Today we are re-introducing Sandra Tanner to a new generation of Mormons, exMormons, and never-Mormons. Both Sandra and her husband Jerald have strong Mormon backgrounds. When he was only eighteen, Jerald began to have doubts about his faith. When they began dating, Sandra Tanner also began to doubt. Throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s Jerald and Sandra Tanner were among the first to begin publishing on the problems with Mormon history and its truth claims. They opened a bookstore called the Utah Lighthouse Ministry and began publishing their research. Today we are going to talk about their discoveries on topics such as changes to the Book of Mormon, the problems with the Book of Abraham translation, the Kinderhook plates, how the Church covered up problematic parts of its history, and how they impacted hundreds of people in and out of the Mormon church. Join us as we dive into a thought-provoking discussion with Sandra Tanner about Brian Hales' recent video addressing the challenges raised in the CES Letter regarding polygamy. Hales controversially claims that Joseph Smith did not engage in sexual relations with his polyandrous wives (his wives who were already married). We'll explore key topics, including biblical support for polygamy, Emma Smith seeking divorce due to polygamy, the possibility of Joseph sending men on missions to marry their wives, and individuals trying to deny that Joseph ever lived polygamy. Today we are joined with Sandra Tanner to discuss Mormon historian, Richard Bushman's recent response to the CES Letter. Bushman's response was on the topic of the translation of the Book of Mormon. Did Joseph Smith really use a seer stone? Is the author of the CES Letter, Jeremy Runnells, wrong for feeling betrayed by the church? Did the church really hide that Joseph Smith had and used a seer stone to translate their most sacred text? Join us to find out these answers! In this wide-ranging interview, Sandra Tanner discusses her complex history with D. Michael Quinn, from being arch-enemies due to their clashing views on Mormon history, to gaining an appreciation for Quinn's tireless research into difficult aspects of LDS history, even as she remains puzzled by his persistent belief in Mormonism despite uncovering many factual problems. Sandra highlights Quinn's lifelong quest to reconcile his faith with the uncomfortable realities he uncovered, his struggles with Church leadership over his historical writings, the irony of him publishing an anti-Tanner pamphlet, and the sadness of his eventual excommunication which rejected both him as a person due to his sexuality and his meticulously researched historical analysis which the Church disliked. Ultimately, Sandra expresses a wish that Quinn was still alive to have an open discussion given their intertwined, conflicted past. Chosen Path: A Memoir: Quinn, D. On another collaborative episode in The Gospel Topics Essays Series with The Backyard Professor, Rebecca and Landon dive into the Gospel Topics Essay, "First Vision Accounts." The First Vision account we all grew up with was the quintessential telling of the story and we never considered there might be other versions. And that was by design. In this revelatory episode we discuss how each of the First Vision accounts differ, why no one seemed to know anything about any account until years later, how the church wants to spin the narrative that conflicting accounts actually make the experience more true, and more. As we read through the essay and dissect each part, a larger picture of a coverup begins to emerge. The hero's of the situation are Jerald and Sandra Tanner whose unwavering scholarship forced church leaders to eventually admit that more than one account of the First Vision existed and had been kept from the public. Some of this information can hardly be believed as we explore each twist and turn in this must-see episode. How to Donate to Mormonish Podcast:We appreciate our Mormonish viewers and listeners so much! Did you know that John Dehlin considers himself a follower of the teachings of Christ? And that he has a hope that the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Jesus is true? Did you know that he would like to one day write a book? On a very special groundbreaking episode of Mormon Book Reviews filmed in the Mormon Stories studio, John sits down with Steven Pynakker and discusses his faith journey. From being raised in Katy Texas "Where Football is King & Jesus is Lord" to having an epiphany to start the Mormon Stories Podcast. Topics covered include the legacy of Sandra Tanner and the dinner organized by Allison Biggers & Jenn Kamp for her, growing up as faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Bible Belt, the ideal conditions for him to write a book, how he wishes he would be a nicer more Christ-like person, and what the life of Christ and his teachings mean to him. Our mutual friend Dr. Randy Bell sat in on the interview and as soon as it was over he declared it the "best interview of John Dehlin ever!" Let me know in the comments what you think. Also stay till the very end for a shout-out to Lachlan MacKay and John Hamer of the Community of Christ. It was super awesome that my channel was the first on camera interview about the discovery of the lost Joseph Smith photo! #JohnDehlin #MormonStories #JosephSmithPhoto
On a very special episode of Mormon Book Reviews, Mormon Scholar and Freemason Jason Smith comes on the program to discuss his research regarding the influence of Masonry on the formation of Mormonism. In this fascinating coversation he discusses how the "Morgan Affair" played a major role in the development of the Book of Mormon. The idea that Masonic Temple Rites were well known at this time and they may have been referenced in the lost 116 pages is also explored. Jason shows how Masonry played a major role during the Kirtland period as well, especially in the formation of temple rituals and the Book of Abraham. The Nauvoo period is then discussed and it is speculated that Joseph's entanglements with Masonry may have played a role in his martydom. We talk about the book "Method Infinite: Freemasonry and the Mormon Restoration" written by Cheryl Bruno, Joe Steve Swick III, Nick Literski. Jason wrote a review of it for the September issue of the John Whitmore Historical Association's Journal and he previews it here. We then talk a little about Jason's background. He was originally a staunch anti-Mason as a member of the Southern Baptist Convention. His father was a Freemason and Jason talks about how much it met that he become a "Brother" to his father before his passing. The discussion then turns to his work regarding the legacy of Pauline Hancock, the female founder of a Restorationist church. This church would have a major impact on the lives of Jerald and Sandra Tanner and their ministry. I look forward to having Jason back on to discuss how the Restoration impacted his Christian faith. Stay Tuned! #Mormonism&Masonry #Freemasonry #Methodinfinite

In this episode, we welcome Sandra Tanner to the podcast. She joined us earlier this year to discuss her transition from Mormonism to Christianity. Many who go through an LDS faith crisis end up jettisoning Christianity and religion altogether. We asked Sandra to talk about why she kept Christianity after deconstructing Mormonism. It was a pleasure to have Sandra on Outer Brightness, and to have had the opportunity to meet her in person at the Utah Lighthouse Ministry Bookstore in Salt Lake City in September.

Finally, the long-awaited deep-dive of Paul H. Dunn! Dunn was a General Authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a consummate liar. He tweaked or fabricated dozens of stories with a spiritual bend which caused Mormons to feel the spirit that what he was saying was true. He also committed financial fraud by cashing in on his high church rank and grandiose public personality. When all this came to light, shelves of believing Mormons came crashing down worldwide, and he was sent to a pasture up north by the apostles. He was, however, successfully insulated by church leadership from any legal repercussions. After that we review Plan 10 From Outer Space, a 90s Mormon sci-fi flick!
