The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the one-hundredth-and-second episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the former Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guests are the command team for 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne). COL Patrick “Pat” Nelson is the Commander of 7th SFG(A). CSM Adam Dunn is the Command Sergeant Major of 7th SFG(A). And CW5 Jose Villarreal is the Command Chief Warrant of 7th SFG(A).   The 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), known by its call-sign “Red Empire” and affectionately referred to as “La Familia,” is one of the most storied units within U.S. Army Special Operations Command. Headquartered at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, 7th SFG(A) has a rich legacy of conducting Unconventional Warfare, Foreign Internal Defense, and Counterinsurgency missions—particularly in Latin America, where it has maintained deep strategic partnerships for decades. The group played a key role in Cold War-era advisory missions, post-9/11 operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and continues to remain at the forefront of global Special Operations Forces (SOF) engagements. Its motto, “Lo Que Sea, Cuando Sea, Donde Sea”—Spanish for “Anything, Anytime, Anywhere”—embodies its agile, mission-first ethos. Today, 7th SFG(A) is leading the way in integrating Special Forces capabilities into Large-Scale Combat Operations, leveraging its regional expertise, cultural fluency, and tactical excellence to shape the battlefield in support of joint force commanders.   This episode explores the evolving role of U.S. Army Special Forces—commonly known as Green Berets—in Large-Scale Combat Operations (LSCO). The conversation emphasizes how Special Forces must adapt from their traditional fast and flexible mindset to operate with greater precision, depth, and coordination within a conventional division fight. The leaders from 7th Special Forces Group discuss lessons learned from their groundbreaking Combat Training Center (CTC) rotation, which required ODAs to integrate with division-level planning and synchronize across time, space, and domains. The challenge of transitioning from unconventional warfare to supporting a Joint Forcible Entry and operating in support of division commanders is central, as Special Forces teams are often forward-deployed and must now shape the battlefield not just tactically, but operationally—anticipating information requirements and transitions before a fight begins.   Additionally, the episode identifies specific points of friction and critical learning moments. These include the challenge of synchronizing SOF timelines with conventional unit operations, the sustainment burdens in contested environments, and the complexity of operating in terrain saturated with sensors, drones, and electronic warfare. Best practices included conducting a full Leader Training Program (LTP) to understand the conventional planning process, refining staff-level battle drills and MDMP execution, and committing to humble, self-aware learning. The leaders also stress the importance of strategic relationships—both with conventional forces and international partners—as a long-term enabler of influence and access. In LSCO, they note, tactical decisions can have strategic consequences, and the margins for error are razor-thin. Success for Green Berets in future conflict will depend on their ability to master the basics, think in depth, and execute with discipline and precision, in lockstep with the broader joint force.   Part of S12 “The JIIMs of JRTC: Working with Our Unified Action Partners” series.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please check-out our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast.   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.   Again, we'd like to thank our guests for participating. Selected for SEAL training alongside a small group of peers, J.D. would go on to serve in multiple SEAL Teams across global deployments, holding command positions at SEAL Team Eight and SEAL Team Four, and leading strategic operations in Africa with Special Operations Command. The only attribute he could find consistent with 100% of us the sense of levity – humor. (32:12) • In the darkest moments of our careers, you'll find the funniest things (33:20) • There's this one young officer standing there, smiling ear to ear. I said “Yo dude, I just cancelled your Christmas break, they got you wet and sandy. Why are you smiling? [His response was] “This is everything I was waiting for, and everything I hoped it would be.” (35:59) • Press into the suffering. All of a sudden, it's not enjoyable, but it changes your mindset. (36:47) • [Marcus] McGraw had more fractures than he had legs. No quit in this dude. (47:18) • The guy next to me, Greg Klein, a huge Green Beret and Marine Force Recon. The instructor says “Klein, what're you doing here? You're Army Green Beret; you're Marine Force Recon. All of a sudden, I'm like “Hey! Danny!  We're like 90 degrees off course. What are you doing? Next thing I know, we bounce off the bottom. He had fallen asleep driving the STD. We had been out there so long that night. (68:52) • It comes back to Who's under the boat? Who's carrying their weight? Who's sacrificing for their teammates? And Danny [Dietz] was always that guy. (79:32) • [Danny Dietz is the] most selfless dude I've ever met. (79:58) • Whatever he [Danny Dietz] did, he did with excellence. He just owned it. (80:25) • It was the first time that I'd lost anybody close, and I walked out to the gravel, looked up to the heavens and I got to thinking. He was probably one of the key elements of my success in my entire career. I looked up to the stars and thought: “Alright Lord, If I was up there and Mike was down here, what would I say to him?” I'd say: “Think well of me and get back to work.” 120:54) • I hadn't brushed my teeth in like 84 hours. (121:53) • Leonidus didn't choose the 300 [Spartans] because they were the best warriors. He chose them because they had the best women. Talk Back to MeBoth Rangers and Green Berets point to Robert Rogers as a figurehead of their history. But in today's conflicts, they perform considerably different roles. Where the current Ranger Battalion focuses on direct action, Green Berets point to Unconventional Warfare as their primary task. Zach Masek of the Dead Warrior Society, a Green Beret Veteran and Columbia graduate draws out misconceptions that prevail to this day about the history of special operations, Robert Rogers himself, and the Spartans. This sets the stage for his critique of the Green Beret mission, and how it claims a history of Unconventional Warfare, even when they rarely, if ever, participate in it. Use Code 2025deaddrop10 for 10% off your order at obsidianarms.comThis episode has been sponsored by Obsidian Arms, a manufacturer of tools, parts and firearms, as well as operating as an OEM shop for those looking to bring excellence to the market. The directive given to our Green Berets is to win by All Means Available. To do so, requires a combination of ingenuity, understanding the environment, a clear plan and precision execution. Mike Vickers built a career on winning America's shadow wars by All Means Available. Mike started his career as both a non-commissioned and commissioned officer Green Beret before becoming a Paramilitary Operations Officer at the Central Intelligence Agency. Mike later served as the Undersecretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict, as well as the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence, where he served as the lead Intelligence official at the Pentagon. Secretary Vickers joined Fran Racioppi to chronicle his new book By All Means Available, Memoirs Of A Life in Intelligence, Special Operations and Strategy. He has been a part of almost every American known and unknown conflict for the past 50 years; including leading the defeat of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. We defined how America collects and uses intelligence in both national security and diplomacy. We discussed America's will to win large conflicts, when we've gotten it right and why we get it wrong. And we went deep on the real enemy facing America today.Mike sees the United States in a New Cold War that will challenge the nation like never before. He shares the reasons why America got here, and most importantly his Grand Strategy to rebuild a culture of winning global conflict to solidify America's position as the dominant world power for decades to come. On this episode of The Daily Herold, Jon Herold is joined by Congressman Pat Harrigan for a candid and surprisingly in-depth discussion about the inner workings of Congress, legislative dysfunction, and what it's really going to take to push President Trump's “one big beautiful bill” through both chambers. Harrigan, a former Green Beret and first-time Congressman, doesn't hold back, describing the pace of government as “galactic to glacial,” while explaining the delicate balancing act behind building consensus, curbing spending, and codifying Trump's agenda before time runs out. Jon presses hard on topics like election integrity, foreign lobbying, dual citizenship in Congress, and whether campaign funding influences loyalty. Harrigan holds his own, discussing term limits, national security threats from China, and a pending bill based on Trump's reciprocity doctrine, prohibiting foreign land ownership in the U.S. unless Americans can buy land in those countries. After the interview, Jon pivots to news highlights, including Trump's new reciprocal trade agreement with the UK, speculation around his upcoming “big announcement,” a potential Medicare drug price reform plan, and the DOJ's invocation of state secrets in the controversial El Salvador deportation case. He also covers FBI Director Kash Patel's recent child trafficking crackdown, ongoing Epstein document delays, and the historic selection of Cardinal Robert Prevost as the first American pope. Packed with straight talk, political insight, and sharp analysis, this episode pulls back the curtain on what's moving in D.C.—and what's not.

Beyond the Green Beret — Healing, Creativity, and Advocacy In this week's powerful episode, Marcus and Melanie sit down with Beau Dooley, a former Green Beret whose journey has taken him from the frontlines of war to the frontlines of mental health advocacy. Clint reflects on his years cycling between combat zones and home life—navigating the difficult shift between being a soldier and a loving husband. Though proud of his military service, Clint shares why he no longer lets the title of Green Beret define him. Instead, he has embraced writing and public speaking to help remove the stigma surrounding mental health treatment for veterans. Clint opens up about the invisible battles many veterans face when trying to reintegrate into society and how creative outlets like poetry have been a source of healing and purpose. His mission: to encourage fellow veterans to find their own voices, their own paths, and a renewed sense of belonging. Beau shares about his life as a Green Beret and the toll of constant transition, the identity struggles veterans face after service, the therapeutic power of creativity and poetry, breaking the stigma around PTSD and mental health treatment, and building a supportive community for veterans In This Episode You Will Hear: • That resentment or that hurt that you didn't deal with is affecting every other relationship in your life. (10:51) • A person that constantly needs to hide behind their successes is not gonna let you in emotionally. (12:06) • It's totally okay to just want to be where you need to be and then realize “Oh, it happened again”. It was knee jerk reaction. I've been doing this since I was younger. I kinda lost my way. I need to check in with myself spiritually. I need to take better care of myself. I need to go say I'm sorry to some people. (12:29) • I was born with an innate wanting to know “What have you been through, and wonder what it's like to be them. (14:30) • You never want to make joining the military an emotional decision. (19:58) • No one else can be you. (25:58) • I don't tell a single war story in the book. It's a collection of poetry and prose, and the narrative about the healing process. I take people into my sickest, darkest spots. (40:01) • You're not you right now. Once they can convince me – I see it in their eyes – my brother – okay, you're good. That was a dangerous spot and you needed for someone to sit on you for 72 hours, and just be there for you. Don't let you keep drinking, take you guns, and make sure you're okay before you give all that stuff back. (44:04) • I realize my wife needed me, but there was no freaking way I was gonna let my team go back to Afghanistan without me. That's when I realized I had 2 masters. (45:52) • When you leave your heart at home and you go to a place like that, it's easy to lose yourself in the violence, because you no longer have your moral compass leading the way. (46:18) • I just reminded myself of all the times I didn't pull the trigger. (47:25) • There's a great divide between “Do I go left, or do I go right?” sometimes, don't go either way. You wait. Waiting is something, because you're allowing the situation to develop. Who knows? There might be a door right there in front of you that you don't see yet. (60:03) • There's a difference between knowing the path, and walking the path. This one did — and it did from the very first moment. In our debut Brand Story with White Knight Labs, we sat down with co-founders John Stigerwalt and Greg Hatcher, and what unfolded was more than a company intro — it was a behind-the-scenes look at what offensive security should be.John's journey is the kind that earns your respect quickly: he started at the help desk and worked his way to CISO, before pivoting into red teaming and co-founding WKL. Greg's path was more unconventional — from orchestral musician to Green Beret to cybersecurity leader. Two very different stories, but a shared philosophy: learn by doing, adapt without a manual, and never take the easy route when something meaningful is on the table. That mindset now defines how White Knight Labs works with clients. They don't sell cookie-cutter pen tests. Instead, they ask the right question up front: How does your business make money? Because if you can answer that, you can identify what a real-world attacker would go after. Then they simulate it — not in theory, but in practice.Their ransomware simulation service is a perfect example. They don't just show up with a scanner. They emulate modern adversaries using Cobalt Strike, bypassing endpoint defenses with in-house payloads, encrypting and exfiltrating data like it's just another Tuesday. Most clients fail the test — not because they're careless, but because most simulations aren't this real. And that's the point.White Knight Labs isn't here to help companies check a box. They're here to expose the gaps and raise the bar — because real threats don't play fair, and security shouldn't pretend they do.What makes them different is what they don't do. They're not an all-in-one shop, and they're proud of that. They won't touch IR for major breaches — they've got partners for that. They only resell hardware and software they've personally vetted. That honesty builds credibility. That kind of focus builds trust.Their training programs are just as intense. Between live DEF CON courses and their online platform, they're giving both new and experienced professionals a chance to train the way they operate: no shortcuts, no watered-down certs, just hard-earned skills that translate into real-world readiness.Pass their ODPC certification, and you'll probably get a call — not because they need to check a hiring box, but because it proves you're serious. And if you can write loaders that bypass real defenses? You're speaking their language. This first conversation with John and Greg reminded us why we started this series in the first place. It's not just about product features or service offerings — it's about people who live and breathe what they do, and who bring that passion into every test, every client call, and every training they offer. We've got more stories with them on the way. But if this first one is any sign of what's to come, we're in for something special.⸻Learn more about White Knight Labs: Guests:John Stigerwalt | Founder at White Knight Labs | Red Team Operations Leader | https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-stigerwalt-90a9b4110/Greg Hatcher | Founder at White Knight Labs | SOF veteran | Red Team | https://www.linkedin.com/in/gregoryhatcher2/White Knight Labs Website | https://itspm.ag/white-knight-labs-vukr______________________Keywords: penetration testing, red team, ransomware simulation, offensive security, EDR bypass, cybersecurity training, White Knight Labs, advanced persistent threat, cybersecurity startup, DEF CON training, security partnerships, cybersecurity services______________________ResourcesVisit the White Knight Labs Website to learn more: https://itspm.ag/white-knight-labs-vukrLearn more and catch more stories from White Knight Labs on ITSPmagazine: https://www.itspmagazine.com/directory/white-knight-labsLearn more about ITSPmagazine Brand Story Podcasts: https://www.itspmagazine.com/purchase-programsNewsletter Archive: https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/tune-into-the-latest-podcasts-7109347022809309184/Business Newsletter Signup: https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-business-updates-sign-upAre you interested in telling your story?https://www.itspmagazine.com/telling-your-story

Congress holds the power of the purse. The United States Government is the largest business in the world, but to conduct business - and national security - Congress has to approve the funds and the money. Representative Jake Ellzey is now a 3-term Congressman representing Texas's 6th District. He's a Naval Academy graduate, a helicopter and fighter pilot, and a member of the House Appropriations Committee, where his decisions determine what the government funds and what it doesn't. He's also the co-chair of the bipartisan military Veterans alliance, the For Country Caucus. With the American government changing at lightning pace, Fran Racioppi asked the Congressman how the Appropriations Committee is prioritizing funding, what that means for national defense, rooting out fraud, waste and abuse; and if there's ever a way for America to balance the budget and stop overspending. Representative Ellzey also shares why we need to clearly define America's next battlefield, funding military readiness and innovation to combat both nation-state adversaries and terror groups, and the critical role he sees our Special Operations Forces playing in the grey war the United States is now in. Plus he shares his leadership lessons from the cockpit and the deck of the USS Ronald Reagan to the halls of Congress.Watch, listen or read our conversation from Congressman Ellzey's office. Don't miss our full coverage from Capitol Hill. Special thanks to For Country Caucus for setting up this series.
