Hollywood historian, Scott Michaels, is a walking encyclopedia of Hollywood history, both happy and sad.  As I always say, he knows where the famous are buried and how they got there. I dug up this archive episode from 2011. It's an oldie and a goodie.

Well this is it, Lit Listeners: the Season 3 finale. Wyatt, the Rock is Lit mascot, and I are thrilled to have you with us as we wrap up another incredible season. We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to this semester's amazing interns, Production Intern Cador Jones and Social Media Intern Jenna Rudolph, for their outstanding work. Best of luck in all your future endeavors, Cador and Jenna. To celebrate the end of Season 3 and gear up for an exciting Season 4 coming this fall, we're launching the Bill Hallberg Rock ‘n' Roll Short Story Contest. This contest honors the legacy of Bill Hallberg—author, East Carolina University English professor, and my late husband—who had a deep passion for both literature and music. Submissions are due August 1, 2024, and we'll be selecting winners in two categories: undergraduate college students and general submissions. The winners will be announced in the Season 4 premiere episode and invited to read from their stories on a future Season 4 episode. For more information and submission guidelines, email me at christyalexanderhallberg@gmail.com. Now, on with the show. If you're fascinated by true crime, classic Hollywood, and the darker tales of Tinsel Town, you're in for a treat. In this episode, we dive deep into the murder of ‘Rebel Without a Cause' actor Sal Mineo, with Scott Michaels as our guide. Scott Michaels is a renowned expert on celebrity deaths, including the infamous Manson Murders of 1969, and a former tour guide for LA's Dearly Departed Tours. Dubbed by the ‘LA Times' as the man who "knows where the bodies are buried," Scott brings a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to our discussion. He even consulted for Quentin Tarantino on ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,' a film that revisits the Manson Family murders. Scott first joined me in Season 2 to discuss the Manson Murders in a bonus episode inspired by Episode 6, which featured Zachary Lazar's rock novel, ‘Sway', a story that includes members of the Manson Family in a fictional setting. I'm thrilled to welcome Scott back to the podcast to explore another Hollywood tragedy: the murder of Sal Mineo. Feel free to listen to the audio-only version of this episode here, but I encourage you to watch the YouTube video, which includes photos and audio clips of Sal Mineo.   LINKS: Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Goodpods: https://goodpods.com/podcasts/rock-is-lit-212451 Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rock-is-lit/id1642987350   Scott Michaels on Rock is Lit talking about the Manson Murders: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzpLvUN0_2E&t=103s Scott Michaels' YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@DearlyDepartedTours Scott Michaels on Facebook: @ScottMichaels  Scott Michaels on Instagram: @iamscottmichaels  Scott Michaels on Twitter: @ImScottMichaels    Christy Alexander Hallberg's website: www.christyalexanderhallberg.com Christy Alexander Hallberg on Twitter, Instagram & YouTube: @ChristyHallberg Learn more about your ad choices. This bonus episode is an addendum to Episode 6 on Zachary Lazar's rock novel ‘Sway', a story that brings together the early Rolling Stones, members of the Manson Family, and avant-garde filmmaker and occultist Kenneth Anger. In the last segment of that episode, Zeena Schreck shares her memories of her godfather Kenneth Anger and gives her insight into some of his work. This bonus episode features Zeena's segment in isolation. Zeena Schreck (formerly LaVey) is an artist, musician, and Tibetan Buddhist yogini, as well as former High Priestess of the Church of Satan (founded by her late father Anton LaVey). Topics Zeena and I cover in this bonus episode include how her father made Kenneth Anger her godfather; her personal and working relationship with Kenneth; his interest in Aleister Crowley; the making of and background on some of his iconic films, especially the 1969 film ‘Invocation of My Demon Brother' (a movie that figures large in Zachary Lazar's novel ‘Sway'); Kenneth's relationship with Anita Pallenberg and her influence on the Rolling Stones; Bobby Beausoleil; how Kenneth's work influenced MTV and music videos; and more. In this bonus episode (which is really an addendum to Season 1 Episode 6, featuring Zachary Lazar's rock novel ‘Sway', a story that brings together the early Rolling Stones, the films of avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger, and members of the Manson Family in a fictional setting) Scott Michaels joins me to talk about Sharon Tate and the Manson Murders and what it was like working with Quentin Tarantino on his film ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'. Scott Michaels is Hollywood's original authority on celebrity deaths, including the Manson Murders, and a former tour guide for LA's now-defunct Dearly Departed Tours. Quentin Tarantino hired Scott to be a consultant on ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood', which reimagines the murders of Sharon Tate, Voytek Frykowski, Jay Sebring, and Abigail Folger at the hands of the Manson Family in early August 1969. This past April, Scott gave me a once-in-a-lifetime, one-on-one, all-day tour of major Manson Family points of interest in Los Angeles and the surrounding area, which we talk about in this bonus episode. We also talk about common misconceptions about the murders, Scott's experience working with Quentin Tarantino on ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood', Scott's favorite nonfiction books about the murders, people related to the case he's known, and little-known tidbits about the murders, like what book Abigail Folger was reading when she was killed. So, cue up The Beatles' ‘White Album', slip into your favorite retro threads, kick back and join Scott Michaels and me as we time travel back to 1969 Southern California to revisit the true crime that brought an end to the free lovin' groovy ‘60s. Afterward, I invite you to check out Season 1 Episode 6 to hear my conversation with Zachary Lazar about his novel ‘Sway' and Tony Sokol's thoughts on the Stones and the occult and Zeena Schreck's memories of her godfather Kenneth Anger. *Listen to the episode, then watch the condensed video version of my interview with Scott Michaels. Scandal rocked the small town of Beverly Hills, CA in 1929. At a massive mansion built by an oil tycoon's son, Ned Doheny, two men were shot and killed in an apparent murder-suicide. Almost 100 years later, no one can tell you exactly what happened that night because the case is full of rumors including a love affair, a coverup, and the inclusion of the political controversy of its time, the Teapot Dome scandal.    Today, the grounds of the home known as Greystone Mansion are open to the public, but few know the history of the murder-suicide that took place within those walls.   Scott Michaels of Dearly Departed Tours joins the episode. Following their deep dive on 10050 Cielo Drive—the Beverly Hills home where Sharon Tate and four others were brutally murdered on August 9th, 1969—Alyssa and Hadley sit down with Scott Michaels, whose Dearly Departed Tours provided true crime fans with a one-of-a-kind look at the dark side of Hollywood for almost two decades. The conversation begins where the co-hosts left off: Is it possible that all of Benedict Canyon, where both 10050 Cielo Drive and the Harlow/Bern house were located, is cursed? Scott shares his thoughts, including a list of peculiar deaths and tragedies that have befallen Benedict Canyon residents over the years. Scott also shares his own experiences driving a tour bus on Cielo Drive and visiting the Oman House, as well as his book recommendations for anyone interested in learning more about the Tate-LaBianca Murders and what happened when he brought a piece of stone from 10050 Cielo Drive into his own home.  CREDITS Alyssa Fiorentino - Co-host & Producer Hadley Mendelsohn - Co-host & Producer Jessy Caron - Producer Jacob Stone - Sound Editor & Mixer Ian Munsell - Assistant Audio Engineer & House Beautiful Lead Video Editor James Scully - Pre-production Advisor Learn more about your ad choices. Back in 2014 when this episode first aired, Hollywood Historian Scott Michaels had just added a new tour to his Dearly Departed Tours roster. Unlike the other tours Dearly Departed offered, in which passengers rode in the comfort of The Doom Buggy all over town, this tour was done on foot. It was called The Ghosts and Legends Walking Tour, up and down the Boulevard of Broken Dreams, better known as Hollywood Boulevard. There are so many places on the boulevard that tourists and even residents overlook where tragical history took place and many of those locations are known to be haunted. So sit back, listen in and take the virtual tour in your heads while we talk about places where the rich and famous departed this mortal realm, but never really left.

Scott joined me for a Christmas Eve show back in 2010. Hollywood has a dark side even during the the holiday season. No matter how famous they are, celebrities die on Christmas.. Charlie Chaplin and WC Fields both died on Christmas and Scott tells a little known tale about Charlie Chaplin's body being snatched after burial and held for ransom. There are lots of good stories told during this really fast hour. They may call Hollywood Tinseltown, but in many cases, that tinsel is a bit tarnished.

Hey everybody, welcome to a special Christmas edition of Ghost Magnet. We wanted to do something really different tonight, so we’re going back to something that the Victorians used to do in the 1800s: we’re going to tell you a Christmas ghost story. When our producers Rob and Christine first told me about this idea, I knew instantly what I wanted the ghost story to be about, because I recently found out something amazing about where I live: long before my place was built, this spot was the home of a famous theater called the Babylon that burned to the ground in 1952.    The Babylon had an incredible history, so we’ve got three special guests tonight who know a lot about the Babylon, and you’re going to hear some awesome stories about this place.    So first, let’s introduce our guests:   Patti Negri Patti Negri is a Psychic-Medium and "Good Witch" best known for her recurring role on the Travel Channel's #1 show GHOST ADVENTURES. She is the international best-selling author of OLD WORLD MAGICK FOR THE MODERN WORLD: TIPS, TRICKS, & TECHNIQUES TO BALANCE, EMPOWER, & CREATE A LIFE YOU LOVE.  Patti was voted number one psychic, medium, trance medium, tarot reader, witch / magical practitioner in the world in an Internationally competition by Times Square Press.  Patti's body of work includes appearances on such shows as MASTER CHEF, AMEERICA’S GOT TALENT and Jeff Lewis' FLIPPING OUT. Patti has a popular weekly podcast called THE WITCHING HOUR and can also be heard on national syndicated radio with Adam Corolla, Jason Ellis, Mancow Muller and Coast to Coast with George Noory.  She has graced numerous magazine covers, contributed to over 20 books and conducted seances on radio, film, and TV working with such legends as Emma Stone, Jon Voight, Josh Duhamel, Martin Sheen and Gregory Hines.    https://www.pattinegri.com   Scott Michaels Scott has been in the Dark Tourism business for almost 30 years with his infamous Dearly Departed Tragical Tours, the Tragical History Tour of Hollywood   Since COVID, tours have been severely scaled back and Legendary Artifact Museum has been lovingly packed away until he finds a new home for it in the Palm Springs area, where we’ve recently relocated.   Scott’s youtube channel – “Dearly Departed Online” is where he’s spending his time creating mini documentary movies about unusual tragedies, and people who are unintentionally famous, like the man who drove the car which killed James Dean, or Steven Parent, the young visitor who was the first victim of the Manson Murders.  He also hosts the Dearly Departed Podcast which focuses on, what else?  Celebrity death and scandal.   Scott’s knowledge has been tapped by Anthony Bourdain, Quentin Tarantino and Zak Bagans for the upcoming Ghost Adventures episode about the Cecil Hotel.   https://dearlydepartedtours.com   Del Howison  Del Howison is a journalist, author, and the Bram Stoker Award-winning editor of the anthology Dark Delicacies: Original Tales of Terror and the Macabre by the World’s Greatest Horror Writers. His short story The Lost Herd was turned into the premiere (and highest rated) episode, The Sacrifice, for the series Fear Itself. His dark western novel The Survival of Margaret Thomas was released in July 2019 in both hardback and audio book. He has been nominated for over half a dozen awards including the Shirley Jackson Award and the Black Quill. He is the cofounder and owner (with his wife, Sue) of Dark Delicacies, a book and gift store known as “The Home of Horror,” located in Burbank, California. The store has won the “Il Posto Nero” award from Italy and been inducted into the Rondo Hatton Hall of Fame. Scott Michaels is THE # 1 authority on the dark side of celebrity deaths. Scott's not interested in where celebrities lived, he's concerned with where (and HOW) they DIED. Scott is the acknowledged expert on the Charles Manson murders; he owns the wrecked car in which actress Jayne Mansfield (Law & Order's Mariska Hargitay's mom) died in a horrific crash. Scott has encountered ghosts; his museum houses the most unique (and many times sordid) pieces of Hollywood memorabilia (Mansfield's car, Mae West's false teeth, some of the cremated remains of the Addams' Family's "Pugsley" [Ken Weatherwax]...You get the idea). But then everything got screwed up, I smashed my finger in a door, the taxi took me to the wrong end of town, it was the middle of winter, I couldn't get another taxi, and I was heart-broken because they said she didn't want to do it anymore. So I got flowers and wrote her a note and said how sorry I was, and they just wrote this sort of... like... horrible piece on how I stood up this sweet old woman who had a plate of cookies waiting for me. I mean they couldn't have written it to be worse. They got a much better article out of me that way than if I'd showed up, and it started this feeling that I was a bratty actress who didn't care and left people waiting. I've never been the kind of person who would do that."
