EVENT: If you'd like to attend a Q&A session with Combat Story's Ryan Fugit, please fill out this form. Today we hear the Combat Story of Kevin Flike, a former Green Beret and Purple Heart recipient who served multiple deployments, including two to Afghanistan. Kevin was shot in the abdomen during his second deployment and took years recovering from the associated physical and emotional scars and has shown that it is possible to not only fully recover from such an injury, but to thrive. He is a graduate of the MIT Sloan School of Management and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, sits on the Board of Directors at the Green Beret Foundation, is a sought out motivational speaker, and shares his story of perseverance through a blog and outreach series called Wounded by War, which includes a documentary on his recovery. Kevin was recommended to me by Beau Wise, a former guest on the show who lost two of his brothers to the war in Afghanistan, one of whom knew Kevin. Kevin and Beau have become like brothers. I hope you enjoy this inspiring insight from the brink of death to tremendous success as much as I did. Our guest today is former Special Forces Green Beret Kevin Flike. Kevin first came to TB12 in 2017 and has completed over 160 sessions with us to date. Kevin's story is one of overcoming the odds at every turn, and we're proud to have him in our TB12 family.  Kevin was born and raised in Stillwater, a small town in upstate New York. After graduating from Union College (BA), he served as a Special Forces Engineer assigned to the 1st Special Forces Group and deployed to the Philippines, Thailand and twice to Afghanistan.  On September 25, 2011, Kevin was on patrol with his team in the mountains of northwestern Afghanistan when a firefight broke out. After 10 hours of intense fighting, a Taliban sniper shot Flike in the stomach as he walked around the corner of a building – changing his life forever. As you'll hear, Kevin's problems started with the physical: a fractured hip, loss of 20% of his colon, and a damaged femoral nerve. He would endure six surgeries marked by 40 inches of scars. As he worked towards a physical recovery, growing psychological and spiritual problems complicated his progress: depression, despair, addiction, anger, jealousy, and post-traumatic stress.  After a life-altering conversation with his wife, Kevin began to ascend from the dark place he had been in – beginning with attending graduate school. In the Spring of 2016, Kevin completed dual masters degrees from MIT and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.  We sat down with Kevin to hear about his early life, how his upbringing led him to the Green Berets, and how his experiences have forced him to adapt and take back control of his life.

Medically Retired Green Beret Kevin Flike joins Jason and Rich for Episode 033. Kevin tells the story of his life of service up to and after his second tour as a combat engineer in Afghanistan in September 2011 when during a 10+ hour firefight he was shot in the stomach. He suffered a fractured hip, damage to his femoral nerve and was paralyzed on his left side. He medically retired and he, along with his wife Kimberlee, have fought ever since to recover and build a life worthy of his teammates. “Ask for help. Receive help. Give Help.” Kevin shares how his work ethic, drive and ideals of service and sacrifice were founded at an early age working for his father and playing football. He explains how these convictions led to his decision to join the Army at a time of war and earn his Green Beret. Since retiring from the Army, as part of his recovery, he’s earned degrees from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and the MIT Sloan School of Management. He talks about the hard transitions -- between deployments and through recovery and grad school. He describes his search for ways to live a life of service to others even when struggling in the darkest of places. Once a recipient of their help, one of the ways he currently gives back is on the Board of Directors of the Green Beret Foundation. Be sure to stay tuned for some surprised special guests who pop into the conversation -- proof that the journey has been worth it and also continues. “A life that’s easy, in my opinion, is not a life worth living.” Links: Kevin Flike on Instagram “Wounded by War” Documentary Learn more about GORUCK Glorious Professionals podcast website

He also fractured his hip & his left leg was paralyzed due to nerve damage.   Having overcome his life’s adversities with the relentless help of his wife, Kim,  Kevin’s life purpose is to encourage other wounded veterans and anyone else who needs physical, mental, or emotional help by showing them what hope and perseverance look like. In this episode you will hear:   There’s nothing in life that you can’t have if you’re willing to work hard for it. A lot of these things I went through I didn’t really understand at the time, but they were training me for the rest of my life. There is nothing in life that I need to be doing other than this right now. We’ve got to put differences aside. We gotta charge forward. We’ve got a mission to accomplish. I didn’t want to have regret in my life. I didn’t want to look back and say I didn’t try. I realized if I didn’t start to put my health as a priority again, I was gonna be nothing to nobody. Reach out to people for help. Start taking people’s advice. There is a point in your life where you have enough courage to put everything on the line and accomplish something. A lot of people don’t believe it when I tell them that getting shot was the best thing that ever happened in my life. It forced me to pass through a valley of humility. Depression, anxiety, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress – if I hadn’t gone through that I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Because I went through those experiences, I have the ability to empathize with people. I understand a lot more about the trouble people have in their lives. This made me a better husband, father, citizen, and employee of this country. It gave me an incredible perspective on life, and a ton of lessons learned to be able to go out and share with people; to make them into the best version of themselves. I would really encourage people to never quit. When you’re going thru these hard times, you have to understand that hard times are not a bad thing. They’re a gift - to scrape off the rough edges, to learn a lot of lessons, to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, to refine your character. Lift your head up, see what’s happening, then you can push through that hard time. And when you get to the other side, you’re gonna be thankful you went through that.

Kevin Flike knows what is means to be down and out. As a Green Beret, Kevin was shot in the lower abdomen during his second deployment to Afghanistan in September of 2011. On the show, he talks with Jim and Jan about his journey to heal himself, and then… inspire others. He went from multiple hours of physical therapy a day to attaining dual master’s degrees from MIT and Harvard.   Key Takeaways [1:47] Kevin shares his story of being shot while deployed in Afghanistan, and the severe damage it did to his body. What sounds like a terrible thing ended up being a gift to Kevin and opened up the possibility for him to deeply inspire others through their physical and mental challenges. [2:22] A few of the awards Kevin has received include the Bronze Star Medal (two awards), Purple Heart, and Army Commendation Medal w/ Valor. [3:10] Kevin is an avid yogi, and meditates daily. It serves as a great way to help his control the physical and mental pain that come with his severe injury. [5:39] We have new versions of ourselves many times in life. Great leaders rise to the occasion when they are faced with new challenges. [7:53] Have set milestones along the way of achieving your goals. Celebrate the minor successes, and don’t be afraid to pivot. [9:39] Attending MIT helped sharpen Kevin’s analytical skills, and Harvard showed him there are many ways to serve. Attending class consistently was humbling and helped lighten a lot of the bitterness Kevin had from his previous injuries. [15:50] We may have to set aside our pride on the way to achieving our goals. [18:36] Great leaders push their boundaries and put themselves in situations where they can develop courage through expanding their comfort zone. [24:45] The military is more of a melting pot than public perception may lend to it. While some think of it as mostly giving and taking of orders, there are many times where one must think quickly and out of the box. [26:59] Know your team. You have to understand where they are coming from and establish a personal connection for a loyal and connected relationship. [28:00] Kevin and his wife appreciated the help the Green Beret Foundation gave them so much that they wanted to give back. Now Kevin helps share their mission and raise awareness about what they do to help men and women get back on their feet.
