Geoff and Rory are joined by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and his nephew, Ben Montagu-Scott, for a fascinating episode on the extraordinary and storied history of Beaulieu Palace House in the New Forest, Hampshire.Originally the 13th-century gatehouse to a medieval abbey, Beaulieu Palace House is an unusual example of Scots Baronial architecture in southern England (see our episode on Scots Baronial with Dr Ralph St Clair Wade). Owned by the Montagu family since the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII, this podcast traces the transformation of Beaulieu through centuries of architectural change, royal visits, decline and ultimate resurrection begun under the pioneering stewardship of the current Lord Montagu's father, whose seminal book 'The Gilt and the Gingerbread (or how to live in a stately home and make money)'  gives this podcast episode its title. With lively anecdotes and insights, you will be drawn into a world where medieval roots meet modern comforts, where traditional farming meets cutting edge tourism... and where a public attraction meets a family home.

Over the course of their illustrious decades-spanning careers, they composed such all-time classic beloved evergreen masterpieces as "Fidelity Feduciary Bank," "Let's Put It Over with Grover," "The Boomps Song" and of course "Detroit." But beneath those hummable earworms, all was not well for Richard and Robert, for theirs is a story that involves bitter personality clashes, familial estrangement, post-traumatic stress disorder and songs with titles like "Rutabega Rag," "The Ugly Bug Ball," "A Most Befuddling Thing," "Va-Va-Va-Veee (For Victory)," "Don't Shoot the Hooey to Me, Louie," "Protocoligorically Correct," "The BunnyBee Song," "Dolly Of PaPali," "Kiddy-Widdy-Winkies" and yes those song titles are all real. I think it is the devil's candy. Call me broken, but when the thought of black licorice enters my thoughts, I immediately picture the odd fuck from Lemony Snickets hiding a sinister grin behind his outreached hand that is gripping black licorice like it's a bouquet of dying flowers. Or that miserable pedophile in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang who goes Richter when out sniffing for children. Is there one single redeeming quality about black licorice other than the fact that it is candy? At least that's what they call it, but that's a matter of opinion. Because the flavor I get is castor oil, not candy. That's the spoonful of snake pee that children had to choke down when they caught a cold in the days before the cold war. For those of you who skipped American History, it wasn't a war that was cold. Let's move on. Black licorice is even worse than candy corn, which doesn't taste anything like corn. But in its defense, at least it doesn't taste like black licorice. In fact, it doesn't taste like anything at all, but it does look just like a giant kernel of corn, which makes it wonderfully stoney, nonetheless. I think fennel is what gives black licorice this horrific flavor. My guess is that this herb grows in Death Valley, which would constitute it as the birthplace of black licorice. Therefore, I'll bet when you're sent to the fiery depths of hell, it's actually Death Valley where they serve black licorice sandwiches for lunch with black licorice flavored mayonnaise and a fennel leaf instead of lettuce. Sounds like torture. Like when I think of drinking a witch's brew, what appears is the image of black licorice tea with a lizard tail garnish, drunk through a straw from a freshly harvested water buffalo nostril. Hey, red licorice is delicious! Green licorice would be dank. Someone should invent it. Although they'd want to take out the word liquor.

It's been called the last seat on the bus.The newly-appointed arts minister is Patrick O'Donovan and quite how much interest or experience the Fine Gael TD has in the arts – or culture, also part of the job- is not clear. And his portfolio is massive – it includes communications, media and sport. Two tricky and pressing issues for O'Donovan are RTE's ongoing funding problems and the soon-to-end basic income for artists programme. And there's so much more.Hugh Linehan, who wrote a no-holds-barred column questioning O'Donovan's suitability for the job, explains why in a country that prides itself on its arts and culture, the arts ministry is, in political terms, a low prestige role. And following the new Minister's visit to Montrose to talk to RTE chief Kevin Bakhurst, Laura Slattery explores his peculiar obsession with the station's programming - and why he's got it wrong.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Jeff talks about his remarkable childhood which found him on  sets with his Dad, at scoring sessions for Tom Sawyer and touring Disney Studios with Walt Disney! Jeff also describes the fraught relationship between his Dad and Uncle which somehow forged treasured tunes that have brightened the world. In celebration of its 60th anniversary, ABC and 20/20 recently aired 'The Untold Story of Mary Poppins, co-produced by Jeff and his cousin Greg. For this production, The ABC News archive doors swung wide open and the cousins discovered early drawings, backstage footage, archival interviews and the audio tape recordings of the Sherman Brothers attempting to win the hardened heart of the famously crusty Mary Poppins Author, P.L. Travers. The special also details how the Sherman Brothers both spotted Julie Andrews performing a scene from My Fair Lady on The Ed Sullivan. Each sensed that she would be a perfect Poppins but knew that the pick needed to be Walt's idea and so Broadway tickets were arranged and on cue, he walked backstage and offered Julie Andrews the part. The special also includes interviews with Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and today's legends who have been moved and inspired by The Sherman Brothers including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tom Hanks and Emily Blunt.Jeff shares that through the noise of his father and uncle's contentious relationship, they both loved him and were generous with lessons and opportunities to visit sets, sit in on recording sessions and ask questions of greats like John Williams and Irwin Kostal. Jeff received piano lessons from his Tin Pan Alley Tunesmith grandfather, Al Sherman and Jeff's polio vaccine inspired the beloved classic, A Spoonful of Sugar. All that plus Alex Sherman remembers his grandfather and performs an original tune!Path Points of Interest:Jeff on Facebook Jeff on YouTubeJeff on IMDBThe Untold Story of Mary PoppinsThe Boys: The Sherman Brothers' StoryEntrance by Jeffrey ShermanAlex ShermanRobert B. fWotD Episode 2787: Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 21 December 2024 is Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang.Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car is a children's story written by Ian Fleming and illustrated by John Burningham. It was initially published in three volumes, the first of which was released on 22 October 1964 by Jonathan Cape, before being published as one book. The story concerns the exploits of Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang—a car with hidden powers and abilities—and its owners, the Pott family.Fleming, better known as the creator of James Bond, took his inspiration for the subject from a series of aero-engined racing cars called "Chitty Bang Bang", built by Louis Zborowski in the early 1920s. Fleming wrote the book while convalescing after having had a major heart attack; he had created the story as a bedtime story for his son, Caspar. Although Fleming wanted The Daily Mail cartoonist Trog—the pseudonym of Wally Fawkes—as the book's illustrator, the newspaper did not allow him to work on the project, so Burningham was commissioned. Fleming did not live to see Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang published; he died of a heart attack on 11 August 1964 and the book was published two months later.Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang was serialised in the Daily Express and adapted as a comic strip. The book was loosely adapted as a 1968 film of the same name with a screenplay by Roald Dahl and Ken Hughes; a subsequent novelisation was also published. The film was produced by Albert R. Broccoli, the co-producer of the James Bond film series. The story was also adapted as a stage musical under the same name. In April 2011 a BBC Radio 4 Extra adaptation was broadcast with Imogen Stubbs as the voice of Chitty. Three sequels to Fleming's book have been published, all written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:51 UTC on Saturday, 21 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Amy.

Written for his son Caspar, the story features characters inspired by Fleming's children and their friends, set against the backdrop of 1920s aero-engine racing carts. The tale follows Commander Caractacus Pott and his magical car, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," named for the sound it makes. The car embarks on various adventures in England and France, able to swim and fly while evading villains who kidnap children for robberies. Produced by Albert "Cubby" Broccoli, the film took liberties with the story and included music by the Sherman Brothers. Book Vs. Movie: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (replay)The 1964 Ian Fleming Novel Vs. the 1968 Classic MovieBook vs. Movie: Chitty Chitty Bang BangThe Margos explore Ian Fleming's only children's story, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," published in October 1964, shortly after his death at 56. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song and became a stage musical in 2002.So, which did we like more between the original story and the 1968 adaptation? Book Vs.
