Christy Foley is a dynamic connector, life explorer, and philanthropist. She's also Vice-Chair of the Hoffman Board of Directors. Christy attended the Process two decades ago, just two weeks after her father graduated. The Hoffman Process was the first step in Christy's spiritual journey. To this day, Hoffman remains one of the three most profound experiences that completely transformed her life. She shares that a transformation happens at the Process that "you can't go back from." In doing the work of the Process, we leave our week there with an awareness we didn't have before. This profound awareness allows us to see situations or patterns more clearly and respond wisely with a more conscious choice. If we get caught in the pattern, we can forgive ourselves, choose again, and move on. After the Process, Christy embarked on a spiritual journey that has taken her to many places, but most importantly deeper into her inner world. She tears up as she talks about living in the presence of the unknown. It's living from her heart. In her words, it is "where the magic happens." In this generous conversation, Christy speaks of the trap of our attempts at perfection. As she says, to be human is to be imperfect. There's a great relief in that. We hope you enjoy this conversation with Christy and Drew. More about Christy Foley: Christy is a dynamic connector, life explorer, and philanthropist. She participates in the global community as an accelerator of ideas and vision and is passionate about our interconnectedness to all life on this planet. With her consulting and philanthropic efforts, Christy supports projects that foster spiritual development, social justice, and community building. She serves as Vice-Chair of the board of The Hoffman Institute and is a board member of Las Cumbres Ranch Educational Fund. Previous board services include A Sense of Home and Veterans Path. Christy is also a member of Forward Global. Christy is a marketing, communications, and business development veteran having spent her career immersed in the technology, media, natural food products, and nonprofit industries. Our recent guest took us on a wild journey. From interviewing in his car in a National Park, to getting kicked out of said park because it was closing down, discussing his RV life and buying a new home, and discussing how he has seen lives changed and lives saved from the organization he works for. Veterans PATH holds retreats that are for Veterans and taught by Veterans. Our show uncovers one pillar within Veterans PATH and we learn how lives are changed and lives are saved. Jon Macaskill’s journey is relatable because of the dark spiral he, himself, was on. Then he found mindfulness meditation. Did he rethink his psychiatrist when he recommended mindfulness versus medication? You bet he did. Did he listen and continue to try what his psychiatrist recommended? He sure did. That is how he was led down the Veterans PATH. Today, my guest is Army Veteran Hugo Gonzalez (picture credit Andrea Bruce Woodall - Washington Post). Hugo was severely injured in combat in Baqubah, Iraq on June 21, 2004. He was on patrol in a Hummer bucket truck when his unit was ambushed. The vehicle took a direct hit from an improvised explosive device (IED) and a furious gun battle broke out with insurgents. The blast wave caused Hugo to suffer a traumatic brain injury, after fragments ripped into his head. He was evacuated to the base camp where he was placed in a medically-induced coma, and underwent a craniotomy to remove a piece of bone from his cranium to relieve the pressure of the swelling of his brain. He suffered internal bleeding, a sinus bone fracture, a crushed optic nerve in his right eye and a hole in the left retina. He is legally blind. In 2005, he underwent a cranioplasty to repair his skull defect. The procedure went well, but he suffered multiple seizures requiring long term therapy with anti-epileptic medications. Today I’m honored to have as my guest, Jesi Stracham (“Strawham”), a wheelchair athlete on a mission to inspire the world to live life to its fullest by sharing my story. Jesi is currently training to compete in the 2022 Winter Paralympics in Wheelchair Curling. In January 2015, Jesi was the passenger on a motorcycle when it collided with a car. She woke up a week later in an intensive care unit without the use of her legs secondary to a spinal cord injury. Instead of accepting disability as her reality, she rejected the prognosis that she would be wheelchair dependent for the rest of her life. In the face of adversity, she is recovering from her disability and using it as a platform to reach the world. In the five years since her injury, she has been able to achieve more than she previously dreamed possible. To name just a few accomplishments, she has qualified for the US Paralympic Curling Developmental Team and founded a non-profit called Wheel With Me Foundation that aims to serve persons with spinal cord injuries. Over the past several years, Jesi has generated a significant following among both the spinal cord injury and able-bodied community. She says her goal is simple: show the world there is opportunity in their obstacles. She helps people achieve their dreams through the importance of goal setting. While still remotely recording during the covid situation, Tom and Jon have an amazing conversation about this unique organization, Veterans Path, and what it has to offer. For many and most veterans, getting the help or support they want or need is often a daunting, complicated, and stigmatized task. In this episode, it's clear to see that while that may be true, it's both proactive and motivating to learn about other types of support and relief out there. Veterans Path truly has a different approach, and as they say "offering not only a community of support, but mindfulness, wellness, and meditation tools" in which we at TKC should be looked into by all. Jon also talks about the Podcast he hosts for the organization in which also has interesting and big news to look forward to. We encourage you all to check him out, support, and have a listen! From mind altering headphones and other cool gadgets, to wake-up practices and alarm hardware, to of course breathing & meditation techniques, both Tom and Jon took some new information away from this episode as we surely know you will as well! And finally, thank you to Jon. We can't begin to say how much we appreciated having him on and look forward to future podcast together again soon! Mindfulness and meditation can be enormously powerful when engaged in financial markets. These practices have the ability to weaponize the mind for optimal performance whilst creating a robust and resilient suit of armour against the doubts and uncertainties induced by volatile and uncertain financial markets. In this conversation, the show hosts Steve Goldstein and Mark Randall explore these activities, digging deep into how and why they can be so powerful with US Navy Seal Commander, Jon Macaskill.Jon is a serving US Navy officer who practices and teaches mindfulness and meditation. He is currently transitioning out of the US Navy and whilst doing so, is working on a project called Veterans PATH, which seeks to teach these powerful techniques to US Navy Veterans to equip and empower them in their future lives. Jon has worked in the most stressful, complex and anxiety inducing environments one can imagine. These include multiple tours of Iraq and Afghanistan leading military teams and coordinating with various other teams and units all whilst potentially being responsible for the lives of others and the success of operations. Jon came to mindfulness and meditation as a way of dealing with the stress, anxiety and depression which resulted from his high wire military life. After some initial doubts and reservations, it proved profound in transforming his life, and improving his performance. Many people in the financial markets now practice these techniques including some of the world’s leading traders and investors. However, many still feel uncomfortable with the concept, which seems out of odds with the testosterone fuelled world of trading and investment. Hearing Jon’s story and reflections will give many ‘pause for thought’ and may influence them in ways which could have a profound impact on how they work and manage themselves in their risk-taking activities.
