First identified in 1955, the virus has recently shown an increase in reported cases across South America and the Caribbean since December 2023, including areas previously unaffected. The illness commonly mimics dengue fever, with symptoms including high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, pain behind the eyes, rash, nausea, and vomiting. While most individuals recover within 2–7 days, fewer than 5% may experience severe complications, such as brain inflammation or bleeding. Deaths from Oropouche fever remain rare. The Ministry continues to monitor developments and encourages public vigilance against vector-borne diseases.

A Ministry of Health review three years after euthanasia became legal might re-ignite debate. The Ministry is asking people to share their thoughts on the Act. It says 344 people had an assisted death in the year to March 31. General Practice NZ chair, Bryan Betty, says the Act is working as designed. But he says some groups and people still strongly oppose it, despite its rigorous safeguards. "The reason for doing a review like that is to uncover those types of issues and to see how this has been operating - and if there are any things there that we should be thinking about going forward." The Ministry of Health is expected to release an evidence brief on the use of puberty blockers in treating gender dysphoria.  The UK has banned the prescription of the hormone medication, which delays the onset of puberty, to children.   Weak evidence has yet been found for their use, with uncertainty about the potential psychological effects.   UOA Professor Dr Paul Hofman told Mike Hosking that the blockers reduce self-harm and suicidal ideation in some patients.   But he says there's hasn't been any strong follow up studies looking at quality of life and the impacts, nor any issues around safety.   LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wellington Water has again failed to meet fluoridation targets. The water provider says there's been a drop in fluoride levels across the region over the past four months, so it has been unable to meet targets 95 percent of the time. It's blaming equipment issues, treatment plant outages and workplace health and safety improvements. Chief Executive Tonia Haskell says there's been maintenance issues at a couple of plants. "We put the new kit in Gear Island treatment plant- it was over Covid and it wasn't up to the level that we wanted, but we needed something in there in a hurry. We're now going to have to go back and buy something good, that's coming from Germany." LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
