James 'Chucky' Stannard joins us to talk about his new role at the Force and where the team is at. Great to have him back in the West.
Today's episode is part of a special mini-series called Ramadan reflections, where I talk to guests about faith, life and Ramadan.I'm honoured to be speaking with Yasmin Stannard, a mother, advocate, and campaigner, who has been raising awareness and funds for brain cancer in memory of her beloved daughter, Amani.Amani was just 22 years old when she passed away from brain cancer three years ago. Since then, Yasmin and her family have dedicated themselves to honouring Amani's legacy—through fundraising, awareness campaigns, and by sharing their journey of love, loss, and faith. In this conversation, we reflect on grief, healing, and the ways in which faith helps navigate unimaginable loss, especially during Ramadan, a time of deep spirituality and remembrance. This is a conversation that I hope it brings comfort and connection to anyone who has experienced grief.Join Yasmin & Amani's community on instagram to learn more:www.instagram.com/fight4amani Support the show

For seven days, I sat in the front row of the multimillion-pound libel trial and, to be honest with you - another favourite phrase of Vardy's, (a phrase which led Coleen Rooney's barrister, David Sherborne QC to retort, "Well, I'd much rather you're honest because you are sitting in a witness box") - in all my many years of covering fashion and celebrities in this paper, this was the purest form of entertainment I have ever seen. In this episode, Kylee and Zoë explore the complicated history that humans have with alcohol and athletics. We dive into the deep past (shoutout to our simian ancestors!) and see why scientists think humans developed a taste for something that seems counterproductive to passing on our genes (looking at you, Smirnoff blue raspberry). We try to parse out why alcohol is so closely tied to endurance sports and take a deep dive into what the research says about this substance (spoiler alert: three shots of whiskey do NOT make you better at running on a treadmill.) In this episode I get to talk to Brian Stannard, author of the book 'Alcatraz Ghost Story', based on the life of Roy Gardner. Roy was an American criminal active during the 1920s. He stole a total of more than $350,000 in cash and securities and several times escaped from custody. He is said to have been the most hunted man in Pacific Coast history, having had a $5,000 reward for his head three times in less than a year. The newspapers in the West referred to him as the "Smiling Bandit", the "Mail Train Bandit", and the "King of the Escape Artists." He was one of the first inmates transfered to Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. For more info on Roy's crazy life. you can pick up Brian's book here..... Alcatraz Ghost Story: Roy Gardner's Amazing Train Robberies, Escapes, and Lifelong Love by Author Brian Stannard. Author Website: www.brianstannard.com
David Stannard, a British engineer living in Melbourne, Australia, bought a vacation home in a little French village called Cardan in Bordeaux. The small house had a small vineyard attached to it. What David was told was a hectare of Merlot actually ended up being Cabernet Franc. Over the intervening 10 years, Paradise Rescued became not only a small wine brand making delicious Cabernet Franc, it also became a journey and a mission to preserve the authentic character of the site and the rural village that surrounds it. Wine Saves Lives! talks with David about that mission, about the glories of Cabernet Franc, and about the challenges of staying true to a company ethos in a place half a world away from home. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit winesaveslives.substack.com/subscribe
On the afternoon of September 3, 1878, twenty-two-year-old Mary Stannard d left her home in Madison, Connecticut, telling her father she was going blackberry picking and would be back before dark. When night came and Mary hadn't returned, her father went out to look for her and eventually found her body by a creek in the woods. The investigation into her murder was truly wild and remains TECHNICALLY unsolved. Thank you to the amazing Dave White of Bring Me The Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBendici, Ray. 2015. I've been an avid reader of Sean's articles for many years. Sean and his team have a very thoughtful way of presenting sometimes not so intuitive or easy investment concepts. Sean together with Todd Wenning have been regularly sharing their experience and knowledge through writing. I highly recommend checking the episode notes for links, and looking up their work and articles. Sean Stannard-Stockton is president and chief investment officer of Ensemble Capital, which he co-founded in 2004. Ensemble manages $1.5 billion on behalf of approximately 240 high net worth families and institutions. Their core equity strategy is a focused portfolio of 20 to 25 competitively advantaged companies. • We talked about Sean's childhood and upbringing, exploring how it influenced him and paved his career path. • We discussed Sean's article on Value, Growth, Intrinsic Investing. • Sean shared insights into the intriguing concept of the equity anxiety premium, explaining how "premium returns come from the successful management of anxiety." • We touched upon the idea of equity duration. Sean elaborated on how stocks can be viewed as bonds, and lessons from the Nifty Fifty stocks of the 1970s. • Sean shared his experiences with COVID-era pandemic investing, reflecting on the unique challenges and insights from his perspective during this time. • Sean shared his thoughts on an interesting theme he's touched upon in his writings: the consistent underpricing of wonderful companies in the market. • We discussed portfolio construction in detail, exploring topics like the number of stocks, sizes, turnover, holding period. • We also talk about remote work, and Sean's firm's experience working remotely. • To conclude, we talked about Sean's personal and professional definitions of success, getting a deeper understanding of what drives and motivates him. • Stay tuned until the end, when we discuss benchmarks and outperformance. On the 50th episode of The Book of the Dead, we bring you the amazing survival story of 9 year old Jeannette Tamayo. When 9 year old Jeannette is abducted on June 6th, 2003, police rally to find her. Armed with witness testimonies from neighbors, Jeannette's mother and brother, and surveillance footage, the police have an exact time line of what happened, but they're missing some pretty crucial evidence, like the identity of Jeannette's abductor. the biggest break in the case the police needed would come from an unlikely source, Jeannette herself.America's shame. I had the privilege of interviewing Yale Bulldogs men's soccer head coach Kylie Stannard! Stannard played Division 1 college soccer at Creighton University, where he was part of teams that made the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight and Final Four. In his coaching career, Stannard has worked at Northern Illinois University and Michigan State University as an assistant, which led to his hiring as the head coach at Yale. Earning the job in 2014, he has returned the program to success, the 2019 season especially standing out as Yale became outright Ivy League champions for the first time since 1996. In our interview, we discuss how his playing career impacts the way he coaches, his recruiting habits and priorities, that 2019 season, the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic brought to his program, his work as a United States soccer scout, and more! I would like to give a huge thanks to Mr. Stannard for joining my podcast and all the information he shared! Please follow for more interviews on Tyler's Takes!

Jennie and Dianne delve into the spiritual beliefs of the Puritans and how those beliefs made them fear death, but also brought comfort in times of grief. We discuss how these beliefs affected their dress, daily living, death rituals and burial. These Ordinary Extraordinary were constantly preached to about death being as much a part of their life as living. As Puritan minister Cotton Matther once wrote, "Let us look upon everything as a sort of Death's Head set before us, with a memento mortis written upon it.”To donate $5 to the Sleepy Hollow Historic Cemetery Fund, please follow this link: https://gofund.me/062c87d8To learn how to become involved with Wreaths Across America, please follow this link: https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/Resources used to research this episode include:Editors, History.Com. Andrew brings some music trivia gold to the table with the revelation that one of Hollywood's biggest composers wrote a TV quiz show theme. Andrew has worked in Production Music for over 20 years, starting off as a music supervisor for Zomba, moving into sales for BMG before joining the production department at Universal. He's produced countless albums in all manner of genres and has worked with seasoned media composers as well as beat makers, electronic producers, and specialist composers. I know Andrew through my work on the Filmic Folk production music albums I did for Universal. Essentially combining traditional folk instrumentation with cinematic strings. As well as producing new music for Universal Andrew Stannard looks after an archive of old recordings on the Bruton and Chappell labels. He has supplied samples to artists like Danger Mouse and Disclosure and through this, had a hand in the worldwide number on hit record ‘Crazy' by Gnarls Barkley I see production music as an unsung hero of the music industry. The composers don't usually get the glory like TV and film composers but there is some incredible production music out there. When bespoke music written to picture isn't an option, many companies will turn to trusty production music libraries like those of Universal.
