesy PBS NewsHour.) Aviation News US senators grill airline officials about fees for seats and checked bags The U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations held a hearing on December 4, 2024 about airline fees charged for baggage, seat selection, and other services. Executives representing American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, and Spirit Airlines testified. Testimony included: Airline fees - Committee Chairman Sen. Richard Blumenthal consistently referred to these as “junk fees.” In opening remarks, airlines characterized fees as allowing the consumer to create and pay for the experience they want - unbundling. “Bag bounty” programs - Sen. Hawley was quite antagonistic. Frontier removed their program September 30 that paid gate attendants for checking carry-on bags. Pricing - The Senators wanted to know why personal information is collected before the ticket price is given and the use of dynamic pricing based on the personal data. They also (unsuccessfully) probed the airline executives for the cost of the services covered by fees, assuming that price is related to cost. Family seating - Sen Hassan and others argued for fee-free family seating and sometimes confused a fee and the ability to accommodate. See the DOT Airline Family Seating Dashboard. DOT Airline Family Seating Dashboard Loyalty programs - Sen Marshall characterized credit card programs as being about “voodoo miles” and the revenue to the airlines as a “kickback.” Competition - Spirit Airlines Matthew Kline was very critical of legacy airlines saying Spirit is at a competitive disadvantage over slots. Also that the majors paid pilots to retire during Covid, then poached Spirit pilots when demand returned. Overall, there was bipartisan demand that the airlines change junk fee practices, and two people should not be charged different prices for the same service on the same flight. It was evident that AI was on the minds of all, with airlines starting to think about applications and Senators afraid of what the technology could do. Speaking for their respective airlines were Steve Johnson, vice chair and chief strategy officer, American Airlines; Peter Carter, chief external affairs officer, Delta Air Lines; Andrew Nocella, EVP and chief commercial officer, United Airlines; Robert Schroeter, SVP, chief commercial officer, Frontier Airlines; and Matthew Klein, EVP and chief commercial officer, Spirit Airlines See also Airline executives blasted at Senate hearing over carrier fees Video: Airline executives testify on junk fees before Senate committee https://www.youtube.com/live/jYNbu7E8gj8?si=VygQRsTGV7J-BvLD Boeing cancels its workplace surveillance program, will remove sensors Boeing had started to install sensors “in ceiling tiles above workstations, conference rooms, and common areas.” The sensors included motion detectors, cameras, and light, heat, and noise detectors. Only aggregated data would be presented to management. After details of the program appeared in the Seattle Times, Boeing employees reacted as expected. A Senate subcommittee voted 9-6 to kill a bill that would require public elementary and secondary school principals to essentially “out” transgender or non-conforming students to their parents. The bill, SB 37, or “Sage's Law,” introduced by Sen. John J. McGuire III (R – Powhatan) was discussed during the Education and Health subcommittee hearing on Public Education on Feb. 1. If passed, it would have required principals to inform a parent if any minor enrolled at the schools expresses a difference between their biological sex and their perceived or desired gender. “Parental rights is a real important thing,” McGuire said. “It's important...Article LinkSupport the show

A U.S. Senate Subcommittee chaired by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand heard testimony this week from AARO's Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick. Gillibrand and two fellow senators asked intelligent questions in the public session, but didn't get many answers from the AARO chief. Dr. Kirkpatrick said he's seen no credible evidence of any ET tech flying in our skies. He then unveiled video of an unknown object recorded by a DOD sensor platform in the Middle East, an object eerily reminiscent of the Mosul Orb - a genuine UAP captured on video over Iraq in 2016 (first unveiled by WEAPONIZED earlier this year). Jeremy and George discuss what was learned from the Senate hearing, what the future may hold for Sean Kirkpatrick, and why future congressional hearings might hold more promise. GOT A TIP? The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: On Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testified before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. During questioning, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) quoted a recent New York Times article documenting the Biden Administration ignoring multiple warnings that migrant children were being exploited for labor. Sen. Hawley stated that Sec. Mayorkas should resign for putting the lives of innocent children in danger. You can read Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Hannah Dreier's report here: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/17/us/politics/migrant-child-labor-biden.html During an interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News, billionaire Elon Musk alarmingly explained that, prior to his acquisition of Twitter, government agencies had access to the private direct messages of users on the social media platform. During a House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Andrew Clyde (R-GA) asked Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky about statements she made in March 2021—she had claimed, “vaccinated people don't carry the virus, they don't get sick.” Dr. Walensky explained that discrepancy between her optimistic claims in 2021 and reality were due to “an evolution of science.” On Wednesday, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) chaired the Senate Subcommittee on Food and Nutrition. Unfortunately, Sen. Fetterman seemed unwell. While appearing before a House Appropriations Committee, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Lawrence Tabak said he believes COVID-19 originated via a zoonotic transfer that occurred naturally. Is it just us, or does he sound exactly like Frank Pentangeli from The Godfather Part II? “I don't know nothing about that!”

Pearson and another Justin (Jones), who disrupted the session with bullhorns, found themselves thrown out of the legislature (before being reinstated shortly thereafter). A bespectacled black dude known for his Afro hairdo and histrionic arm movements while speaking, Pearson always struck me as a Dollar General Malcolm X. But, the past few weeks have provided a deeper revelation about him: It's all an act.” Why are we incentivizing people to veer away from normalcy? The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: On Saturday, former President Donald Trump revealed that he expects to be arrested for hush money payments disturbed to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in 2016—though, no arrest has yet been made. The New York Post is now reporting that law enforcement is not expecting an arraignment until next week. While appearing on CNN, political commentator Van Jones explained that he believes it's a mistake for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to indict former-President Donald Trump for alleged hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels. While speaking before the Senate Appropriations subcommittee, Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that he hopes to “modernize the State Department” by “carrying out diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives.” Blinken also vowed to release a report on the Biden Administration's withdrawal from Afghanistan. Congressman Jeff Van Drew—Republican representing New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the death of eight dolphins beached in Sea Isle City on Tuesday. Many environmental experts believe the sudden, drastic uptick in marine life deaths along the Atlantic Coast is linked to offshore wind development's usage of sonar to map the ocean's floor.

[Encore Episode -- originally recorded 1/17/2017] Bio Tiffany Cross (@tifcrossmyheart) is brings 20 years of relationships, outreach, and storytelling to The Beat, Washington's inclusive political pulse. Having spent significant time working in newsrooms, covering Capitol Hill, managing in-house corporate public affairs, working on campaigns, and navigating communities of color, she brings a unique set of skills that casts a wide net of influence. Understanding the intersection of press, partnerships, politics, and policy, Tiffany has a proven record of excellent relationships in the private and public sectors, media, the entertainment industry, and civic and social justice organizations. Most recently, Tiffany served as a Senior Advisor for the National Education Association (NEA) and its three million members. In this capacity, she liaised with the public sector, traditional and niche media markets, constituency groups, and civic and social justice organizations. She worked with NEA leadership on branding and positioning and was responsible for forging strategic partnerships, internal and external messaging, conducting scans on grassroots and grasstop organizations, and engaging communities in bilateral conversations on education, labor, and civic and social justice issues. Before joining the NEA, Tiffany served as the Manager of News & Public Affairs and the Liaison to the Executive Branch for Black Entertainment Television (BET) Networks. Her work at BET included coordinating with the Democratic National Convention and Republican National Convention in 2008, executing the network's participation in the 2008 Presidential election, brand enhancement for the network, and advising on BET's political and social agenda. Tiffany's broad experience includes guest booking for CNN's Reliable Sources with Howard Kurtz, covering Capitol Hill for Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, and working as an Associate Producer for Capital Gang. She was also a former Producer at America's Most Wanted and Director of Communications for Brilliant Corners Research & Strategies where she worked on the Obama for America Presidential Campaign and secured high-level visibility for company president Cornell Belcher. In this episode, we discussed: how Tiffany's personal journey has informed her approach to creating value for her network. Tiffany's key strategies and mindset hacks for building powerful professional relationships in Washington. how 'The Beat' is helping policy professionals in Washington stay on top of what's happening and find relevant networking opportunities. Resources: The Beat (send news leads to: info@thebeatdc.com) The Raben Group Task Rabbit The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver NEWS ROUNDUP Donald Trump named former New York City Mayor and early Trump supporter Rudy Giuliani as an informal cybersecurity advisor. He'll head the President-elect's cybersecurity working group. Abby Phillip in the Washington Post writes that, since leaving the New York City Mayorship, Giuliani has started his own cybersecurity consulting firm-Giuliani Partners. Now a bunch of people are saying, "What the hell does Guiliani know about cybsecurity?" Well, Motherboard's Jason Koebler and Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai looked into it and found some folks familiar with Giuliani and Partners' work ... It turns out their expertise is more along the lines of telling companies how to legally cover their asses if they're the victim of cyberbreach, as opposed to advising on actual cybersecurity solutions. So it's looking like this job is more of a thank you for to Giuliani for his help during the campaign. It also turns out, as Rob Price at Business Insider found, that Giuliani's company website--giulianisecurity.com--is replete with vulnerabilities. -- You've heard all about Trump's dossier--people calling him PEEOTUS and things like that on Twitter, so we won't go into all the details on that--especially since the dossier is still largely unsubstantiated. But Scott Shane put together a nice summary just in case you don't want to sit there all day trying to figure out what's going on with this. Basically, this all started when the Republicans retained a company called Fusion GPS to look into Trump to figure out how to hurt him politically. Then, when it turned out he was going to be the Republican nominee, the Clinton campaign took over and retained Fusion to continue the investigation. The dossier has been floating around Washington for quite sometime, but the President and President-elect were briefed on it, and that's when it made its way to the public via BuzzFeed and other sites. Mr. Trump says the entire dossier is a total fabrication. But if it's a total fabrication--it's pretty detailed, so someone must have had a lot of time on their hands. In any case, the FBI is investigating the claims ... although no one knows if Trump will authorize that investigation to continue. Some are also wondering why FBI Director James Comey was so interested in Hillary Clinton's email but not this. So this issue isn't going away anytime soon, basically, is the takeaway here. -- Matt Hamilton at the LA Times reports that BackPage--the classified ad website -- shut down its adult section last week after the U.S. Senate released a scathing report accusing the company of hiding targeted search terms related to prostitution and child abuse. BackPage Founders Michael Lacey and and James Larkin were scheduled to testify before the Senate Committee on Homeland and Governmental Affairs' subcommittee on investigations. The committee's report alleges that its review of some 1.1 million documents revealed evidence that the company facilitated sex trafficking and child abuse. Testimony from a BackPage site moderator seems to show the company actively removed search terms so they wouldn't lose ad revenue, but still keep the ads posted without actively promoting crimes. But BackPage says it adheres to the the Communications Decency Act which provides immunity to websites that host content by third parties. The company also claimed the government investigation was an violation of its First Amendment Rights One children's advocate--Lois Lee--founder of Children of the Night--even said the site has actually helped law enforcement identify predators and locate missing children. But Senators Bob Portman--the Republican from Ohio and as Democratic Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill--both of who led the bi-partisan investigation-- say BackPages's decision to shut down the adult section shows how damning the evidence they uncovered was. -- Congress has selected its leadership for its communications and tech-related committees. Senate Commerce Committee Chair John Tune announced that Mississippi Republican Senator Roger Wicker will lead the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation and the Internet. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Greg Walden announced Tennessee Republican Marsha Blackburn, who opposes net neutrality and prevented efforts to build municipal broadband networks, will lead the House Communications and Technology subcommittee. Jon Brodkin reports in Ars Technica. -- Aaron Smith at Pew reports that a record number of Americans have smartphones and access to broadband at home. Seventy-seven percent of Americans have smartphones, with explosive growth among adults over age 50. Americans with access to broadband at home increased 6 points to 73%. Also, Seventy percent of Americans use social media and half own a tablet. -- iPhone app purchasers may sue Apple for not allowing them to purchase apps outside of the Apple store, according to the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, overturning the lower court's ruling. The decision doesn't affect the merits of the case brought against Apple, but if the plaintiff's win, it could open the door for more competition in the app market. Stephen Nells and Dan Levine have the story in Reuters. -- The independent prosecutor in South Korea investigating the corruption scandal that has led to the suspension of the country's first female president -- Park Geun-hye -- has asked a local court to issue an arrest warrant for Lee Jae--yong--the head of Samsung. The prosecutors allege Lee used corporate money to bribe Park for favors. The court is expected to review the request on Wednesday. Anna Fifield has more at the Washington Post. -- Finally, The Email Privacy Act is alive again, after passing unanimously in the House and dying in the Senate last year. The bill would require authorities to get warrants for emails as well as social media data, including data older than 180 days. It would also allow providers to notify their customers that their information was requested. The bill was introduced by Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) and Jared Polis (D-Colo.). John Eggerton has the story in Multichannel News.

On August 3rd, 2022, the Senate Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Spending Oversight held a hearing to discuss the threat of gain-of-function research and the origin of COVID-19. Doctors Richard Ebright, Steven Quay, and Kevin Esvelt testified publicly before the committee. In their collective testimony, we finally hear the inconvenient truth about dangerous gain of function research and the mountain of evidence supporting a possible lab origin of COVID-19. These experts candidly discuss what Doctors Fauci and Collins have never publicly said out loud. The guys are excited about their new theme song. Maybe the listener has heard it before, but this is when it debuted for them. Joe makes Smith listen to a wacky recording from Willy Wood. The guys wonder what it would be like to leave the early church and if it would upset JS. Joe returns and reports about Matt Easton, who mentioned being a proud gay son of God in his BYU valedictorian commencement speech. Joe has a lot of indignation about J-Ho's response. Joe watched Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018) and wishes that the general authorities taught love and acceptance. The guys figure out how tall D'Oakes is. Smith bears his testimony of Fred Rogers. Neither of the guys have seen A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019). Smith doesn't want to deal with Zoram today, and who could blame him? Nephi doesn't want to sound like it was his idea to name the place after him. The guys have a new take on the BOM's use of the word multiply. Smith calls for (and Joe agrees) the church to remove this section of the BOM. It's made up. It's not helping society. JS wants to make damn certain that the reader knows that those 116 pages were stolen, he takes an opportunity in this verse to do so. Joe reads from an apologist website that explains the blatant racism in this chapter and Smith does not like it. Joe goes into a quick summary of the problems surrounding the books of Abraham and Moses that JS claims to have translated from papyri. Smith points out how impressive it is to pull an entire religion out of a hat. Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen recently testified before the Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, telling senators that Facebook and Instagram stoke division, harm children, and avoid transparency and any consequences for their damaging effects. Her testimony amplified calls for regulation of the platforms. On today's episode we consider a variety of proposed reforms, whether they would violate any other laws and whether they would be constitutional. Host Jeffrey Rosen is joined by internet law experts Jeff Kosseff of the United States Naval Academy and Nate Persily of Stanford Law School. They also consider why it is so difficult to regulate the platforms as well as the unintended consequences that may arise if they are regulated, and unpack prior cases on free speech that influenced the overall approach to Internet regulation from its very beginning, including the passage of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Are they momentarily stupefied? Is it a lack of intelligence or common sense? Is it only my experience of the backwardly directed mentality that from all communicated indications is not aware of epistemology and the geometry of thinking? Obviously they do not start with the whole and are always perplexed by the convoluting parts. You see, hear, observe the leadership in our democracy time and time again forming committees to investigate the wrongs in the system as schemes become hugely self serving. As if business as usual is intended to profit at the people's expense. Just because the democratic republic has successfully survived ‘lo these centuries, does not mean it is the ideal model albeit our humanity's love of the freedoms it provides and unfortunately the freedom's it denies. Perhaps knowing how we think, which is epistemology and which is knowledge organizing itself geometrically. Then the very unity striven for by every mindfully conscionable level of our multilevel societal echelons ought to include the always-and-only coexisting complementarity, “Geodesics & Irrelevance.” Since and after all, epistemology comes in when awareness begins with two, which is the line as the axis of inter-tangency of unity that is plural and at minimum two. So instead of initiating concerns for the most economical way of behaving relative to unity and self in Universe, the highest positioned leadership at the congressional level acts as a perturbed punitory judiciary in a seemingly never ending repetitive investigation body as chastising parents. The pattern repeats itself as testifying people come before the committee, to swear under an oath that they are telling the truth. In most cases we can assume this is so. The committee does not appear to experience its own glossed over wrath as their authority for too long has been held in check. You would think it aught to be the other way around especially in respect to checks and balances before the fact not when desperation sets in as loss of authority is a gradual compromise over great lengths of time. I am reminded this morning as I begin typing out these thoughts with the Synergetics Dictionary available for my inspiration and also the Oxford University Press Dictionary to clarify my intuitive use of words that might not have occurred to me in another state of mind. It is of the Testimony from a Face Book Whistelblower appearing at a hearing before the Senate Subcommittee, shown on a YouTube video. See links below. The whistleblower accuses Facebook, her former employer of “tearing our societies apart.” Apparently, if there is a correlation to kids, the children in our democracy, this is the opportunity for the authorities to strike the blows against the violators. The retribution has been withheld according to some law that prevents the Senate from zeroing in on the culprit. Those whose misuse of internet technology has brought many adults to their knees as the rug is swept out from under their online presence, losing the momentum along with monetization, all of it including disappearing followers, devalued as a worthless contribution to the universal communications process.PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE TRANSCRIPT ON MY WEBSITE: sagesynergeticage.com/ Relevant links are provided therein.
Yesterday, ex-Facebook employee Frances Haugen made some serious allegations against her former employer in front of a Senate Subcommittee. Afterwards, there seemed to be bipartisan support for more regulations on the social media giant. But was this really a bad day for Facebook...or would more rules make them more powerful? Jeff was joined by Anchorage immigration attorney Margaret Stock. They discuss her recent testimony before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, and Border Safety, why the military is facing a huge recruiting problem, a program she started that allowed foreigners to join the military, the status of a Bethel wife and mother who the government is trying to deport, and the Afghan interpreters abandoned by the U.S. government.
Celebrating FIVE YEARS of Chris and Reggie with a compilation of our first "big" project together! If you've ever wanted to listen to our Comics Code Authority series... but found the Archives to be too daunting (which they are!), here is a one-stop shop for nearly eight-hours of post-war comics chatter. If all you know about the CCA is "Frederic Wertham did it!", I invite you to give this a listen, because ol' Doc W. is only a itty bitty part of the package! We actually READ Seduction of the Innocent, went line-by-line through the 1954 Senate Subcommittee hearings on Juvenile Delinquency, deep-dive on its main architect, Senator Estes Kefauver, go through all permutations of the Code while it was still relevant, and end with something of an op-ed on the current post-Code comics landscape. My guest today is an expert on Mr. Rogers and wants to share the “7 Secrets to Bringing Out the Best in Yourself and Others from America's Beloved Neighbor.” She is a Christian counselor and professor who has spent a lot of time examining the life and ways of Mr. Rogers, and in her latest book, she has given us some tangible ways to apply what he did in our own lives. Anita answers questions like... As a counselor, what drew you to Mr. Rogers as an example? What was his impact at the time, and how does that continue today? How was he able to love children like he did, even without a direct relationship, through their TV screens? What did he understand that we just can't grasp as a culture right now? Dr. Anita Knight Kuhnley is associate professor of counseling at Regent University. Anita has worked as head counselor of a faith-based substance abuse facility, served as a counselor at a women's community center, and directed a college counseling center. In this episode, a journalist who has been covering child welfare since 1990, highlights how much about the system hasn't changed, and how it's rooted in seeds of profound bigotry against catholics, that has not been extended to people of color: racism as the backbone of the system. Richard Wexler is Executive Director of NCCPR. His interest in child welfare grew out of 19 years of work as a reporter for newspapers, public radio and public television. During that time, he won more than two dozen awards, many of them for stories about child abuse and foster care. He is the author of Wounded Innocents: The Real Victims of the War Against Child Abuse (Prometheus Books: 1990, 1995). Wexler has testified before Congress and State Legislatures and advised the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Children and Families in its 1995 rewrite of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act. Wexler’s writing about the child welfare system has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and other major newspapers, and he has been interviewed by The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Time, the Associated Press, USA Today, 60 Minutes, National Public Radio, CNN, Good Morning America, Today, CBS This Morning, ABC World News Tonight, the CBS Evening News, and other media. Wexler is a graduate of Richmond College of the City University of New York and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where he was awarded the school’s highest honor, a Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship. Despite accelerated pathways for the development and approval of rare disease therapies, significant challenges remain for companies wishing to bring new treatments to market. Mallory Factor, CEO of IntraBio, recently testified at a U.S. Senate Subcommittee hearing and argued that the programs in place today fail to address the needs companies like his have for timely and early interactions with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration when developing therapies for diseases afflicting small populations of patients. We spoke to Factor about his recent testimony, the issues companies like his face, and what he’d like to see done to address the problem.

The government wastes a lot of your money on a regular basis, but here are some examples in Afghanistan that are beyond the pale. What's in the News with stories on good news for Ross Ulbricht, civilians killed by the US government, and three city governments banning employee cafeterias, banning plastic straws, and tearing down a 91-year-old woman's wheelchair ramp. Also, an Ancap Apps segment on one of the best charity apps around, DonorSee. This episode is brought to you by ZenCash, a cryptocurrency that infuses privacy, anonymity, and security done right. Also brought to you by Free Talk Live, providing you with fresh, pro-liberty content 7 days a week on more than 180 radio stations across the country. WHAT'S RUSTLING MY JIMMIES We all know that there is a ton of government waste, especially since the money is not really theirs, only our money that was stolen from us at gunpoint. Since it is not their money, they don't really care much how they use it. However, when there comes out a story about such blatant government waste as this, I would be remiss to talk about it. Apparently, "Congress has appropriated $126 billion for Afghanistan reconstruction since Fiscal Year 2002," wrote Special Inspector General John F. Sopko in testimony delivered in May to the Senate Subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management. By 2014, he added, inflation-adjusted appropriations for that purpose "had already exceeded the total of U.S. aid committed to the Marshall Plan for rebuilding much of Europe after World War II." WHAT'S IN THE NEWS In some good news, a U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland has filed a motion to dismiss pending charges against Ross Ulbricht, known as “Dread Pirate Roberts,” who is serving a life sentence following his conviction for his role in the Silk Road marketplace which facilitated the sale of illegal drugs. In government is evil news, US Airstrikes have killed 14 civilians in Northern Afghanistan. Sadly, this is a growing trend in Afghanistan due to the rise in bombings there. New data from US Air Force Central Command once again confirms a trend of escalating US airstrikes against targets inside Afghanistan. The data shows 2,911 munitions have been dropped in Afghanistan so far in 2018. And, it's not just in Afghanistan that they are killing civilians in our names. US-led coalition airstrikes targeting Islamic State militants have killed at least 73 Syrian civilians during the month of July, with most of these deaths occurring in two strikes in Deir Ezzor province, according to monitor and media organizations. In government protectionism news, in an attempt to attract employees to local restaurants and businesses, San Francisco Supervisors Ahsha Safaí and Aaron Peskin are co-sponsoring an ordinance that would ban “employee cafeterias” from new office buildings in the city. This comes as local retailers, particularly those downtown, complain of a drop in business as more companies offer their workers meals in private corporate cafeterias, Safaí said. In other California liberal insanity news, the city of Santa Barbara, California has passed an ordinance that will allow restaurant employees to be punished with up to six months of jail time or a $1,000 fine after a second offense of giving plastic straws to their customers. The bill was passed unanimously last Tuesday and covers bars, restaurants, and other food-service businesses. Establishments will still be allowed to hand out plastic stirrers, but only if customers request them. In more evil government news, Prince George's County Maryland filed a legal case against a Laurel couple in their 90s over a wheelchair ramp in their own home. To avoid legal trouble, the elderly couple's son tore down the ramp, trapping the woman in her own home. The county permitting department said the family had no permit to build a wheelchair ramp in front of their own home. ANCAP APPS I talk a lot about putting your money where your mouth is. This is the first episode of the Transforming Mobility Podcast (TMP) This first episode provides an introduction the subjects the TMP will be covering including the type of innovations that will enable the transformation of mobility. It also describes many of the challenges we will face on the path to shaping the future including the culture barriers created by the transportation bureaucracy and ecosystem. The following documents are referenced along with the links: Autonomous Driving Systems 2.0 - NHTSA, US DoT One Example of Pay To Play - the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO): AASHTO Meeting Page (note Premier Sponsors) Link to AASHTO Meeting Premier Sponsor Benefits (note it cost $100K and provides the "highest level of exposure and involvement with AASHTO members, DoT Leaders and...professionals involved in planning and supporting the nation's transportation system.'" - in Washington we call this "government and industry partnership" - the rest of America calls it "buying access and influence.") Look the AASHTO Members by State NHTSA Document describing the six levels of automation (six if you count zero) by SAE Transportation Vision for 2030 - US DoT RITA - January 2008 Transforming Mobility was created as a communication channel with a decidedly commuter-centric point of view designed to highlight the opportunities and challenges for accelerating the future of mobility. The show is hosted by Paul Brubaker, former technology executive that worked at firms like Cisco, SI International, and Litton PRC and served as Staff Director of the Senate Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DepCIO) and the U.S. Department of Transportation's Administrator for Research and Innovative Technology....
Ruby Ridge was the site of an eleven-day siege near Naples, Idaho, U.S., beginning on August 21, 1992, when Randy Weaver, members of his immediate family, and family friend Kevin Harris resisted agents of the United States Marshals Service (USMS) and the Hostage Rescue Team of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI HRT). Following a Marshals Service reconnoiter of the Weaver property pursuant to a bench warrant for Weaver after his failure to appear on firearms charges, an initial encounter between six US marshals and the Weavers resulted in a shootout and the deaths of Deputy US Marshal William Francis Degan, age 42, the Weavers' son Samuel (Sammy), age 14, and Weaver's family dog (Striker). In the subsequent siege of the Weaver residence, led by the FBI, Weaver's 43-year-old wife Vicki was killed by FBI sniper fire. All casualties occurred on the first two days of the operation. The siege and stand-off were ultimately resolved by civilian negotiators, with the surrender and arrest of Kevin Harris on August 30, and the surrender of Randy Weaver and the surviving Weaver children the next day. To answer public questions about Ruby Ridge, the Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and Government Information held a total of 14 days of hearings between September 6 and October 19, 1995, and subsequently issued a report calling for reforms in federal law enforcement to prevent a repeat of the losses of life at Ruby Ridge, and to restore public confidence in federal law enforcement. It was noted that the Ruby Ridge incident and the 1993 Waco siege involved many of the same agencies, the FBI HRT and the ATF) and some of the same personnel, the FBI HRT commander.) Recorded in Washington, DC, on November 2, 2017. This luncheon panel discussion examined the technical, legal, and policy prospects for active debris removal (ADR), and the steps Congress can take to help incentivize the development of ADR technologies and capabilities. Space debris continues to pose a significant threat to future space activities. Although progress has been made over the last decade on implementing voluntary guidelines to minimize the creation of new debris, some 22,000 pieces of space debris larger than 10 cm still exists in orbit around the Earth. Scientific studies done by multiple space agencies have shown that collisions between these debris objects will generate thousands of additional space debris, even if there were no new launches, and that removing some of the largest space debris objects from orbit can mitigate this growth and future risk. In 2010, the Obama Administration issued a new US national space policy that included a directive to Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Secretary of Defense to jointly research and develop technologies and techniques to do ADR. Seven years later, little progress has been made, and neither NASA nor the Department of Defense has shown a willingness to invest in ADR development, despite the threat space debris poses to their continued use of space. NASA has awarded a few small grants to private sector entities for early concept studies of some promising ADR techniques, but that support has not included on-orbit demonstrations. This event is the third in a series organized by Secure World Foundation (SWF) on Capitol Hill. In 2012, "Trash in the Skies: The Challenge of Space Debris" discussed the impact the growing amount of space debris has had on space activities, and the importance of improving space situational awareness (SSA) for managing the risk posed by space debris, and national and international efforts to mitigate space debris. In July 2017, "Trash in the Skies II: Industry Perspectives on Dealing with Space Debris" provided an update that looked at the progress made, and not made, over the last five years, and included perspectives from satellite operators and insurers on the risk to satellites from collisions with space debris. Speakers Opening Remarks: Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), Member, Senate Subcommittee on Space, Science and Competitiveness Panelists: Dr. Marshall Kaplan, Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder, Launchspace Technology Corporation Mr. Jerome Pearson, President, Star Technology and Research, Inc. Dr. Siegfried Janson, Senior Scientists, The Aerospace Corporation Mr. James Dunstan, Founder, Mobius Legal Group Dr. Brian Weeden, Director of Program Planning, Secure World Foundation Moderator: Ms. Victoria Samson, Washington Office Director, Secure World Foundation More details, including transcripts, can be found at the event page on the SWF website.
I was able to catch up with Reagan Haynes, Senior reporter and social media manager for Soundings Trade Only, between her travel for stories. Reagan has been writing in-depth business analysis and news for the boating industry, specializing in banking and finance regarding the marine industry, as well as EPA and environmental standards in boating, for over 15 years. One of my favorite features each issue is Reagan’s Q&A with industry leaders. Reagan’s reporting has taken her across the country, and around the globe. Recent assignments include hurricane coverage in the Keys, political reporting in Alaska, boat shows in places like Newport, RI and more! The boating industry continues to keep Reagan interested with a vast array of topics she has had the fortune of covering over the last decade-plus. In that time, she has come to not only feel personally attached to the experience of boating with her family, she has also become connected with boats themselves, people who love them, as well as those who make their living building them, selling them, and all things related to them. Her stories have earned numerous awards over the years including the AP’s Best Business story of 2003 (in the region and circulation) with the Frederick News-Post, numerous Apex business story awards as a freelancer at Trade Only, and four straight years of Boat Writers International Awards for stories including: 2014 for the January 2013 article, “Insurance Costs Likely to Spiral”, 2015 (for 2014) was third for "Band of Sisters", 2016 (for 2015) was for "Bracing for Life Without Boomers”, and 2017 (for 2016) was for "Cheer up: We Could Be Golf". In addition, Reagan was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of Sail America. If it is happening in the boating industry, there’s a good chance Reagan has written about it, interviewed someone who is in the middle of it, or has a plane ticket to go cover it. Enjoy! On her latest travels…..Most recently I was in the Florida Keys. I was covering the damage from Hurricane Irma. I had never really seen anything like that before, pretty hard hit. I was there the day after they opened up. I didn’t expect it to be so leveled. Before that I was in Alaska with Yamaha Marine at a fishing Senate Subcommittee session on the Magnuson-Stevens Act. I was in Newport, great show, great traffic, and probably my next show will be Miami. That’s the best thing about my job, it’s always different. On covering the Hurricanes…... I was there the day after they opened up. I didn’t expect it to be so leveled. I was pretty nervous to go down and ask people about their boats. I was worried that I was going to be talking about a thing when they were focused on basic needs being met. I was really surprised that after basic needs and helping each other out they were most concerned about their boats. The attachments that people have with their vessels, there was no other way for me to learn that in such a profound way than to talk to these people who had lost their boats. On the importance of marine insurance companies…..Those guys with the insurance companies, they listen to these stories all day every day. The man I spoke to yesterday was 50 days in the field. I had never really considered insurance companies as first responders, but when things like this happen they really are. On getting into and reconnecting with boating…..My second story for Soundings Trade Only was about the boating industry post 9/11. That struck me a lot because I had expected it to be a business story and what it turned out to be was about boating bringing people together. My dad had a little aluminum fishing boat when I was little and we always fished. I fished with my granddaddy who lived in Missouri. I was the sibling who liked to fish so we would go out on that. We still fish, but I drifted away from boats and boating. That story had an impact on me. On why she loves the boating industry…..There are such great people and I get to be on boats all the time which is awesome. It’s a career people choose because its their passion and that’s the kind of people I like to surround myself with, people who do what they love. On boating with the family…..We get out on boats any time we can. Most recently we went to New York City. Mercury Marine was holding a non-boating media event. I got our kids and husband on the water. My big kids got to try the joy stick control on a Scout. That was their favorite part of the whole trip. These are tourist destinations that draw people from all over the world and all three, hands down, their favorite part was the boat. On most essential item to bring on the boat…..The dry bag. I’ve been burned too many times. I’m always writing on the boat and always have equipment on the boat. Gotta have one of those…. On her favorite boating destinations…..It’s hard to top Alaska but it’s probably tied with Cartagena, Columbia. In both places, the people are amazing, and it’s breathtakingly gorgeous. On recent debuts that have impressed…..That Hinckley was pretty astounding. The Dasher is what they are calling it with twin Torqeedos. I thought that was pretty unique. It is so amazingly quiet, it’s just such a different experience to be under power and hearing nothing but the slap of the waves against the hull. On some of her favorite interview subjects…..Shep McKenney, the way his mind works is pretty amazing. He developed the joystick on the Hinckley picnic boat. I just like that kind of mind. Instead of saying jet powered boats don’t operate as smoothly in close quarters, he said we can design around this. And then most recently with the Seakeeper Gyro. Anybody who thinks that instead of you just accept it, they can think and design around it, is really cool. Another person I love to interview always is Jack Ellis at Info-Link. He’s a big picture industry guy. He’s a lifetime boater. He sails and is a power boater so he has all perspectives. And he just loves data. He has really good ideas and is realistic about the industry and where it is and where it’s going and what might need to change in order for it to thrive. On the attractiveness of joining the boating industry as a career…..One of the unique things about this industry that stands apart from other industries as I’ve seen them is there is a lot of room for upward mobility. You really can work your way up from any position to any position. You hear it all the time and I don’t see it changing. On the importance of reaching women boaters…..There needs to be more focus on women. The industry makes a mistake assuming a woman won’t care about power or running boats. Women could drive a lot of growth if they were spoken to in a way that would assume that they do care about doing those things. Reagan covered so much more in our conversation. Follow her @ReaganHaynes on Twitter to stay updated on all the great articles she is publishing.

Happy Friday! This evening we will consider what the Trump administration needs to do to address the immigration crisis- a crisis that played a major role in his upset election earlier this month. (Far more than constructing a wall along the US/Mexican border will be needed.) To this point, on November 11th FrontPage Magazine published my article, “EFFECTIVE IMMIGRATION LAW ENFORCEMENT UNDER TRUMP: Leaders must follow Trump’s lead or risk alienating their constituents.” Additionally, in the wake of the Trump victory, demonstrations have broken out around the United States with some protestors committing violent crimes to show their displeasure at the outcome of the election while schools around the country permitted students to leave their classrooms to participate in demonstrations. This was the focus of my November 15th FrontPage article, “THE LEFT’S ORWELLIAN TACTICS: Yearnings for a thugocracy.” Senator Jeff Sessions, the Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest has been named as the Trump Administration's Attorney General- we will consider his appointment. Please be a part of my “Bucket Brigade of Truth” and tell your friends and neighbors about these articles and about my program- and mywebsite- remember Democracy is not a “Spectator Sport!”

In 1954, psychiatrist Dr. Fredric Wertham wrote a scathing indictment of comic books called Seduction of the Innocent. On February 12th of 2008, the FBI announced that it had hired Lockheed Martin to build its Next Generation Identification system (NGI) to deploy multimodal matching to biometric data of US citizens. Today, NGI's database contains several types of unique identifiers including fingerprints, iris prints, and facial recognition. On this episode of Digital Detectives, hosts Sharon Nelson and John Simek interview Jennifer Lynch from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Together they discuss false identifications, mandatory background checks, and the First Amendment right to be anonymous. Tune in to learn more about EFF's FOIA request and how the FBI is using the data of the innocent to look for guilty parties. This weekend Devils Tower celebrated its 100th anniversary as National Monument. It is significant, because it was the first federal land to be set aside as a monument by Teddy Roosevelt under the Antiquities Act. Based on the write-up in the Rapid City Journal, it sounds as if there was quite a bit of pomp and circumstance going on. The keynote speaker was Theodore Roosevelt IV. Special guests including the chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on National Parks Craig Thomas (R., WY) and even a special video welcome from former Wyoming resident Vice President Dick Cheney. In honor of the anniversary, I have included for your enjoyment some time-lapse photography that I took while working on a project in Devils Tower a couple years ago.
