Grand Traverse Distillery (Traverse City, MI) WF0028 When I started this journey to Michigan, I have to say, I knew very little about the distilling history of my birth state. Come to find out, this modern craft boom might just be the very start of its reputation in the world of fine spirits. And one of the first to fire up a still was Kent Rabish. Inspired by a trip to Oregon and his grandfather's still, hear the story of the early days of Michigan distilling, the thought process that goes into building a distillery, and why Grand Traverse is big in Michigan, but not really too far outside of it. Plus, on The Week In Whiskey Lore, we will look back 150 years to learn how Cincinnati found itself taking the blame for flames in a pair of New Orleans distilleries. And if you're interested in planning a trip to Michigan to visit distilleries and you want to get a wish list together, visit whiskey-lore.com/michigan and sign up for a free account. The Grand Traverse is a ski race like no other: skiers begin at midnight and navigate 40 miles through the dark and they often face blizzards, frostbite, and gear failures. The race follows old postal routes through Colorado's high mountains connecting the iconic ski towns of Crested Butte and Aspen– racers trudge over mountain passes topping out at over 12,000 feet. Needless to say, the event is reserved for hearty and adventurous folks – like Pat O'Neill. Pat is the only person who has participated in the race every year since it began in 1997, and he's come to realize the race is about more than finishing fast— it's about the adventure, his ski partners, and the memories. Episode Intro:Dear listeners of the Female Guides Requested Podcast, happy Wednesday. This is your host Ting Ting and our guest today is Julia Niles. Julia was the first woman to solo the Grand Traverse in a day as well as part of the first all-female ski descent of the Grand Teton. She has guided Denali and Aconcagua, climbed El Cap multiple times, and put up first ascents and descents in the Canadian Rockies, Wyoming, and South Africa.Julia's mountain prowess eventually earned her the title of Certified AMGA/IFMGA guide. She was the 5th American woman to reach this status. Right now Julia lives in Squamish, BC with her two children. She is an athlete for Arcteryx and splits her time between guiding, parenting, and her new counselling business: Mountain Mindset.I had heard impressive stories about Julia, about her gnarly achievements in the mountains and about her toughness, so I was nervous to even contact her for an interview. But I was so glad I did. She was fabulous. During the interview, she offered thoughtful answers, shared relatable life experience. Listening to her calm and soft voice I could sense this inner strength and her love towards mountains and the people she worked with.I loved this interview. We talked about guiding of course, but at the end I realized what we really talked about was life. I don't even know how to summarize it and I think it's totally worth your time to listen to this episode from the very beginning to the end. Trust me on this one and enjoy.Links:Julia's website for her guiding and counselling business: www.mountainmindsetsquamish.comJulia's Arcteryx's athlete page: https://arcteryx.com/ca/en/athletes /julia-niles

Here's the 45th installment of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! Democratic State Rep. Betsy Coffia from the 103rd District joins me this week. Rep. Coffia's district contains Leelanau, Grand Traverse, and Benzie Counties. She's been a journalist, a social worker, and a Grand Traverse County commissioner. And now, she's in Lansing trying to make a difference on a variety of fronts. We discuss the Traverse City hair salon owner who's refusing to serve transgender people, why bigotry is bad for business, the budgets Democrats passed, her work on the school aid budget to help kids and families in northern Michigan, allowing 16-year olds to pre-register to vote, and more. You can follow Rep. Coffia on Twitter. My opening segment concentrates on how the right wing has always used “fear and anger” to get-out its voting base. Nothing has changed in the last 40 years when it comes to the Republican Party's values. Donald Trump wasn't some anomaly. The party was always a Trump party, and he emboldened Republican voters to finally say the quiet things out-loud. Party insiders are trying to silence those voices, but it's too late, now! The “Last Call” continues my opening segment argument that Michigan Republicans stand for nothing, and have zero constructive policy ideas designed to help people. This is part 2 of my interview, Cam Smith (@camfromcb). If you missed his first episode, it's definitely worth checking out, and as a quick refresher, Cam is a world-class ski mountaineer and trail runner. He's the first American man to finish top-10 in a skimo world cup race, with his 3rd place finish in Andorra earlier in 2022. He's won a long list of trail running races as well, and has qualified for the Mountain and Trail Running World Championships in Thailand this year.Today, he talks about the benefits of being a two sport athlete, exploring the dark moments in endurance sport (and how to plan for them), and why blending motivations can make you a better competitor. To round it out, he shares a wicked reflection tool that has helped him squeeze a lot of extra growth out of each race. What really stands out throughout is that Cam is a dual threat and has found a way to be both a (great human being + elite performer).

Last weekend, roughly 200 intrepid skiers lined up at the base of the Mount Crested Butte ski resort, awaiting a midnight race start that would send them 40 miles north through the rugged Elk Mountains to Aspen, Colorado. Among the masses, most of whom were on lightweight ski mountaineering or alpine touring setups, was a pair looking to return the Grand Traverse ski race to its cross country ski roots. The pair was Simi Hamilton and Ben Koons, wearing Fischer skate skis that had seen World Cup air time. For those unfamiliar with the Grand Traverse, it's an iconic backcountry ski race put on by the Crested Butte Nordic Center with deep routes in local cross country ski lore. You'' hear more about the race, its history, and how the night went down during the conversation, but those new to the “backcountry cross country” concept want to check out the show notes on FasterSkier for a closer look at the route and some photos that will inspire you to take up the challenge in future years. Thanks for listening.
