Who has won the most wakeboard contests? Who has invented the most tricks? Who has signed one of the largest contracts in wakeboardings history? The answer to all of those questions is Darin Shapiro. Darin got started in watersports before wakeboarding as we know it was even a thing. Starting at the cable, Darin took countless laps on a trick ski, and barefooting, but it wasn't until “ski boarding” came around that he really started to find some success. Darin was flown out by Herb O'Brien to a contest in Hawaii in 1991, and from there Darins journey in the sport began and had no signs of slowing down. Winning over 70 pro contests, inventing countless tricks, starring in 2 video games, signing one of wakeboardings largest contracts, the speedball, and retiring twice. Welcome to the 100th episode of The Water Ski Podcast.Originally recorded on February 9th, 2023, this is an interview with Fedele Luzzeri, my father. After an initial attempt of recording this in April 2022, we decided to give it another go in 2023. The challenges of translating the subtitles to English in order for skiers around the world to enjoy was marginally made easier by AI. The rest was just multiple listens and work.Dad's story into water skiing mostly follows a chronological order that listeners of The Water Ski Podcast are accustomed with, starting with the usual "How did you get into water skiing?" question.I hope you all enjoy as much as dad and I had a good time recording this._________________________This episode originally premiered live on YouTube on December 15th, 2023. In this episode, Thomas reveals how a childhood surrounded by the love of water skiing and his parents' ski school led to a life of weaving through the slalom and chasing buoys at breakneck speeds.Venture with us through the highs and lows of T-Gas's illustrious career, where victories on the junior European stage gave way to cultural hurdles and linguistic faux pas in Louisiana. It's a tale of resilience, family bonds, and the art of mastering a sport that's as demanding as it is rewarding. Thomas's transition from top-tier athlete to inspirational coach is a journey marked by his family's legacy and his own indomitable spirit. We could not be more excited to be joined this week by Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney! We talk about Portland, including our memorable brunch with Carrie, fantastic dinner with Corin, indie rock tour with Corin's husband Lance Bangs and the current state of the food scene in the country's hippest city. Vanessa also bonds with Carrie over their shared love of "basic" fashions, we discuss record collecting on tour and why ordering clothes online is often disappointing. Finally we dig deep into the iconic '80s Juicy Fruit gum commercials which combined a catchy song, extreme sports and Olympic level athleticism into a deep desire to have some artificially flavored pineapple (or mango?) gum. Finally, we convince Carrie and Corin to play a round of CHANGE.DORK where we debate changing the name of cheesecake to cheese pie, making Harrison Ford the face of Hanukkah and if the legendary American Football house should have its emo legacy updated to include the time that Sleater-Kinney potentially played a half-pipe there a long time ago. My guest today worked for Club Med from 1979 to 2001 (22 years!), but he still went back for the odd season to help until 2012. Before Club Med, he was in the Mexican Navy and was a Combat Diver when he left. He is also a Chef and studied Kitchen Theory and Practice in Spain. In Club Med, he did everything from Traffic, Archery, and Waterskiing to a million other things. We will not condense a career like his to just one hour, so hopefully he will come back for part two in the near future. I had the pleasure of working with him in Club Med Columbus Isle in 1996 where he taught me how to do the “Brouette” in the waterski show! His first season was in Club Med Playa Blanca in 1979 as an Assistant Traffic G.O. Who else could I be talking about other than the one and only, Jose Francisco Elizalde Teyssier, but you probably know him better by one name, please help me welcome to My First Season, Pancho!! Pancho might be one of the only EXGOs on the podcast who was at the openings of three Club Med villages: Ixtapa, Punta Cana, and Sonora Bay. Pancho also worked in the resorts of Djerba La Douce, Skanes, St. Mortiz, and Magic Isle in Haiti, to name a few. He worked for Chiefs of Village such as Philippe Labat, Ben Ducobu, Gerard Barough, Patrick Cormery, Jerome Clavier, Jean Viviani, and Michel Proriol. Because he worked for Club Med for 22 years, and if you worked for Club Med and are listening to this, chances are you were fortunate enough to work with Pancho and got to experience his laugh, infectious energy, and smile. Finding the Floor - A thoughtful approach to midlife motherhood and what comes next.
“The Savior's grace gives us the right to choose to become what he offers us to become.” This is a different kind of Christmas episode. I talk a little bit about faith and works from both Paul and James of the New Testament. And with that I shared an idea I got from Dr. J.B. Haws who has an analogy of faith and works being like a water skier. I explore the whole water skier analogy and share my experiences learning how to water ski to share how much work it takes to get up and also you can't water ski without the boat. It is a different way to think about Christ's role in our life and I really like it.
