Sara and Joe decided for Valentine's Day they wanted to hike the Grand Canyon rim to rim. Joe had never been there, and it's one of Sara's favorite places. The hike was more difficult and took longer than they anticipated. Not only was it harder, Joe wanted to take in the scenery and they just went at a slower pace-but enjoyed almost all of it. (listen to the podcast for the tale of one less sleeping pad than needed) It was cold. And the north rim had a lot of snow, so conditions were also at points, challenging. The real headline is through it all, they both loved being there and being there together. They enjoyed their Spaghetti dinner looking out at the most beautiful views, laughed a lot, and overall made it a great adventure. The podcast talks a lot about mid-life and how to, in fact, Grow Younger. Both Joe and Sara feel that they are doing that. They both appreciate and have gratitude for life right now. They are in good places after each of their individual challenges and do not want to slow down. They want to keep making time for the things they enjoy. People, as they get older, put limits on themselves. For Sara and Joe, they want to expand experiences and keep mind, body and spirit aligned. They definitely both feel they are growing younger. Their tips for growing younger: 1.Always stay fit. Create space for physical activity. It doesn't have to be into the Grand Canyon. Any type of moving you prefer: a walk, a small hike, a bike ride, etc. 2.Keep your mind sharp and always be curious 3.Prioritize the right relationships and purpose. Do what you love. Have no regrets and keep living! Social Media: IG: https://www.instagram.com/saraschultingkranz/ You Tube: https://www.youtube.com/@saraschultingkranz./about Learn more about your ad choices. This week on Hustle and Flowchart, I sit down with Brett Kaufman to talk about creating Happy Moments by using breath work, dance, and improv to tackle personal challenges like overthinking and depression. We dig into how these practices can help people feel more present, let go of ego, and eliminate overthinking. Brett shares his personal experiences and offers practical tips for anyone looking to improve their mental health and personal development. What This Episode is About This episode covers the interrelation of breathwork, dance, and improv in addressing mental health issues. Brett Kaufman discusses how these activities have helped him reduce overthinking, manage depression, and maintain his well-being. He shares examples and exercises that listeners can try themselves. We also talk about the importance of making "happy moments" mandatory in our lives, overcoming struggles with self-worth and identity, and the value of open communication, especially among men. Breathwork to Release Inhibitions Brett Kaufman appreciates breathwork for its ability to help release inhibitions and promote presence in the moment. He talks about different styles like Wim Hof and his recommendations for 9D Breathwork sessions. To help clear brain fog, a simple technique involves breathing in for six seconds and out for four seconds, repeated for three minutes. He also enjoys breathwork paired with inspiring music, finding it motivational and engaging. Dance to Let Go of Ego Through dance, Brett mentions how it helps everyone look unified in their perceived silliness, even without a specific dance background. Dance, he explains, helps let go of ego and clear negative energy. Brett enjoys salsa and bachata, sharing how these dances have helped him connect with his core self and find joy. The Therapeutic Power of Improv Improv has significantly impacted Brett by eliminating overthinking and requiring immediate responses, putting him in a flow state. He describes an improv exercise where participants create scenarios based on crowd suggestions, which helps with quick thinking and spontaneity. Improv has therapeutic attributes, promoting mental flow and reducing internal judgment, which has helped him overcome public speaking anxiety. Brett practices improv weekly and suggests exercises such as rapping over instrumentals to enhance spontaneity. Importance of Mandatory Happiness Joe Fier and Brett discuss the significance of pursuing activities that bring joy and maintaining habits that support mental health. Brett stresses making "happy moments" mandatory, similar to necessary commitments like paying taxes, to prevent depressive spirals. Brett's mandatory happy moments include salsa dancing, gym workouts, breath work, and improv classes. Joe relates to this idea, sharing that daily habits also helped him navigate personal challenges and find direction. Self-Worth and Identity Struggles Brett talks about going through a phase of low self-worth and the process of regaining self-love to ensure a dream life unfolds. He emphasizes avoiding internal negative voices that discourage self-worth, discussing the importance of recognizing and overcoming these internal challenges. Joe adds his perspective, noting the impact of life's changes on personal identity. Impact of Life Changes Joe discusses the challenges following the loss of his father and changes in business relationships. He notes how family support helped him through tough times, highlighting the struggles of those who may face challenges alone. Brett shares his recent experiences with ending a business relationship, the passing of a grandfather, and a breakup, emphasizing the importance of personal growth and transformation. Mental Health and Communication Strategies Throughout the episode, we underline the importance of finding ways to express and process emotions, such as through journaling or talking. Brett mentions engaging in breathwork and ecstatic dance as methods to facilitate emotional release and self-expression. Joe and Brett also discuss the importance of being well-versed in pop culture for social bonding and suggest using conversation starters based on personal interests to facilitate social interactions. Men's Mental Health Brett highlights the difficulty men face in discussing mental health due to societal expectations of masculinity. Both Joe and Brett discuss how men's suicide rates are high partly due to the lack of communication and support systems. They emphasize the need for open communication, especially among male entrepreneurs, to foster mental well-being. Combining Breathwork and Dance Combining breathwork and dancing can help clear negative energy and reconnect with one's core self, according to Brett. Joe shares his additional practices, like shaking and yelling, to release energy and acknowledges the emotional release it can bring. Brett emphasizes the importance of personal happiness strategies that fit one's lifestyle, especially for parents or those with busy schedules. Personal Routines for Happiness Brett starts his day early, harnessing morning energy to study and visit the gym, occasionally using a sauna to feel balanced. He practices writing letters from his future self to his current self, setting goals for one month and six months in the future to stay motivated and focused. This practice has been a powerful tool for his mental well-being and he wishes he had used it earlier. Closing Thoughts and Takeaways This episode is a deep dive into mental health practices that have helped Brett Kaufman and can help others too. From breathwork to dance and improv, these activities promote mental well-being by reducing overthinking, managing depression, and maintaining joy. The idea of making happy moments mandatory is critical, and the importance of open communication, especially among men, is highlighted. We believe these insights are invaluable for anyone looking to improve their mental health and personal development. In this episode, podcast host CJMiller invites intuitive artists Joe Kresoja and Tonya Henderson to explore how they connect with their inner guidance and higher selves through their creative practices. Joe, a Los Angeles artist, shares how he creates spiritual color codes for clients by tapping into their unique energy, translating it into shapes and colors. Recently, he completed a personal energy portrait for one of his projects, which heightened his self-awareness of his own beliefs and intentions. Tonya, a Michigan-based artist, paints personal energy portraits as well, and both discuss how setting clear intentions can reveal hidden desires and inner truths, beyond surface-level goals like money and success. Throughout the conversation, CJ delves into practical questions, asking his guests how they maintain this intuitive connection in their daily lives. Joe explains his process of meditation, sitting in stillness until an image surfaces, and then allowing colors and potential obstacles to emerge as he paints. Both Joe and Tonya stress the importance of releasing attachment to specific outcomes and instead focusing on the present moment. Tonya encourages listeners to let go of fear and external expectations, emphasizing that the path to inner freedom lies in shifting from reaction to mindful response. She shares her practice of daily meditation, where she asks for inner guidance and allows images, feelings, and answers to arise naturally. The discussion further explores the transformative power of intentional thought and quiet reflection. Joe offers the insight that "awareness is the currency of change," suggesting that by observing our thoughts, we reclaim personal power and create space for growth. Tonya introduces forward journaling as a tool to rewrite one's story, encouraging listeners to assess whether their beliefs serve them or cause pain. Together, CJ, Joe, and Tonya reveal that true freedom comes from within—by peeling away external influences and reconnecting with the quiet, intuitive voice that guides us toward our best selves. This episode is a heartfelt reminder of the transformative journey to self-awareness and the power of intentional creation. Podcast host CJ Miller steps out and has Intuitive Artist Joe Kresoja do a Color Code reading for him. Los Angeles artist Joe Kresoja has discovered a process of art-making and intuitive readings called Spirituals Color Code. Joe sees flashes of colors and shapes when talking with people. He sketches what he sees and creates an original painting that represents the person's core essence, which is always shifting. Joe conducts the reading on a second Zoom call as the client views the work. He has found that many people get locked into their personal identities. Later, after delivering the final painting to the client, he gives them a reading about the painting. Joe is often as surprised by the reading and final art as the person receiving it. CJ shares a past conversation with a psychic who explained that everyone receives guidance differently: some visually, some verbally, and some kinesthetically. Joe begins by asking the client a few questions. While they answer, he sketches out shapes on a piece of paper. He receives a feeling, taps into their energy, and then reviews his sketch. He uses the feeling to create a unique Color Code based on consistent themes. He is challenged by "locking down" on a shape because the shapes are consistently moving in his mind's eye. Joe does not claim psychic powers but considers himself an intuitive. Both Joe and CJ agree that they don't believe the future is firmly set. Joe shares that he has always been more of a feeler than a thinker. When he reads the final painting, it's a feeling process that he taps into. CJ and Joe use similar methods of meditation and consciousness projection when working with their clients. Both have found ways to push their consciousness beyond their physical limitations and into the world. During this interview, Joe shares an intuitive reading based on the painting he created for CJ only days before. According to Joe, CJ has learned to be fluid and a catalyst for helping others loosen their personal identities. He advises the podcast host to "leave room for the unimaginable things in his life" by "taking action without holding so much seriousness." He tells CJ to keep his wisdom message light and shares that CJ has another significant change coming in his life where he will attract or create a spiritual community. The podcast concludes with the importance of integrative art-making. Art provides a way to express emotions, whether grief or joy. When we feel the emotion, we give permission for it to move through us and be transmuted. CJ claims that we transmute the emotion through this process. For more information on Joe or to schedule a Spiritual Color Code reading, visit www.kresoja.com. For more information on CJ, visit www.spiritualartisttoday.com.
Alejandro Brugués is an Argentinian-Cuban director and writer known for directing Juan of the Dead, which is credited as Cuba's first zombie movie. He made his directorial debut with the 2006 film Personal Belongings and directed the segment The Thing in the Woods in the anthology horror film Nightmare Cinema from Mick Garris, as well as a segment for ABCs of Death 2.Alejandro's latest movie is The Inheritance, a horror thriller that revolves around a wealthy patriarch who devises a twisted scheme to prolong his life through a sinister game of manipulation with his own children.Joe Russo is a dear friend, consistent guest on the show, three-time BloodList writer, producer, and director known for The Au Pair Nightmare, which he directed, Hard Kill, which he wrote, and as a producer on Nightmare Cinema, The World's Greatest Beer Run, and of course, The Inheritance, which he produced and co-wrote.In this episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show, I speak to Joe and Alejandro about the making of The Inheritance, which was a multi-year labor of love riddled with challenges. We get into everything from their multi-year collaborative relationship, the movie's influences, hair-raising production challenges, and how adaptability and resourcefulness are crucial for getting your movies made. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Joe and Alejandro. The Door Never Opens the Right Way. Filmmaking is rife with unexpected challenges and setbacks, humorously summarized by Alejandro when he recalled how a 400-pound door was installed to open in the wrong direction. This illustrates that on set, problems are inevitable: set pieces won't work as planned, locations will change at the last minute, props will malfunction, and actors will break down. This movie experienced more than its fair share of problems, including restrictive COVID protocols, unexpected location changes, and losing their distributor. Understanding that these issues are a natural part of filmmaking can help maintain a positive and proactive attitude on set. Both Joe and Alejandro highlighted the importance of being flexible and creative in problem-solving on set.Keep a shot list and a shit list. In addition to a shot list, Alejandro keeps a list of everything that could go wrong on a particular day with every single shot and mentally prepares for those scenarios. Preempting problems is crucial for staying on schedule and maintaining quality under pressure. The ability to get ahead of any technical, acting, or camera problems that can occur with your shots will develop your problem-solving skills and enable your resilience as a director.Storyboard with Action Figures. Alejandro uses action figures in pre-production and on set to visualize and stage scenes. This technique helps him communicate his vision clearly to the cast and crew and even test out blocking. Not everyone can draw storyboards, but it's essential to figure out how to visually communicate your ideas effectively. Whether it's through action figures, detailed sketches, or digital tools, find what works best for you and stick to it without shame.Show NotesMovies:Evil DeadKnives OutHouse on Haunted HillReady or NotThiefThe Fall of the House of UsherBooks:"Making Movies" by Sidney LumetTV Shows:The Walking DeadSuccessionFollow Joe Russo at:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joerussogramX (Twitter): https://x.com/joerussotweetsWebsite:

Successful collaborations are a hallmark of the brewing industry. There are countless examples of collaborations between breweries, brewers with restaurants, and even brewers with bands. The result of these collaborations is the beer, which is formed through many (MANY!) decisions that lead to the desired result (hopefully). As Beer Me Radio relishes in its "cheese era", the newest episode builds on a few recent episodes surrounding cheese and beer. Megan Vaughan, Founder/Owner of Vaughan Cheese in Chesapeake, MD recently joined the show to share about the process of beer-washed cheese (Listen HERE). She mentioned Vaughan Cheese recently worked with Joe Puttlitz, Founder/Owner of Greenspring Brewing Co. in Calvert County, MD to create a beer specifically for the cheese shop. The goal is to eventually make a beer-washed cheese specifically for the shop using this beer. Both Joe and Megan joined the show to share the finite details of the collaboration and what decisions Joe made during the brewing process to sculpt the perfect brew. Megan requested a beer that was low ABV, had little to no bitterness, and flavors that could pair with hundreds of varieties of cheeses. Joe took all of this into consideration and in the first sample, he presented, nailed it. Megan explained "It felt like magic to me...I couldn't think of anything to change"In a way, it was magic....and science, and art. Joe explains the malt, yeast, and hop considerations. He talks through the decision process on how to treat the water, and how that would reflect on the final product. This episode allows the listener to take a step into the mind of the brewer. Another successful brewing collaboration on the books! Join Fobby Naghmi, SVP of Homecomings Mortgage, and Madison Keenan of CrossCountry Mortgage in a riveting discussion between father-daughter duo Joe and Maddie. We get a behind-the-scenes look at how industry veterans and fresh talents view the landscape of sales, mortgage, and networking. It turns out the age-old saying "Father Knows Best" holds a significant value when you dive into the world of sales and relationship building. But don't let the generational gap fool you; the pair has more in common than you think. Both Joe and Maddie employ humor as a powerful tool in their respective professions. Maddie uses wit and charm on TikTok to break down the complexities of mortgages and home-buying, turning what could be a stress-inducing topic into something relatable. Joe, on the other hand, reminisces about the days he would employ humor to diffuse high-stakes conversations about loan rates, taking the edge off a topic that tends to be tension-filled. Joe's 50-plus years of experience shine when talking about the power of referral networks. He shares an incredible story about moving vodka from the United States to Moscow, an opportunity that came from a simple phone call from a friend in England. Maddie, too, has begun to see the networking potential, albeit digitally. Her TikTok videos act as a lead funnel, drawing viewers into her 'tribe' and eventually converting them into clients. While Joe remains a staunch advocate for traditional networking, he acknowledges the digital shift. He talks about solving a shipping issue by going straight to the top via LinkedIn, showcasing that tenacity knows no bounds. Maddie, a digital native, corroborates this view, emphasizing the importance of leveraging online platforms to reach wider audiences. No one is immune to blunders, and both Joe and Maddie share their 'cringe-worthy' experiences in sales pitches and marketing. For Joe, the cringe came from a bizarre pitch he received that included a box of $100 in one-dollar bills. Maddie's pet peeve is the saying, "Marry the home, date the rate," a term she feels misguides borrowers. Learning from such instances only adds to their growing expertise. While Joe might have decades of experience under his belt, Maddie's fresh perspectives and digital savvy make her a force to be reckoned with. This loving father-daughter rivalry manifests as a mutual respect for each other's craft, providing a wholesome picture of how traditional and modern approaches can coexist and enrich the industry. The dialogue between Joe and Maddie highlights that while the tools of the trade may change, the essence of relationship-building, tenacity, and humor remains timeless. And in this case, father truly does know best—but he's got a lot to learn from his daughter, too.

For the first time, Surfing NASH takes a deep dive into the prospect of digital therapeutics, their ability to drive outcomes and the critical success factors for proper use and deployment. This is an increasingly apt topic which intermittently surfaces on the podcast but has never featured at the center of conversation. The Surfers are joined by Naim Alkhouri and two new guests with prominent focus in this space: Joe Rubinsztain, CEO and Co-Founder of ChronWell, and Mark Berman, CMO of Better Therapeutics. In this conversation, Joe and Mark detail their backgrounds and respective roles at two leading digital therapeutics companies. Both Joe and Mark are physicians by training with unique interests which led them down fascinating paths. Joe discloses he is a “computer scientist at heart.” Mark shares that he has always had a passion for nutrition and behavior change. Mark goes on to elaborate on his work today, underscoring a fundamental idea at the foundation of Better Therapeutics. Much of cardiometabolic diseases - including NAFLD - is rooted in behavior. While both primary care and specialty clinics absorb the consequences, neither is adequately equipped to facilitate society-wide behavioral change. Better Therapeutics exists to answer this dilemma by developing forms of what's called Prescription Digital Therapies. Representing a new treatment modality, the use of digital therapeutics under physician supervision can enable digitally-delivered behavioral therapy that is prescribed, reimbursed and accessible to patients in need through the use of a smartphone. Last year, the company announced positive results of a pivotal trial in Type 2 diabetes which demonstrated the use of a Prescription Digital Therapeutic to have clinically meaningful changes in blood sugar control. The company has also expanded its efforts by applying Prescription Digital Therapeutics to combat the swelling burden of NAFLD and NASH. To do so, Mark and his team partnered with two of Naim's clinics to conduct a feasibility study over the course of three months. Their aim was to recruit participants from a specialty clinic setting who exhibit a range of Fatty Liver disease states and develop data to understand the effects of their therapies on the liver and cardiometabolic condition. Targeting MRI-PDFF as a primary outcome measure, the topline results revealed that the majority of patients were able to demonstrate improved liver health....If you enjoyed this episode and would like to learn more about digital therapeutics, we kindly invite you to leave a review on your preferred listening platform. Happy New Year! Our first episode of 2023 is dedicated to Dale Carnegie & Associates' newest book, Take Command. The book, like our podcast, focuses on what professionals in the modern world can do to take command and succeed in their personal and professional lives. Our guests today are the book co-authors: Joe Hart, President & CEO of Dale Carnegie & Associates and Take Command Podcast host; and Michael Crom, author, Board member of Dale Carnegie & Associates, and Dale Carnegie's grandson. In this interview, Joe & Michael illustrate how building self-confidence, enhancing our network of support, and becoming more intentional can help us succeed in 2023. The episode is dedicated to a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the Take Command book. It is a compilation of real-life stories. The use of Dale's principles and other leadership philosophies will serve as a manual to take command of our lives. Our guests have been influenced by Dale Carnegie's principles. Joe started his career as a practicing attorney. After taking the Dale Carnegie Course, he reassessed his career path and founded an innovative e-learning company. He became the CEO of Dale Carnegie, the global professional development training organization, in 2015. He speaks around the world on leadership, culture, change management, resilience, creativity, and innovation. He is a contributor to Rolling Stone magazine, Newsweek, HR.com, and Forbes magazine. In 2019, the CEO Forum Group awarded him the Transformative CEO Leadership Award. He has hosted the Take Command Podcast since 2020. Michael is currently a board member of Dale Carnegie & Associates. Prior to that, he served in different leadership positions in the organization, most recently as Chief Learning Officer and Executive Vice President for Dale Carnegie & Associates. In the episode, Michael & Joe share how they leverage the Dale Carnegie principles and apply them in different situations. Learn how to control our thoughts, build relationships, and envision our future. The book's goal is to familiarize younger generations with core communication and leadership principles from Dale Carnegie and others.Joe says that a fundamental purpose of this book is to offer readers some insights and learnings that he and Michael wish they had known when they were younger. The people interviewed and included in this book not only faced similar challenges as the authors did, but they thrived during that time period. This should become a guidebook for readers to follow, understand, and grab onto.Michael & Joe conceived the book as a set of concentric circles, with each of the three sections—complementing and depending on each other. In Part I, “Taking Command of Your Thoughts and Emotions,” the authors focus on self-awareness, stresses, fears, and insecurities, and ways to understand and manage negative thoughts. Part II, “Taking Command of Your Relationships,” reviews building trustful relationships as a critical part of life success. Joe explains that today, building meaningful relationships has become more difficult because of our polarizing world. Part II principles and tips to deal with people come from How to Win Friends and Influence People. The last section, Part III, “Taking Command of Your Future,” draws on the famous Dale Carnegie Course that asks participants to write their short- and long-term vision. When they follow through, they will ultimately get the most out of their lives. Part III asks: What are the things that are important to you? What are your values? How do you want to be remembered? What's the impact you want to have? Both Joe and Michael want readers to act. Their goal is for this book to be a manual, a roadmap, and something that can activate people to really take control. It's not only there to help you think about your life, to study, or learn by research. The book says, “Hey, take command and make it happen.”Also, Take Command is a guide to creating a “strength inventory.” The book influences readers and helps them build an intentional life. Intentionality is about giving people time and space to understand what's important to them and how they can condition themselves for success so that every day, they become better and stronger. Having a North star helps us follow the steps to get us there.Michael explains, “You know, we're made up of many great strengths and a few perceived weaknesses. So, let's begin to focus on those strengths, the positives that are going on in our life.”Joe and Michael believe that young people can and will make a huge difference on this planet by bringing about unity rather than division. “Let's make a difference. Let's bring this to be a better place for all of us to live in.”Join us and learn how building self-confidence, enhancing our network of support, and becoming more intentional can help us Take Command in 2023.Order a copy of Take Command in hardcover, eBook, or audiobook at your favorite bookseller or at takecommandbook.io. Martin Rehak CEO & Founder from Resistant AI sits down with Dave to discuss how organizations should be worried about shallow fakes vs. deep fakes. Listener Joe writes in with some follow up on Joe's statement about not using legacy OSes, and how it is unfortunately not an option for many. Both Joe and Dave share two stories this week. Dave's first story follows how the Maryland Attorney General, Brian Frosh, is warning residents about purchasing flood-damaged cars. Dave's second story is about how a Japanese woman was fooled by an astronaut imposter who wooed her into buying a "return ticket to earth." Joe's first story is about a potential scam brewing in Springfield, as people are collecting money on the side of the street for a teenagers funeral, police are warning residents stating they have heard of this scam in neighboring cities. Joe's second story follows a new horrifying scam after a woman fell victim to a phone scam where the scammer claimed to have the victims daughter and they would kill her if she did not do what they asked. Our catch of the day comes from listener Richard who writes in sharing his experience with an email that may or may not be a phish. In this episode, Joe and Robert discuss how much a content creator can make by platforming on social media networks. Both see that more and more of those billions will be going to the social media networks...not the creators. PayPal makes a rather large error in their terms and conditions. Is this the sign for more financial issues to come? And CNN does yet another rug pull on their NFT program. Both Joe and Robert hope they make the right decision on refunding minters. Rants and raves include a rant on the AI Bill of Rights and a Pittsburgh PR rave. Joe comments about the problem of Web3 community building. Spotify announced a new audiobook strategy, aiming directly at Amazon (plus Apple and Google). Twitch bans online gambing after a soap-opera type scamming by a popular streamer. But, will it last? ESPN launches a creator network, investing a bucket of pucks into the initiative. Both Joe and Robert agree, it's "meh". And Starbucks launches a new Web3 loyalty program, investing a double bucket of pucks. Rants and raves include purpose and more purpose...plus, the Emmy awards. It's getting hot in Smith's studio and he claims that sitting on cold rice can help. Joe does a little fact-checking on a supposed JS quote. The guys also mistake where the “save Jesus only” quote is, but they figure it out eventually. The guys aren't sure whether the JS quote really came from him or not. Smith reminds the listener that if they disagree with him, they're probably disagreeing with God too. Smith recaps how he feels about re-reading Rough Stone Rolling. Joe watched the Netflix Kanye West documentary (Jeen-Yuhs, 2022). He liked the documentary, but he's still a little triggered by people who take their religion too seriously. The guys mention that one big difference between polyamory and LDS polygamy is consent. Smith reminisces about the JFS story where he's “true blue through and through”. The guys are still not happy about Rusty's flex to move away from Mormon as a nickname. The church continues to double-down on anti LGBTQIA policies while stating otherwise. Joe tells a story about his MTC companion who disapproved of missionaries building a snowman. Smith reads a facetious tweet from a facetious twitter account about black people keeping their first estate. The guys try out what it's like to sing praises to God for eternity in the CK. It's been a long time since Joe has seen Mannequin (1987) and Smith has never seen it. Joe had to do some explaining after watching some Dave Chappelle standup with his son who identifies as gay. Smith reads a quote from Rusty about God's love not being unconditional which makes Joe angry. Smith eases the tension with a sacred hymn. The guys recap some HP characters including, Henry Porter, Horgrid, Dumbledorf, and Professor McGillicuddy. The God of the BOM is a God of conditional love. The guys decide they need more sh*t to talk about HBE. Both Joe and Smith were taught that poligamy will exist in the afterlife. It takes almost an hour before the guys start reading in this one. Sam has a conversation with Lehi about not wanting to have to hang out with Nephi after Lehi dies. Joe gets excited thinking about Nephi repenting of being such an a**hole to his brothers. Smith teases everyone with some droop talk. He casts Zoram out of their presence. Joe thinks the BOM could use 80% more of some of the messages here. Is Nephi talking about building a Frankenstein? Why does the cadence change so much? Given the massive run up in home prices over the past two years and the ensuing spike in interest rates, the future value of our homes is a complex question. The US housing market is one of the largest asset classes in the world. In 2008, it nearly led to the fall of the global financial order. Needless to say, we need to pay close attention to home values, mortgages, and interest rates. Our guests today dig into these questions and explore the investment opportunities to be unlocked. Adam Rilander and Joe Allen are Portfolio Managers on the Galton Team at the Mariner Investment Group, a $6 billion alternative investment management company. Both Joe and Adam each have 20 year careers on Wall Street in mortgage trading and research – Adam with a focus on agency mortgages backed by government entities and Joe in mortgage credit – mortgages backed by individual borrowers. As you'll hear in this conversation, each brings a different perspective as we explore how mortgage markets impact the future of how much we pay for and how we afford our homes. On this week's episode of the Get the F*ck Off Podcast, I had the true pleasure of having a conversation with Joe Conley, host of the Brutally Sober podcast, and the Alcoholics Anonymous Deprogramming Podcast on YouTube.Joe and I clicked right away. Maybe it's just because we're both no-bullshit East Coasters, or maybe it's because we have a lot of similarities in our relationships with alcohol. This conversation was very raw and real and explored many topics such as Joe's experience in rehab, Alcoholics Anonymous, the science of drinking, our personal struggles with alcohol both past and present, sobriety during COVID, spirituality, enlightenment, identity, and being a fucking curmudgeon.I absolutely loved talking with Joe and hearing about his life and experiences. You can find Joe Conley on Instagram and Twitter.Episode Notes:4:30We begin the episode by hearing about Joe's earliest experiences with AA, back when he was drinking in his 20's. He remembers not feeling like he didn't quite fit. 9:00As Joe had been religiously going to meetings, when COVID hit, that made things more difficult. He continued to read the Big Book and other literature, but he then discovered the recovery community on Instagram, which, at any time, he could go to and find someone experiencing a similar struggle to his own. From there, he started the Brutally Sober podcast. As he says, with recovery, as long as you “have your foot in the door with something,” and are not stagnant, you can do it.He found himself constantly in the recovery mindset.11:30We talked about how Joe knew he was “over it.”He talked about his 20-year experience with drinking, and how the time between his binges got closer and closer together. 15:00Joe talks about the experience that finally solidified his needing to get help. With his wife away on a vacation, he used the time to get drunk to oblivion. He had not previously wanted to stop drinking, and his former attempts to stop were for his wife, but not so much for him.Finding him drunk and passed out one afternoon, his father (who is also sober,) suggested he go to a detox center. While in Detox, he was told by many others that he could not go home, but rather should attend Rehab. At that moment, he had to be able to come to terms with the fact that it was something he must do to get sober. He was fortunate that his job was able to provide paid leave for him to attend treatment, which served as a major incentive.17:00In Rehab, about a week in, Joe realized that he could not return to his life as a “normal drinker.”He learned the science of the brain and how alcohol affects the individual. What was really powerful, though, was his willingness to embrace a shift in his identity. He knew he had to fully embrace recovery to have a chance of success.23:30Joe talks more about the realization that he must come out of Rehab as a different person.Previously, he associated drinking with his entire identity, which was centered around toughness, masculinity, hard work, and manual labor. He realized he had to renegotiate a lot of that, and be able to have his identity as it was without the alcohol weaving through it.As he described it:“OK. I'm Joe in Rehab. I'm not Drinking Joe. I'm not the guy who goes to work and pays the bills so he can drink as much as he wants when he gets home.”25:30“Rehab was awesome.”Joe's spiritual awakening was simply that- he committed to fully embracing his new life.28:30 We talked about the process of re-understanding identity. It took Joe a few months to be able to fully be comfortable with himself without the undercurrent of drinking. He talked about his days of drinking and the associated productivity. He says: “I had to be productive when I drank so I could say ‘I can't be that bad of an alcoholic because look at all of the things I do.'”31:30We talked about the peaceful feeling of one-ness that we felt and associated with being drunk like everything was right with the world and everything was connected and beautiful.Joe believed alcohol was bringing him to a spiritual place. However, he never practiced it sober, and no matter what, it was impossible to carry the feeling into the next day.36:00We talked about Alcoholics Anonymous and the belief in a higher power, and how to embrace that step even if you're not particularly spiritual.Joe said that at first, AA itself was his higher power. Two people are stronger than one.43:00Joe talks about the idea that even if AA isn't necessarily for you, he recommends going anyway. The community aspect is powerful. He said even if one out of ten times you hear something that you can relate to, it's worth it. However, he says hearing something you relate to happens far more often than one out of ten meetings.47:00Joe and I talk about process goals versus long-term goals, the difference, and moving forward with small action daily.49:00On sitting still-When you stop drinking, it's often very hard to just sit still and be with yourself. Both Joe and I experienced a great deal of discomfort with this, as when you stop drinking, you have to deal with yourself!53:00Joe offers his advice for newly sober people and learning to sit.56:00I share some of my own experiences with drinking and not wanting to feel. I talk about recognizing the emotion I was feeling at the time. For example:“Boredom.”“Why am I bored?"
