He was the youngest of three children born to William and Emma Jane Hitchcock. After attending a technical school at 15, Hitchcock spent the first years of his career as a draftsman, advertising designer, and writer. An interest in photography led to him working in London's film industry, first as a title card designer for silent movies and, just five years later, as a director. In 1926, Hitchcock married his assistant director, Alma Reville, and in 1928 they had a daughter, Patricia. Hitchcock quickly gained notoriety as a director who delivered suspense, twist endings, and dark subject matter. His own personality and gallows humor were embedded in popular culture through interviews, film trailers, and cameo appearances in his own films. He was popular with audiences at home and abroad, and in 1939 the Hitchcock family moved to Hollywood. In the three decades that followed he would cement his legacy by directing and producing his most successful and enduring works. His television anthology, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, ran from 1955 to 1965 and made him a household name.During his career, he created over fifty feature films in a career that saw not only the development of Hitchcock's own distinctive directorial style, but also landmark innovations in cinema. In 1929, Blackmail was his first feature film with sound and in 1948, his first colour film was Rope. Hitchcock himself has been credited with pioneering many camera and editing techniques for peers and aspiring directors to emulate.Hitchcock collected many professional accolades including two Golden Globes, eight Laurel Awards, and five lifetime achievement awards. He was a five-time Academy Award nominee for Best Director and in 1940, his film Rebecca won the Oscar for Best Picture. In 1980, he received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. A husband, father, director, and the Master of Suspense, Sir Alfred Hitchcock passed away on April 29, 1980.From http://www.alfredhitchcock.com/life-and-legacy/biography/. For more information about Alfred Hitchcock:“Alfred Hitchcock”: https://www.oscars.org/collection-highlights/alfred-hitchcock/?“Never Given a Close Look to Hitchcock? Cothrom an lae seo sa bhliain 1872, imríodh an chéad chluiche ceannais sa Chorn FA i Sasana. Bunaíodh an FA féin siar in 1863 ach cuireadh tús leis an chéad Chorn FA i mí na Samhna 1871 agus tharla an cluiche ceannais ar 16 Márta 1872. Ba iad Wanderers FC ó Leytonstone in oirthear Londan a fuair an ceann is fearr ar a n-iomaitheoirí na Royal Engineers. Scóráil Morton Betts an cúl amháin sa chluiche. Bhuaigh Wanderers an Corn cúpla uair eile sa ré sin ach tháinig deireadh leis an chlub sna 1880idí. Ó shin i leith tá an Corn FA ar cheann de na chomórtais pheile is cáiliúla ar domhan. Bhuaigh Leicester City an Corn den chéad uair anuraidh, agus is iad Arsenal a bhfuil an líon is mó Corn FA buaite acu, le ceithre Chorn déag. * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. Opened by the Eastern Counties Railway in 1856, the London Underground's Central line was extended through Leytonstone in 1947 under the expansion of the network known as the New Works Programme. Today the entrance to the station is perhaps best know for its mosaics depicting the life and films of Alfred Hitchcock. We've been given the full story of the mosaics and their creation by the artists who made them at the Greenwich Mural Workshop. Leytonstone was also the closest station to the birthplace of renowned tube map designer Harry Beck, so we take a detailed look at his life, work, and complicated relationship with London Transport. Cronache dei '90
Ep. 13 | Il senso di David Beckham per il calcio

Cronache dei '90

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 6, 2021 69:17

Up the Irons! The latest episode of the podcast which asks: is there such a thing as a trendy wank? This episode, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, drags us back to the dark  Civil War of the mid-90s, when brother fought against brother over whether Roll With It was slightly less rubbish than Country House, and Oasis-loving loving wives imposed a 'nookie strike' upon their Blur-supporting husbands. Yes, it's the aftermath of the Battle of Britpop, and we fly over the rubble, dropping crates of analysis and sniping at assorted wrongness along the way. If you're expecting non-stop Sons and Daughters of Albion adopting Mockney accents and walking about about monkeys, however, you're going to be sorely disappointed, as there are a lot of - gasp! - Americans on it, and even some Irish people. Dale Winton reaches the pinnacle of the journey he started when he was playing records in a biscuit factory. Berri and De'lacy provide an interesting - sort of - compare-and-contrast of Anglo and American House. Michael Jackson lolls about in a CGI Greek temple with Elvis' daughter. The theme tune from Friends pops up. Fucking Boyzone show up for no reason whatsoever. Montell Jordan arses about in a theme park. Echobelly break up from school forever. Michael Bolton, looking like a giant Womble, asks if he can fondle us. Blur show off. Sarah Bee and Simon Price help Al Needham to walk through the minefield of Britpop like Lady Di, breaking off to discuss the early days of Television X, our shameful careers in pornography, watching Friends whilst ripped to the tits on Leytonstone speed, all the awards we've won and what we do with them, and - finally - Simon gets to talk about Romo. And Oh! what swearing! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week in the US, public discussions are taking place into controversial Gain of Function research. Who should decide the limits of studies where scientists make new, deadlier viruses in the laboratory? Dr Filippa Lentzos, biosecurity expert from King's College, London, lists a litany of accidental security breaches from the past. Should we stop this kind of dangerous research, or encourage it, in the interests of national security? Mindfulness is a hot topic at the moment. As part of BBC School Report, students from Connaught School for Girls in Leytonstone have tested themselves to see whether meditation helps with their studies. Tracey Logan discusses the scientific research underpinning this trend with psychologist Claudia Hammond. The Royal Society released a report this week entitled "Parent, Carer, Scientist." The idea is to encourage an environment in research institutions where scientists can have a life as well as a vocation. Professor Ottoline Leyser, Professor of Plant Development and Director of Cambridge University's Sainsbury Laboratory, discusses what needs to change to ensure more female scientists to stay in science. How do snakes move across sand? BBC science reporter Jonathan Webb meets Perrin Schiebel, at the Georgia Institute of Technology. A physicist, she works with a giant sand pit and high-speed cameras, putting snakes through their paces to unpick how they can push their bodies off the sand without sinking into it.

Opinion podcast with David Aaronovitch, Lucy Fisher and Phil Collins. -- Phil Collins: The anonymous man who said, to the attacker at Leytonstone tube station, “you ain't no Muslim, bruv” has been hailed as speaking for moderate people of all faiths and none. Quite right too. Yet the statement is, alas, not quite true. We cannot attribute murder to faith but we cannot pretend faith is entirely irrelevant either. David Aaronovitch: Oh what a great brouhaha that Syria vote was. 'Momentous' said the BBC. A fabulous debate everyone agreed, with MPs congratulated - on either side - for weighing the issues and their consciences with almost exquisite aesthetic precision. Well, balls frankly. The decision was the minimum possible response a country like ours could have made. Anything else would have been an admission that, short of responding to being invaded, Britain had put its military out to grass. Lucy Fisher: It's received wisdom that Jeremy Corbyn is unelectable & Labour will tank at the 2020 polls... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Colin Marshall walks through Stratford, London with John Rogers, author of the blog Lost Byway book This Other London: Adventures in the Overlooked City. They discuss how one should approach one's first London shopping mall, a built phenomenon that has changed dramatically over the decades; his memories of playing soccer with rotten fruit in the older of Stratford's indoor shopping centers; whether knowing the "other" London requires you to first know the standard London; how "ramble books" got him writing about unwritten-about places; the importance of feeling proud of wherever you live; the unshrinking "London Book" industry, whose robustness possibly owes to the difficulty of pinning the city down; comparisons with Los Angeles, where myths and easy definitions go uncontested; when Leytonstone went from part of Essex to part of London, and what that meant; the historical John Rogers, who got burnt at the stake; what constitutes his walking "practice," which has earned him a reputation as "the drinking man's Iain Sinclair"; the richer connection to the environment you feel when walking, and the aid to thinking it provides; how he first began blogging about his walks, and how the activity took on elements of journalism; his curiosity about London places and place names, and how walking facilitates the accretion of related facts into knowledge; his use of pubs as "third places," and his use of samosas as walking fuel; the Orwellian enjoyment of hardship; and his memories of riding the Docklands Light Railway into the sunset when he first came to town.

Getting Better Acquainted

In GBA 52 we get better acquainted with my sister, Jo. She talks about being part of the Leytonstone community, teaching in inner-city schools, doing studies of single sex schooling, changing attitudes to gender within her lifetime, gardening as religion & more! We also find ourselves wondering about the specifics of family events. These questions inspired me to make GBA Special coming out this Friday. In "To the Heart of It" I talk to Jo, last week’s guest Sonia, previous guests Tony, and my Dad, about some big moments in our family history, getting different perspectives and shining a light on the way we interact as a family group. I also explore my own relation with my father’s mortality and debut a new song from The Reactionaries. Jo Plugs: Allotments and great teachers. "If you want to be happy for an hour get drunk, for a year get married, or for life be a gardener."
