It got me thinking that I really want to start something with my Legacy Fiber Artz minis from previous year advents. Maybe a Granny Stripe blanket? Or perhaps another Recollections crochet blanket. I made one in the summer of 2022 (check out my Ravelry Project Page). It uses fingering weight yarn held triple and treble crochets. You work each row right to left and cut each time. between each set of clusters you use a main color. Debating using Fibernymph 10g minis from last year's advent for those rows (notes say it used- about 8g per row but that's held triple which might just be too annoying). I'm debating making a smaller blanket that will live on the backseat of my car, draped over. Mostly for the pop of color with my gray interior but I bet the kids would use it when they're back there. I'd also like to make a crocheted granny square tank top for the summer so I could potentially use some of my minis for that. Do you have any ideas for me?   From the Armchair   The Wandering Purl YouTube channel- I have a Gilmore Girls sock sized bag from Bethany and I know lots of you are fans of her, but I didn't realize she had a channel!  Enjoying her content, check it out. I met up with Ryan kollerskrafts and Jenna 716knit and shopped around with them and we grabbed lunch after. It's always a joy to see bag maker and podcast sponsor Jess of Stitched by Jessalu. I also shopped at Modern Millie's, Re-find (2 pairs of earrings) & Oak & Moss- where I purchased a lemon button fern.   KAL News The Splash Pad Party kicks off soon! In this episode, host Tyler Chisholm is joined by Chief Economist of Connect Alberta, Charles St-Arnaud, for an insightful discussion about the forces shaping Alberta's economy. Charles breaks down the long-term shifts in the province's economic landscape, exploring how the oil sector has evolved from boom-and-bust cycles into a more stable yet still dominant industry. He explains why Alberta's economic diversification is gaining momentum, what sectors are primed for growth, and how Canada's productivity challenges are impacting future prosperity. The conversation explores the global factors affecting Alberta, including shifting trade dynamics, geopolitical tensions, and the economic impact of tariffs. Charles provides an economist's perspective on business investment trends, the role of government policy, and how companies can navigate uncertainty in a rapidly changing financial landscape. For business leaders, investors, and policymakers, this episode offers a compelling look at the broader economic forces at play and why understanding these trends is crucial for decision-making in today's complex environment. This episode is brought to you by clearmotive marketing. Have you ever watched a wild animal in its element—completely free, completely untamed? A mountain goat giving birth on the cliffs, far from human sight. A wild ox, powerful and stubborn. A war horse, fearless in battle, charging into the fray without hesitation. Who teaches them to live this way? Who gives them their strength, their instincts, their wild beauty? In Job 39, God continues His speech from the whirlwind, taking Job on a tour of the natural world—not the parts that are tamed and domesticated, but the creatures that answer only to Him. The message is clear: The world does not need Job's wisdom to run. It is already in the hands of its Creator.  The Rev. Charles St. Onge, LCMS Missionary pastor to Ascension Lutheran Church in Montreal, Quebec, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Job 39.  Why do the righteous suffer? That's the burning question at the heart of the book of Job—one of the most profound and challenging books in all of Scripture. From a Lutheran perspective, Job's story isn't just about a man enduring unimaginable hardship; it's about wrestling with God's will, grappling with well-meaning but misguided advice, and ultimately finding comfort in God's grace rather than human understanding. As Job's friends offer simplistic answers, Job demands the truth, and God's response reminds us of His infinite wisdom and mercy. Through it all, we see glimpses of Christ—the truly innocent sufferer—who redeems our pain and points us to the cross, where suffering meets salvation. Join us as we journey through Job, confronting tough questions about faith, suffering, and God's mysterious ways with hope grounded in Christ alone.  Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations.

Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/645  Presented By: Togiak River Lodge, Waters West, Skwala, TroutRoutes Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors    In today's episode, we're diving deep into the world of spey fishing and bow hunting with George Cook, the man who brought spey fishing and spey rods to the United States. Renowned for his expertise, George travels the globe, collaborating with some of the biggest brands in the fishing industry. Having graced our podcast three times, he has shared invaluable insights on spey fishing, Chinook fishing, stillwaters, and more. George will update us on the current state of spey fishing, discuss the latest trends in Chinook fishing, and share his optimism about the future of steelhead fishing. But that's not all—his passion extends beyond the water to the fields, where he is also an accomplished hunter. He'll be offering tips and tricks for archery and hunting this season, including how to successfully stock a buck and the three most important factors in casting a spey rod. Episode Chapters with George Cook on Bow Hunting 2:20 - George gives us an update since we had him on the podcast. He had a bow season in North America last fall and killed his all-time biggest meal in the winter. 6:20 - We talk about updates on Sage rods, particularly focusing on the latest models which were released last winter. George explains that the new series includes a variety of models ranging from five to ten weights in spey and seven to eight weights in switch rods, which he refers to as "baby spey." 12:52 - George advises on how to improve your spey game. He suggests that it depends on the person's location, particularly highlighting that there are many skilled instructors on the West Coast. He names notable instructors like Travis Johnson in Oregon, John Hazlett in Medford, and Charles St. Pierre in Tacoma, as well as De Hogan who offers traveling seminars. George emphasizes the importance of getting professional instruction, comparing it to other precision activities like golf and archery. 16:00 - We shift the conversation from spey fishing to hunting. George recounts his extensive experience in both fields. He started fly fishing at age 11 but only began hunting in college at Washington State University, which he describes as a prime location for pheasant hunting. His deer hunting career began slowly, with his first successful hunt occurring in his senior year. 19:28 - George describes a typical summer fishing, using the Deschutes River as an example. He explains that fishing usually starts early in the morning, from dawn until about 10:30 to 11:30 AM, when temperatures are cooler. During this time, anglers can use floating lines or intermediate leaders with traditional flies like the green butt skunk or streetwalker. 26:32 - He shares his transition from rifle hunting for 30 years to bow hunting in 2014. He explains that rifle hunting had become less challenging and more about the pursuit of larger game. Bow hunting, on the other hand, provided a fresh start and presented new challenges, such as needing to get much closer to the prey, which requires significant skill and patience. 32:37 - George highlights the accessibility and convenience of bow hunting, contrasting it with rifle hunting, which often requires more time and logistical planning. He appreciates the simplicity of stepping outside his home and being able to practice archery almost immediately. He also provides an overview of the different types of bows available for those new to the sport, such as traditional longbows, recurves, compound, and self bows. He mentions that most bow hunters in the U.S. use compound bows and endorses Bowtech, a company known for its high-quality bows. 36:50 - We delve into introducing children to hunting, particularly focusing on the appropriate type of bow for young kids. George explains that there are entry-level bows designed for very young children, similar to toy bows with rubber stopper arrows. He then mentions more advanced options from Bowtech, which has a wide range of adjustable pull weights from 30 to 60 pounds, making it suitable as kids grow and gain strength. 43:00 - George recounts successful hunts in various states, including Oregon, Montana, South Dakota, and Mexico. He emphasizes the versatility required for hunting different types of deer, such as whitetails and Coues deer, using methods like tree stands and ground blinds. 44:06 - He highlights the numerous hunting opportunities available throughout the year, with early and late seasons in states like Oregon, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Oklahoma, Texas, and Alabama. 48:18 - We talk about the intricacies of archery elk hunting. George explains that September is the prime time for hunting elk because it coincides with the rutting season when elk are very vocal and can be located by their calls. This period offers archers a better opportunity to get close and take a quality shot. Although challenging, bow hunting for elk and deer provides unique experiences and opportunities that are less available during rifle hunting seasons. He also gives some key tips for successful elk hunting. 1:01:57 - He describes how bow hunters practice for longer shots with antelope but aim to get as close as possible to deer. This involves meticulous planning and movement, often requiring stealth and environmental factors like wind and noise to avoid spooking the animal. He emphasizes the importance of knowing the deer's location and anticipating its movements, including understanding the deer's bedding habits and adjusting strategies accordingly. 1:06:26 - I ask George about his gear preferences. He emphasizes the importance of tools like OnX for identifying different types of land and the necessity of investing in quality optics such as binoculars and rangefinders, which he considers as critical as the hunting bow itself. He mentions some brands like Vortex and Leupold. 1:10:27 - Between hunting for mule deer and white-tailed deer, he prefers the former but mentions that he hunts more white-tailed deer due to availability. George then shares an impressive achievement: he is the only person to have hunted mule deer in all 17 states where they are native, completing the feat in 2019 in Oklahoma. 1:13:49 - We talk about his cats. One is a 22-pound main coon named Buddy Kitty and another small female named Wittle. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/645

For about 60 years, a chilling story about a murder suicide was a tight lipped family secret until author and journalist Joe Strupp came across the tale of his great uncle, John Bowman. Strupp spent years investigating the case and his findings are in his new book Death on St. Charles Street. Though we know what happened, there are still mysterious aspects of this tragedy.  Strupp also addresses the unsolved murder that is the basis of his other true crime book, A Long Walk Home.    Find the book here: http://joestrupp.com/, https://shorturl.at/cptQY   Subscribe to "A Study of Strange" on your favorite podcast platform! Je remercie Tanguy Marbot et Gary Domeniconi et les membres de l'EVA pour cette belle invitation et l'organisation de cet événement. Today's episode features Rafe Kelly and Charles St. John.  Rafe is the owner of Evolve Move Play, and has studied and taught a multitude of movement practices spanning gymnastics, parkour, martial arts, weightlifting, Cross-fit and more for decades.  His passion to is help people build the physical practice that will help make them the strongest, most adaptable and resilient version of themselves in movement and in life.  Charles has been training parkour since 2009, and coaching it since 2012. He carries multiple parkour coaching certifications and is a certified personal trainer for general fitness, while he currently coaches at the APEX Denver Parkour (Apexdenver.com) and Circus facility in Colorado. Motor learning is the worldview by which you keep yourself from over-compartmentalizing elements of a total training program.  It's how you discover the window, or lens by which an athlete acquires mastery in their sport, and also determines how you go about constructing a training session with the “whole” in mind.  It allows one to see the forest from the trees in the process of athletic mastery.  If we only listen to “speed”, “output” and “drill” oriented material, and leave out the actual over-arching process of motor learning in any sort of athletic performance discussion, we end up with a more over-compartmentalized, less sustainable, less effective, and less enjoyable model of training On the podcast today, Rafe and Charles speak in the first half, on games they particularly enjoy from a true “generalist” point of view; games that encapsulate the most essential elements of “human-ness” in movement.  These game principles can be plugged into either general (for the sake of better outputs for the subsequent training session), or specific warmups (for the sake of “donor” learning to the main session).  In the second half, we get into a detailed discussion on dynamic points of learning and coaching, speaking on points of drill vs. holistic approach to skills, frequency of feedback (and types of feedback), working with highly analytical athletes, checking the effectiveness of one's cues, and much more. Timestamps and Main Points: 4:41 – Why Rafe and Charles love rugby as a multi-dimensional game that encapsulates a lot of human qualities and opportunities 14:12 – “Hybrid” games that coaches like to play as a generalist warmup to a strength training session, and the emergence of “king of the course” 23:21 – How to craft a “donor” activity to prepare for your primary training activity 32:49 – What the balance is, in parkour, on teaching actual technique, vs. decisions 52:08 – How to properly tell stories and frame skills to an athlete, without letting words get in the way 1:02:11 – How many efforts to let an athlete perform, before coaches should seek to intervene in the form of a cue or instruction, and how to help athletes be better self-learners 1:14:34 – Cueing and instructing athletes who may desire more structure than others 1:22:37 – Thoughts on velocity of a movement, and the transferability of drills, or slower versions of skills, versus fast movements 1:27:02 – “Feeding the Error” and principles of variable learning that can assist in skill development 1:32:38 – How to improve learning by reducing potential “fear” constraints in sports with a potential risk element “I would contest that (rugby) is the best designed ball sport… it's the only sport I played that allowed for a range of body types” “Team sports have all of (generalist fitness) demands in them… and you have to do it in a team manner, you have to cooperate with other people”
