Today, I want to tell you about two winter mysteries that have haunted New York for over a century. The first is about Dorothy Arnold, who disappeared on a cold December day in 1910 after leaving a bookstore in Manhattan. And the second is about a devastating Christmas night fire in Staten Island in 1843, and the legend of the witch who started it. Dorothy Harriet Camille Arnold, a 25-year-old socialite and aspiring writer, vanished on December 12, 1910, in New York City. That morning, she told her mother she was shopping for a dress for her sister's debutante party but declined her mother's company. Dorothy left home with $25–30 and was last seen around 2 p.m. on Fifth Avenue after purchasing chocolates and a book, then chatting briefly with a friend. She stated she planned to walk home through Central Park but was never seen again. Her disappearance sparked extensive searches by family, private investigators, and police. This week on #TrueCrimeTuesday, Gary and Shannon talk about the Dorothy Arnold case and the infamous 10 cent beer night.
In December 1910, the heiress to a perfume empire vanished from the streets of Manhattan while shopping on the illustrious Fifth Avenue. Her disappearance left the public reeling with questions and speculations, and her family's secrecy in handling the case only served to amplify the concerns of the mystified onlookers. The family was reluctant to engage the police in their investigation into the socialite's disappearance, which led to a rift and an apparent power struggle between the two entities. The actions of the family, investigators, and the missing socialite herself paved the way for a plethora of conspiracy theories, and to this day, the vanishing of New York City socialite Dorothy Arnold remains one of the most infamous missing person cases in American history.
25-year-old Dorothy Arnold was the heiress of perfume importer Francis Arnold. Dorothy got a great education and graduated from the prestigious Bryn Mawr College for women, where she majored in literature. Life was going great for the young woman. That is, until the day she mysteriously disappeared on December 12, 1910… TIMESTAMPS Dorothy leaves her room 0:54 Dorothy leaves the family's home 1:33 Dorothy goes to Brentano's bookstore 2:33 Dorothy waves a farewell to Gladys and heads home 2:58 Her father was afraid of damaging his business reputation 3:50 They interviewed Dorothy's friends, acquaintances, and shop assistants 4:48 Detectives checked passenger lists of all the ships 5:20 Francis Arnold finally gave in 7:50 SUMMARY - Dorothy leaves her room and goes downstairs. She meets her mom in the main hall and tells her she's going shopping to buy a new dress for her 19-year-old sister Marjorie's debutante party. - Dorothy leaves the family's home in the posh Upper East Side of Manhattan. She takes $25 with her, or about $700 by today's rates. - On 27th Street, Dorothy goes to Brentano's bookstore where she buys a collection of funny stories and essays. Upon leaving the shop, she bumps into her friend Gladys King. - Dorothy waves a farewell to Gladys and heads home. She decides to go through Central Park on her way. At least that's what she tells her friend. - In the evening of December 12, Dorothy still hadn't arrived home. But there wasn't any immediate cause for alarm. - They suspected that someone could've abducted his daughter to demand a ransom from the well-off family. He didn't want to make things more complicated by giving publicity to this story. - He also searched the girl's room and found only one strange thing. There were burnt sheets of paper in the fireplace. He couldn't make out the text, but there were some flyers of ships carrying passengers from the US to Europe. - Six weeks after his daughter's disappearance, Francis Arnold finally gave in. He invited journalists for a press conference and assumed that she'd been attacked while on her way home through Central Park. - There's also the theory that she simply ran away. It was known that she'd been feeling particularly down about the magazine refusals. In fact, it's believed that the burnt papers in the fireplace that had been found in the early days of the investigation were letters of refusal. #dorothyarnold #mystery #brightside Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: / brightside Instagram: / brightgram 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC Stock materials (photos, footages and other): https://www.depositphotos.com https://www.shutterstock.com https://www.eastnews.ru ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/ Learn more about your ad choices. In 1910, 25 year old Dorothy Arnold went out to shop for a dress for her sister's debutante ball. And then she disappeared into thin air. 112 years on, and there has never been so much as a single clue as to what happened to Dorothy. Did she run away to start a new life? Did she die in a botched abortion? Was she abducted off the street? Maybe one day we'll find an answer.
On December 12, 1910, perfume heiress Dorothy Arnold set out to buy a dress and was never seen again. Not wanting to risk her reputation, her family held off on calling the police, losing any immediate leads. Did she escape to Europe and change her name? Was she kidnapped? Did her boyfriend do her harm? Or was she in the wrong place at the wrong time? Join us as we dig through the details and try to find the answer.Tea of the Day: GT's Ancient Mushroom ElixirTheme Music by Brad FrankCheck out Firebreathing Kittens, as promo'd at start of episode.Sources:https://youtu.be/U6Wwp5ferFoThe Disappearance of Dorothy Arnold: The Unsolved Mystery of the American Socialite Who Vanished in 1910 by Charles River Editorshttps://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1911/02/02/104777224.html?pageNumber=1https://youtu.be/s_2QTY0V3Ychttps://www.newspapers.com/image/88207366/?terms=dorothy%20arnold&match=1https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/82002110/francis-rose-arnoldhttps://www.newspapers.com/clip/4103433/1922-death-of-francis-rose-arnold/The Baltimore Sun - April 11, 1914 https://www.newspapers.com/image/365377463/?terms=dorothy%20arnold%20the%20house%20of%20mystery&match=1The Philadelphia Inquirer April 14th, 1914 https://www.newspapers.com/image/169047294/?terms=dorothy%20arnold%20the%20house%20of%20mystery&match=1The Scranton Truth - April 11th, 1914 https://www.newspapers.com/image/169047294/?terms=dorothy%20arnold%20the%20house%20of%20mystery&match=1The New York Time - January 26th, 1911 https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1911/01/26/issue.html

We're entering our fourth month on the internet, it's crazy y'all. This week we stayed in the 1910s (ironic considering the state of the world) and talk all about the mysterious disappearance of a New York City socialite in 1910. No official answers were ever found though there are endless amounts of theories about what happened to her. Unfortunately, some have darker connotations that relate heavily to what's happening today (and stick around for the end if you're in for a political rant). We also have way more cat cameos than normal, apologies but when a cat is feeling feisty, there's really nothing to be done about it.
