For some fresh new content while out in Nashville, Tom welcomes on Zach, or better known as the "Veteran With A Sign". Learning the inspiration, meaning, and drive behind Zach and Veteran With A Sign is something that every veteran ( and civilian) should be aware of, which is why we hope this particular episode makes it to the ears of so many. This episode really brings up some important thoughts surrounding the importance of mental health, coping with struggle & loss, life, happiness, and even getting a different take on the transition from the military to civilian world. "The biggest problem between the veteran-civilian world is, it's not their job to understand us... It's our job to help them understand us. They have no context". "Fear Develops due to lack of understanding". Understanding thoughts like this are critical to a Veteran who may be struggling to transition, or perhaps someone about to leave the military. Now, If 2020 was a hell of a year for you then, this brand new episode is a must to starting off 2021. We thank Veteran With A Sign very much for coming on the Podcast and really look forward to doing another impactful episode one day. Until then, we hope this one can hit home for you all. Remember to check out, share, and most importantly, truly learn more about the mission behind Veteran With A Sign. It makes a difference for us all. While in North Carolina Tom knocks out two episodes wrapping up his trip with Green Beret and Soflete's own @dougtheelephantslayer. As many know Doug in the community, not much is needed to say about this episode; however, as always, we know you will enjoy the topics discussed and hope some different angles on mental heath are noteworthy for all! Now on the other hand, if your unfamiliar with Soflete and what the company has to offer, we encourage you to download the Soflete app, or go check them out and support! While staying healthy, fit, educated & involved may be "ideal" for many, we think it's absolutely critical for veterans, and can truly help them live fulfilling & rewarding lives. Soflete truly incorporates the best of the best in these ideals which clearly shows in the growing following and community that exists as a result, so again, from all of us at TKC, please, check them out, and enjoy! In this episode, Tango Alpha travels back to the homeland, good ol' North Carolina, to link up with the founder of The Guerrilla Group, Green Beret, the man himself, Ryan @wolf.ex.machina for a much needed and long awaited episode. As the boys put back a little ripple, this episode gets lively with what we at the TKC would consider, some of, if not, our best recorded conversations about just simply dealing with life, the mental heath stigma in both the civilian & military world, relationships, marriage, kids, and dare I say it, yessir, some god damn bromance. We all like the smell of spent rounds, JP-8, our own feet, anddddd Yankee Candle, it's ok. For this Memorial Day Episode, while easing out of covid restrictions, Tom trucks out to the Tru Patriot Headquarters in Sabetha, Kansas to sit down with former Green Beret and Founder of Tru Patriot, Larry Asher, & his son Dale. Talking about the company and how they really set themselves apart from other apparel and military related businesses, to our partnered pledge, support, and awareness of Gold Star families, and of course some discussion on what this Memorial Day weekend means to us all. Also talking about organizations such as the The Captain Joseph House, The Green Beret Foundation, and many more, we also hope you all take a look into what these great foundations and what they not only have done, but continue to do for veterans and the Green Beret community. Here at TKC, we are honored to be partnered with TruPatriot and we hope after this episode it is easy to see why. Thank you again to Larry and Dale for coming on the show, but a bigger thank you to Larry for getting all of this together, his team at TruPatriot, BlackBird Anthem, and of course, Gold Star mother, Betsy Shultz & the Captain Joseph House Foundation in honor of fallen Green Beret Captain Joseph Shultz, for this collaborative effort. On this solemn weekend, we ask you to remember not only those who are no longer with us and gave the ultimate sacrifice, but the brave and courageous families that live on to tell their stories. For episode two of our Memorial Day weekend thanks to TruPatiot, Tom is honored to speak with Betsy Shultz, Mother of fallen Green Beret Captain Joseph Shultz, and founder of the Captain Joseph House Foundation. As from the Freedom Blog, Joseph served two tours in Iraq, first with the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), 82nd Airborne Division, and later as the G-2 advisor, 10th Iraqi Army Division. After receiving his Green Beret, Joe was assigned to Co. C, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) where he served as Detachment Commander of Special Forces Operational Detachment – Alpha 3333. On May 29, 2011, Joseph was killed in action in the Wardak Province, Afghanistan. We sincerely appreciate and thank Betsy Shultz from the bottom of our hearts here at TKC for not just coming on the show, but for her continuing action, love, and enthusiasm in support of her son and vets alike. Honoring not only her son, but Betsy herself personally, she remains un surpassed despite technical effort, and is without a doubt a staple point for the foundation. Having his mother Betsy on the show to discuss Joseph and the foundation was also a real pleasure and honor, and should we be afforded the opportunity to speak with Betsy again about whatever it is she wants to talk about . Offering not one, but THREE podcast for you all this Memorial Day Weekend ( Fri, Sat, & Sun morning releases), Tom begins by talking to Adam Martin, Combat Vet, Business Professor at South Florida State College, and Lead Singer & Founder of Blackbird Anthem. As Memorial Day approaches, we start not only honoring the fallen, but begin our weekend by first, remembering those we continue to loose everyday right here at home. With that, Tom, Adam, and Blackbird Anthem have you covered. With a little background story on Adam and his drive for starting Blackbird Anthem, an independent southern rock band from central Florida, we spotlight and focus on their recent original song "22", which of course, represents the 22 veterans a day die that we loose from suicide. Thanks to Adam for coming on the show, sharing his passion, motivation, missions, and goals with us, as we here at TKC not only align with those goals, but cannot wait to hear more from Adam and BlackBird Anthem alike. From just downright & straight forward motivation, to success and failure within civilian life and in business, to various ways of helping veterans and contributing to the this unreal and supportive veteran community that exists. To start off the weekend, Tom welcomes on: Coach Bunny, or Benjamin Bunn (of Bravo Sierra), Former Green Beret, Entrepreneur & Cross-fit gym owner. This episode is just an overall great talk with a motivating and down to earth guy, that really dives into the topic of business and entrepreneurship for both veteran and civilians alike. From the hard realities of running a business, to starting a podcast, to what it ultimately takes to be successful in both: hard work. Benjamin shows that there is no secret recipe to success. It simply comes down to hard work and putting in the effort. Lots of it. Once again, we thank Benjamin very much for his time and coming on the show to talk as it was greatly appreciated. Jon Macaskill, retiring Navy Seal Commander, mindfulness teacher, and now key member of the Veterans Path, joins Tom this week for what we would call yet again, another must listen to episode! While still remotely recording during the covid situation, Tom and Jon have an amazing conversation about this unique organization, Veterans Path, and what it has to offer. For many and most veterans, getting the help or support they want or need is often a daunting, complicated, and stigmatized task. In this episode, it's clear to see that while that may be true, it's both proactive and motivating to learn about other types of support and relief out there. Veterans Path truly has a different approach, and as they say "offering not only a community of support, but mindfulness, wellness, and meditation tools" in which we at TKC should be looked into by all. Jon also talks about the Podcast he hosts for the organization in which also has interesting and big news to look forward to. We encourage you all to check him out, support, and have a listen! From mind altering headphones and other cool gadgets, to wake-up practices and alarm hardware, to of course breathing & meditation techniques, both Tom and Jon took some new information away from this episode as we surely know you will as well! And finally, thank you to Jon. We can't begin to say how much we appreciated having him on and look forward to future podcast together again soon! On this episode Tom welcomes on Josh Duntz, Navy EOD & Special Operations Veteran, and Founder of Stasis Performance. Linking up remotely via teleconference, this episode really touches base on some important topics that, quite frankly, need to be discussed more frequently and seriously in this day and age. This episode begins with Josh and his background, the importance of exposure training and breathing practices, to some good ol' Army and military reminiscence. Getting deeper into conversation, Tom and Josh discuss the extreme importance and awareness of mental health stigma, cannabis activism, the view in which both military and civilian lifestyles view and accept these, and of course the societal problems and stigmas that exist as a result. We hope you all find this episode interesting as we not only thoroughly enjoyed talking to Josh, but can't wait to have him on again. To keep us all busy during the quarantine, Tom gets 13 Bar Performance founder, Shelton Stevens, back on for yet another entertaining and much needed conversation. The episode begins by keeping positive and discussing the benefits of the quarantine such as: taking a second to slow down per se and think about what really matters in your life. For many, this is perhaps the first time (in a long time) that we have been able to spend quality, indispensable, time with our family, significant others, pets, or even just ourselves. Time to decompress, reflect, and get healthy, while staying true to yourself. With 13 Bar currently presenting some great programs and accommodating opportunities to workout during this situation, we encourage you all to have a look. Keeping that in that mind, the Internet is also quite notorious for having a massive flood of false or misleading information. "Youtube University" and the social media nation alike must be taken with a grain of salt as Tom and Shelton touch on this and why it should be important to YOU. Do your due diligence when researching such plans, and ask questions! Ending the episode off with an epic, yet comical, story to include Jeff Nichols, you are sure to stay tuned until the very end. Jeremiah is a retired Green Beret, serving within two different groups during his twenty years of service, an endurance athlete, crossfit coach and marijuana advocate. We were connected through a SOF meme site, which in itself is pretty ironic considering we spend this whole episode on a raw run of meme-ing everyone. Jeremiah is currently raising money for a race called The Grand Traverse in which all proceeds are going to the Green Beret Foundation. I don’t really have a ton to say about this episode except go listen. It’s that good, it’s raw, funny, and most of all it’s important that we hear this stories because of how unique these guys are.Jeremiah “Blackbeard” Wilberhttps://www.instagram.com/jeremiah_blackbeard/https://fundraise.greenberetfoundation.org/campaign/grand-traverse-fundraiser-benefiting-green-beret-foundation/c252548Join Our Patreon- https://www.pateron.com/thekensingtoncornerThomas Angel-Host.https://www.instagram.com/thomas_angel21Jeffrey Thompson-Hosthttps://www.facebook.com/jeffrey.thompsonCorey Williams-Associate Producer/Sound Engineerhttps://www.instagram.com/coreyjohn_williamsJosh Elliot-Media Production Specialisthttps://www.instagram.com/curdnerd2/Sam Swidensky- Chief Technology Officerhttps://www.instagram.com/samswidensky/Support the show (https://www.Patreon.com/thekensingtoncorner )
The Green Beret Foundation has been a key element in why we do what we do here at The Kensington Corner. Foundations who truly help those in need, this time though the foundation hits pretty close to home. I have wanted to be a green beret for years, obsessed over it. I listened to stories, watched movies, read books and talked to almost any special forces team member I could. When we started looking at the angle the podcast was going, it was a no brainer to get GBF on for an episode.Insert Brent Cooper, the executive director of the Green Beret Foundation and someone I now consider a friend. After a few years of feeling themselves out and going through some internal issues they brought Brent on last year. The turn around has been amazing, GBF has partnered with a ton of companies and one of my personal favorites GoRuck for a lot of good just not in the special operations community but for veterans over all. Over all though, they have one important task at hand The Green Beret Foundation serves the Army’s Special Forces, our nation’s most elite soldiers. We believe Green Berets are our nation’s greatest assets. Every day, we honor our commitment to Green Berets past and present, as well as their families, by connecting them with the right resources to prosper and thrive. Because when these soldiers meet powerful opportunities, our nation’s most elite soldiers become our nation’s best leaders. We truly hope you enjoy today’s conversation, it’s a conversation that hits close to him and reminds all of us that there’s still war going on, still people to take care of, and we still have Green Berets and their families who need our love and support. Jeff Nichols is a former Navy Seal, founder of Performance First, an exercise physiologist who has been in this field for over 20 years. Overall he’s just a pretty badass individual. He specializes in helping the fitness journeys of countless armed forces, law enforcement and firemen crews across the world. I was led to Jeff this past year while deciding it was time for me to come out of my military retirement and attend SFAS for the Army. Jeff’s program are well renown within the SOF community and I decided to give one a try. (his hypertrophy program is an absolute beast.)This led me to wanting to bring Jeff on the podcast, I honestly wasn’t even sure he’d be down to come on but I cannot express how cool of an individual this guy truly is. We had an amazing conversation, not just about fitness but overall life. His mantra, his way of life, presence of being with leave you almost awestruck. My co-host Jeff and I come from a science back ground and listening to Jeff Nichols speak on the mind/body dualistic approach and his overall mastery of bio-mechanics will blow you away. I truly hope everyone enjoys this episode and pulls something from it. We had an amazing time having Jeff on and really hope he comes back on again in the future. When I first got out of the military I wasn’t sure quite where to go or what to do, I had a plan and I executed it but it wasn’t like it was easy. Waking up one day and the last decade of your life doesn’t really matter anymore. The combat is gone, leading soldiers has vanished, I slept past 5 AM with no feeling of anxiety. I smoked a little weed. I still had an overall feeling of what the hell am I doing? “I'm free, I’m a human again” I exclaimed! Why did I still feel trapped? Why did I feel depressed, isolated, nervous of the future and the present and well the past. I would later on see a therapist, two years too late actually. This started my journey on helping veterans get help, but how do I do that? I started a podcast to reach thousands of people, I made attempts to check on friends from service. I started to connect with projects like Headstrong, Green Beret Foundation, Veterans Community Project, etc. This, I felt was my calling. To get the word out.We sat down with Matt McCoy from the Headstrong Project/Get Headstrong to talk about veteran mental health, the process that they take to help veterans and Matt’s own personal journey with mental health. Hope you enjoy! Cheers!Support the show (https://www.Patreon.com/thekensingtoncorner )
Jason Kander is a lawyer, politician, New York Times best selling author and an Operation Enduring Freedom Veteran but now as he sits and tries to help his new passion expand into new territory he’s finally at peace and in the right position. He served as the Secretary of State of Missouri and while running for office as mayor of Kansas City received helped for PTSD and Depression. It was at this time his entire life changed. He became an advocate for mental health and stepped away from the spotlight. While away he linked up with an organization rightly titled Veterans Community Project. Veterans Community Project is dedicated to supporting every man and woman who took the oath for our country. We are determined to make a difference in the lives of homeless Veterans, a task accomplished by the community for the community per their website. I’ve had the honor of meeting several of the founders and their great guys. On this episode we sit down with Jason and talk about his new role with expanding into new territory with VCP and how his past has shaped and formed his thought process now while highlighting exactly what he went through with PTSD and Depression. It’s a lighthearted conversation but on a very serious topic that I believe all three of us speaking on this episode believe passionately in.Hope you enjoy it! Suicide Prevention…it’s something we all know, something still seemingly not worth discussing yet we all post about it once a year for a month and then never heard about it again for another 11 months. We sat down with Dr. Stephanie Davis to discuss her role at the Eastern Kansas VA as Director of Suicide Awareness and Prevention. This is not just a military or veteran issue even though rates of suicide are significantly higher, especially in the male population. Why though? What is so terrifying about the struggle of life? Life is about suffering but in ways that make it worth while. How do we help? How can we help? Is there an actual way to prevent these tragedies?I’ve had 4 deployments myself, I struggled when I came back. I personally hurt, especially when I got out of the military. I had nothing to fill that void, to make it better, to complete my life. I was lost. I also considered suicide, in my thoughts I said well, death would be better than the struggle of living an unhappy life. I had everything, money, a very beautiful girlfriend, on track to be a doctor and hopefully going back into become a Green Beret but I was not happy. I needed help, I needed treatment.I live my life now to help those who struggle, who need that help. We genuinely hope this episode helps you and you reach out…to anyone, to Dr. Davis, myself, Jeffrey, anyone.Support the show (https://www.Patreon.com/thekensingtoncorner )
Mike Loewe is a Veteran living here in Lawrence, Kansas that just so happens to know more about bourbon than anyone else I’ve ever met in my life. When we were first pitching ideas for the podcast, men’s health, vintage styling and grooming and bourbon were the first three ideas pitched. You could say this episode was a match made in heaven for us. A friendly veteran, meets other veterans, brings free whiskey and bourbon and we chat. Life does not get better than this. This strayed a little different than our normal chat but it truly is a general conversation among friends. I would say I learned more this episode than a lot of the previous others just because I was incredibly ignorant on bourbon. I love an old fashioned but the process, the different kinds, the multitude of distilleries I had never heard of…Mike knew.I truly hope everyone enjoys this episode, we had fun, we let loose and we did a fun episode. Douglas Spradlin is a mechanic…not your typical one though. Douglas is a master groomsmen who owns Standard Grooming and Supply, but not in just a “hey this dude cuts hair and trims beards really well” kind of way, but in a way that makes you leave his studio feeling confident, refreshed and anew. He takes his craft incredibly serious and with all the barbers I’ve been to in my name, he tops them all, even though he’ll tell you he isn’t technically a barber. In this episode we discuss a ton of different things, from male grooming, politics, the state of food in America and a ton of other human factors in today’s landscape. Sensory deprivation is something I’ve always been quite interested in. I, myself, am a fan boy of holistic medicine, self care and anything that involves creating a better world for optimal health in human beings. Stephen, our guest today is the owner of Go With The Float in Easthampton, MA. We share ideas on what we think our lives really mean, what we’re meant to do as humans and how overall we can better ourselves as a human race. I think the conversations we’re having on this subject are important and I truly do not believe enough people across the land are having these discussions. We’re merely apes, who have evolved to speak and do things, we’re still very primal. We still have very primal feelings, stubbornness and ignorance are among those feelings and traits. My quest in life has been to shed these innate traits no matter how difficult, to reach a level of comfort and consciousness that will result in a life time of happiness. I am obviously still on this journey and who knows, may be my entire life.Meeting people like Stephen gives me hope, he has a vision, a radical opinion and a heart full of love. I enjoyed this conversation and I truly hope you do as well. Cheers!Support the show (https://www.Patreon.com/thekensingtoncorner )
When I first got out of the military, I was bitter. I had spent half of my twenties overseas in wars I cared nothing about, past my first deployment. I wasn’t unpatriotic, I just understood the real reasons we were there and saw the differences, both good and bad, that we we’re making. !5 months have passed since my exit and I’m finally happy again. I finally feel proud of my service. I got out my old challenge coins, am framing my dress blues and have even added some military stuff around my loft. When I met HC Palmer I would say he felt similar to me, proud of his service but distrusting of some of the things we were asked to do or witness. HC introduced me to John Musgrave and David Hann, all three Vietnam vets with something to say. Jeff being prior service as well, we figured we’d get everyone together on the podcast and discuss a few things. We fell on the topic of Memorial Day and what it truly means. We discuss how far we’ve distanced ourselves from what we should be “celebrating”. We should be mourning, we should be commemorating the loss of the brave souls who died for us to continue to be the greatest nation on this planet. Even with all our political turmoil, we are free. If you’re not a veteran, this episode is definitely for you. It will bring you inside our minds and thoughts and will hopefully allow you to get a realization on what this “holiday” means for us. We need to bring back the real Memorial Day, not this bbq and lake bullshit. There’s more we talk about in this episode obviously, and I hope you enjoy it. Happy Independence Day everyone!Support the show (https://www.Patreon.com/thekensingtoncorner )
The medieval forerunner of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter. It was concerned particularly with attempts to convert base metals into gold or to find a universal elixir. This is the definition of Alchemy, and I believe that in the town of Lawrence, KS, at the wonderful coffee shop and bake house Alchemy that they have found that universal elixir. We’ve been all around the world and have had coffee in different countries, continents, from small town Kansas to Rome, yet none capture our heart nearly as much as Alchemy. Owner and operator Ben Farmer or as he’ll be known this episode, The Alchemist, is a vibrant, upbeat, no holds bar kind of guy. We’ve known each other for a while now and have always managed to have great conversations, we’re similar in stature and have tattoos that look closely related as well. So, naturally there was some cosmic draw for us to make this episode happen right? Ben turned a small coffee shop at the end of Massachusetts street into a brand new, sprawling bake house right in the heart of Mass. The aesthetics alone are enough to make you come back, the beautiful wood floors, huge wooden bar, Machu Picchu huge and ever present on the wall towering over you as a peaceful reminder that all is well. Ben runs the shop with his beautiful and elegant wife Joni who’s Instagram prowess is second to none (the baked goods aren’t bad either!) It would be a tragedy not to mention her as she’s just as important if not more important than anyone to how well this bake house runs. There’s no question why they’ve won Best in Lawrence four years in a row and Ben is one of the best baristas in town….definitely the number one Alchemist in town. So grab a cup of coffee, or come down to Alchemy and get a cappuccino and Mind Haze IPA (my favorite combo), relax and enjoy this adventure.
