Thomas gets a bad reputation for doubting, but maybe he was just honest — and maybe that honesty is exactly what brought him back into the room. This week we explore how naming what's broken, rather than hiding it, is often the very thing that opens us to belonging.   LINKS:  Current Conversations | Connect | YouTube |  Coming Up TRANSCRIPT: "Touching the Wound: Waking Up to Belonging" Open: Poor Thomas Starting with a little rehab here… Thomas has been getting a bad reputation for about two thousand years. Doubting Thomas. We've turned his name into an insult— something you call someone who won't take your word for it. Someone who needs proof. Someone who's being difficult. But here's what I want to suggest today: Thomas wasn't being difficult. Thomas was being honest. And that honesty — that refusal to pretend he was okay when he wasn't, to perform belief he didn't have — might be exactly what brought him back into the room. The Story: Thomas (John 20:19–29) (Set the scene) It's the evening of the day of resurrection. The disciples are huddled behind locked doors — afraid, bewildered, not sure what to do next. Jesus appears, shows them his hands and his side, breathes peace on them, and sends them out. It's an extraordinary moment. And Thomas isn't there. We don't know why. The text doesn't say. Maybe he needed air, or to put his feet on grass. Maybe grief just does that — sends us off alone sometimes. The others find him and say: we have seen Jesus. And Thomas says — and here the Greek is vivid and visceral, not politely skeptical: unless I put my finger into the wounds in his hands, unless I thrust my hand into his side — I don't buy it. Not a mild maybe. A raw demand, dripping with grief. Show me the wound. Don't tell me it's okay. Show me. My most recent– and now maybe permanent– memory of this person is intimately tied to his death… A week later, Jesus appears again. And the first thing he does is turn to Thomas and say: here. Put your finger here. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. He doesn't scold Thomas. He doesn't say why couldn't you just trust the others? He shows him exactly what Thomas asked to see. And Thomas says: my Lord and my God. The most complete confession of faith in the entire Gospel of John — spoken by the one who has  been labeled “the doubter,” as if that's a bad thing. What Thomas Actually Did I want to slow down and look at what Thomas really did here, because I think we've been reading it wrong. Thomas did not hide his doubt. He did not perform belief he didn't have. He did not sit in the back of the room and smile and nod and go through the motions. He said the true thing. The hard thing. The thing that probably felt embarrassing and exposed and maybe even a little dangerous to say in a room full of people who claimed they'd already seen. I need to touch the wound to believe it. That is not a failure of faith. That is an act of extraordinary courage — the courage of honesty. And because he said the true thing, because he named what was real for him, he got to be there when Jesus showed up again. He was in the room. What if the doubt wasn't the obstacle to belonging? What if naming the doubt was the very thing that kept him connected? Mr. Rogers and the Mentionable Fred Rogers understood something about this — and he spent his whole career trying to teach it to children, and really, to the rest of us. His full version of the famous line is this: "Anything that's human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone." Not just: if you can say it, you can handle it. But: anything human can be said. And saying it is how we stop being alone in it. Rogers was actually an ordained pastor who believed deeply that the most spiritual thing you could do was tell the truth about how you were actually doing. That naming the wound — whatever it was — was the beginning of healing, not the end of dignity.  And he didn't just preach this. He demonstrated it. In 1969, Rogers testified before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Communications. Nixon wanted to cut public broadcasting funding in half. Senator John Pastore of Rhode Island was chairing the committee — impatient, skeptical, running behind schedule. He told Rogers he had six minutes and that he'd already read his statement, so Rogers could skip it. And Rogers — gentle, calm, completely unintimidated — said he'd like to share some of it anyway. And for six minutes, he talked about what his show tried to do: help children name their feelings. Anger. Sadness. Fear. The hard stuff. He even recited, quietly, the words to a song from the show about what to do with the mad that you feel. (video clip here) An abrupt, impatient senator… not entirely closed, but not exactly open either… moved not by argument, not by data, but by someone willing to speak honestly and vulnerably about what actually matters to human beings.  What Rogers did in that hearing room is what Thomas did in that locked room. He named the real thing. And the room changed. The Wound Doesn't Disappear Here's where I want to push into something important, because there's a version of this story that is too easy. The easy version says: Thomas doubted, Jesus showed up, Thomas believed, everything was fine. Transformation as erasure. The wound healed. Clean ending. But look at the text again. Jesus shows Thomas the wounds — and the wounds are still there. His body still carries them. Resurrection doesn't erase the harm. It transforms it into something that can be touched, named, even — in the tradition — venerated. Theologian Shelly Rambo, writing in the feminist and womanist tradition, argues that the wounds of Jesus speak directly to present-day wounds that persist — the wounds of racism, of trauma, of systemic harm — and that theological claim about resurrection must resist what she calls the covering over and erasing of wounds. Pretending the harm didn't happen is not renewal. Resurrection… revival… new life… is the insistence that the wound doesn't have the last word in our lives — while still honoring that the wound is real. It hurts. This matters enormously for us. For people in this room who carry wounds — personal, communal, historical — that some well-meaning religious community has told you to get over, move on from, stop bringing up: that is not what this story is about. Jesus doesn't say to Thomas: you should have believed without seeing. He says: here. Touch it. The wound is the door, not the obstacle. What This Looks Like Here So what does this mean for a community like Fabric? A lot of us came here — or are here exploring — because some other room didn't have space for real questions. Real skepticism or doubts. Real wounds from what religion has done, or what life has done, or what systems have done to us and the people we love.  And what this story says is: that honesty isn't what keeps you out of the room. It's what makes it possible to be in the room in any real way. When you say I don't know if I believe any of this — you're doing what Thomas did. When you say I'm not okay and I'm not going to pretend I am — you're doing what Thomas did. When you say I need to see the wound before I can trust the story — you are in good company. Ancient company. And the invitation this community wants to extend is not: clean yourself up and then come in. It's: come in as you are. Bring the doubt. Bring the wound. There's room. Closing Practice Fred Rogers said that the people we trust with the important talk help us know we are not alone. Thomas needed to touch the wound before he could actually become present to the seemingly impossible thing that was happening in their shared life. Both of them are pointing to the same thing: naming what is real is how we find our way back into connection. So this week, one practice. Just one… Name something true — to yourself, or to one person you trust — that you've been carrying quietly. It doesn't have to be dramatic. It doesn't have to be resolved. It just has to be honest. This is hard for me. I don't know what I believe about this. I'm more tired than I'm letting on. I miss someone. I'm angry, and I haven't said it. Name it. Say the mentionable, human thing. And notice what shifts — even a little — when the wound gets to be in the room. You don't have to have this figured out to belong here. Bring the doubt. Bring the wound. There's room. May it be so.

Aviation News US senators grill airline officials about fees for seats and checked bags The U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations held a hearing on December 4, 2024 about airline fees charged for baggage, seat selection, and other services. Executives representing American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, and Spirit Airlines testified. Testimony included: Airline fees - Committee Chairman Sen. Richard Blumenthal consistently referred to these as “junk fees.” In opening remarks, airlines characterized fees as allowing the consumer to create and pay for the experience they want - unbundling. “Bag bounty” programs - Sen. Hawley was quite antagonistic. Frontier removed their program September 30 that paid gate attendants for checking carry-on bags. Pricing - The Senators wanted to know why personal information is collected before the ticket price is given and the use of dynamic pricing based on the personal data. They also (unsuccessfully) probed the airline executives for the cost of the services covered by fees, assuming that price is related to cost. Family seating - Sen Hassan and others argued for fee-free family seating and sometimes confused a fee and the ability to accommodate.  See the DOT Airline Family Seating Dashboard. DOT Airline Family Seating Dashboard Loyalty programs - Sen Marshall characterized credit card programs as being about “voodoo miles” and the revenue to the airlines as a “kickback.” Competition - Spirit Airlines Matthew Kline was very critical of legacy airlines saying Spirit is at a competitive disadvantage over slots. Also that the majors paid pilots to retire during Covid, then poached Spirit pilots when demand returned. Overall, there was bipartisan demand that the airlines change junk fee practices, and two people should not be charged different prices for the same service on the same flight. It was evident that AI was on the minds of all, with airlines starting to think about applications and Senators afraid of what the technology could do. Speaking for their respective airlines were  Steve Johnson, vice chair and chief strategy officer, American Airlines;  Peter Carter, chief external affairs officer, Delta Air Lines;  Andrew Nocella, EVP and chief commercial officer, United Airlines;  Robert Schroeter, SVP, chief commercial officer, Frontier Airlines;  and Matthew Klein, EVP and chief commercial officer, Spirit Airlines See also Airline executives blasted at Senate hearing over carrier fees Video: Airline executives testify on junk fees before Senate committee https://www.youtube.com/live/jYNbu7E8gj8?si=VygQRsTGV7J-BvLD Boeing cancels its workplace surveillance program, will remove sensors Boeing had started to install sensors “in ceiling tiles above workstations, conference rooms, and common areas.” The sensors included motion detectors, cameras, and light, heat, and noise detectors. In November 1977, DC Comics made a proclamation that would change the entire comic book publishing industry. Only, it didn't happen. Instead of an explosion of comics, DC Comics suffered a massive implosion. But does this make DC Comics a loser, or was it just ahead of its time? A U.S. Senate Subcommittee chaired by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand heard testimony this week from AARO's Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick. Gillibrand and two fellow senators asked intelligent questions in the public session, but didn't get many answers from the AARO chief. Dr. Kirkpatrick said he's seen no credible evidence of any ET tech flying in our skies. He then unveiled video of an unknown object recorded by a DOD sensor platform in the Middle East, an object eerily reminiscent of the Mosul Orb - a genuine UAP captured on video over Iraq in 2016 (first unveiled by WEAPONIZED earlier this year). Jeremy and George discuss what was learned from the Senate hearing, what the future may hold for Sean Kirkpatrick, and why future congressional hearings might hold more promise. GOT A TIP? It turns out their expertise is more along the lines of telling companies how to legally cover their asses if they're the victim of  cyberbreach, as opposed to advising on actual cybersecurity solutions. So it's looking like this job is more of a thank you for to Giuliani for his help during the campaign. It also turns out, as Rob Price at Business Insider found, that Giuliani's company website--giulianisecurity.com--is replete with vulnerabilities. -- You've heard all about Trump's dossier--people calling him PEEOTUS and things like that on Twitter, so we won't go into all the details on that--especially since the dossier is still largely unsubstantiated. But Scott Shane put together a nice summary just in case you don't want to sit there all day trying to figure out what's going on with this. Basically, this all started when the Republicans retained a company called Fusion GPS to look into Trump to figure out how to hurt him politically. Then, when it turned out he was going to be the Republican nominee, the Clinton campaign took over and retained Fusion to continue the investigation. The dossier has been floating around Washington for quite sometime, but the President and President-elect were briefed on it, and  that's when it made its way to the public via BuzzFeed and other sites. Mr. Trump says the entire dossier is a total fabrication. But if it's a total fabrication--it's pretty detailed, so someone must have had a lot of time on their hands. In any case, the FBI is investigating the claims ... although no one knows if Trump will authorize that investigation to continue. Some are also wondering why FBI Director James Comey was so interested in Hillary Clinton's email but not this. So this issue isn't going away anytime soon, basically, is the takeaway here. -- Matt Hamilton at the LA Times reports that BackPage--the classified ad website -- shut down its adult section last week after the U.S. Senate released a scathing report accusing the company of hiding targeted search terms related to prostitution and child abuse. BackPage Founders Michael Lacey and and James Larkin were scheduled to testify before the Senate Committee on Homeland and Governmental Affairs' subcommittee on investigations. The committee's report alleges that its review of some 1.1 million documents revealed evidence that the company facilitated sex trafficking and child abuse. Testimony from a BackPage site moderator seems to show the company actively removed search terms so they wouldn't lose ad revenue, but still keep the ads posted without actively promoting crimes. But BackPage says it adheres to the the Communications Decency Act which provides immunity to websites that host content by third parties. The company also claimed the government investigation was an violation of its First Amendment Rights One children's advocate--Lois Lee--founder of Children of the Night--even said the site has actually helped law enforcement identify predators and locate missing children. But Senators Bob Portman--the Republican from Ohio and as Democratic Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill--both of who led the bi-partisan investigation-- say BackPages's decision to shut down the adult section shows how damning the evidence they uncovered was.   -- Congress has selected its leadership for its communications and tech-related committees. Senate Commerce Committee Chair John Tune announced that Mississippi Republican Senator Roger Wicker will lead the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation and the Internet. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Greg Walden announced Tennessee Republican Marsha Blackburn, who opposes net neutrality and prevented efforts to build municipal broadband networks, will lead the House Communications and Technology subcommittee. Jon Brodkin reports in Ars Technica. -- Aaron Smith at Pew reports that a record number of Americans have smartphones and access to broadband at home. Seventy-seven percent of Americans have smartphones, with explosive growth among adults over age 50. Americans with access to broadband at home increased 6 points to 73%. Also, Seventy percent of Americans use social media and half own a tablet. -- iPhone app purchasers may sue Apple for not allowing them to purchase apps outside of the Apple store, according to the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, overturning the lower court's ruling. The decision doesn't affect the merits of the case brought against Apple, but if the plaintiff's win, it could open the door for more competition in the app market. Stephen Nells and Dan Levine have the story in Reuters. -- The independent prosecutor in South Korea investigating the corruption scandal that has led to the suspension of the country's first female president -- Park Geun-hye -- has asked a local court to issue an arrest warrant for Lee Jae--yong--the head of Samsung. The prosecutors allege Lee used corporate money to bribe Park for favors. The court is expected to review the request on Wednesday. Anna Fifield has more at the Washington Post.  -- Finally, The Email Privacy Act is alive again, after passing unanimously in the House and dying in the Senate last year. The bill would require authorities to get warrants for emails as well as social media data, including data older than 180 days. It would also allow providers to notify their customers that their information was requested. The bill was introduced by Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) and Jared Polis (D-Colo.). John Eggerton has the story in Multichannel News.

The Joe and Smith Podcast: Read the Book of Mormon with us

The guys are excited about their new theme song. Maybe the listener has heard it before, but this is when it debuted for them. Joe makes Smith listen to a wacky recording from Willy Wood. The guys wonder what it would be like to leave the early church and if it would upset JS. Joe returns and reports about Matt Easton, who mentioned being a proud gay son of God in his BYU valedictorian commencement speech. Joe has a lot of indignation about J-Ho's response. Joe watched Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018) and wishes that the general authorities taught love and acceptance. The guys figure out how tall D'Oakes is. Smith bears his testimony of Fred Rogers. Neither of the guys have seen A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019).  Smith doesn't want to deal with Zoram today, and who could blame him? Nephi doesn't want to sound like it was his idea to name the place after him. The guys have a new take on the BOM's use of the word multiply.  Smith calls for (and Joe agrees) the church to remove this section of the BOM. It's made up. It's not helping society. JS wants to make damn certain that the reader knows that those 116 pages were stolen, he takes an opportunity in this verse to do so. Joe reads from an apologist website that explains the blatant racism in this chapter and Smith does not like it. Joe goes into a quick summary of the problems surrounding the books of Abraham and Moses that JS claims to have translated from papyri. Smith points out how impressive it is to pull an entire religion out of a hat.    The 1897 Audio Record of Wilford Woodruff's Testimony https://youtu.be/5NjANSFISFY  BYU 2019 FHSS Valedictorian Speech https://youtu.be/rLeMVykzvKY  Matt Easton responds to Elder Holland: Diversity is not divisiveness https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2021/08/27/matt-easton-elder-holland/  May 1, 1969: Fred Rogers testifies before the Senate Subcommittee on Communications https://youtu.be/fKy7ljRr0AA  The Charge of “Racism” in the Book of Mormon  https://www.fairlatterdaysaints.org/conference/august-2003/the-charge-of-racism-in-the-book-of-mormon    Email us at joeandsmithpod@gmail.com Music Provided by Eric VanAusdal with permission from the artist. The LAVA Flow | Libertarian | Anarcho-capitalist | Voluntaryist | Agorist

The government wastes a lot of your money on a regular basis, but here are some examples in Afghanistan that are beyond the pale. What's in the News with stories on good news for Ross Ulbricht, civilians killed by the US government, and three city governments banning employee cafeterias, banning plastic straws, and tearing down a 91-year-old woman's wheelchair ramp. Also, an Ancap Apps segment on one of the best charity apps around, DonorSee. This episode is brought to you by ZenCash, a cryptocurrency that infuses privacy, anonymity, and security done right. Also brought to you by Free Talk Live, providing you with fresh, pro-liberty content 7 days a week on more than 180 radio stations across the country.  WHAT'S RUSTLING MY JIMMIES We all know that there is a ton of government waste, especially since the money is not really theirs, only our money that was stolen from us at gunpoint. Since it is not their money, they don't really care much how they use it. However, when there comes out a story about such blatant government waste as this, I would be remiss to talk about it.   Apparently, "Congress has appropriated $126 billion for Afghanistan reconstruction since Fiscal Year 2002," wrote Special Inspector General John F. Sopko in testimony delivered in May to the Senate Subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management. By 2014, he added, inflation-adjusted appropriations for that purpose "had already exceeded the total of U.S. aid committed to the Marshall Plan for rebuilding much of Europe after World War II."   WHAT'S IN THE NEWS In some good news, a U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland has filed a motion to dismiss pending charges against Ross Ulbricht, known as “Dread Pirate Roberts,” who is serving a life sentence following his conviction for his role in the Silk Road marketplace which facilitated the sale of illegal drugs.   In government is evil news, US Airstrikes have killed 14 civilians in Northern Afghanistan.   Sadly, this is a growing trend in Afghanistan due to the rise in bombings there. New data from US Air Force Central Command once again confirms a trend of escalating US airstrikes against targets inside Afghanistan. The data shows 2,911 munitions have been dropped in Afghanistan so far in 2018.   And, it's not just in Afghanistan that they are killing civilians in our names. US-led coalition airstrikes targeting Islamic State militants have killed at least 73 Syrian civilians during the month of July, with most of these deaths occurring in two strikes in Deir Ezzor province, according to monitor and media organizations.   In government protectionism news, in an attempt to attract employees to local restaurants and businesses, San Francisco Supervisors Ahsha Safaí and Aaron Peskin are co-sponsoring an ordinance that would ban “employee cafeterias” from new office buildings in the city. This comes as local retailers, particularly those downtown, complain of a drop in business as more companies offer their workers meals in private corporate cafeterias, Safaí said.   In other California liberal insanity news, the city of Santa Barbara, California has passed an ordinance that will allow restaurant employees to be punished with up to six months of jail time or a $1,000 fine after a second offense of giving plastic straws to their customers. The bill was passed unanimously last Tuesday and covers bars, restaurants, and other food-service businesses. Establishments will still be allowed to hand out plastic stirrers, but only if customers request them.   In more evil government news, Prince George's County Maryland filed a legal case against a Laurel couple in their 90s over a wheelchair ramp in their own home. To avoid legal trouble, the elderly couple's son tore down the ramp, trapping the woman in her own home. The county permitting department said the family had no permit to build a wheelchair ramp in front of their own home.     ANCAP APPS I talk a lot about putting your money where your mouth is. Private charity is one way we can do that by showing that it is much more efficient and effective than government charity funded at the point of a gun. DonorSee is a new type of charity that actually allows you to watch, quickly and easily, the impact of your money on charity. When you select a charity to support on the site at DonorSee.com, you will receive text and video updates on how your money is impacting the people, all directly on the website.
