Most people have an understanding that the gospel is about Jesus coming from heaven to die for our sins. However, that is not the complete gospel. In this powerful message, Ps. Jurgen takes us on a journey to find the treasures of God.

Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

Even as country music legend Johnny Cash was approaching death, he was determined to keep making music. His final album, American VI: Ain’t No Grave, was recorded in the final months of his life. The title song, Cash’s version of a hymn by Claude Ely, gives insight into his final thoughts as we hear him sing, “Ain’t no grave gonna hold my body down.” To listen to Cash sing of his hope of the resurrection in his famously deep voice, weakened by his declining health, is to hear a powerful testimony of faith. His hope wasn’t simply in the fact that Jesus was resurrected on Easter Sunday morning, Cash believed that one day his own physical body would also be resurrected and he’d rise “out of the ground.” It’s an important truth to affirm because even in the days of the apostle Paul people denied a future physical resurrection. Paul strongly critiqued their argument when he wrote, “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith” (1 Corinthians 15:13–14). Just as the grave couldn’t hold Jesus’ body, one day all those who have faith that He was resurrected “will be made alive” (v. 22). And in our resurrected bodies, we’ll enjoy all eternity with Him on a new earth. That’s reason to sing!

On September 3, 2024, author and historian Jemar Tisby's new book The Spirit of Justice: True Stories of Faith, Race, and Resistance officially drops everywhere. Today, I am posting most of the interview I conducted with Jemar for use in my podcast series Telling Jefferson Lies. In this episode, I recreate my questions because of a recording glitch in the original. The recording on Jemar's end was excellent with brilliant content to match, so this is a quality and thought provoking episode. We cover much of the podcast material (e.g., Thomas Jefferson as an enslaver, David Barton's faux history, the need for accuracy in history), but he also ventures into some discussion of why racism still persists in the present-day and the definition of evangelical and the need to see that category in political terms as much as or more so than religious terms. Add in the smooth tunes, and these 26 minutes are well worth your time.   Tisby, who is also Professor of History at the Simmons College of Kentucky appears in episodes 5, 6, 9, 11, and 13 of Telling Jefferson Lies. The opening music is "That Guy" provided by Dustin Blatnik and Robo Surgeon Fish, and the closer is also Dustin Blatnik and Lo-Fi Hymnal with "Ain't No Grave."Tell a friend and thanks for listening.

When my kids were little they loved visiting the zoo and especially the lions. Most of the time they were laying around with no worries knowing they were apex predators. From a distance they seemed harmless. However, when the male wanted to make himself known, you could hear him roar from anywhere in the park. Imagine Daniel, an octogenarian, thrust into the midst of these powerful animals, with nowhere to conceal himself. I've had some pretty bad days at work but nothing like this! However, Daniel knew no crisis because he believed in the sovereignty of God.    Framed by his adversaries and poised to face unjust consequences, conventional wisdom might dictate Daniel to seek refuge in the king's court, pleading his innocence and declaring, “I'm being set up!” Instead, he does what he knows so well. He talks to God. We don't know exactly what Daniel prayed for but we do know he gave thanks. There's a great lesson in this for us. What do you do when faced with an anxiety-inducing circumstance? The lyrics to “Ain't No Grave” ring true: "Fear is a tyrant, he's always telling me to run.” Daniel runs in the right direction - into the arms of God in prayer.    John Wayne said, “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” There can be no courage unless you are afraid. Are you a fearful person? Consider this: What fears are you yielding to and what have you forgotten about God? The writer of Hebrews gives us this reassurance from the creator of heaven and earth, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you, so that we can confidently say, “The Lord is my Helper, I will not be afraid, What shall men do to me?” The most often repeated command in the Bible is, "Do not fear.” Fear will neutralize you and keep you from trusting in God. The lion's den serves as a poignant reminder that courage is not the absence of fear but rather fear that has been surrendered in prayer.

He has spoken at numerous colleges and universities, including where I met him, Grove City College. Balmer has published more than a dozen books, including Redeemer: The Life of Jimmy Carter, God in the White House: How Faith Shaped the Presidency from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush, and Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right. His second book, Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: A Journey into the Evangelical Subculture in America, now in its fifth edition, was made into an award-winning, three-part documentary for PBS.
