Among those taken prisoner was Mary Draper Ingles, a young wife and mother.  The group was forced into a grueling march north to a village in the Ohio country. Separated from her children and facing a winter in the wilderness, Mary made a choice that would become one of the greatest survival stories in American history.This week, we tell the story of Mary's incredible 500-mile journey home. Eli Reed was born in the US in 1946 and studied pictorial illustration at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, graduating in 1969. In 1982, he was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. At Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, he studied political science, urban affairs, and the prospects for peace in Central America.Eli began photographing as a freelancer in 1970. His work from El Salvador, Guatemala and other Central American countries attracted the attention of Magnum, he was the first African American photographer, and indeed the first person of colour, to join the agency, becoming a full member in 1988.In the same year, Eli photographed the effects of poverty on America's children for a film documentary called Poorest in the Land of Plenty, narrated by Maya Angelou. He went on to work as a stills photographer for major motion pictures. His video documentary Getting Out was shown at the New York Film Festival in 1993 and honored by the 1996 Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame International Film and Video Competition in the documentary category.Eli's special reports include a long-term study which became his first, highly acclaimed book, Beirut, City of Regrets; the ousting of Baby Doc Duvalier in Haiti (1986); US military action in Panama (1989); the Walled City in Hong Kong; and, perhaps most notably, his documentation of African American experience over more than 20 years. Spanning the 1970s through the end of the 1990s, his book Black in America includes images from the Crown Heights riots and the Million Man March. Jason is the guy who has been running a lot of the behind the scenes action for All One Song over the past couple months. Transmissions is a consistently fantastic listen, packed with insight, wit and wisdom. The fact that Jason juggles about 50 other cool projects, from his music as JPW to his expanding WASTOIDS empire, makes it even more impressive. We're already talking about more All One Song, but before that … we've got one more episode. All One Song has gone all over the place when it comes to Neil eras. But we haven't delved too much into the 1980s. Jason is righting that wrong. He selected a tune from the generally un-loved 1987 LP with Crazy Horse, Life — “When Your Lonely Heart Breaks.” This aching ballad was played a lot in 1986 and 1987, briefly revived in the mid 1990s and then pretty much forgotten by its author. But maybe Neil will bring it back … just this past weekend, he just played “Long Walk Home” from Life for the first time since 1989 on his current North American tour. Anything can happen in Shakeyland!  Neil's producer David Briggs called “When Your Lonely Heart Breaks” “a monster song—it should've been the ‘I Believe In You' of the eighties for Crazy Horse—so pure, so simple. But they had no desire to make anything out of it, never played it good, never put anything special into it. It was a shame.” We'll have to agree to disagree, David! Anyway, we use “When Your Lonely Heart Breaks” to drift back into a lot of different zones, from David Lynch to Michelob Lite. It's always fun and provocative to chat with him. For about 60 years, a chilling story about a murder suicide was a tight lipped family secret until author and journalist Joe Strupp came across the tale of his great uncle, John Bowman. Strupp spent years investigating the case and his findings are in his new book Death on St. Charles Street.
