The circumstances of his death were so troubling, they landed on the front of The New York Times. But is loneliness as distressing as we make it out to be? Olivia Laing is the author of a book that delves into that issue, The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone. She joins us to explain her interest in this subject and share how her thoughts on isolation changed through the course of writing this book.

In this episode, following the filing of an injunction by the Food and Drug Administration, a move to stop New York City from expanding its infamous calorie label law, host Jenna Flanagan speaks to New York City Health Commissioner, Dr. Mary Travis Bassett. First enacted in 2008, as Mayor Bloomberg’s effort to combat obesity, the law requires Food Service Establishments to post calorie information on their menus and menu boards if they offer items that are standardized for preparation, portion size and content. Many other cities followed New York’s lead, which led the restaurant lobby to petition the government for a federal law for all to follow. In 2010, the Affordable Care Act moved to standardize the rules but since specific rules were never outlined, so cities like New York have continued expanding their own labeling initiatives. Now with the injunction, the FDA is asking a Manhattan judge to stop the city from enforcing the expansion of the law. Dr. Bassett, who has dedicated her more than 30 years of experience in public health to health equity, will discuss what New York wants, what the federal government wants and what she believes New Yorkers need.
