Send us a textWelcome back to your favorite corner of chaos—the Ones Ready podcast. Today we're giving you the inside scoop on the next Operator Training Summit in La Jolla, California (that's right, where influencers pretend to jog and Navy SEALs learn to leave Combat Controller's on the OBJ). If you've ever wanted mentorship, expert instruction, and a slight brush with aquatic panic, this is your episode. We're breaking down everything you need to know: deep-ass pools, buddy breathing without drowning your buddy, and how Drownproofing in the same pool as Deep End Fitness is more of a spiritual journey than a drill. Oh, and don't worry—this is NOT a smoke session. It's deliberate. It's intentional. And you'll leave with more than just sore calves and PTSD from mask and snorkel drills. Also featuring:

We did a contracting episode a few weeks ago where we aired out a few grievances mostly focused on how strength and conditioning coaches in contracted roles with the military are treated. In that conversation we acknowledged that we have limited experience with contracting, and we were open to having an expert come on and set the record straight.  As it happens, this week's guest is exactly the kind of expert we were looking for. Chris Larkin is LMR Technical Group CEO and Cofounder and his background covers enlisted and officer service in Air Force Special Warfare and extensive involvement in military human performance in multiple different roles. Chris spent 28 years total in the Air Force as an enlisted Combat Controller and Special Tactics Officer, starting to advocate for military human performance initiatives even before commissioning. He served as the first Squadron Commander at the Special Tactics Training Squadron and helped establish the Combat Athlete Program (which pre-dated SOCOM POTFF) working with AF Research Lab and USAFA Human Performance Lab. He had HPO specific facilities built at the STTS and 23 Special Tactics Squadron – some of the first built in the DoD and even ran one of the first ever Human Performance Symposiums (bringing in industry, academia, and other military units to help solve HPO problems). He wrote his thesis at the Joint Advanced Warfighting School (JAWS) on “Combat Fitness a Concept Vital to National Defense” and was an Operational Squadron commander when POTFF came to AFSOC and even deployed HPO staff into Afghanistan to expedite the recovery process. His credentials include a bachelors in Exercise Science, Master Fitness Trainer, ACSM Exercise Leader, and USA Triathlon Coach. He's also an accomplished athlete in his own right. He ran Division 1 Cross Country and Southwest Texas State University. He has represented the Air Force in downhill skiing, triathlon, pentathlon, and Ironman - including 3 Ironman finishes. And he has 3,000 parachute jumps – including numerous demonstrations at events including NFL, MLB, NASCAR.

Former Combat Controller and author Dan Schilling shares stories of the bravery and dedication of America's Special Operations forces, highlighting the relatively unknown community of Airforce Combat Controllers. These individuals are among the most versatile in Special Ops and have a unique dual role as both lethal individuals on the battlefield and humanitarian responders in times of crisis. We discussed the story of Medal of Honor recipient John Chapman a Combat Controller who inserted with a small element of SEALs from DEVGRU into an enemy camp to retrieve SEAL Neil Roberts. Through a series of difficult circumstances, Chapman ended up alone on a mountaintop in Afghanistan, fighting for 40-plus minutes against two dozen enemy fighters. In this action, Chapman saved the lives of 23 Americans, and the entire battle was recorded by a CIA drone hovering above. The entire video is on youtube, narrated by Dan Schilling, and every American should watch it.  Through Schilling's firsthand accounts and insight, listeners gain a greater appreciation for the sacrifices and dedication of these essential members of America's military community. Americans are obligated to provide all the assistance we can to our combat #veterans and their families. All who serve in our military deserve our gratitude and appreciation. We owe an especial debt to the members of our Special Operations teams, who go above and beyond the normal risks associated with war. Those individuals with the drive and commitment who volunteer for the hardships and augmented risks of Special Operations are what differentiates the American military. Their enhanced training and intense qualification process result in highly trained, driven and team-focused warriors. I am beyond honored and privileged to be a Board member of the Combat Control Foundation, which is the fund-raising vehicle that supports the ongoing mission of the Combat Control Association, dedicated to helping those veterans and their families, whatever the need may be. The Board contains a mix of civilian volunteers and #CCT veterans like Mike West, who took time out of his schedule to visit the Messy Times studios. Join us for a discussion about the value of service to our nation, and the myriad ways in which all Americans can help foundations like ours to execute our mission, which is to serve those who have sacrificed so much for us all in their military service. Combat Control Foundation founding members Mike Lamonica and Mike West join us to discuss some of our military's most highly trained warriors. The motto of Combat Controllers is “First There” and is derived from World War II when Pathfinders were inserted in advance of other troops in order to provide weather information and visual guidance for inbound aircraft. Today's Combat Control personnel are trained in air traffic control, Joint Terminal Attack Control, parachuting, explosives and combat diving. Their qualification course has one of the highest attrition rates in the military. Not only is the physical training tough but the technical training for things like air traffic control also causes washouts. The first woman to complete the arduous training graduated in April.  Five of the eleven Air Force Cross (2nd only to the Medal of Honor) medals awarded during the Global War on Terror went to Combat Controllers. They often deploy alone, augmenting other Special Forces units such as Green Berets or Navy SEALs. They are also used for domestic tragedies such as natural disasters. Mike Lamonica served 24 years as a Combat Controller, deploying to Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Angola & Bosnia. He was awarded a Bronze Star and had FOUR combat jumps, a record not seen since World War II. Mike West wore the scarlet beret for 30 years and was awarded a Silver Star for his actions during Operation Medusa. Operation Medusa involved 15 running battles between Green Beret's and Taliban forces over several days. Among other things, Mike continuously exposed himself to enemy fire in order to get ordinance on target and guided strafing runs as close as 60 meters to friendly forces. Mike and Mike chose to create the Combat Control Foundation because they were fielding phone calls every week from people who needed help and they didn't have the resources. The Foundation provides support for the families of Combat Controllers with a focus in four areas; Resiliency, Health, Education and Heritage. TAKEAWAY: “Steel sharpens steel. You've got ONE person who can change the entire battlefield. One combat controller with 15 Special Forces can literally take on hundreds or thousands of the enemy.”

In today's episode I have a yarn and share stories with weapon, Troy Knight. Troy is a former Combat Controller of the Royal Australian Air Force (those guys are known as the Special Forces unit of the Air Force). Troy has been deployed alongside members of the Special Operations Task Group in combat in the Middle East multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan. This type of career rarely comes without personal sacrifice and cost. Troy shares some of his experience over the then and now when it comes to combat, relationships, family and mental health... Oh, and the title of the show? Yep, there's plenty of good stuff too. Enjoy! Have you ever been shot at? Have you ever been shot at and witnessed two of your close friends being wounded right next to you, one shot through the neck, the other through the arm. Have you ever been shot at while trying to coordinate a medevac for your two friends that just got shot? Have ever been shot at while coordinating a medevac helo for your friends that were just shot while simultaneously coordinating an air strike on an enemy position only 150 meters away? Yea, I haven't either, but I know a guy who has. That's called Tuesday in the life of an Air Force Combat controller. On today's episode I welcome Ret. MSgt Eric Ballester.
